Dear Parents and Community Members, ASSEMBLY

What an awesome assembly we had yesterday morning with our talented students from TA 2 hosting. Their theme of the jungle provided a very colourful stage arrangement complimented by the students all being dressed in animal costumes. The class expertly retold the story “The Banana that Spoke” through words and actions, using the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach. The students were all able to remember the story and it certainly provided for a terrific presentation. The class also shared with everyone a multitude of facts about various animals, some of which are critically endangered, before performing the “Jungle Jive”. Congratulations to all students, Ms King and Ms Edwards on a wonderful assembly. During the assembly, being “Volunteers Week”, four of our school community members were recognised for their enormous work and contribution with our school and in particular with our school canteen through the Nan Marlow Award and the School Canteen Association. Barbie Connick presented certificates to Maren Kummerow and Anna Richards who were present with additional certificates to be given to Sue Hogan and Donna Hansen. All of these volunteers have contributed countless hours and thoroughly deserve this recognition. STAFF UPDATE As I am sure many within our school community would be aware, Mrs Phoenix (TA4) is to become a mum in a little while! So it is certainly an exciting time for the Phoenix family and friends as they await the arrival of their baby. As a result, Mrs Phoenix has now taken leave from her teaching role for the remainder of this year. I am pleased to announce that Ms Kianee Zscherpel has been appointed to this position and has already commenced teaching in TA4. Miss Zscherpel is busily settling in to her new role and is very happy to be a member of the Dalmain staff and school community.

Teddy Bear Picnic in Kindy Last week Kindy Blue and Gold

brought their teddies to school for a

sleep over.

The next morning, we were

shocked to discover the teddies

had been partying hard and left

a terrible mess in the classroom!

On Friday, Kindy Gold invited their Kindy

friends from Meerilinga to join in the picnic fun.

Both groups of Kindy also participated in a ‘Teddy

Bear’s Picnic’ with lots of fun including painting,

drawing, an obstacle course just for the teddies

and parachute play.

We have now finished planting a range of herbs and vegetables in the DUG and outside TA 5, 6, 8 & 9. This year classes were involved in preparing garden bed areas and provided with seedlings to plant, care for and monitor growth. This whole school approach provides across curriculum learning opportunities, and requires classes to take on board more responsibility, including picking their crops and deciding how to use their produce. PP1 has already picked and enjoyed a delicious morning snack of corn on the cob!

I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Karen Hobden (our gardener) and Cameron Taylor the P&C DUG Coordinator, for their support with this project. The school P&C also generously provided seedlings for planting.

Our school community are encouraged to walk through and view the gardens and the efforts of the students. Volunteers are always welcome to assist with watering or pulling weeds.

Please drop into Kindy or register your interest at the front office.

Mrs Ridley

2021 National Young Leaders Day

Tracy Vo is a journalist and news reporter on Channel 9. She told us about her experiences with racism and about overcoming her stage fright. Tracy told us about when she was a young girl that she was told she had ugly skin. This was very hard for Tracy but she overcame her insecurities and her confidence grew. Did you know that Tracy struggled with stage fright so much she planned to stick to radio her entire life? But she decided to try something new and she found her career in TV.—Sophia.R

Josh Pyke, a Musician and Author, spoke at the National Young Leaders Conference. He talked about not giving up, his first gig and he played his song ‘Make you Happy’. His extreme energy and excitement engaged the audience with intrigue. His book titled ‘The incredible runaway snot’ is a great read for all children.—Mia.M

Trent Cooper is the Fremantle AFLW coach. He is very proud of his team, himself and his life. Trent and his AFLW team worked hard day and night last year and got into the finals! Sadly COVID struck, and the finals got postponed. Trent told us about how they recovered from their disappointment and still worked hard. His team is still holding onto every bit of hope for this season. Trent’s message was NEVER GIVE UP! - Ailin.N

Dance/Games Most student leaders are so busy working that they forget that they’re kids and they’re supposed to have fun. We learnt a new song “Learning is fun”, it has actions and dance moves. This song was all about being yourself and to just be a kid! All the dances we did were amazing, we got to freestyle dance as well. We played awesome games altogether like, paper, scissors, rock. Many of us enjoyed this experience. It took lots of pressure off our shoulders and it was a great way to take a break! - Ailin.N

Paul Steel is the Assistant Commissioner for the WA Police force. Paul was one of the four amazing speakers at the Leadership Conference. Paul has been a Police Officer for 26 years and he specialises in helping rehabilitate people struggling with drug use. Paul was originally a teacher, then he stopped, finding something that he loves doing, helping people. Paul told us a touching story about a young boy who often broke the law and was part of a big graffiti rampage. Paul would often pick this young boy up and take him back to the station for a chat. The young boy disappeared and Paul didn’t hear from him again until 12 years later. Paul was on a bus sitting next to a very tall man with lots of tattoo’s . The man said, “You’re Paul Steel aren't’ you?” Paul looked at the man confused. “It’s Ben,” said the man. Paul asked him why he was talking to him and he said it was because he was always nice to him, that he would give him milo and talk nicely to him. Paul Steel taught me a lot, mainly that any sort of contact can leave a lasting impression on someone. Even a smile can make someone's day.—Wren.F
