The Unicorn Unicorn FEBRUARY 2016 AROUND the CLUB Recently, Mr. Pat Gross, Director of the Western Green Section of the USGA, made a visit to the Club and toured the golf course. Following the tour he made a presentation to the greens committee and shared his observations. Some of the highlights of his findings are: e presence of three distinct soil layers in the green profile, rather a single sand-based layer, causes three serious problems: 1. It restricts uniform water movement causing water to accumulate near the surface, 2. It prevents roots from growing deeply and 3. It allows salts to accumulate at the surface which is very detrimental to turf growth. In addition, during heavy rains or when greens are leached to flush the salts out, rather than the salts being pushed down below the subsurface, the salt laden water pools in the low areas of the greens or immediately in front of the greens. It is this condition that has caused ongoing problems with areas of the greens and green approaches. Even though smile drains have recently been installed in front of several of the most problemat- ic greens, Mr. Gross strongly recommends that, at minimum, drainage be added to the greens through the installation of a Sand Channel Drainage system or AGD Drainage system. Although either of these would be helpful, Mr. Gross adamantly believes the long term solution is to rebuild the greens to USGA specifications. Mr. Gross also recommends that green speeds be slowed to spread the foot traffic around rather than concentrate the traffic in the same spots over and over. Additional recommendations from Mr. Gross include rebuilding three to five tee boxes per year, continuing with the existing fairway sand top dressing program and continuing to remove trees that are producing too much shade for kikuyugrass to grow. Mr. Gross also recommends rebuilding the course bunkers adding liners and drains to keep the bunker sand clean and dry, something we currently struggle with. Overall, Mr. Gross commended the current agronomic practices of Superintendent Wolpoff. To read the entire report, go to Course Conditions under the Golf Tab of the FHCC member website or pick up a copy of the report from Evelyn at the front desk. e course is coming around on a daily basis and shortly will return to the wonderful condition we are all so proud to play. FROM THE TENNIS PRO

1: Initiate The Poach: Work in the poach strategy into your game plan. By essentially calling plays centered around your doubles partner at net, you will (a) make the net man feel needed and that he is playing an important role in the match, which will cause him to be more confident and a heck of a lot more active… (b) keep your opponents honest and on their toes, because they won’t know if their cross court return will be cut off and shoved back down their throat or not. IMPORTANT: Now, if you ask how many times is enough to initiate this… Do this at least once a game (…especially towards the beginning of the match). The sooner and the more often you get your partner going, the better.

2: Give Your Opponent A Body Shot: Serving closer to the middle of the service box will make it much more difficult for the returner to get space and create solid angles. More times than not, the ball will come back to you in the middle of the court, the spot where your partner can easily finish them off. It will also help keep your partner in rhythm.

3. Talk To Each Other: A great way to keep both doubles players involved is by keeping each other informed. After each point, don’t wing it. Create dialogue. Okay, this isn’t church where you’ll be “Shhushed.” Huddle up and discuss things like the next play or plan of attack with each other. Let each other in on things you may notice the other team doing well or even struggling with.

MEMBERTESTIMONIAL

Thank you to members FHCC Members Eric and Julie Merrell for your encouraging words in regards to your experience in Upper Dining this past month.

Dave,

I wanted to tell you Julie and I dined Friday for the first time since Chef Peter started, and I have to tell you we were blown away with the new menu. Katelyn and Joseph joined us for a nice family dinner and the quality of food was very close to what we receive when we go to dine in downtown LA. We all shared the Wontons and loved them! We also were afforded the opportunity to meet Chef Peter on one of his dining room visits and he has such a passion and energy for what he does, it was refreshing.

On another note , we were also serviced by Andrew in a support capacity last night and he was FANTASTIC! He is attentive and really takes the time to be at your service, not rushing off to the next table. Please pass along my compliments for an outstanding experience and care for the job he does.

OF COURSEHello and Welcome to 2016 from the Golf Course Maintenance Team!

We have been awaiting the El Nino effect but to this point, it has been nearly non-existent. The ocean temperatures are still warmer than past El Nino’s

but high pressure systems have been keeping the moisture off Southern California. We do still expect significant precipitation in February and March.

While the rains have been minimal, we have been continuing to work to improve several green surround areas by harvesting sod from adjacent fairways. This project has been quite successful and will continue through the spring.

Our first greens aerification is just around the corner at the end of Feb-ruary. We will be utilizing both hollow tines and the Dryject technology to continue the augmentation of the upper 4” of the soil profile. We will also conduct a full greens deep tine venting just prior to the aerification process. We have been on a steady program of venting and topdressing which is resulting in positive results including increased root mass.

The Golf Industry Show (GIS) is being held in San Diego this year and both I and my Assistant Superintendent Cristobal will be attending to take several classes as well as to attend the trade show. I will be sending out several Tweets regarding new equipment trends and ideas that I come across at GIS. We are investigating the best implement to fracture the heavy clay soils beneath our fairways and look to begin utilizing a new unit later this spring.

There is a new Bunker Rake Placement in effect. Bunker rakes are now to be left outside of the bunkers. We have marked small red T’s in the loca-tions the rakes should be placed when you are finished raking with them. These locations and orientations were chosen to minimize the impact the rakes may have with your game. Leaving the rakes wherever you may exit the bunker may result in an unfair situation for a group that follows you. Please replace the rakes on the red T’s.

Thank you for your support!

Michael Wolpoff, Golf Course Superintendent
