Friendly Hills has a strong and active Golf Shop/Tournament committee that meets monthly to ensure that golf remains our number one priority, beginning with our Junior program through our men’s and ladies’ golf competition. own game. Hopefully each member will find a tournament at Friendly Hills that tests and satisfies the desire to be a competitive golfer.

Respect of the Game:The ultimate indicator of the value of our golf program must be the level of civility displayed by those who participate. Hence, exhibiting good sportsmanship should be our fundamental objective. If we will all make every effort to “Respect the Game,” we will all enjoy a sense of pride, wellbeing and accomplishment in all of our social and competitive events. Our message from the Golf Shop/Tournament committee is simple and direct: Let’s lead the way, ‘Respect the Game’.

In December’s Unicorn I shared with the member-ship our hope to receive a rebate from the Metropol-itan Water District for the removal of a considerable amount of turf on the golf course. Well, the MWD has approved FHCC for a rebate up to $1,681,000 and we are now ready for the next step which is to present the plan to the membership for approval. Look for an invite soon to attend a Town Hall meeting at which Mr. Casey O’Callaghan, our longtime course

architect, will share with the membership renderings of what the course will look like after 19 acres of turf is removed. Let me say up front that the turf proposed to be removed is for the most part turf that rarely, if ever, comes into play and there will be no “forced carries” off any tee or anywhere else on the course. All expectations are that this landscape enhancement project will truly give the course a fresh new look that will enhance the playing experi-ence even more.

The two recent By-Law initiatives, one that changes the qualifications to become a Senior and the other that allows the Board to set the date for the first Board meeting of the year, were both overwhelmingly approved. This means that any Regular member who has been a member at least 10 years and whose combined age and length of time as a Regular member add up to 75 or more is now eligible to become a Senior member. Should you have any questions regarding this new policy, please contact our Membership Direc-tor, Jessica Magdosku. The wine storage locker project is fully underway and is expected to be completed by mid-April. This is an exciting addition to the Club that is part of an overall enhancement to the Upper Dining Room. So far 40 members have signed up for storage privileges leaving approximately 20 lockers available. Should you be interested in securing a storage locker, contact Jessica Magdosku.

The golf course is in magnificent conditions thanks to the agronomic practices implemented this past summer coupled with several favorable rain soakings. We all know that the winter weather here in Southern California is usually perfect for playing golf so I encourage all members to make a new years’ resolution to play more golf and bring out more guests.

See you around,

Dave Goodrich, General Manager/COO

HOLIDAY BOUTIQUEThe FHWGA annual Holiday Boutique was held on December 16th organized by Karin James. Golf was called due to weather, but a little rain did not interrupt the holiday spirit and celebration. Members dressed in holiday attire, silly hats, and festive/creative sweaters. Alice Chen made her way around the room gathering friends to try out her new “selfie” phone gadget. The always charming and talented Head Pro Jay Prestella sang several favorite Christmas songs and raffled off the gifts. Honored guests Rosemarie Colome, Lillian Mott and Brock Bowmen braved the wet weather to join in the festivities. Chef Joe prepared a delicious lunch followed by a warm from the oven Pizookie dessert, a perfect finish to a wonderful holiday gathering.

INSTALLATIONInstallation Day was held on January 6th in honor of the incom-ing 2015 Chairman, Ching Chen and the new Board. Karin James organized the day starting with a delicious breakfast complete with mimosas, followed by a “Step Aside Scramble” golf tournament. With the theme of “Good Fortune in the New Year,” the tables were deco-rated in bright red and gold. Karin James started by recognizing each of the new Board members and presented them with a Unicorn logo ball marker and pink rose. Ching Chen received a dozen yellow roses in appreciation for taking on the position of Chairman.

As a special acknowledgement for her hard work as Chairman in 2014, Barbara Carty was presented with a dozen red roses and a gold medallion necklace. Following the announcement of the new board, Assistant Pros, Brian Ricketts and Kris Bernard provided the entertainment with a silly skit of “Kristian the Magnificent.” Kris amazed the group with his psychic ability to reveal unknown answers to unknown questions. A special thank you to the talented Fran Brandt for providing the elaborate costume. Brian wrapped up the event by announcing the winners of the scramble tournament and everyone went home a winner with a gift card. A fun day and a great way to start the New Year!

6 FEBRUARY 2015

A lot can change in a month… Last month I was touting the potential for rainfall and winter-like conditions. Now we are looking at a weather forecast that has no rain and a stretch of days forecasted to be in the mid 80’s. Don’t get me wrong, this is incred-ible weather for everyone to come out and enjoy the Club but we sure could use another stretch of precipitation to help our drought stricken State.

We are currently preparing the old nursery area to the right of six fairway that had not been maintained for several years. We will be grading the area and during our core aeration (2/23/15) we will distribute the plugs from our putting surfaces onto this area and grow another nursery green that has turf that is very similar to our greens. We will maintain a portion of the nursery at greens height and the remainder at collar height for future repairs. This area will play as ground under repair moving forward.

As noted above, aerification will be taking place on February 23rd with a standard core aeration of the putting surfaces followed one week later by the DryJect which directly injects sand into the soil profile. These processes are vital to the improvement of the soil structure under our putting surfaces.

I would also like to thank the Membership for the opportunity to attend the Golf Indus-try Show in San Antonio this February. I am looking forward to taking some beneficial educational seminars as well as networking within our industry while I am there. I will also be looking at what our industry has to offer at the Trade Show. This is where we see the newest pieces of equipment, pesticides and other tools we utilize on a daily basis. I look forward to reporting back to the Green Committee when I return. Thank you for your support!

COURTSIDEBy Carol Day

The theme for our January Ladies Day was “Dancing Snowflakes” and it was hosted by Delly Harris and Martha Kaplan. They provided us with delicious sweet treats and an opportunity to finally play some tennis! Two Dancing Snowflakes magically appeared on the courts that day. We had guests Megan Villanueva and Lillian Nevarez arrive dressed as the prettiest snowflakes you could ever hope to meet. They weren’t chilly at all, but rather they were warm and friendly and a lot of fun to play and visit with. We also welcomed another wonderful guest, Eva Attar, to our morning of play. We hope all three of these ladies will consider joining our Friendly Hills Women’s Tennis Association. January also found Jorge’s Tuesday clinics bustling with activity. Everyone was eager to get their groove back. We even gave Jorge quite a workout as you can see by the photos. The clinics are always so much fun and as a side note, they really improve your game. Funny how that works. The theme for our February Ladies Day is “LOVE is in the Air” and will be hosted by Debbie Bratton and Carole Macaulay. We are also looking forward to hosting a morning of tennis with Yorba Linda Country Club this month. Missy Reyna is busy making plans to make it a lovely time for all.

FROM THE TENNIS PROEver had some problem with your toss?

Try this: stand two feet away against the fence as you would before serving, line up your body with one of the fence’s posts and toss the ball. As you do you should check that the toss does not touch the fence and that the ball comes back to your hand without you moving at all. Also you should notice whether your toss followed a straight vertical line, measuring it by the post you have in front of you. Repeat the exercise at least ten times.

Give this a try and see your toss improve dramatically after a few weeks!
