ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA • Be a Canadian citizen• Be between 19 and 35 years of age as of 

December 31, 2010• Be a manager and have been actively involved in

 the company’s daily management for a minimumof two years as of December 31, 2010

• Hold at least 20% of the company’s capital stock 

Candidates from previous years may enter again for thesame or another business, provided that they still meet the eligibility criteria. YEA winners from previous yearsare not eligible.

Entrepreneurs may nominate themselves or be

nominated by an individual, association or organization,or by a representative of provincial or local government.

 You do not have to be a BDC client to apply for a YEA.

Not-for-profit companies

Not-for-profit companies are eligible provided:

• They have organized commercial economic activitiesin Canada

• They may reasonably be expected to be successful:- without subsidies or donations; and- when revenues from government or its subsidiaries

(direct subsidies or support) and donations representa maximum of 40% of the gross revenues.

• They provide services to the general public at areasonable price, taking into consideration the clienteleand local/regional economy.

If the company is a legally registered partnership and all the partners are under 35 on December 31, 2010, allpartners are eligible to receive the award and have their  travel and accommodation expenses paid to attend theawards gala.

If the winning company is a legally registered partnershipand one of the partners is over 35 years of age onDecember 31, 2010, only the partner or partners who satisfy the eligibility criteria may receive the award.Partners who are over 35 years of age may accompany the winner to the awards gala but will be responsible

 for their expenses and accommodation expenses paid to attend the awards gala.

SUBMITTING YOUR NOMINATIONBefore midnight on November 30, 2010, candidatescan mail this form to BDC’s Head Office (see section 8).The nomination form can also be downloaded at www.bdc.ca/yea

The candidate may provide additional informationby attaching any relevant document to complete theanswer to a question (clearly identify the section andquestion number).

Candidates must certify that all the informationcontained in the nomination file is correct.

SELECTION PROCESS

Ten panels across Canada will select the YEA winner for  their province (and territory as applicable). The individualpanels will consist of BDC representatives, sponsor representatives, as well as other members with interestor expertise in entrepreneurship, such as chambersof commerce, local entrepreneurs, academics andprovincial/local organizations.

The following selection criteria apply to all nominees: the originality of the business concept; the company’ssuccess; the company’s growth potential; theentrepreneur’s and the company’s communityinvolvement. The panel also considers the entrepreneur’sage when the business was started and any specialchallenges that were overcome.

 YEA GALA 

The YEA winners will be invited to receive their awardsat a gala which will take place on May 3, 2011inSaskatoon, Saskatchewan.

During an inspiring and colourful ceremony, the winners’accomplishments will be publicly acknowledged andcelebrated by some 300 local business people,representatives of BDC and its partners, as well asrepresentatives of various levels of government. YEA winners will benefit from national media visibility,unparalleled opportunities for networking with other entrepreneurs, valuable media relations training and

many other skills development opportunities.

In 2011, ten YEA will be given according to the following geographical distribution: Newfoundland & Labrador;Prince Edward Island; Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Quebec; Ontario; Manitoba; Saskatchewan; Alberta andNorthwest Territories; British Columbia & Yukon.

The YEA winners could also be eligible for one of the following special awards, to be given during the gala:

The Deloitte Corporate Social Responsibility Award, presented to the winner whose company stands out in terms of practices and policies promoting environmental protection, sound human resources management or community well-being. This award comes with general consulting advice worth $10,000 from Deloitte.

The Cisco Innovation Excellence Award, presented to the winner who has demonstrated innovative spirit,creativity or originality in creating, marketing and promoting his product and service and in growing his business.This award comes with Cisco product/services worth $10,000 to support the winner’s technology growth.
