Group One winners English (Encosta De Lago) and Ugo Foscolo (Zacinto) are set to spearhead the Gai Waterhouse

and Adrian Bott stable’s charge at The Championships during the Sydney autumn carnival.

The pair both won Warwick Farm barrier trials in impressive fashion yesterday, their second public hit outs this campaign, and are ready to resume in the coming weeks.

English, who defeated subsequent Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Terravista (Captain Rio) in a Warwick Farm 811 metre barrier trial on 6 February, won heat four yesterday over 800 metres on the same track in a time of 47.60 seconds.

Ridden by Blake Shinn, the Newhaven Park-owned English sat off Group Three-winning sprinter Redzel (Snitzel) in the early stages, before sprinting quickly late to win the heat by half a length.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Redzel, who was also having his third barrier trial this preparation, finished second, with the Chris Waller-trained Group One winner Japonisme (Choisir) another five lengths away in third.

Group Two winner Happy Clapper (Teofilo) finished sixth, six and three quarter lengths behind All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner English, who was unplaced in four starts at Group Two and Group One level during the spring.

“She didn’t quite come in the spring for us, but her best form has always been in the autumn and she has come back every bit as well as we’d hoped,” Bott told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“She’s holding her condition well and she seems a really happy mare at the moment. Her two trials have been brilliant.

“We’re following a similar path to last autumn with her, which was successful for us, and we’ll see her kick off in the Challenge Stakes in two weeks’ time.”

New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Ugo Foscolo also impressed for Waterhouse and Bott at Warwick Farm yesterday, winning heat one over 1200 metres by seven lengths stopping the clock at 1:13.50 on a Soft 5 track.

Formerly trained by Stephen Marsh in New Zealand, Ugo Foscolo

also trialled well at Warwick Farm on 6 February with Josh Parr riding, who partnered the gelding again yesterday.

On that occasion, Ugo Foscolo finished sixth, beaten one length, behind English and Terravista, his first barrier trial since winning the New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton on 5 November last year.

“He came over at the start of the year and settled in beautifully and we’re really happy with this horse,” Bott told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“He has strong form in New Zealand and we’ve got Doncaster plans with him. We’re just finalising the road to get there, but he may potentially run first up in the Canterbury Stakes.

“He’s a really strong miler, so we’ll probably see the best of him when he’s up to 1600 metres to 2000 metres and really like what we’ve seen from him at this point in time.”

Bott said Ugo Foscolo needed a longer spell after a lengthy New Zealand campaign before joining their Randwick stable, meaning the three-year-old missed the Sydney three-year-old races such as the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

“He came over and we just had to give him a bit more time to put on that extra condition that we needed,” he said.

“We would love to have seen him go around in the three-year-old races, but we were patient and took a longer-term view with a very talented horse who is well and truly capable in some of these weight for age races.”

Listed winner Kentucky Miss (Foxwedge), meanwhile, will now be

Tuesday 21 February 2017 English Ready To Return After Brilliant Trial

aimed at The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill on 18 March after the three-year-old filly impressed her trainer Joe Pride when she won a 797 metre barrier trial at Warwick Farm yesterday.

Contesting heat 11, Kentucky Miss jumped best from a wide barrier but slotted into fourth spot for jockey Corey Brown before quickening nicely under a hold to win by a head over maiden winner Thorin (Sepoy) in 48.50 seconds.

Placed behind Star Turn (Star Witness) in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) last August, Kentucky Miss went on to win the Cap D’Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Flemington at her next start.

Pride, who spelled Kentucky Miss after her sixth placing behind Spright (Hinchinbrook) in the Red Roses Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington on 3 November, said the filly would resume in the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Randwick on 4 March.

“Kentucky Miss has come back in terrific order,” Pride told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“It was a lovely trial and she will resume in the Challenge Stakes en route to a possible start in The Galaxy.”

Bott and Waterhouse also had a number of juveniles barrier trial at Warwick Farm yesterday, including placed filly Sheikha (Sebring) and Speed Street (Al Maher), who both won their respective heats.

Sheikha, who finished second at Kembla Grange on debut before finishing unplaced in the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) behind She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) in December, narrowly won heat six after leading

all the way over 800 metres in 48.60 seconds. The filly is raced by Emirates Park having been purchased by the operation for $350,000 at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Widden Stud.

The Michael Freedman-trained Sasso Corbaro (All Too Hard) finished second, with Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Overreach’s sister Marishka (Exceed And Excel) running third.

“She was doing it all naturally last prep, but she’s always been a fine, delicate filly. She’s really filled out, furnished and hopefully we can see a bit more from her this time in,” Bott said.

“Obviously the Slipper will come up a bit too soon for her, but hopefully we can see her feature in some of the two-year-old fillies races over the carnival.”

Bott said the Rosemont Stud-owned Speed Street had surprised the stable with his rapid progress and ability to win his first barrier trial yesterday. The two-year-old colt is likely to be aimed at the Queensland Winter Carnival and early three-year-old races in Sydney.

Chris Waller-trained juvenile filly From Within (Not A Single Doubt), a dominant debut winner at Canterbury on 31 December before finishing unplaced in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m), won heat seven in 47.90 seconds over 800 metres.

The Blue Sky Bloodstock-purchased filly narrowly defeated the talented John O’Shea-trained Demerara (Commands) in the heat and could resume on 4 March in a bid to make it to the Golden Slipper Stakes.

Seven Nominated For FuturityNominations for Saturday’s Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield have been extended after only seven entries were taken for the weight-for-age race. Trainer Darren Weir looks set to have more than half the field with four nominations headed by multiple Group One winner Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars). Weir also has Group One winners Palentino (Teofilo) and Lucky Hussler (Husson) entered as well as Japanese import Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact) who is first up. Last year's winner Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj), who finished second to Black Heart Bart in the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), was also entered along with Ecuador (High Chaparral) and He's Our Rokkii (Roc De Cambes).

Missrock To Run In Oakleigh PlateGroup Three-winning filly Missrock (Fastnet Rock) is expected to run in Saturday’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield after her campaign was delayed after a float accident last week. The Robbie Laing-trained three-year-old was due to run in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) last Saturday but was scratched due to the incident. "With all of the elite sprinters running last Saturday, I doubt any of them will back-up and she races very well at Caulfield," Laing told Racing.com. "She won her first start coming from last on the turn in the Debutant and with the blinkers on first-up from a spell it might be her chance to get some Group One black type."

Newitt Chases Third Oakleigh PlateCraig Newitt will attempt to win his third Oakleigh Plate on Saturday when he rides the Mick Price-trained three-year-old Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) at Caulfield. Newitt rode Extreme Choice to victory in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as a juvenile and also to win the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m)

in the spring. He has won the race previously on Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice) and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice). “(Extreme Choice) is obviously a lot stronger physically this time in,” Newitt said. “His trials have been good. His work has been good. So he’s ticking over very nicely. His work and trials suggest he’s going every bit as good as he was last preparation.”

Limestone Could Head To SydneyTrainer Darren Weir confirmed on Sunday that promising two-year-old Limestone (Helmet) would miss Saturday’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) but has not ruled out the filly running in Sydney. Bred and owned by David Moodie, Limestone will be given a freshen up for ten days at his country property before returning to Weir’s stable. "If they are happy with her, then she'll come back into work then we'll go to Sydney for the two-year-old fillies race," Weir told Racing.com.

Property A Confirmed StarterThe Robert Smerdon-trained Property (Starcraft), a winner of the two key Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) lead up races, is a definite runner in Saturday’s Group One race. Owner David Price had until yesterday to pay a $55,000 late entry fee for the two-year-old gelding to run in the race. “He had to win the Prelude to warrant going on and he has done that so he earned his chance,” Smerdon said. “And that’s what we’re doing, rolling the dice. Barriers and run of the race are going to separate a lot of these horses. There’s not much between half a dozen of them, so we need a barrier and we need a good run.”

Good Book For Rides For Moreira At CaulfieldProperty will be ridden by the Hong Kong-based jockey Joao Moreira at Caulfield on Saturday and he has also been booked to ride Sheidel (Holy Roman Emperor) for Lindsay

Park in the Oakleigh Plate, the Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained pair Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas) and Cliff Hanger (Canford Cliffs) in the Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) and the Autumn Classic (Gr 2, 1800m) respectively. He will also ride Savanna Amour (Love Conquers All) in the Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).

Blue Diamond Barrier Draw TodayWith the barrier draw announced today, Property looks likely to face a high-class field, these headed by the unbeaten Lindsay Park-trained filly Catchy (Fastnet Rock), who landed the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m) on 11 February. Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Formality (Fastnet Rock) also looks set to run in Saturday’s race, while Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) runner-up Tulip (Pierro) is among the entries. Team Hawkes could have two runners including, Saturday’s Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) winner Ducimus (Snitzel) and the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) placegetter Showtime (Snitzel). Other notable nominations include Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) and Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Aspect (Pluck).

Chateau Griffo Out Of DiamondBlue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) placegetter Chateau Griffo (Sebring) has been ruled out of the Blue Diamond Stakes by Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths. The two-year-old filly, who is part-owned by Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, suffered a setback since her promising debut third and connections have decided to bypass Saturday’s $1,500,000 juvenile race at Caulfield.

The United States To ResumeThe Lloyd and Nick Williams-owned The United States (Galileo) is expected to resume in Saturday’s Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Caulfield after a four-start spring campaign that

included victory in the Crystal Mile Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). The Group One winner will be ridden by Ben Melham in the Peter Young Stakes, while Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) winning stablemate Assign (Montjeu) is likely to run first up in the Mornington Cup Prelude (Listed, 2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Winx $1.10 Favourite For Chipping NortonChampion mare Winx (Street Cry) has opened the $1.10 favourite for the Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in which she will be chasing her 15th consecutive victory and tenth Group One win. Saturday's Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick has attracted 13 nominations including six of Winx's Chris Waller-trained stablemates. Trainer Chris Waller is confident she is spot-on for the 1600 metres at Randwick on Saturday, the second of her four scheduled starts in Sydney this campaign. "We just have to manage her now," Waller said. "She is where we need her to be." After attracting only 13 entries the nominations for the $600,000 have been extended and will now close at 11am today.

First Seal Set To ResumeGroup One winner First Seal (Fastnet Rock) will resume in Saturday’s Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick. The five-year-old mare won the Tristarc Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in the spring before running eighth in the Myer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. She looks set to face ten rivals including Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense) and Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) placegetter Danish Twist (Dane Shadow). The entries for the race have been extended until today at 11am.

Global Glamour Heads Surround Stakes NominationsFresh from her win in the Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick last week, dual Group One winner Global Glamour (Star Witness) heads the nominations for Saturday’s Surround Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained three-year-old filly looks likely to face the Chris Waller-trained Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Omei Sword (High Chaparral), who also holds a nomination. Omei Sword could

be joined by stablemate Foxplay (Foxwedge), who was last seen running a narrow second to Global Glamour in the Light Fingers Stakes. After yielding only 13 nominations the Surround Stakes nominations have also been extended until today at 11am.

Darabad Unlikely To RunTrainer Robbie Laing is unlikely to run Listed-winning European import Darabad (Dansili) in the Peter Young Stakes or the Mornington Cup Prelude. The four-year-old entire, whose last start was at Chantilly on 11 September last year, missed a crucial barrier trial at Cranbourne yesterday when the track was deemed unsafe and abandoned. "He was supposed to trial on Monday and it was really important to his program that he had a 1500 metres barrier trial but that hasn't happened so I'll just have to see how he gallops on Tuesday morning," Laing said yesterday. "If he isn't able to trial and I can only give him a gallop then I think he probably won't run on Saturday." Click here to view the Caulfield nominations.

Zielke Confident About Ruby Red HeartDebut two-year-old winner Ruby Red Heart (Show A Heart) could be a legitimate Queensland Winter Carnival contender, according to her Toowoomba-based trainer John Zielke. The juvenile was heavily backed to win on debut at Doomben on 11 February over 1200 metres and will run over 1350 metres at the same track on Saturday. "I have a lot of time for Ruby Red Heart and she lived up to the wraps I have on her by winning her first start," Zielke said. "It is the first two-year-old of the season over 1350 metres at Doomben on Saturday. I think she can win and then come back for races like the BRC Sires Produce in the winter." Click here to view the Doomben nominations.

Golden Slipper Order Of Entry ReleasedUnbeaten filly She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) heads the order of entry for the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) after her win in Saturday’s Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) at Rosehill. Catchy who won the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) is next on the order of entry, just ahead of the John O’Shea-trained Veranillo (Medaglia d’Oro), who finished runner-up behind She Will Reign on Saturday. Other notable entries include Michael

Freedman-trained Teaspoon (Snitzel) and the Magic Million 2YO Guineas (RL, 1200m) winner Houtzen (I Am Invincible). Meanwhile Canonbury Stakes winner Pariah and the Paul and Peter Snowden-trained Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) winner Khan (Exceed And Excel) also appear on the order of entry list for the $3,500,000 race. Click here to see the full Order Of Entry.

Hartnell Top Weight For DoncasterMultiple Group One winner Hartnell (Authorized) is the top weight for the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick in April after the handicaps were released by Racing NSW yesterday. Hartnell, who was given 58 kilograms for the Doncaster Mile, is a doubtful runner with his John O’Shea-trained stablemate Hauraki (Reset), the early $8 favourite, to carry 56.5 kilograms. Hauraki won the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) in the spring at Randwick carrying 56 kilograms. Group One-winning sprinter Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) has also been given 56.5 kilograms for the $3,000,000 race on 1 April. Click here to view the Doncaster Mile weights.

Black Heart Bart Second Top WeightFour-time Group One winner Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars), who recently added to his Group One haul when he took out the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on 11 February, has been allotted the second top weight of 57 kilograms for the Doncaster Mile at Randwick. The Darren Weir-trained gelding shares the second line at the weights with Hong Kong-trained entrants Beauty Only (Holy Roman Emperor) and Helene Paragon (Polan). If Group One-winning three-year-olds Prized Icon (More Than Ready) and Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) were to line-up in the race they would carry 53 kilograms.

Almandin Top Weight For Sydney CupMelbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Almandin (Monsun) has been handed the top-weight of 58 kilograms in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Randwick on 8 April. However the Robert Hickmott seven-year-old, who has not been seen since he beat Heartbreak City (Lando) in the Flemington feature, is unlikely to line up in the $2,000,000 race with Lloyd Williams

indicating he is only likely to have one run this autumn. The Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained Our Ivanhowe (Soldier Hollow) has been allotted the second top-weight of 57 kilograms, while the Willie Mullins trained pair Max Dynamite (Great Journey), who ran second in the Melbourne Cup in 2015, and Wicklow Brave (Beat Hollow), who finished unplaced in the race last year, have been given 56 kilograms.

Ryan’s Pair To Gallop The Gerald Ryan-trained pair Chauffeur (Snitzel) and Star Of Monsoon (Lonhro) will take part in an exhibition gallop over 800 metres at Rosehill tomorrow. Chauffeur, who was purchased for $1,600,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Strawberry Hill draft, was last seen running a narrow second to Houtzen (I Am Invincible) in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast. Meanwhile, Star Of Monsoon has not been seen since running second behind Eckstein (I Am Invincible) over 1200 metres at Rosehill in October.

Big Duke Well Ahead Of Launceston CupThe Darren Weir-trained Big Duke (Raven’s Pass) tuned-up for his tilt at tomorrow's Launceston Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) with a gallop at Mowbray on Sunday. The five-year-old gelding, who was most recently seen running second in the Hobart Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) on February, was joined by stablemate Unfurl (Raise The Flag) in the gallop, who will also line up in $200,000 race. Big Duke, who has drawn barrier 13, will be ridden by Ben Allen and is currently leading the betting with CrownBet at odds of $2.50, while Unfurl, who will be partnered by Dean Yendall, has drawn barrier three and is a current $8 chance.

Cranbourne Trials AbandonedBarrier trials programmed for Cranbourne yesterday were abandoned after heavy overnight rain forced them to be called off. Racing Victoria officials had investigated rerunning the barrier trials today, but said the track surface remained unsuitable to conduct the heats and subsequently abandoned the program.

Fraad To Appeal SuspensionQueensland jockey Robbie Fraad will appeal a

suspension imposed at Ipswich last Friday for careless riding on Bo Rossa (Testa Rossa), his fourth ban this year. Bo Rossa was found to have caused Forbidden Kisses (Bel Esprit) to be severely checked near the line. As it stands Fradd, who had only returned from another suspension on Friday, will be out from 26 February to 12 March.

Excess Knowledge RetiredDual Group Three-winning entire Excess Knowledge (Monsun), a European import who won a Doncaster Prelude (Gr 3, 1500m) and Lexus Stakes (registered as Hotham Handicap) (Gr 3, 2500m) and contested two Melbourne Cups (Gr 1, 3200m), has been retired due to injury. Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the seven-year-old won five times and placed a further nine times from 26 starts for prize money earnings of $740,742. A son of late German stallion Monsun (Konigsstuhl), who is also the sire of Melbourne Cup winners Almandin, Fiorente and Protectionist, Excess Knowledge is being offered for sale as a stallion prospect by syndicator Round Table Racing. Any interested parties should contact Natasha Slade: [email protected].

Stud Secretary Sought At NewgateNewgate Farm is seeking an experienced and motivated person to join their administration team. The role will include; management of the stallion covering book, entry of horses for yearling, mare and other sales, management of staff accommodation for sales, preparation and lodgement of stallion stud book returns, production of horse related reports for management and clients and assistance with monthly invoicing of stud procedures. The role will be based on their property near Aberdeen. The applicant must have relevant experience in the thoroughbred breeding industry to be considered for the position. Written applications should be emailed to [email protected].

Perfect Fit’s Future UncertainThe immediate racing future of talented mare Perfect Fit (Elusive City) after pulling up with an issue following her below par performance in the NRM Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) at Te Rapa on 11 February remain uncertain. “She had mucus in

her trachea post-race,” said Haunui Farm’s Mark Chitty, who bred and co-owns the mare. “Even though she sat three wide it helped to explain the below par effort, she was eased out of the race the last bit. She’s being treated and we’ll see what transpires in the next week and then see if we can get her back to the races competitively.” Australian Beckons For Volkstok’n’barrellMultiple Group One winner Volkstok’n’barrell (Tavistock) is likely to campaign in Australia but trainers Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs are yet to decide in what state the five-year-old will race. After campaigning in Sydney in Brisbane last year, Volkstok’n’barrell returned to New Zealand this preparation, winning the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on 11 February. “He’ll run in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie and then we’ll have to make a decision which direction we take – Sydney or Brisbane,” Logan said.

Derby Next For WyndspelleThree-year-old colt Wyndspelle (Iffraaj) is set to run in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Ellerslie instead of the Haunui Farm WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m). Co-trainer Donna Logan said the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) winner would stick to his own age in the New Zealand Derby next start. “He’s going to the Derby and not Otaki,” Logan said. “He’s very well and he’ll probably have an exhibition gallop somewhere to top him off.”

Queensland Derby Aim For TavidreamWyndspelle’s three-year-old stablemate Tavidream (Tavistock) is being aimed at the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in Brisbane during the winter. Trained by Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs, the gelding has won two of his four starts including over 1500 metres at Ellerslie on Saturday. “We’ll give him a bit of a break now and head in that direction,” Logan said. “He’s a pretty smart horse.”

Gingernuts Confirmed For DerbyLightly raced Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m) winner Gingernuts (Iffraaj) will make a late bid for the New Zealand Derby after Te Akau Racing confirmed a late entry yesterday. The three-year-old Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained three-year-old took his record to three

wins from six starts and registered his first stakes victory at Ellerslie on Saturday. “We’re going to run Gingernuts in the Derby, where he’ll be ridden by Opie Bosson,” Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis said. “Our other runner, Beaumarchais, will be ridden by Michael McNab.”

Shocking Luck SoldTe Akau Racing has sold Waikato Guineas placegetter Shocking Luck (Shocking) to Hong Kong connections, but the three-year-old gelding will remain in the care of trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards. A winner of one of his five starts, Shocking Luck was placed in the Waikato Guineas last start and is being set for the Queensland Derby. “Shocking Luck will be spelled at Te Akau Stud before he is prepared for the Queensland winter carnival,” David Ellis said. Group One winners Hall Of Fame (Savabeel) and Heroic Valour (Fastnet Rock) will also be part of the Brisbane-bound team.

UAE Trainers Disqualified For CobaltTwo trainers have been banned for a year by the Emirates Racing Authority after horses in their care were found to have above the permitted level of cobalt in post-race samples. Trainer Musabbeh Al Mheiri has been suspended

for 12 months after Vivernus (Street Cry), winner of a Meydan maiden on 14 January , had been above the set limit of 100 miligrams of cobalt per litre of urine. While ERA also published the outcome of another horse, who had finished second in an Arab race at Al Ain on 19 November last year and trainer Hassan Al Hammadi was found guilty of administering cobalt to the horse and was also suspended for a year.

Charismatic DiesDual Grade One winner Charismatic (Summer Squall) died on Sunday at the age of 21 at the Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement centre. Charismatic won five of his 17 starts, including the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and the Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5) and was retired after sustaining multiple fractures in his left front leg in the Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f). He entered stud at Lane's End in 2000 and stood there for three seasons before relocating to Japan in 2002 and was pensioned at Old Friends in 2016. He sired seven stakes winners, these are headed by Group Two winners Wonder Acute and Sun King.

Not A Single Doubt Colt Tops Perth Yearling Sale

A colt by Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) topped the first session of the two day Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale yesterday after Gangemi Racing went to $325,000 to secure the colt from the Amelia Park Racing and Breeding draft.

Catalogued as Lot 50, the colt is out of the More Than Ready (Southern Halo) winning mare Sambar making the him a half-brother to the Dan Morton-trained Group Three-winning filly Samovare (Savabeel), who won the Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) last November.

Further back, the October-born colt is from the same family as Group Two winner Press The Button (Encosta De Lago), Group Three winner Rio Carnival (Hussonet) and Listed winner Nevet (Zeditave).

Amelia Racing Park and Breeding, who sold three yearlings for a total aggregate of $470,000, and Sharon King the operation’s racing manager was very happy with the sale of the session topper.

“We’re absolutely over the moon, though we were expecting a good result,” King told ANZ Bloodstock News. “We thought we would get $300,000 and we were confident of that just given the amount of interest he had had. He’s such a cracking type, we just couldn’t produce any better is how we felt about him. A lot of time and effort went into him - he’s a great colt.”

Michael Gangemi explained he had earmarked this colt during inspections, so was very happy to be taking him home.

"We narrowed it down to a few (lots)," Michael Gangemi said. "And he was the main one we wanted.

"We had to wait and bide our time and we're really happy to get him."

"The stallion Not a Single Doubt is on fire, they get up and run and Westspeed is very attractive to us."

"He's beautifully balanced and is a great walker,” Gangemi continued. “He's a strong

horse and we're delighted to have acquired him and moving forward hopefully we can get him up and going for the early two-year-old races."

"His attitude is amazing as well. I'm sure he got pulled out a lot of times and there were a lot of good judges on him."

He will be now sent into training with Chris Gangemi.

Later on that day another from the Amelia Park draft also realised six figures, when a colt by Sebring (More Than Ready) was purchased by Electra Bloodstock Pty Ltd / Pearce Racing for $105,000.

The colt, catalogued as Lot 134, is out of winning-mare Yodeller (El Moxie), herself a half-sister to Listed winners Magdalena (Snaadee), Social Soldier (Pirate Army) and Aneed (Danewin).

King explained she was pleasantly surprised the colt made as much as he did.

“We were a little bit surprised,” she told ANZ Bloodstock News. “He wasn’t overly big when he was born - he was quite small but he just kept improving. When we got him into the yearling prep he just kept thriving and thriving and continued to get better day by day. That was a little bit of a surprise result with him. It’s been a good sale.”

King added that for buyers there were plenty of bargains available at the sale: “The quality is selling very well but there are some great bargains there,” she said.

“Overall for the breeders they are putting in a lot of time and effort and probably not getting what they deserve for a lot of these horses, but for buyers looking for bargains they are just everywhere at this sale.”

A colt by the Widden Stud-based Star Witness (Starcraft) was one of eight yearlings to make six figures on day one after he was bought by Ric Wylie Bloodstock for $160,000.

Perth Yearling Sale

Gervase Park Stud-consigned colt, catalogued as Lot 109, is the second foal out of the Econsul (Pins) winning-mare Trading Halt. Her first foal is a two-year-old, while Trading Halt is a half-sister to the Tramway Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) winner and Group One-placed Bank Robber (Dash For Cash).

Meanwhile the colt’s third dam Currabahah (Northern Spring) is a sister to the dual Group Three winner Northern Copy (Northern Spring) and she produced the Group Two winner Ponton Flyer (Flying Spur), the dam of Listed winners Black Vanquish (Lonhro) and Minnesota Shark (Lonhro).

Chris Gales explained he was very satisfied with the sale of the Star Witness colt.

“We are particularly happy with the Star Witness - Trading Halt colt. He was an exceptional horse, very athletic. It was a great result,” he told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“I think certainly the Star Witness exceeded expectations.”

Wylie said the colt is by a sire who is popular at the moment given the performance of his leading progeny this season.

“He’s by a sire that’s been on everyone's radar for the last six months with the success of Star Turn and Global Glamour,” Wylie told ANZ Bloodstock News. “He’s a nice horse that stood out. He is probably slightly more expensive than one or two of the similar Star Witnesses last week in Sydney but he is one of the picks of the sale and we are very happy to have gotten him.

“He will go to the client’s farm, Washpool Lodge in Queensland, and be broken in and we’ll decide his future in six months time. At the moment he is probably one to race, but we’ll look at all options when he’s been broken in.

Wylie believes the trade day one of the sale was very strong saying the quality of this year’s catalogue was very good.

“We’ve found the market strong for the nice horses - as strong as any other sale in Australia. Nice horses have competition, they’ve got an extremely good buying bench. It’s the first time Damian and myself have attended the sale and we’ve been impressed by the quality of horses and we’ve got several that we’re looking at for tomorrow as well.”

Gervase Park Stud was responsible for the most expensive filly of the day, after a daughter of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) made $130,00 selling to Ben Pearce Racing.

The filly, catalogued as Lot 39, is out of the four-time winner Risktaker (Orientate), herself a half-sister to Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) winner Perfect Reflection (More Than Ready), Group Three winner Ideal Image (More Than Ready) and Listed winners New Image (More Than Ready) and Elusive Image (Elusive Quality).

“The Written Tycoon - Risk Seeker was a great result again,” continued Gale. “She has terrific residual value being out of a half-sister to Perfect Reflection. She’s a very athletic filly and we were very happy with the result.”

Gale said that he had been confident going into the sale given the success over the last 12 months of the Woodside Park-based Written Tycoon.

“We thought with the way Written Tycoon has been running, particularly hot, that she (Lot 39) would make six figures, but it was a good result.”

Gervase Park sold six yearlings for a total aggregate of $498,000, which included a filly by Blackfriars (Danehill), which was purchased by Trevor Andrews for $90,000.

The filly is out the Group Three-winning Geiger Counter (Mr Prospector) mare Sister Patricia, making the filly a half-sister to the Listed winner Bush Aviator (Stratum).

“Also with the Sister Patricia (Lot 75) filly. She’s (Sister Patricia) an older mare but was a good mare on the track and has been a good mare in the breeding barn. We are again very happy with the result. She exceeded expectations,” explained Gale.

At the close of trade on day one, Magic Millions reported a total aggregate of $4,330,000, up 11 per cent on the corresponding session last year, after a total of 113 lots sold at an average price of $38,319.

having bought the top lot while Neville Parnham Racing spent $275,000 on seven lots.

Amelia Park finished the day as the leading vendor by average with their three yearlings averaging $156,667 followed by Gervase Park Stud whose six yearlings averaged $83,000. Mungrup Stud meanwhile lead the vendors table by aggregate having sold 16 of the 22 lots they offered for $551,000 at an average of $34,438.

The Mungrup Stud-based Oratorio (AUS) (Stravinsky) was the leading sire by average (with three or more lots sold) after nine yearlings by him sold yesterday for $447,000 at an average of $49,667.

Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox said he was satisfied with performance of the sale, however he was disappointed with the clearance rate yesterday which had slipped to 72 per cent, having been up at 77 per cent on day one last year.

"There's been some very, very good sales obviously with the top price of $325,000," said Cox.

"We are disappointed with the clearance rate - sitting around 72 per cent. By our standards we'd like to be at 75 per cent or even into the 80s."

"The numbers are very much in line with Day One last year and there's some very nice horses tomorrow and I'm hoping for a good finish to the sale."

"When the good horses come into the ring the competition is fierce," Cox added.

Slipper To Slipper … Darby Reigns

Scott Darby wasn’t admitting to how many times he had watched the replay of She Will Reign winning the Group Two TAB Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill, but it’s fairly safe to say it was at least twice.

“She (She Will Reign) was just so relaxed on Saturday,” Darby points out, who also sourced and syndicated another outstanding filly in Yankee Rose. “There was all the talk about She Will Reign missing the start but she settled well and is just so switched on.

“Both Yankee Rose and She Will Reign have quiet natures, but She Will Reign is really aware of all that is going on around her and knows where the finish line is. Even at track work, Gary (Portelli) tells me that she pricks her ears, grits her teeth and just goes for it.”

That will to win certainly served the 2YO filly well in Saturday’s Silver Slipper and following her performance, was immediately vaulted into favouritism for the $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper on 18 March.

Darby is the founder and managing director of Darby Racing, which has built up an enviable

syndications record since opening shop and has the distinction of ‘finding’ two of Australia’s best juveniles in successive seasons: Yankee Rose and She Will Reign.

Both fillies were sourced from the Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale, with the former costing $10,000, while the latter was knocked down for $20,000.

Yankee Rose has subsequently compiled $2.1 million from her nine outings, which include victories in the Group One ATC Sires’ Produce and Champion Stakes, while She Will Reign’s three from three has seen her bank $458,650.

“Our syndicate members are pretty pleased,” Darby understates. “She Will Reign’s syndicate is a totally different ownership to that of Yankee Rose. We had bought around 10 yearlings at the Classic in Yankee Rose’s year and about the same number in 2016 when we got She Will Reign.

“We knew quite a bit about She Will Reign before we purchased her. For starters, her sire Manhattan Rain, is also the sire of another of our buys in Scarlet Rain (a Group winning 2YO who was purchased for $100,000 at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale). By the time She Will Reign came along, Scarlet Rain had won her first two starts.

“What’s more, She Will Reign’s dam Courgette was originally broken in by Darby’s Racing Manager, Mark Holland, and after she finished racing, was sent to Manhattan Rain on a foal share by long-time client, Gary Bachell. She Will Reign was raised at Middlebrook Valley Lodge, with whom we have a close relationship as well. So, we knew a bit about her by the time she got into the ring.”

Darby purchased another 10 yearlings at the 2017 Inglis Sydney Classic but admitted it was tougher going this time around: “The average was way up this year and where we spent $20,000 previously, we had to go double that this time around, but if there’s another Yankee Rose or She Will Reign among them, we won’t be complaining!”

Phil Campbell isn’t complaining either. Campbell secured Manhattan

Rain for his Blue Gum Farm in Victoria’s north east earlier this month and said the phone hasn’t stopped - even before She Will Reign’s Silver Slipper.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Campbell enthused. “We (Blue Gum) originally made a play for the horse before he was retired from racing and tried again last year.

“Anyway, his owners (Teeley Assets) were keen to re-locate him to Victoria and we were very keen to stand him. He’s a lovely type with good fertility and has settled in well since arriving two weeks back. It’s worth remembering that the horse is only 11 years old and there’s so much upside.

“Apart from She Will Reign, Scarlet Rain ran second at Rosehill on Saturday, giving the colts around six kilos in the process, and she has now won four from six; Whisky Baron won South Africa’s premier Group One event - the Sun Met - at the end of January ; Promise to Reign was Group placed in January; Wild Rain is a 4-time stakes winner; Tango Rain is due to return soon …

“Huge upside.”

Jockey Tom Queally got off to a perfect start for his three week stint in Macau with an easy win on the Stanley Chin-trained God Get People (Darci

Brahma), in the 25-45 rated Handicap over 1350 metres at Taipa on Friday night.

Queally best remembered as the partner of the great Frankel (Galileo), was enticed to Macau for a three week period by his friend Stanley Chin a former top international jockey now training in Macau.

“Tom was in the states and was looking to do a bit of riding to build his race fitness up before the start of the new season in the UK.”

“I suggested Macau as the perfect spot for him, and the Club was delighted to have him.”

“I have 32 horses in work at the moment and some nice young ones, so I’m sure it’s

going to be a nice couple of weeks.”God Get People with the presence of

Queally on top was sent out a warm favourite and the Irishman gave him a perfect run throughout.

From barrier seven Queally came back out of the gates and found the fence near the back of the pack by the first corner. From there God Get People was able to gradually slide forward on the rails to park right on the back of the leaders coming to the turn. Once in the straight the son Darci Brahma (Danehill) dashed away for a good win.

God Get People is proving useful on the all weather with Friday night’s victory his third on the surface, with another seven placed efforts. Total stakes in his short career now total over HK$650,000.

Queally QuickOff The Mark

Queally got his first look at the track on Winner Fortune (Murtajill) in race two the 0-55 rated event over 1050 metres. Winner Fortune although not a noted sand performer gave Queally a good look at the circuit before his win on God Get People.

In his only other ride for the night Tom Queally almost made it a double with Stanley Chin’s Galaxy Giant (Choisir) who was run down late by King Achilles (Dubleo) in the Class Three Over 1050 metres.

The 32-year-old Queally has had a stellar career to date.

As well as his fourteen straight wins on top of the world’s best racehorse at the time Frankel, Queally has ridden over 1000 race winners including thirty Group One victories worldwide.

Advance Mission (Medicean) bounced back to his best with a dominant win in the 50-85 rated Handicap over 1510 metres on Friday night.

Ridden by Peter Ho the six-year-old English-bred son of Medicean (Machiavellian) was always in a handy spot before striding up three deep to contest the lead around the turn. Once let run by Peter Ho the gelding bounded away for the easiest of wins over Prosperity Star (Pentire), with More Than Happy (Grey Swallow) close up in third.

Prepared by Louis Ho, Advance Mission will now tackle next Fridays Class One Handicap over the same distance, and even with his rise of eight points in the handicaps will be a force to be reckoned with.

The six-year-old has now won six races on the all weather and over HKD$1,200,000 in prize money for his connections The Latona Syndicate.
