Dear Friendly Hills Family,

The Club has gone through some great positive changes in the last 11 months and I believe there will be more to come. It seems like yesterday that I was elected to serve as the Club President by the Board of Directors. It has been an honor to serve and I am proud of the work that the Board has accomplished with the help of the Members and Club Staff. This year marked my 9th and Final year of service as a Director of the Club in the last 12 years. I will serve as Past President for the 2014/2015 Board and

will still be available on a limited basis to Club Committees in the future. I want to express my gratitude to the Board members and Committee members who have generously donated their valuable time to the Club for its continued success.

The last 12 years have been trying times for most private equity clubs, however, Friendly Hills has been successful due to some very strong defenses in our fiscal stewardship. Through this stewardship and discipline, the Club remains the only local private equity Club with a continuous nearly full active membership. There are many clubs within 10 miles of Friendly Hills which have lost 10-30% of their members in the last several years, but Friendly Hills Country Club has consistently maintained 395 - 400 equity members keeping our Club-owned memberships to less than 1.5%. It is important to understand that a full, dues paying membership is essential for the continued improvement and success of any club. In the last 8 years we have had over 225 new members join the Club, and many of the equity members that sold did not leave the Club instead taking advantage of our Senior program. We want to maintain our traditions here at Friendly Hills but we must also be aware of the next generation of new members and their needs. The Club is aggressively pursuing these issues and needs more participation from the newer members’ ideas for success. Finally, our Club is not only successful because we invent new ideas at the Club, but because many ideas come from members traveling or visiting other Clubs around the world and bringing ideas back. Some of these ideas brought in the last 10 years include the gym, the food service downstairs, the summer BBQs, and the expansion of the patio service with entertainment during the summer. We all need to take notes when we see great improvements or services when we travel and think about how to bring those to life at FHCC.

Thank you for all of the support you have given me throughout my tenure, and I wish FHCC many prosperous years to come. See you at the Club, James

RYDER CUP TOURNAMENT BY LENORE GARMANFor one brief shining day, Friendly Hills became Gleneagle, Scotland! This is because the ladies held their Ryder Cup here! Following a delightful breakfast in which the ladies meet their partners and playing opponents, Team USA and Team Europe teed it up. USA, clad in red blouses and led by their heralded Captain, Janet Osborn, were leading by 1 point, until the final foursome arrived in the clubhouse. That foursome of Europe-ans, Gina Malkasian and Karin James, and the American’s, Masako Igushi and Susan Shimizu, delivered the necessary 1 point for the Euro’s for the two teams to tie!!! 4 ½ to 4 ½!! It was the perfect ending to a competitive day! We really appreciate all the cheerful help that Assistant Pro Kris Bernard gave us and also our esteemed Head Pro Jay Prestella. Our amazing luncheon prepared by Chief Joe Flores, featured Yorkshire pudding for the Brits and fried chicken for the Yankee bal-ance. Nancy Bobier did the honors of selecting the menu for the participants. Gala tee prizes wrapped by Sarah Samayoa, Kathy Kow, and Janet Osborn gave the dining room a festive air. European Captain, Lenore Garman, helped pass out the prizes to both teams because we were all winners!!! The format was Match Play- Partners, all Net.

6 OCTOBER 2014

Hello from the Golf Course Maintenance Department!

Fall aerification is just around the corner. Beginning on Monday, October 6th, the greens will be aerified with ½” coring tines to remove organic matter from the greens surface followed by 5/16” deep tine aerification. The deep tines will create channels into the lower level of the green for water to move through as well as break up the compacted layer that has developed at approximately four inches in the greens. These processes will be followed by the application of soil amend-ments and sand topdressing. One week later on October 13th, the greens will undergo a process called DryJect. The DryJect utilizes high pressure water and a venturi suction system to in-ject sand directly into the soil profile. This process will help to dilute the organic matter as well as create additional channels for water to flow through.

The fairway topdressing that took place in August was very successful and we are looking forward to one more topdress-ing application in late October as well. Annually, there will be three topdressing applications the fairways totaling just under ½” of sand each year. This does not seem like a lot but over a short period of time we will see improved drainage and increased surface firmness.

The overseeding procedure for the Club will change this year. It has been decided that we will only overseed the tee tops as well as any areas of the rough that lost significant populations of cool season turf through the summer. This reduction in seed use will provide our warm season turf (predominately Kikuyugrass) the best opportunity to spread into other areas of the course. We have been proactive by utilizing aerification plugs, sod and seed to help increase the kikuyugrass population as well. While this will not be an overnight turnaround, the results can already be seen on holes one, five and nine.

Thank you for your support!

COURTSIDE

It’s good to be back out on the courts competitively after our summer hiatus. We started up on September 10th for our “Back to School” Ladies’ Day hosted by Melissa Lopez. Everyone proudly wore their (kids’) school’s colors, of which most seem to be of the collegiate variety….. are we getting old? Well, if that’s true, you couldn’t tell once we hit the courts and got our game on! We represented UCLA Bruins vs. CU Boulder Buffalos vs. Boston College Eagles vs. Santa Clara Broncos vs. USC Trojans vs. Grinnell Pioneers, to name a few.

Our winners of the day were many… a 4-way-tie: Aracely Gordon, Missy Reyna, Maria Fuhrman and Susan Washle all finished with 10 wins. CON-GRATS LADIES!!

We will be hosting our annual Rally for the Cure Tennis Tournament benefitting Breast Cancer research on October 22nd. Missy Reyna will be hosting this fun tournament and has room for more players (and definitely will have room for any donations!) so please email her at [email protected] for any information about the tournament. The cost is $20 and includes a magazine subscription of your choice, delicious lunch and great raffle prizes following a fun morning of play. Dig out your pinkest shirt and come out to RALLY FOR THE CURE!

If you have been thinking about taking up tennis NOW IS THE TIME! Set aside Tuesday mornings and come out to one of Jorge’s Tennis Clinics. He will have a beginner’s clinic from 9-10:30am and a more intermediate clinic from 10:30-12. If you have never attended any of his clinics, they are always fun and helpful and will definitely help you improve your tennis skills.

Tie-Breaker Scoring Tips• 6-6 in a set results in a ‘7 Point Tiebreak’ game played• 7 points earned combined with a 2 point advantage wins the game• the 1st point is served from the right service court (deuce court)• rotate serves after the 1st point is played• with the exception of the 1st point served, each competitor serves two consecutive points always serving the first point from the left service court (advantage court or ‘ad’ court) then serving the second point from the right service court (deuce court)• every 6 points, the tennis competitors switch ends on the court Tie-Breaker scoring compliments the sport of tennis and is widely embraced by tennis athletes, spectators and network television management.

The next time you are watching a Grand Slam Tennis Tournament and the game score is tied at 6-6 , stay tuned in for an electrifying battle for points in a ‘7 Point Tiebreak’ game to determine the outcome of the final tennis score for that set and possibly the match.
