What's On Race meetings: Kembla Grange (NSW), Taree (NSW), Cranbourne (VIC), Rockhampton (QLD), Pinjarra (WA), Woodville (NZ).

Trainer Gary Portelli has no reason to change the path to the $10,000,000 The Everest (1200m) with star filly She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) as the

dominant Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner builds up for her spring campaign.

The three-year-old filly, who won four of her five starts as a juvenile, will have her first barrier trial at Warwick Farm on 25 August and is set to resume in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley on 29 September.

The race was won last year by 2016 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

The 1000 metre Group One sprint will be She Will Reign’s sole lead-up run to the inaugural The Everest sprint at Randwick on 14 October, for which she is representing slot holder YuLong Investments’ Chinese owner Yuesheng Zhang.

“Everything is going to plan at the moment, so far so good. She has had a couple of short gallops and over the next few weeks she will start to get her ready for the trials on 25 August at Warwick Farm,” Portelli told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“The 1000 metres first up is perfect for her and then she can jump to 1200 metres (in The Everest) second up after two trials.”

Portelli said taking She Will Reign to Melbourne for her return to action was not ideal, but he was reluctant to tackle 1200 metres first up with the brilliant filly.

Moir Stakes before regular jockey Ben Melham returns to the saddle to partner the filly in The Everest.

“She runs 1200 metres out obviously, winning the Slipper, but I think she needs a race before doing that,” he said.

“Unfortunately. The three-year-old races in Sydney are over 1200 metres and I didn’t want to be taking on older horses at weight-for-age over 1200 metres without any racing under her belt.

“It is not ideal having to travel to Melbourne, but three-year-olds have a good record in the Moir, albeit moreso the colts, but I think the 1000 metres suits and the 50 kilograms on her back will help.”

Portelli has mapped out a plan to have the lightly raced She Will Reign in peak condition for The Everest which includes two Sydney barrier trials.

“She will have an 800 metre trial, then a 900 metre trial, a 1000 metre race and then a 1200 metre race in The Everest second up,” he said.

“We’ll then sit back and work out whether we go on with the prep or we bring her back for the autumn for the T J Smith.”

She Will Reign made a dynamic debut when successful by eight and a quarter lengths at Kembla Grange last December before backing up a week later to take out the $500,000 Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) by four lengths. She defeated subsequent Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Diamond Tathagata (Hinchinbrook) on that occasion.

“No one has seen the best of this filly yet. What we saw of her last preparation was the tip of the iceberg really,” Portelli said.

"I know it sounds stupid, but I think the wet tracks bring her back to

the field. She has only had one run on a dry track and that was at Kembla Grange when she equalled the course record.

“The rest of her runs were on rain-affected and wet tracks, so I can’t wait to see her on a dry track and see what she can do.”

She Will Reign’s so-called rags-to-riches story was well documented last season, with syndicator Darby Racing paying $20,000 for She Will Reign at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

The filly was pre-trained by Michael Costa before being transferred to Portelli when Costa moved his stable from Warwick Farm to the Gold Coast.

“She was quite backward early being a $20,000 filly, but I didn’t have anything to do with her early. She did all her breaking-in and education with another trainer,” Portelli said.

“When she came to me from another trainer she was still on the small side but very powerful. Strength is her biggest asset.”

Portelli confirmed Melbourne-based jockey Ben Melham, who rode She Will Reign as a two-year-old except when winning on debut, was on track to be able to make the 50.5 kilogram weight to ride the filly in The Everest.

“I was talking to Benny (on Tuesday) and he is down to 54 kilograms, so he is well and truly on track to make the weight (in The Everest),” he said.

Another talented three-year-old in Portelli’s stable is Single Bullet (Not A Single Doubt), who won the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill as a juvenile.

The colt is nominated for the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) but Portelli said Single Bullet would bypass the race due to a setback.

“He had a bit of a cold. The plan was to go to Melbourne for the McNeil Stakes but I don’t think he will be ready for that race. He is only just starting to do fast work now and more than likely he will resume in the Heritage Stakes at Rosehill over 1100 metres.

“He may only have one or two runs this campaign and my idea will be to have him at his top heading towards the $2,000,000 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in January.”

Single Bullet was a $150,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale purchase by Portelli Racing from the Corumbene Stud draft in June last year.

Despite being broken in later than most yearlings, Single Bullet was able to make his debut in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) on 22 December, finishing runner up to Madeenaty (Exceed And Excel).

“He didn’t have time to furnish. He was just doing everything on sheer ability. He looks a lot better now, but I still think he is going to be another six months before he will be at his top physically,” Portelli said.

“Early on I thought he could match it with She Will Reign at track work, but obviously when they started working I was too scared that they would hurt themselves galloping together because they are very competitive horses and go too fast.

“On his times at track work I thought he would match her, but she obviously just kept on improving and she went on with the job.

“While he won a Group Three, the runs on the heavy tracks were not his best, so we are looking forward to seeing him on a dry track as well.”

Another stablemate Seababe (Sebring), who ran in the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at her only start as a juvenile, is nominated for stakes races during the spring including the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield on 14 October.

Seababe is set to resume at Kembla Grange in a three-year-old maiden plate (1400m) today after finishing runner up in two recent barrier trials, the latest at Randwick on 24 July over 1050 metres.

“I am thinking she is a filly I am going to aim at the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington. She is a nice 2000 metre type of filly. I gave her a run in the Magic Night Stakes as a two-year-old, just to give her a bit of education,” he said.

Meanwhile, two-year-old winner Falconic (Nicconi), who ran in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) for Portelli, has been sold to race in Hong Kong.

“They knocked back an offer for Niccolance and then he broke down the next day, so when they got an offer for Falconic they took it,” he said.

“It is disappointing for us because I thought he would improve into a really good colt, but we will get to see how he goes in Hong Kong.”

Australia

Hey Doc Accepted For Aurie’s StarTony McEvoy’s four-year-old Hey Doc (Duporth), the trainer’s first Group One winner in his own right since establishing McEvoy Mitchell Racing, will resume in the Aurie’s Star Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington on Saturday. A winner of the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in the autumn, Hey Doc drew barrier eight in the field of ten with regular jockey Luke Currie in the saddle. "I'm very happy with him and I'm looking forward to getting him back to the races," McEvoy said. "He didn't do a lot in his trial but I was very pleased with him and he's done a nice piece of work since.”

Dunn Excited By Star RideDwayne Dunn says he is delighted to secure the unexpected ride on Group One winner I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) who resumes in the Aurie’s Star Handicap on Saturday. From barrier seven, Dunn expects I Am A Star to take up a forward position in the $150,000 race. "She takes up a beautiful position in running, and she gives a great sight every time, so there's no reason why Saturday's event will be any different,” Dunn told Racing.com. "If you win, you like to hope you can stay there. She's a lovely filly that you'd like to be a part of this preparation, she's got some nice races ahead of her and she's a high-class galloper." Rocket Tommy Ready For City TestThe Gwenda Johnstone-trained Rocket Tommy (Hold That Tiger) is set to return to action over 1000 metres at Flemington on Saturday. The six-year-old has been off since running last in the Bel Esprit Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Caulfield in April, but Mick Johnstone, husband and stable spokesman for the Echuca-based Johnstone, said he had excuses for that run. "A horse kicked the back of the stalls and he dove forward and hit his head," Johnstone

said. "He had blood from the sinuses and that's why he didn't keep going.” He also confirmed that Saturday’s VRC Member Charles White Handicap was being used as a stepping stone towards The Heath Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield on 2 September. Click here to view the Flemington acceptances.

Field Of Eight For RosebudA total of eight runners have accepted for The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday, including the Gerald Ryan-trained Group Three placegetter Menari (Snitzel). The three-year-old, who also ran fourth in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) last season, will race from barrier five for jockey Josh Parr in the $150,000 sprint. The unbeaten Siege Of Quebec (Fastnet Rock) has also been declared by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, while the Godolphin-raced Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) runner up Trekking (Street Cry) will race from barrier two under Brenton Avdulla.

Clark Pleased With Quebec BarrierJockey Tim Clark believes unbeaten colt Siege Of Quebec will be able to use his inside barrier in The Rosebud to good effect. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) has led all the way at both starts so far, firstly at Newcastle on the Beaumont track on 27 June before backing it up with victory in a two-year-old handicap (1400m) at Rosehill on 15 July. “He is a pretty talented colt… who is up and running and going well,” Clark told Sky Sports Radio yesterday. “He is pretty laidback and switches on when something challenges him, which is a good trait to have. Back in trip is not ideal, but we can make it a bit of a test in running.”

six in Saturday’s The Rosebud, will be ridden by jockey Blake Shinn for the first time in the $150,000 race. Trained by Mark Newnham at his Randwick stable, Diamond Tathagata won a 900 metre barrier trial at Randwick on 24 July, his second hit out this campaign. “It was my first time on Diamond Tathagata and I was really impressed by what I felt. He is a really imposing type,” said Shinn, who partnered the colt in a gallop at Randwick last Saturday morning. “He captures your eye when you see him and get on him. He was a Group winner last prep and I think he has made nice progression as a three-year-old and I think he is going to be a force in anything he runs in.”

Lightz Bids To Break MaidenCo-trainers Jim and Greg Lee are not afraid of taking on a high-class group of three-year-olds in The Rosebud with their gelding Lightz (Sepoy). The son of Sepoy (Elusive Quality) raced five times as a juvenile, with the best result being a third placing on debut at Randwick on 8 October. He did, however, compete in high-class two-year-old races from then on, finishing fourth behind Veranillo (Medaglia d’Oro) in the Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1100m), fifth in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) and seventh in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). Lightz has been given three barrier trials this preparation, winning his latest over 740 metres at Randwick on 8 August. “He’s a November foal, that’s what beat him last time,” Greg Lee said. "We thought we’ll have a crack at getting him to the Slipper but he just wasn’t mature enough. He’s more horse this preparation. He’s matured right up.” Click here to view the Rosehill acceptances.

Peter and Matthew Giadresco, Profit Street took out the H G Bolton Sprint (Listed, 1200m) on a Heavy 8 surface last start on 29 July, two weeks after winning a Benchmark 72+ Handicap (1300m) at the same course. Profit Share, who will be ridden by Brad Parnham from barrier one, is joined by Battle Hero (Stratum), Dezzies Dream (Coats Choice) and Beaufine Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner It’s It (Knowledge) in the $100,000 Listed race. Runaway On Path To Spring ChampionThree-year-old Runaway (Manhattan Rain) could be on his way to the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) after delivering on his promise with a breakthrough victory in a maiden handicap (1550m) at Canterbury yesterday. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt led throughout to win yesterday’s race, having finished runner-up at his previous two starts at Grafton and Rosehill. "He's just strengthening and improving all the time," Bott said. "We've got the option now we've won the maiden to space his runs a little bit and work back from a nice race for him."

Regimen Continues Winning RunThree-year-old filly Regimen (Sepoy) yesterday kept her unbeaten record intact with an impressive two length victory in a Benchmark 71 Handicap (1250m) for three-year-old fillies at Canterbury. The James Cummings-trained filly made a winning debut at Gosford on 11 July and backed it up yesterday with an all-the-way victory, defeating the Gary Portelli-trained Sebring Express (Sebring) and the Ron Quinton-trained Devolving (Your Song). “She’s very high maintenance but she’s got a lot of ability,” assistant trainer Darren Beadman said. “It was an intelligent ride from Corey (Brown). He went forward when they kicked up underneath him and then he tried to get a few cheap sectionals.”

Oscietra To ResumeOscietra (Exceed And Excel), the first foal of unbeaten champion Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), will have her second race start in a Geelong Synthetic Maiden Plate (1000m) on Friday.

The three-year-old filly, who is trained by the Lindsay Park operation, will be partnered by Regan Bayliss in the $25,000 maiden. Oscietra was third to Limestone (Helmet) on debut at Flemington on 1 January and has not raced since, although she has had two recent jump outs, one at Geelong on the synthetic course and most recently at Flemington last Friday. “She worked well on Tuesday morning and importantly has been eating well since the jump out,” co-trainer David Hayes said. “She’s matured and thickened and we’re really looking forward to Friday.”

Maher Weighing Up Merchant Navy OptionsThe immediate future of well-bred colt Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock), who was unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old, remains uncertain with trainer Ciaron Maher weighing up races in Sydney and Melbourne for the three-year-old. Merchant Navy, who won the Anzac Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington on 25 April before being spelled, could resume in the H D F McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield on 2 September or The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) on 9 September. A $350,000 Inglis Sydney Easter Yearling Sale graduate, Merchant Navy won at Pakenham and Sandown Hillside before travelling to Sydney for the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) when he was an emergency and failed to gain a start. He then returned to Melbourne to take out the Listed race.

September Return For Royal SymphonyExciting colt Royal Symphony (Domesday) has returned to the Flemington stables of trainer Tony McEvoy and is set to resume in September in what will be a short build-up to the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on 14 October. Royal Symphony won his three starts last preparation, including taking out the Gibson Carmichael Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Flemington on 8 July before a short break. “He is in tremendous order. He has got five weeks before his first up run on 16 September,” McEvoy told Sky Sports Radio. The race McEvoy intends to start Royal Symphony off in is the Exford Plate (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington and he could then run second up in the Caulfield Guineas a month later.

Spieth To Trial Ahead Of ConcordeGroup One-placed sprinter Spieth (Thorn Park) is expected to barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Monday ahead of his first up run in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick on 2 September. The Bryce Heys-trained entire, who was runner-up in the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington in February, will be given a quiet time in Monday’s barrier trial on his home track. Spieth is being touted as a potential candidate to take up a slot in The Everest on 14 October if he can return in strong form this spring.

Trial Victory For Miss Andretti ColtMr Hamilton (Nicconi), who is a three-year-old colt out of former brilliant sprinter Miss Andretti (Ihtiram), yesterday won a Pakenham Synthetic barrier trial over 1000 metres. The Robert Smerdon-trained colt, who is owned by Miss Andretti’s owner Sean Buckley, is the second foal out of the Group One-winning mare. Her first foal, who was born in 2009, was unraced and she missed or slipped for the next four years. "I don't think it was a great trial and I don't know what the time was like, but certainly he is showing potential,” Smerdon told Racing.com. "I'm not sure if he'll go to the races now or have another trial but if he's anywhere near up to what she was, there's a lot to look forward to." Miss Andretti had a colt by Shamus Award (Snitzel) born on 27 January 2016 and is due to foal to the same stallion this month.

Spirit Of Boom Colt Also Wins TrialA colt by Eureka Stud’s first season sire Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) ran out an impressive winner of a two-year-old barrier trial at Waverley in New Zealand on Tuesday. The Andrew Campbell-trained unnamed colt showed plenty of speed to win by eight lengths over 600 metres in a time of 38.94 seconds under Johnathan Parkes. The colt is out of a winning half-sister to Group Two winner Express Air (Piccolo), and he was purchased for NZ$40,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from the draft of Bradbury Park. Spirit Of Boom is standing for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) this spring.

Europeans In Cups ContentionA clutch of high-class European horses are being considered for a potential Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) campaign, according to Racing Victoria’s international recruitment officer Leigh Jordon. The Andreas Wohler-trained Group Two winner Red Cardinal (Montjeu), who is raced by Australian Bloodstock, is expected to travel to Melbourne in the spring, while proven Group-race performers St Michel (Sea The Stars), Francis Of Assisi (Danehill Dancer) and Barsanti (Champs Elysees) are also possible contenders. "A lot has been said about Andreas Wohler's horse Red Cardinal," Jordon told Racing.com. "He won very well in America in the Belmont Gold Cup, so he's definitely worth watching.”

Sayed Aimed At Wyong Gold CupUS-bred European import Sayed (Stormy Atlantic) is expected to line up in the Wyong Gold Cup (Listed, 2100m) and the Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) next month after making it four wins from six starts this preparation. The in-form five-year-old gelding made it back-to-back wins when successful in a Benchmark 85 Handicap (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday. Waller said Sayed was the ideal horse for the Wyong and Newcastle features. He has also not ruled out a tilt at The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) in the spring. “He’s a mature horse now so this is the time to get in with those up-and-coming horses with a light weight and into the Newcastle and Wyong Cups,” Waller said. “He could come back here next year with top weight in a Wyong or Newcastle Cup. I love a horse like him with confidence. It's a big thing."

First Metropolitan Winners For Guthmann-ChesterQueensland apprentice Jag Guthmann-Chester yesterday rode his first metropolitan winners when securing a winning double at the Sunshine Coast. Based on the Gold Coast, Guthmann-Chester guided the David Vandyke-trained Exceed Battle (Exceed And Excel) in a Class Three (1000m) race. Later in the day, the apprentice jockey rode Windy Sands (Ekraar)

to victory for veteran Eagle Farm trainer Barry Baldwin in a Class Four handicap (1200m). “I am keen to give metropolitan racing a real go this season,” Guthmann-Chester said. “Last week was my first Saturday in the city and I have a few more rides this Saturday.” He is apprenticed to Gold Coast trainer Bruce Hill, who believes the jockey can make an impact in city company.

Hot Dipped Out For Six MonthsTasmanian-trained stakes-winning four-year-old Hot Dipped (Written Tycoon) has been sidelined by a tendon injury and will be out of action for at least six months. Trained by Brendan Mcshane at Broadmarsh, the mare has won eight of her 13 starts, including three at stakes level, and resumed with a promising second at Caulfield in a three-year-old handicap (1200m) on 15 July before injury struck. Hot Dipped was due to run in Melbourne again this month, but was found to have a minor lesion on her tendon. She is expected to need at least six months in the paddock to allow the tendon to heal.

Injured Lever On ImproveChad Lever, who was seriously injured in a race fall at Scone on Tuesday, remains in John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle as he recovers from head injuries. Initial doctor reports said Lever, who fell from the Jason Deamer-trained Anticipate (Danasinga), sustained bleeding on the brain and a large gash to his forehead. Lever was also complaining about a sore jaw and thumb. "Chad is doing better and is a lot more alert,” a statement from Racing NSW said yesterday. "A plastic surgeon is expected to see him yesterday for the big gash above his eye. Chad still has soreness to his jaw and thumb which will be x-rayed. He will be monitored after his concussion and may be transferred to a Sydney hospital in a day or so."

Prize Money Boost For NSW Country FeaturesFeature races in the country in New South Wales will carry increased prize money of $150,000 this season, Racing NSW announced yesterday. The Port Macquarie Cup (2000m), the Wellington Boot (1100m), the Tamworth Cup (1400m) and the Wagga Town Plate

(1200m) will all have a purse of $150,000. “These are well established country feature races. The increase will provide impetus for the clubs to further develop these race meetings and build their recognition not only within racing, but within their local community,” Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys said. The Country Showcase schedule, which sees all races at designated meetings carry prize money of $30,000, increased from 40 to 45 meetings this season. The implementation of the $150,000 races means the Race Fields fee turnover tax imposed on bookmakers is increased from the standard two per cent to 2.5 per cent.

Green Charged For Race Day TreatmentWangaratta-based trainer Russell Green will face three charges relating to the raceday treatment of a horse in his care. Green will face the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on 29 August after allegedly treating Overton Onyx (Dubleo) on 6 April, the day he was due to compete at Wangaratta. Green has been charged with alleged administration, or attempted administration, of a solution containing Green Amino drench, Blud powder and water via syringe to Overton Onyx.

Pennuto To Face StewardsMornington-based trainer Trent Pennuto and stable employee David Price will face the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on 23 August facing charges relating to the stomach tubing of a horse. Racing Victoria stewards yesterday charged the pair after allegedly attempting to stomach tube Chatober (Gonski) on 25 May, the day she was due to race at Moe. Chatober has won once from 11 starts and is now in the care of Moruya trainer Bernie Connell.

Brown And Panya SuspendedSydney jockey Corey Brown has been outed for a week for his winning ride on Regimen at Canterbury yesterday, forcing the rider to miss the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) meeting at Randwick on 19 August. Racing NSW found Brown shifted in on the James Cummings-trained Regimen, causing interference to the Blake Shinn-ridden Colosimo, who in

Belmont AbandonedThe recent spell of wet weather in Perth claimed yesterday’s midweek meeting at Belmont. Around 45 millimetres of rain fell in Perth in the lead up to the meeting and surface water on the track led to the stewards abandoning the fixture. There is an eight race card scheduled for Belmont on Saturday, with the Belmont Newmarket (Listed, 1200m) the feature race.

Nymph Monte On Track For HastingsDual stakes winner Nymph Monte (Tavistock) is on course for the Hawke’s Bay carnival at Hastings following a solid barrier trial at Waverley on Tuesday. The gelding is to be given another barrier trial at Foxton later this month ahead of his return to competitive action. “It brought him on again and he did it all under his own steam,” part-owner and trainer Grant Nicholson said. “He’ll trial again on 22 August at Foxton and then head to Hastings. At this stage, he will run on the first day in the open mile and then into the open 2000 metre handicap on the second day before the Livamol Classic.”

Hasahalo Kicks Off In Gold TrailTalented three-year-old Hasahalo (Savabeel) will begin her new season in the Hawke’s Bay Breeders’ Gold Trail Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Hastings next month. The filly has not raced since finishing unplaced in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on 1 April. “We know she goes well fresh and she is just thriving on her fast work,” trainer Stephen McKee said. The winner of last season’s Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and runner-up in the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m), Hasahalo’s main target will be the 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton in November.

Stakes Increased For Rearranged MeetingThe rescheduled Oamaru Cup (1600m) meeting will have significantly increased prize money. The original fixture on 26 July was abandoned due to a waterlogged track but has been rearranged for Friday 25 August with boosted stakes, with the feature Oamaru Cup now worth NZ$35,000.

Woodville AbandonedToday’s race meeting at Woodville was yesterday called off after officials inspected the waterlogged course yesterday. The inspection found the Woodville surface to be inconsistent, leading the Racing Integrity Unit with no option but to call off the meeting. New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing will consider adding or splitting races where possible in the coming weeks to make up for the loss of today’s race meeting.

Tan To Send Out Strong Kranji TeamChampion Singapore trainer Alwin Tan is set to saddle three runners in tomorrow’s S$80,000 Class Three (1000m) at Kranji. Tan has Shadow Of War (Sebring), Conflight (Host) and Mystic Master (Snippetson) entered in the 1000 metre race as he continues his pursuit of Mark Walker in the trainers’ premiership. “Conflight is somewhere close to his old form, I think,” Tan said. “Shadow Of War should run a better race after his first run from a long break of six months. Mystic Master will probably sit off the pace from the wide gate. I hope he can run well. Based on the way Mark Walker is going and the gap in between, it’ll be very tough to catch him.”

Give Thanks Stakes To EziyraThe Aga Khan-bred and raced filly Eziyra (3 f Teofilo - Eytarna by Dubai Destination) ran out a convincing winner of the Give Thanks Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Cork on Tuesday evening. The Dermot Weld-trained three-year-old, who won the Weld Park Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) as a juvenile and ran third in the Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) last month, drew clear under Pat Smullen to

register a comfortable two and a half length win over Bloomfield (Teofilo), with Wild Irish Rose (Galileo) a further half a length behind in third. Eziyra is one of 67 stakes winners for Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo).

251 For GalileoThe Aidan O’Brien-trained Sir John Lavery (3 c ex Race For The Stars by Fusaichi Pegasus) won the Platinum Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Cork on Tuesday evening to provide champion sire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) with his 251st stakes winner. The colt finished strongly from off the pace under Seamie Heffernan to beat Rose De Pierre (Dubawi) by three lengths, with Pavlenko (Deep Impact) a further three and a half lengths adrift in third. Galileo again stood for a private fee at Coolmore Stud earlier this year.

Almanzor Entered In Champions StakesThe Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) features among 49 entries for the Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Ascot on 21 October. The four-year-old colt won the Group One in convincing fashion from Found (Galileo) last season, and he is due to make his belated reappearance in the Prix Gontaut-Biron (Gr 3, 2000m) at Deauville on 15 August. Multiple Group One-winning filly Enable (Nathaniel) also holds an entry in the £1,300,000 Ascot feature, alongside the Aidan O’Brien-trained Classic-winning pair Winter (Galileo) and Churchill (Galileo).

Ribchester Heads QEII EntriesGodolphin-raced triple Group One winner Ribchester (Iffraaj) features among 48 entries for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Ascot on 21 October. The four-year-old finished second to champion filly Minding (Galileo) in the prestigious Group One last season and could face fellow Godolphin-owned Group One winner Barney Roy (Excelebration) in the £1,100,000 race. Aidan O’Brien has handed dual entries in the Champion Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes to Winter and Churchill, as well as Group One-winning filly Rhododendron (Galileo), while recent Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) winner Here Comes When (Danehill Dancer) has also been entered.

Caravaggio Given Champions Day Entry

Dual Group One-winning sprinter Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) has been entered for the British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Ascot in October, with plans to run in The Everest (1200m) the same month shelved by connections. The colt lost his unbeaten record in the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) last month

and ran sixth in the Prix Maurice De Gheest (Gr 1, 1300m) at the weekend, but he has won both of his starts over the straight six furlongs at Ascot. A total of 41 runners have been entered for the £600,000 sprint, including last year’s winner The Tin Man (Equiano) and the Group One-winning three-year-old Harry Angel (Dark Angel).

Lot 186 Orb - Flashy American colt FASIG-TIPTON

@anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com| 14 |

A colt by Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) winner and Claiborne Farm stallion Orb (Malibu Moon) made seven figures on the second and final day

of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale on Tuesday to finish the auction as joint-top lot.

The March-born yearling, catalogued as Lot 186, was purchased by Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock for US$1,000,000 from the draft of Gainesway, agent, to finish as the most expensive purchase at the two-day sale alongside Lot 45 who was sold on Monday.

The colt is the first foal out of the Grade Three-winning mare Flashy American (Flashy Bull), while this is also the family of multiple Grade Three winner I’m Already Sexy (Ready’s Image) and winner Bishop Again (King’s Bishop).

Kerri Radcliffe, who spent US$3,950,000 in total on six yearlings at the sale on behalf of Phoenix Thoroughbreds, said the Orb colt was her favourite yearling at the sale and that he was likely to go into training with Bob Baffert.

"It's so exciting to come here and buy the elite horses in the market," Radcliffe told the Racing Post.

“We're doing it in the USA and we're going to be doing it in Europe, and not just on the racing side of things. We're going to be buying stallions, mares and everything on the breeding side. This is a long-term investment.

"This was actually my favourite colt of the sale, I'm really delighted to get him. I'd like to say this horse is going to Bob (Baffert), if he'll have him."

Earlier in the session Radcliffe purchased Lot 132, a Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) filly out of the stakes placegetter Auction (Mr Greeley) for US$800,000, meaning she purchased two of the top seven lots at the Saratoga Sale for Phoenix Thoroughbreds.

A colt by leading sire War Front (Danzig) was purchased for US$995,000 by Godolphin to finish as the third top lot at the select sale.

Catalogued as Lot 226, the Gainesway-consigned colt was the second last lot to go under the hammer but sparked plenty of

interest, with David Loder striking the winning bid on behalf of Godolphin following a spirited bidding duel with Coolmore.

"We just thought he was a very nice horse and we were keen to have him, Sheikh Mohammed in particular. At that level, we were very pleased to get him," Loder told the Racing Post.

The April-born colt is out of the winning mare Lerici (Woodman), making him a brother to the 2016 Rodeo Drive Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) winner Avenge and a half-brother to the stakes winner Lira (Giant’s Causeway).

This is also the same family as Grade Three winners Grasshopper (Dixie Union) and Turf War (Dixie Union), and Loder said he expected the colt to make more than his final sum.

"We thought he might go a little higher. I’m sure Sheikh Mohammed will be very happy to have him," he said.

Loder also confirmed that the colt would head to Europe to be trained by one of Godolphin’s trainers, either Charlie Appleby or Saeed bin Suroor.

Elsewhere at the Saratoga Sale on Tuesday, a filly from the first crop of Grade One-winning two-year-old Strong Mandate (Tiznow) sold for US$825,000.

Catalogued as Lot 198, the filly is out of the Grade Three-winning mare Graeme Six (Graeme Hall), making her a half-sister to the Grade Three-winning pair Cali Star (Street Cry) and Delightful Joy (Tapit).

She was purchased by trainer Mark Casse on behalf of Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation from the draft of Baccari Bloodstock and her new owner views her as an exciting broodmare prospect.

"She’s very well made, well put together," Weber told Bloodhorse.com. "We hope she’ll be able to put herself together and someday bring her home as a broodmare.

"I think the sale’s been strong. When the horses are good, they’re good, and that’s usually the rule of thumb, and it’s been that way for a long time."

A colt by Arrowfield Stud shuttler Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux) also proved popular on the final day of the sale on Tuesday, selling to OXO Equine for US$750,000 from the draft of Gainesway.

The March-born colt was catalogued as Lot 129 and is a half-brother to one winner,

out of a half-sister to Grade Two winner Indian Firewater (Indian Charlie).

"I like Animal Kingdoms," Larry Best of OXO Equine told Bloodhorse.com. "It's early. This particular individual appears to have great strength, good conformation, and was worth a bet.

"I wasn't sure (how high he would go). Animal Kingdom is an up-and-comer. There have been some recent wins (from Animal Kingdom progeny) and this horse looked very familiar to the ones that have been winning. So (the price) didn't surprise me."

Australasian-based buyers were also active at the sale with Mulcaster Bloodstock going to US$575,000 for a Medaglia d’Oro colt who was catalogued as Lot 122. Offered by Gainesway, the colt is out of the dual Listed winner Anne Of Kiev (Oasis Dream) who has produced one winner from two foals to race to date.

“We were invited to Saratoga last year by Fasig-Tipton and had a great time,” Guy Mulcaster told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“This year a group of mine and Chris Waller’s owners have returned to celebrate my 50th birthday. We looked at a number of horses, got a short list and were lucky enough to secure Lot 122.

“I thought that he was a beautiful physical type that will furnish over the next six months. I was surprised that we secured him and admit that we had fired all of our bullets. He will be raced with a great group of owners and friends.

“It is intended that he will do his early racing with Ger Lyons in Ireland and decide later as a three-year-old if he comes to Australia.”

China Horse Club meanwhile purchased two lots in association with Maverick Racing, going to US$250,000 for a Speightstown (Gone West) colt and US$300,000 for a son of Vinery shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo).

Across the two days, Fasig-Tipton reported that 156 lots sold for a total aggregate of US$52,995,000, an increase of 16 per cent over the US$45,570,000 gross for 156 sold a year

The Robert Smerdon-trained sprinter Ability (Reward For Effort) [113] capped his rapid rise through the classes and remained unbeaten

this preparation by taking out Sunday’s Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Sandown Lakeside - taking a new peak Timeform rating in the process.

Ability’s winning sequence commenced when he resumed after being gelded and scored a first-up win in a Benchmark 78 Handicap (1000m) at Moonee Valley on 3 June taking a Timeform rating of 98.

Two starts later, he recorded his first stakes victory in winning the All Victorian Sprint Series Final (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington on 8 July, quickly advancing his Timeform rating by six pounds with a 104-rated victory.

Ability now remains unbeaten in four starts this preparation after finishing strongly to win the Bletchingly Stakes on Sunday with a Timeform rating of 113, a leap of nine pounds on his previous peak figure and 15 pounds on his first-up win.

His 113 rating also compared well with past winners of the Bletchingly Stakes, matching the rating of 2015 winner Smokin’ Joey (Encosta De Lago) [113], a rating that is also the average recorded by winners of the race over the past five years.

Ridden patiently by Dwayne Dunn, Ability raced in last place in the ten-horse field behind a solid pace before coming with a late run to defeat Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice) [112] by half a length with Duke Of Brunswick (Magnus) [100] three and a half lengths away in third.

The runner-up Lankan Rupee was having his first start this year and his promising performance returned a 112 Timeform rating, a very encouraging figure even if a long way below the multiple Group One winner’s lofty 132 peak rating.

The third-placed Duke Of Brunswick returned a 100 Timeform figure, five pounds under his 105 career best. He kept running on well from back in the field in a promising first-up performance.

While last year’s Bletchingly Stakes winner Lord Of The Sky (Danerich) again led the field, he faded to finish sixth for a rating of 87, well below his 106-rated victory last year.

At the Randwick meeting on Saturday, the Kris Lees-trained mare Invincible Gem (I Am Invincible) [115] upstaged her more fancied stablemate Le Romain (Hard Spun) [115] with a win in the Missile Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Resuming after her second in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in March, Invincible Gem had a good run just behind the leaders before running on to defeat Le Romain by just over a length with The Monstar (California Dane) [115] a head away in third.

The now four-year-old mare returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 115, two pounds above her effort when runner-up in the Randwick Guineas.

Invincible Gem, who now looks set for a big spring campaign, measured up well to recent winners of the Missile Stakes, with a Timeform figure seven pounds above 2016 winner Tycoon Tara (Written Tycoon) [108].

Her 115 Timeform rating also matched the last five year’s winner’s average figure for the weight-for-age race.

The runner-up Le Romain also went well

as he was trapped wide before fighting on well for a good first-up second, also returning a 115 Timeform rating, ten pounds below his 125 peak when second in the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) before spelling.

The Monstar in third continued his strong recent form, running to 115 as well, the same figure he has returned at his last three starts.

Earlier in the day the Chris Waller-trained stayer Sayed (Stormy Atlantic) [107p] continued his good form with a dominant five and a quarter length victory in the Benchmark 85 Handicap (2400m).

Sayed has now won four of his six starts this campaign and he impressed in running right away from his rivals, for a new career-peak Timeform figure of 107p.

The improving five-year-old ran some nine pounds above his previous best achieved the start prior when winning a Benchmark 78 Handicap (2400m) at Warwick Farm on 8 July.

Sayed is now likely to target some Group staying features in the spring and he could find himself lining up in a race like The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on 30 September but he will need to improve again off that 107p-rated effort to be effective in that race.

the race off the back of an impressive maiden success over six furlongs at Chepstow, and he was always travelling noticeably strongly in the hands of William Buick.

The seven-runner field fanned out across the track approaching the final furlong and Barraquero picked up best to win comfortably by a length and a quarter from Nebo (Kodiac), with the Group Two-winning favourite Cardsharp (Lonhro) a further two and a quarter lengths adrift in third.

The previous day, the Karl Burke-trained Havana Grey (2 c Havana Gold - Blanc De Chine by Dark Angel) made all the running against the stands rail to land the Molecomb Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) at Goodwood.

The progressive colt, who had won twice at Listed level previously, forged clear in the closing stages under P J McDonald to beat Invincible Army (Invincible Spirit) by a length and three quarters, with To Wafij (Kodiac) a nose further behind in third place.

On Saturday, the Richard Hannon-trained De Bruyne Horse’s (2 c Showcasing - Right Rave by Soviet Star) made a successful raid across the English Channel when landing the Prix des Jouvenceaux (Listed, 1400m) at Vichy.

The two-year-old was able to put his last start failure in the Prix Robert Papin (Gr 2, 1100m) behind him and beat Red Line (Sageburg) by a neck with another length and a quarter back to Fastidious (Zanzibari) in third.

There were plenty of informative two-year-old stakes races in Europe last week, particularly at the five-day Glorious Goodwood festival which ran from 1-5 August.

Former champion trainer Sir Michael Stoute looks to have unearthed a potential star in Expert Eye (2 c Acclamation - Exemplify by Dansili), who ran out an emphatic winner of the Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Goodwood last Tuesday.

The Juddmonte Farms-raced two-year-old colt made a winning debut over six and a half furlongs at Newbury on 15 June, and he took a huge step forward on just his second career start in the £200,000 Group Two.

He cruised through the race under Andrea Atzeni and shot clear in the closing stages to beat the Godolphin-raced Zaman (Dutch Art) by four and a half lengths, with Mildenberger (Teofilo) a further three quarters of a length behind in third.

The son of Acclamation (Royal Applause) is now the 4/1 pre post favourite for next year’s 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m).

The promising colt Barraquero (2 c Zebedee - Chica Whopa by Oasis Dream) stretched clear in fine style to win the Richmond Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Goodwood last Thursday.

individual Group winners in Australia in 2016/17 were bred in Europe

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Winter (3 f Galileo - Laddies Poker Two by Choisir) ran out a comprehensive winner of the Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday, her fourth straight victory at Group One level.

The dual 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner was tackling a mile and a quarter for the first time, and she was always travelling best in the six-runner field in behind the leaders the hands of Ryan Moore.

She was produced to lead around a furlong and a half from home, and she ran on strongly to

win by a length and a half from the running-on Blond Me (Tamayuz), with Godolphin's Sobetsu (Dubawi) a further neck behind in third.

The daughter of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) was last sighted winning the Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) on fast ground at Royal Ascot, but she showed her versatility over a new trip on stamina-sapping ground to land the £600,000 feature in good style.

She could now head to the International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2.5f) at York on 23 August at her next start.

The John Gosden-trained three-year-old Stradivarius (Sea The Stars) kept on strongly to run down the favourite Big Orange (Duke Of Marmalade) in the Goodwood Cup (Gr 1, 2m) on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood.

The colt, who won the Queen’s Vase (Gr 2, 1m6f) at Royal Ascot at his last start, was delivered with a sustained run approaching the final furlong by Andrea Atzeni to land the £523,000 feature.

Stradivarius, who was receiving 13lb from the Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f) winner Big Orange

on the weight-for-age scale, was a length and three quarters ahead at the line, with fellow three-year-old Desert Skyline (Tamayuz) a further three and a half lengths adrift in third.

Stradivarius will now be aimed towards the final Classic of the British season, the St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m6.5f) at Doncaster on 16 September.

The Peter Schiergen-trained Lacazar (3 f Adlerflug - Laey Diamond by Dai Jin) produced an impressive performance to win the Preis Der Diana (German Oaks) (Gr 1, 2200m) at Dusseldorf on Sunday.

The three-year-old filly, who won the Preis der Mitglieder des Hamburger Renn-Clubs (Gr 3, 2200m) at her previous start, was restrained in midfield in the early stages by jockey Andrasch Starke before she was produced to lead approaching the 200 metres.

She quickened up in pleasing fashion to beat Megara (Motivator) by three quarters of a length, with the Godolphin-raced Group One winner Wuheida (Dubawi) a further four lengths adrift in third.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Crystal Ocean (Sea The Stars) ran out an impressive winner of the Gordon Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday, in the process providing Stoute with his tenth win in the race.

Sent off the well-supported 6/4 favourite, Crystal Ocean came into the race off the back of two good performances at Group Two level, running third behind Permian (Teofilo) in the Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f) at York in May and most recently finishing third behind the same horse in the King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) at Royal Ascot.

The Sir Evelyn De Rothschild-owned colt travelled strongly throughout the race and, after being ridden to lead just over a furlong out, he quickened away in decisive fashion to beat Khalidi (High Chaparral) by three and a half lengths with Mount Moriah (Mount Nelson) a further length away in third.

High class sprinter Brando (5 g Pivotal - Argent Du Bois by Silver Hawk) secured his breakthrough Group One victory in the Prix Maurice De Gheest (Gr 1, 1300m) at Deauville on Sunday afternoon.

The gelding, who had won twice at Group Three level previously, finished third behind Harry Angel (Dark Angel) in the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket last month and also ran third in last season’s British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Ascot.

The Kevin Ryan-trained gelding cruised through the race under Tom Eaves and showcased a smart turn of foot to beat Aclaim (Acclamation) by half a length with another length and three quarters back to Tupi (Tamayuz) in third.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained dual Group One winner Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) ran flat and could only manage a disappointing sixth, with plans to tackle The Everest (1200m) in October shelved as a result.

The seven-year-old Here Comes When (7 g Danehill Dancer - Quad’s Melody by Spinning World) caused a huge shock when landing the £1,000,000 Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) on testing ground at Glorious Goodwood last Wednesday

Persistent rain in the south of England during last week turned conditions soft during the five-day meeting, and the mud-loving son of the late Danehill Dancer (Danehill) relished the rain-affected surface to score at odds of 20/1.

The Godolphin-raced favourite Ribchester

(Iffraaj) towed the field along under William Buick, but he was swamped approaching the final furlong and it was Here Comes When who prevailed in a bunched finish under Jim Crowley, with Ribchester rallying to finish a neck behind in second.

The Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Bateel (5 m Dubawi - Attractive Crown by Chief's Crown) ran out a ready winner of the Haras Firmamento Prix de Pomone (Gr 2, 2500m) at Deauville on Sunday.

The five-year-old mare was most recently seen taking out the Pinnacle Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Haydock on 10 June, and she stayed on strongly on the approach to the line to beat Traffic Jam (Duke Of Marmalade) by just a neck with another length and a half back to the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Abingdon (Street Cry) in third.

Bateel is likely to return to England in October for a tilt at the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Ascot.

OverviewEuropean import and Group One winner Vadamos (Monsun) will

shuttle to Rich Hill Stud this spring. The Australian-owned six-year-old was retired having finished

fourth in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and Emirates Stakes (registered as Mackinnon Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) during the Melbourne spring carnival.

In total, he won eight and placed in five of his 20 career starts in Europe, Dubai and Australia, amassing prize money earnings of $1,226,115.

Vadamos finished second in both of his two-year-old starts before breaking his maiden early in his three-year-old campaign, during which he secured a breakthrough stakes success in the Prix Frederic de Lagrange (Listed, 2400m) in July 2014.

Having added the Oettingen-Rennen (Gr 2, 1600m) to his record at Baden-Baden the following season, the Andre Fabre-trained son of Monsun (Konigsstuhl) went on to secure a further three stakes races in France as a five-year-old.

He took out the Prix du Muguet (Gr 2, 1600m) and Prix Messidor (Gr 3, 1600m) before landing the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr 1, 1600m) in convincing style at Chantilly in September last year.

“Vadamos is a magnificent individual with a race record to match. He’s arguably the fastest and best bred son of Monsun to go to stud and we’re delighted to have secured him for Australasian breeders,” Rich Hill’s John Thompson said.

Vadamos is one of six named foals out of the stakes-winning mare

Celebre Vadala (Peintre Celebre), herself a half-sister to the dual Group One winner Valixir (Trempolino), making him a half-brother to three winners.

His second dam is the stakes winner Vadlamixa (Linamix), whose progeny also include the stakes-placed dam of Group One winners Vazira (Sea The Stars) and Vadawina (Unfuwain).

Vadawina herself is a highly successful broodmare, having produced Group Two winner Vadamar (Dalakhani), Group Three winner The Pentagon (Galileo) and stakes winner Vedouma (Dalakhani).

Furthermore, this is also the family of dual Group Three winner Vadapolina (Trempolino) and stakes winner Vadsalina (Sagacity).

Vadamos will stand for an introductory fee of NZ$15,000 (plus GST) this spring.

Analysis: Godolphin-raced four-year-old gelding Demolition scored a good first-up win, taking his record to three wins from four starts. He settled back in ninth place, on the rails, behind a good tempo before looking for a run (between runners) on straightening. He got a split shortly afterwards, hit the front at the 100m and then held on to win well.

Analysis: Greg Eurell-trained four-year-old gelding Pablo’s Express is a promising young stayer following his impressive win in 3YO Maiden (1600m) at Pakenham on 14 July with another very good win, advancing to 1715m here. He began well, settled in fifth place (one off the rails) before making a quick move (deep) nearing the home turn. He got to the front at the 100m and then went on to score well.
