Sealed with a (X)People often use the symbol “X” to repre-
sent a kiss at the end of a love note or card
but don’t understand how this letter came to
be associated with the meaning of a kiss. It
is believed the custom dates back to when
the majority of the public was illiterate. The X
or a “cross” was used as one would use their
signature today, to mark a person’s word to
abide by a contract or agreement from a
Christian perspective. The X was often then
kissed as a further symbol of honesty. Even-
tually, the X itself came to represent a kiss
and no longer just a signature. Why the letter
“O” came to represent a hug is not as widely
understood. Some say that it is because an
O is a shape of hugging arms. Others say it
is what Jewish immigrants would use as their
own signature, similar to the X, so they were
not mistaken for Christians.

Now is the time to rekindle the romance with your homeValentine month is the time of year when we seek appropriate ways of expressing our
love for those closest to us. Why not rekindle the romance with your home at the same time? Flowers, candy or jewelry might not get you very far, but asking these three questions is going to show you care:
1. How is your home feeling? It’s often hard to get fresh air into our homes during the winter, meaning pollutants can get trapped inside. If your home has poor indoor air quality you can help it feel better.• Limit the use of products containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in com-
mon household products, such as cleansers and paint. • Consider adding a mechanical ventilation system to provide a controlled source of fresh
air to your home. It can help manage indoor pollutants and excess indoor moisture.2. Is your home warm and comfortable? Conventional fiberglass insulation is like a
wool sweater on a winter day. It might look warm and fuzzy, but it won’t stop cold air from passing through. • Conduct an energy audit of your home to spot key sources
of air leakage, especially around windows and doors and through the attic.
• Consider installing spray foam insulation in your home. It can create an air barrier and help control air leakage, energy loss and airborne pollutants.3. Is your home nice and dry? Indoor mois-
ture can accumulate in the winter months, leading to a musty smell, condensation on windows and even to mold. • Make sure bathroom fans and kitchen hoods are hooked up and
working.• Use proper ventilation to the outdoors when showering or cooking.• Limit the use of humidifiers. Set up a dehumidifier in damp areas inside the home, like
the basement.

Valentine’s Day Movie GuideNo holiday is more synonymous with romance than Valentine’s Day. Every February
14 couples express their feelings for one another with candies, flowers and a host of other romantic traditions.
For couples who want to cozy up on the couch this Valentine’s Day, the following movies make ideal choices to set a romantic mood.
• Casablanca (1942) -- Perhaps no movie of the 20th century is more fitting for Valentine’s Day than this Humphrey Bogart classic. In the midst of World War II, world-weary nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Bogart) finds himself in the middle of a love triangle with his ex-lover (Ingrid Bergman) and her husband (Paul Heinreid) in French-occupied Morocco.
• Out of Africa (1985) -- A seven-time Oscar winner, including Best Pic-ture, this acclaimed film tells the tale of a largely abandoned young wife (Meryl Streep) who falls in love with a free-spir-ited big-game hunter (Robert Redford) in 20th century colonial Kenya.
• From Here to Eternity (1953) -- Another classic, this features the immor-tal scene of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr passionately kissing in the sand as the waves crash over them.
• Roman Holiday (1953) -- Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) is bored and man-ages to escape her entourage of guard-ians while visiting Rome. There she meets American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), whose goal of an exclusive inter-view soon becomes a romantic adven-ture for both.
• The Princess Bride (1987) -- Couples who like some laughs with their romance will appreciate this Rob Reiner fairy tale with a comedic twist. Buttercup (Robin Wright) is beautiful but doomed, chosen to marry an evil prince (Chris Sa-randon). But a smitten stable boy (Cary Elwes) returns from sea to rescue his beloved. A nearly instant classic, the film features hilarious performances from the likes of Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin and the late pro wrestler Andre the Giant.
• Out of Sight (1998) -- Behind the star power of Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney, this offbeat romance is tailor-made for couples who prefer a little adventure with their romance. After a federal marshal (Lopez) finds herself locked in the trunk of a car with a charm-ing escaped convict (Clooney), an unlikely romance soon develops in this film based on an Elmore Leonard novel.

If every family in the country spent just $10 a month with a locally-owned, indepen-dent business instead of a national chain store, over $9.3 billion* would be directly returned to local economies. That means better schools, better roads, more support

Delectable desserts set hearts a-flutterValentine’s Day is synonymous with candlelight dinners, romantic movies and delicious
desserts. Although chocolate is often standard fare for the day of love, many other treats, including petit fours, can win the heart of a special person.
Although people often believe the term petit four refers to a particular recipe for a des-sert, it actually denotes a variety of small desserts. Petit fours are bite-sized pastries gen-erally eaten at the end of a meal or at tea time. The name is comprised of French terms meaning “small oven,” which generally means the desserts are cooked at a low tempera-ture in an oven. Petit fours may be “secs,” meaning “dry” desserts, including biscuits and puff pastries. Most are “glaces,” or “iced” desserts, such as tiny cakes. These are often the desserts people associate with the name “petit fours.”
Cake-type petit fours are traditionally made from an almond flavored sponge cake or an almond genoise. Other types of cake, such as pound cake, can be used, but the consis-tency must be firm enough to handle cutting and filling. The options in fillings and coatings is as endless as the imagination. Some prefer to coat them in fondant, a sugary dough that hardens upon standing and produces a firm, flat surface for decorating. Others like their petit fours covered in chocolate or another candy material.
These desserts are available from many bakeries and retailers. For those who want to treat a Valentine to homemade petit fours, one trick is to bake the batter in mini loaf pans and then cut in half, or use small cupcake tins to achieve the desired, bite-sized shape. Or bake the batter in a sheet pan and then use cookie cutters to make small shapes. Jams, fruit preserves, frosting, icing, almond paste, and any other fillings can be used in between the layers.
Fondant can be purchased from party and craft stores or specially ordered from cake decorating retailers. An easy fondant can be made from a confectioners’ sugar and marshmallow recipe.
After a romantic meal, serve petit fours with a dessert liqueur for the perfect Valentine’s Day dessert.
