The weather these daysseems to be more volatilethan ever -- swinging fromrecord-setting heat waves todeep freezes, seemingly fromone day to the next.

With the weather morevaried and unpredictable, homeowners nationwidehave learned lessons from thepast year and are taking stepsto ensure their houses canefficiently withstand whatev-er Mother Nature dishes out.

It’s all about keeping

homes sealed tightly, so waterand wind can’t leak in andtempered air doesn’t leak out-- causing heating and cool-ing bills to rise.

Beware of FoundationCracks

Water is the enemy of yourhome’s foundation. A changein moisture content of the soilaround your home allowswater to put pressure on thefoundation, causing cracksand leaks.

Dry weather can cause the

soil to shrink, while wet peri-ods can cause it to soften.Poor drainage from your roofor improper ground slopearound your home can funnelwater against the home’sfoundation.

Make sure gutters are cleanand that downspouts extendaway from your home. Checkthat the soil, grass or pave-ment properly slopes awayfrom your foundation.

Insulate EffectivelyUpgrading a home’s insula-

tion is an effective, easy wayto increase energy efficiencywhile decreasing heatingcosts. The attic is a great start, but to achieve maximum effi-ciencies, don’t overlook areassuch as basements and rimjoists.

The U.S. Department ofEnergy estimates homeown-ers could save an average of atleast $250 yearly in heatingcosts by insulating basementwalls. And by insulating crawlspaces and rim joists, the U.S.

Environmental ProtectionAgency estimates homeown-ers can save up to 20 percenton energy bills.

Opting for stone woolinsulation, which is madefrom a combination of natu-ral basalt rock and recycledslag, may provide greaterbenefits than traditionalfiberglass insulation. Onesuch thermal insulation isRoxul ComfortBatt, a fireresistant, water repellantand sound absorbent insula-tion that is well-suited foruse in exterior walls, attics, crawlspaces and basements. It also has a unique fibercomposition and densitythat provides for an optimalfit between studs, joists, around ductwork, electricalboxes and plumbing. Asanother consideration forinsulating, Roxul also offersSafe‘n’Sound, another stonewool insulation productwell-suited for soundproof-ing interior walls and ceil-ings between rooms. Itsunique stone wool composi-tion reduces sound trans-missions by trapping soundwaves and vibrations.

Before undertaking ahome insulation project, do-it-yourselfers can visitwww.diywithroxul.com, toview free “how-to” videosdetailing different insulationprojects.

Inspect Your RoofNothing can ruin a home

faster than a leaky roof.Once yearly, check for signsof damage, such as sagging, aging, cracking, curling, tears or missing shingles.Pay particular attention toareas obscured by shade orvegetation.

Replace shingles that arelifting up or that have rot orheavy moss.

Also inspect gutters, vents, overhangs and flashing.Repairs should be made assoon as you see a small prob-lem, before it becomes alarger one.

Don’t attempt to climb aroof that is steeply sloped.Instead, turn to a profession-al roofer or home inspector.

It’s time for raking leaves, pruningshrubbery, and other seasonal falllawn care tasks.

Never has the old adage “worksmarter, not harder” been more aptthan when tackling yard work andpreparing lawns for next season.

“After a long summer mowinglawns, many people lose enthusiasmfor lawn care when fall hits,” says BobMonahan, creator of the EZ Lawn &Garden product line, and a formerfrustrated leaf-raker looking for cost-effective ways to make yard work eas-ier.

“There are several tips to streamlineyard work -- from knowing the besttime to pull weeds to using the rightequipment to make tasks simpler,” hesays.

Here are some smart ways to han-dle fall lawn care:

Be Body Smart

Good posture can prevent back-aches when raking leaves. Keep yourhead up and back straight. Relieveback pressure by raking using the“scissors” stance: whereby you placeone foot forward and the other back, reversing position after several min-utes.

When mowing, move the mowerwith your body weight as much aspossible, rather than relying on yourarms and back.

And use ergonomically designedrakes, shears and pruners that requireless hand strength than traditionalones.

Rake and Haul EasilyPut away the loud, smelly leaf blow-

er. Nothing is worse than rakingleaves on a windy day, only to havethem blown around.

Try an easier approach.Rake leaves onto a tarpaulin and

drag it away. One innovative tarpsolution is the EZ Leaf Hauler, whichhas been dubbed the “giant dustpanfor leaves.” It’s a modified tarp withsides that holds up to five wheelbar-rows of yard debris. Stakes areattached and can be pressed into theground to hold it in place on windydays.

Approved by the GoodHousekeeping Research Institute, ituses tent construction technology toform sides and a back, and has rein-forced pockets and stitched handlesfor easy hauling and dumping.

And if you already have a tarp, youcan easily clip handles to it to make iteasier to haul when full of leaves. Forexample, the EZ Tarp Tugger is a low-cost option that combines handleswith stakes, so you can keep your tarpin place and then pull it away when itis full of debris to bag or compost.

Remember, dragging leaves away iseasier on your back and environmen-tally friendly.

Weed WiselyWeeding can be made less painful if

you adhere to the old gardener’s trickof weeding after it rains. When earthis dry, it’s harder to pull out the wholeweed without breaking off the top. After rainfall, the ground is damp, making it easier to pluck out entireweeds.

This way, weeds can easily be addedto leaves and other debris that need tobe hauled away.

More information on innovativetools for raking, hauling and baggingyard debris can be found atwww.ezlawnandgarden.com.

Remember, fall is your last chanceto put your lawn in order before nextseason’s warm weather.

Owning a home is a 365-day-a-year commitment -- amortgage to pay, a yard tomaintain and bills to juggle. But experts say that evaluat-ing key exterior elements ofyour home at least onceannually can prevent somebills from skyrocketing.

“The key to saving moneyand keeping a home comfort-ably livable is to be proactivein evaluating and fixing itsmajor components,” says

Mark Clement, host ofMyFixItUpLife homeimprovement radio show anda professional contractor for20 years. “Don’t wait toreplace older, inefficient win-dows until your energy billssoar out of control. Investingin newer, more energy effi-cient and low maintenanceexterior products can have amajor impact on the livabilityand return on investment of ahome and deliver terrific

peace of mind.”If your roof is damaged by

severe weather or is old andleaking, investing in a newroof made of durable polymerslate or shake tiles will pay offfor decades to come. Forexample DaVinci Roofscapesmakes shingles that have a50-year warranty, resistimpact, fire and all kinds ofinsects.

For exterior trim pieces, swap out wood trim that is

susceptible to rotting andinsect infestation with ure-thane and PVC trim prod-ucts.

“Synthetic millwork, likepieces that are available fromFypon, resist moisture, humidity, insects and ter-mites, swelling and rot,”Clement advises. “Once youinstall these low-mainte-nance trim pieces arounddoors, windows, soffits andother exterior areas, you’re

golden.”For functional areas of the

home, like windows anddoors, use solidly-construct-ed, man-made products. Forexample, energy-efficientSimonton vinyl windows anda fiberglass entryway systemfrom Therma-Tru have long-term warranties, and can helpyou enhance the long-termvalue and aesthetic appeal ofyour home while saving onenergy bills.

A recent report on return-on-investment and homerepair, the “Remodeling2011–12 Cost vs. ValueReport” (www.costvsvalue.-com), shows that replacingolder windows with vinylwindows is one of the tenmost popular projects withpayback for homeowners, andhas a higher projected return-on-investment than severalother popular home upgradeprojects, including bathroomremodels or additions andmajor kitchen remodels.

For more home improve-ment ideas that offer greatreturns on investment, visitClement’s website atwww.myfixituplife.com.

“Almost no building prod-uct lasts forever,” he warns.“Homeowners should contin-ually evaluate the exterior ele-ments on their home, research replacementoptions, and invest in prod-ucts that are solidly con-structed by a quality manu-facturer that offers a strongwarranty.”

Fall is the perfect time tocomplete home projects youput off during the dog days ofsummer. There are a numberof basic changes you can doright now that are easy andinexpensive.

Gear UpBefore starting any home

improvement process, makesure your toolbox is equippedwith basic essentials:

A high-qualitylevel/ruler that works hori-zontally and vertically is amust-have for anyone handy.Opt for one with a handle tokeep it in place while you’remeasuring, leveling and get-ting a clean edge for drawingor cutting.

A crescent wrench is aversatile tool with a slidingjaw that allows for use on dif-

ferent size nuts and bolts.Tighten any faucet in notime!

Go beyond the flatheadscrewdriver and Phillipsscrewdriver and give yourselfmore flexibility in hard toreach places with a pivotinghead ratchet screwdriver.

Remember, you can findthe same quality tools andsupplies online at a fraction

of the cost of your local brickand mortar retailer. Visitwww.Lakeside.com for homeimprovement ideas anddeals.

Easy Exterior UpdatesSet your house apart from

your neighbors by tastefullydecorating your home’s exte-rior with lights, flags or pic-tures. To avoid damage toyour home, use stainless steel

siding clips for vinyl siding orbrick clip hooks on brick wallsand chimneys. These types ofclips only take seconds toinstall, and unlike nails orscrews, don’t create unsightlyholes. Also, you can reposi-tion or remove your decora-tions seasonally or wheneverthe mood strikes.

Quick Interior Updates:You don’t need to have

mastered the art of tiling toredo your kitchen or bath-room walls. Considerinstalling self-adhesive fauxmetal tiles to create a back-splash or decorative border. For example,www.Lakeside.com carriestiles designed to look likebrushed metal with an intri-cate embossed pattern. Youcan easily secure them to flatsurfaces by simply pressinginto place. At $9.95 for a 27-pc set, you can affordably giveyour interiors a completelynew look.

To give a new look to aroom while avoiding a timelyand costly project; considerpainting just one or twoaccent walls. This trick savestime and money and givesyou the chance to select a boldcolor without overwhelming aspace.

You don’t need to spend afortune or hire an outsidecontractor to give the insideand outside of your home amakeover. With the rightknowledge and tools, you canmake the same high-qualityimprovements yourself.

Once-upon-a-time you loved the look of your liv-ing space, but now it feels so last-century. If thissounds like you, consider injecting new energy intoyour home by making a few high-impact changeswithout a high-roller budget.

Clever use of colors in combination with smartlighting can enliven rooms so they give off a morecompelling, modern vibe without the need for costlyremodeling projects or expensive furniture.

Color TransformationsColor both soothes and stirs the senses. Accent

walls are a great way to introduce bold color andcontrast, infusing a room with a sense of adventure, playfulness or drama.

Bring vitality to any room by painting one wall avivid shade to frame a focal point such as a dramat-ic piece of artwork.

Accent walls are usually solid with no doors orwindows, unless there is something special aboutthese features you want to highlight, such as a spec-tacular view or interesting architecture.

If you find yourself intimidated by vibrant colors, use neutral tones on your primary walls with a dark-

er, more intense shade on your accent wall. Popularpaint colors this year include fiery, orange-infusedreds, watery blues, lush greens and earthy neutrals.

Lighting at its BestLighting is one of the most dramatic areas where

things are changing in home décor. Not only are newbulbs such as CFLs and LEDs offering greater ener-gy efficiency, light fixture styles and lamp styles arealso changing.

Remember those recessed lights so popular yearsago? Depending on how they are used today, theymay make a home look outdated. Kichler Lighting’sDirector of Trends and Training, Jeff Dross, suggestsreplacing this older style with contemporary semi-flush fixtures. He also recommends swapping out-dated chandeliers, especially of the old brass variety, with a series of modern pendant lights.

“Nothing makes a tasteful statement of modernsimplicity better than a row of pendant lights over akitchen island or above a dining room table,” Drosssays.

For the bathroom, use wall sconces placed on eachside of the mirror for evenly lighting the face.

“Wall sconces add visual interest to the bath andeven make daily tasks like shaving and make-upapplication easier,” Dross says.

For bedrooms, living rooms and family roomschoose strong bold shapes for your table and floorlamps.

Pillow PowerMatch decorative accessories like pillows and

lamps to your accent wall color, incorporating thecolor -- or shades of it -- into a variety of textures.Framed photos, an interesting vase or impressiveplant will stand out well against an accent wall, making the perfect focal point. A buffet lamp (asmaller version of a table lamp) adds ambience andmakes an ideal accent.

For more information on modern home design, visit www.kichler.com or join Kichler’s experts indiscussing the latest lighting products and trends onTwitter and Facebook.

Giving your home an up-to-date look doesn’t needto break the bank or your back. Simple tweaks cangive your interiors a much-needed face lift.
