Message from the President

Jeff Cristee Club President

As I have stated many times, I believe Meridian Hills is the preeminent club in Indianapolis. There are many reasons for this, of course, including our membership, great facilities and wonderful staff. But more importantly, Meridian Hills and our membership is an integral part of the local community.

For example, this year’s Holliday Park Trail Run was held on Saturday, March 23rd. Meridian Hills member, Lisa Hurst, is the longtime organizer and chair of the run with all proceeds benefitting the Friends of Holliday Park. As always, this year’s run was supported by many Meridian Hills runners and volunteers and was a huge success for the park. These funds are used to keep the facilities in top condition and to provide many programs in the nature center. Congratulations to Lisa and to all who supported this event.

Secondly, Holliday Park will also host Orchard in Bloom again this year from May 3rd through the 5th. Orchard in Bloom is the main fundraiser for the Orchard School and many Meridian Hills members have served as general or committee chairs for this event over the years including my wife, Dana. I am sure this year is no exception and the efforts of Meridian Hills members will be key to the fund raising success for the school and the park.

We are also working to forge an even stronger relationship with Beth-El Zedeck. This month, Steve Roper met with their leadership team to discuss safety and security among other topics. Beth-El Zedeck has asked Meridian Hills to serve as a shelter for their students in the event of an emergency at their school. We, of course, have agreed and are pleased to support them in any way we can.

I am proud of Meridian Hills in many ways, but especially proud of what our members mean to the surrounding neighborhood. Clearly, our club is even stronger when we are part of a vibrant community. Thanks to all for your efforts and I look forward to seeing you at the club.

IN MEMORIAM:

Steve Roper, CCM, CCE General Manager

Like most of you, I am tired of winter, (especially the snow,) and ready for warm weather, a round of golf and dinner on the patio.

We are having great success with the Refundable Certificate program. As of today we have had 29 certificates that have been used towards nine new memberships and seven existing members have upgraded their memberships. If you have any questions on the program, please contact Jessica Bex at 317.860.1556 or [email protected].

Don’t forget about our Clubs within the club. Today we have active Book Club, Bridge Lessons, Knitting Club and Girls Night Out. Mark your calendar for May 4th for the “Spring Fling” Kentucky Derby Style. This is open to all club members and invited guests. Additional information forth coming. As always if you have any questions on membership please contact myself or Jessica.

Mike Semler Membership

Committee Chairman

Sincerely,

Michael R. Semler, SIOR

This month is absolutely one of the best months of the year at Meridian Hills! The golf course opens; tennis courts are being prepared for the season; the outdoor furniture is being brought out and placed for dining; food service hours are expanding; and families are using their club.

Our security surveillance system and on-site patrol presence has made a notable difference. Please remember to not leave valuables such as purses, laptops or other electronic devices in your vehicle while at the club. Turn them off and either put them in your trunk, lock them in a compartment, or bring them in the clubhouse with you. This summer at the pool will bring cookouts, poolside cocktails, fun for the kids, ping pong, easy listening music for the adults and a friendly accommodating staff. Small pool parties are allowed of 30 or so kids, during normal pool operating hours, but the pool will remain open to the membership. Night fall parties cannot be allowed due to lighting and safety reasons. We do plan on keeping the pool open after Labor Day this season as well! In March you should have received your 2013 Roster Book in our new format. Please take some time to review our new rules & policies. There have been several changes that will be enforced this season. Have questions, comments or need service? Reach us on the club app. Stay up to date with all the latest club events, menus, and even watch videos from our golf & tennis professionals. In addition, each week our Executive Chef, Joe Miller, presents our weekly dinner special & wine pairing via video. There is this and so much more, all on our very own Meridian Hills app. Search MHCC in the App Store. The cost is $1.

Golf NewsGolf Course Dress Code ReminderProper attire must be worn at all times by members and their guests on the: -Golf Course -Practice Tee -Putting and Chipping GreensProper attire consists of: -Slacks, tailored shorts, or skirts and skorts for ladies -Sport shirts with collar, mock turtlenecks, or blouses for ladies -Golf shoes with soft spikes or tennis shoesInappropriate attire would be: -Sandals of any type, swimming suits, swimming trunks, jogging shorts, coaches shorts, tennis attire, tank tops, or tee shirts without collarsOther dress code issues we ask to be followed: -Shirts be tucked into your shorts or slacks -Hats must be worn facing forward at all times and should be taken off when in the Clubhouse. -Remember, blue jeans are not allowed on any part of the golf course or practice area at any time.

The Short Course at Meridian Hills:To engage a large portion of our golfing membership that doesn’t play golf on a regular basis or maybe spouses of golfing members that don’t or haven’t played at MHCC, the golf shop is going to put in one set of short tees on all 18 holes. These sets will range from 30 yards to 170 yards. These shorter distances will hopefully promote some of our non-golfing husbands or wives, and help promote our already healthy junior program. We have to come up with new and exciting ways to get more people playing golf and this is one way where we can (hopefully) get some new golfers addicted to the game.We know that time restrains are becoming a major factor for our younger membership, so a short course may allow couples and/or families with non regular golfing members to enjoy our wonderful golf course.*Scorecards will be available in the golf shop.*Tee Markers will be in each fairway.*Only available for our golfing membership

Back Nine Bonus GolfBack Nine Bonus Golf begins Saturday, May 4th.As our membership grows we want to give our members more opportunities to enjoy our wonderful golf course. We hope this new and innovative idea will allow some people to play a quick 9 holes of golf. We want to thank Jim Hess and his staff for making the necessary accommodations for allowing us to make this possible.

Where: Back Nine When: Golfers must tee off between 7:00am – 8:30am on Saturday and Sunday mornings during the golf season.*Members cannot tee off after 8:30am on the back nine due to our members playing the front nine to make the turn. Why: To allow a single or two-some to play a quick nine holes of golf before other weekend commitmentsWho: Golfing members who want to play a quick nine holes of golf*men only on Saturday & anyone on Sunday

All New Junior Golf ProgramThe Junior Golf Program has been completely re-developed and includes a Junior Golf League for ages 7-14 and will be limited to the first 48 juniors that sign up. A “PeeWee Camp” has been established for juniors ages six and under and will be limited to the first 28 that sign up.We have had several parents ask if their seven year old can still play in the PeeWees if they are not ready for the junior golf league, and this is perfectly fine.

The Junior Golf League… What to Expect Each of the four league teams will have:• 12 junior players, 1 PGA Professional Coach, and 1-2 Asst. Coaches. • (Five) 90 minute team practices consisting of detailed instruction in a clinic setting• (Four) League Matches, including a Season Ending Championship• (Two) Open play dates (still from 8am-10:15am)

Each junior golfer receives:•Teamgolfpolowithnumberonback&teamlogo•Teamhat•Teambackpack•Juniorgolffavor(TBD)•Seasonendingawardsbanquet/prizes/trophypresentation

When the league matches take place:• League matches are on Wednesday mornings from 8am - 10:15am. • Each junior is asked to show up by 7:45 am to meet with their team & coach. • In any golf event at any level, it is a requirement that individuals make their tee time. If they don’t, they are

disqualified or don’t get to play. We will not penalize juniors who show up late in this league, however we encourage parents to be timely and bring their children to matches on time. This is the only way our young junior golfers learn the value of time and what a “tee time” is like.

The PeeWee Camp… What to Expect Each PeeWee Camp Session will include:• Maximum of 28 camp members. • (Five) coaches, including lead instructors Heather Warthen & Alex Poley. • The PeeWee Group will be divided into breakout sessions based on age. This will allow us to communicate

with the different ages and abilities properly. • Two of the camp sessions will include Kwik Golf competitions, which is a fun alternative to playing on the

course for younger, inexperienced golfers.

Each PeeWee golfer receives:•(Six)1hourclinics•Teamhat•Juniorgolffavor(TBD)
