SAKG NEWS

The 21st of June marks the Winter Solstice, the shortest day (and longest night) of the year. We can see the sun’s lowest arc and the garden is on long shadows. I’m asking the students to observe the length of the days in the coming weeks, to see how quickly the days begin to noticeably stretch out again. With growth at its slowest, we take time to clean, tidy, prune and weed. Thanks to our Chicken Monitors and some extra helpers, for thoroughly cleaning inside Cluckingham Palace. Washed and scrubbed, it was a lovely fresh start for our lovely hens. I hope everyone enjoys their holidays. I look forward to seeing everyone in the garden next term. Jane Humphrys

BREAKFAST CLUB Breakfast Club is on in the staffroom every morning before school. Students from all year levels love to attend and have some toast and a milo before they go to class. With the increasing number of students attending we are in need of some more supplies. Bread and margarine donations are always more than appreciated! We are happy to accept any bread, Woolworths and Coles brand sandwich/toast bread is perfect. The children also love their milo and strawberry jam or vegemite. If you would like to make a donation please hand it in to the office. We are so appreciative of your support as it allows us to continue this before-school club. If you would like to volunteer a morning every now and then helping out with breakfast club please let the office know. We are always in need of more helpers!

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT WITH DAVE My Catch Phrase When my three teenagers were children, it was so easy to spend most of my time telling them what they were doing wrong. Having three kids within three years meant they were always up to something. Because I didn’t want to focus on the negatives, I came up a phrase to help me look for positives – because that’s who I want them to become. "Catch them doing something right and tell on them!" We all want to be noticed. We repeat actions that get us attention. That’s human nature. We become the ‘me’ that gets noticed. Catching (and praising) your kids for doing the right thing is very powerful. It can change an attitude for life! You could catch them smiling, sharing, playing, creating, listening, sleeping, eating, or any positive action you want to see more of in your child. Let them know you saw what they did and that they are awesome! Once you’ve caught them doing something right, make it a priority to ‘tell on them’. This takes careful consistent effort as a parent. When kids do something wrong, it usually makes a good story. So we tell it – to family, friends, teachers, even strangers! It lets others share the parenting journey with us. Hearing a story about yourself forms identity as much as what actually happens to you. A story about you is attention given to you. So every story reinforces the behaviour in the story. Each time you hear a story about yourself, it becomes more and more ‘who you are.’ Choose carefully the stories you tell about your kids – especially in front of them. Ask, “Is this story about who I want them to become?” We become the stories we hear and tell about ourselves. Choose the positive stories and tell them often. Then watch your children shine!

plain drawing paper the LRC would really appreciate any donations! Thank you!

PRODUCTION NEWS Our production is progressing nicely but now it’s time to ask our wonderful Dorset community for assistance. I am looking for people who can sew. Please don’t groan; there are not very many costumes at all but I do need assistance; even if you are crafty not necessarily a person who can sew. If you could drop me a note saying your availability, child’s name and grade, I would be very grateful. Just hand the note to your child’s classroom teacher and they will get it to me. REMEMBER there are not that many costumes, but I do need some help. Thank you for your help and support. Sue Page, Performing Arts Co-ordinator.

ART NEWS Wow... what a busy term the junior grades are having in art! Grade one and two students have been working on this term’s unit, The Visual Fairy-tale. Classes have really been enjoying observing and discussing fairy-tale artwork. Our first art piece this term was to create individual versions of princesses and princes. Students considered different ways of thinking about what is beautiful and then made their own individual painted designs. Then we set off to find the big bad wolf as he had blown down the pigs’ houses and locked up granny. We made wanted posters and put them up in the school, but we still haven’t seen him yet! Now we are working on our Alice in Wonderland unusual pouring cups and learning all about 3-dimensional design, patterns and colour. The foundation students have been working on this term’s unit, Artwork and its Artist. Classes have busy exploring various artists and learning about their different styles of artwork, as well as learning about their lives. The students have explored Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘The Sunflower man’, Henri Matisse and his love for colours and Pablo Picasso and his blue period of painting. Students had the opportunity to put on the hats of these artists and produce wonderful artwork including: Picasso blue period coloured guitars, Matisse collages and Van Gogh sunflower paintings. Across the term the classes have explored many art materials and learnt a variety of artistic techniques. Students especially enjoyed getting their hands dirty by making pinch pots, which they later painted in wonderful designs using complementary colours. Look out for these as they are coming home this week! Not long now until the junior grades

become big science kids. I sure will

miss them. Mel Rowe.

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION Dear parents, Remember to get your Australian Mathematics Competition notes back in as soon as possible. It will be held early next term on Thursday the 27th of July. If you have any questions, please see Mr. Sullivan. Thanks, Daniel.

CROSS COUNTRY Last week Dorset had two runners competing in The Regional Cross Country Finals. Remy Maclean and Heilyn Allsop had qualified to compete in this competition by performing well in the district competition where Remy came 4th and Heilyn came 5th. Making it into this competition was a great achievement. In the final Remy came 25th and Heilyn came 33rd in a field of about 80 runners in each race.
