A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTThis year your Board of Directors has developed a framework that will help focus its direction over the coming year. The Board adopted a mission statement and has established specific goals to help guide the club’s operation and set priorities. Standing committees will be encouraged to assist the board by developing specific and measurable targets in support of these broader goals. Later this year we will be asking our entire membership for their input on the club’s op-erations and priorities when we conduct member focus groups and a member survey. The results of the focus groups and survey will help determine priorities and direction of the club in the coming years.

Set forth below is the mission statement and goals. Let’s all work together to help make FHCC a superb club.

ArOUND the CLUBLet it rain, let it rain, let it rain. As we move into January, the highly anticipated rains from El Nino have not yet materialized. However, they most certainly will come and when they do, really good things are going to happen. The most important benefit the rains will bring is a complete flushing of salts from the grass on the golf course, especially the fairways. Salt is the great growth inhibitor for turf and in our case, high salt levels are one of the biggest reasons

our fairways are in the condition they are. With a few good flushings and the warmer weather that typically comes In February and March, the fairway turf will once again begin rapid growth and become lush and full.

Chef Peter and Sous Chef Laura have now been on board for over a month and have assembled a terrific team and exciting menus to satisfy the membership’s dining preferences. Our service staff under the guidance of Food and Beverage Director Christine Bobadilla is primed and ready to make your every dining experience a memorable one. Please take a minute to fill out the dining satisfaction survey each time you dine at the Club so we can hopefully recognize our staff members for doing a good job.

As noted in President Ford’s Unicorn article in this newsletter, one of the goals of this year’s Board of Directors is to improve communications to and from the mem-bership. One of the best ways to keep informed of what is happening around the Club is to make a regular practice of going onto the Club’s new website. A short tutorial is shown here below. I am reaching out to all of you to follow the tutorial and begin using your smart phone to get onto the website to make tee times and keep abreast of all the happenings around the Club.

On December 14th we held our annual Employee Holiday Dinner Party hosting nearly 200 staff and family. The evening included a nice picture slide show of all employees, a fabulous dinner prepared by outside cooks and servers, a nice gift for all attendees and most importantly, the handing out of the bonuses collected from the mem-bership. I would like to thank the entire membership, especially those of you who contributed more than the $100 recommended amount, for truly making your staff ’s Christmas special.

See you around!

Dave

HOLIDAY HACKERSThe highlight of December is our annual Holiday Hackers tour-nament. This year, Barbara Carty, Linda Milano and Marilyn Ampudia chaired the event with the theme “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Eighty members and guests, decked out in holiday attire

came out to play on a chilly December morning. Raj-a-Claus, aka Assistant Pro Raj Samra, was jolly on the course for photos with the ladies. Mrs. Claus, aka Nancy Bobier, navigated the course with a sleigh full of “Jingle Jello.” Festive decorations were beautifully arranged in the ladies locker room and the dining room. Santa theme ball mark-ers were the tee prizes wrapped in a handmade holiday decoration. Closest to the pin winners were lucky enough to take home one of the elaborate Santa centerpieces. Head Pro Jay Prestella and Assistant Pro Kris Bernard were on hand to sing some fun golf lyrics Christmas songs and pass out the gift card prizes to the field.

FROM THE TENNIS PROWe always hear about the importance of footwork in tennis, but why is it so important?

Consider the following:1. The proper footwork takes you “there” to hit the ball properly.2. Without good footwork you’ll hit the ball either too late or too early.3. Footwork is essential to balance, balance is essential to striking the ball properly and striking the ball properly is essential to wining points.4. A smooth footwork will save you energy that can be best used striking the ball.5. Good footwork reduces the risk of injuries.6. The proper footwork will extend your aerobic capacity and mental lucidity throughout the match even as you begin to get a bit tired.7. Good footwork improves your transition from defense to offense and vice versa.

I hope all these considerations push you a bit to work on your footwork and improve it!

See you on the courts!

OF COURSEHappy Holidays from the Golf Course Maintenance Department!

As we creep into winter with cooler days and nights, we are starting to see a steady pattern of rain events. While these first few events have not been large, they have been consistent and moisture has been in the forecast most

days. If you are thinking “where is this El Nino?” You are not alone! The current models show the event beginning to pick up steam in January and peaking in February and March.

We have been using this time without significant rainfall to get a few late season projects completed. Drainage is being installed along the front edges of several greens to help the greens drain more effectively and reduce the buildup of salts in the soil. Concurrently with this project we are also addressing several weak approach areas through the use of sod that has been harvested from the begin-nings of fairways. This practice is being utilized to allow the turf to be at the same mowing height as the surrounding area, eliminating the need to slowly reduce the height of cut to match. Because this work is being done in the winter, it will take longer for the areas to knit together, however, the results in the Spring will be far superior to the results should we have waited to make the improve-ments. The areas will be painted as Ground Under Repair as well as roped off to reduce/eliminate traffic. Please take a drop from these areas should your ball come to rest within them.

The Landscape Enhancement Project has come to a close! We will be monitoring the plant material through the winter and submit a list of plants that will need to be replaced in the Spring to American Landscape who are more than willing to come back to replace the material that needs to be. The final step in the process with the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) involves submitting documents to them, having a site visit to verify the work was completed and a waiting period to receive the approved rebate. We have submitted the required information the MWD and are working to schedule our site visit.

Thank you all for your patience and cooperation as the Landscape Enhancement Project was taking place this year. From June through November there was abundant work being done to your golf course and I feel that our Membership handled the inconveniences and frustrations of the project incredibly well! Thank you all!

Our staff would also like to thank all of you for your generous contributions to the Employee Holiday Bonus Fund! These contributions are very much appreci-ated by myself and all of my staff!

Happy Holidays,

Michael Wolpoff, Golf Course Superintendent
