Silver Spring Township’s motto is “Suburban Serenity with Urban Proximity.” That motto is apparent through a balance of suburban and urban elements within the township.
“That (motto) sort of summarizes who we are,” said Township Manager Theresa Eberly. She pointed out that the township has Cumberland Valley School District, as well as several parks throughout the town-ship. The township also fea-tures a balance of residential
■ and commercial properties. “I think that makes it a
very welcoming place to live,” she said.
The township is 39 square miles overall in size. It is lo-cated to the east of Carlisle and slightly northwest of Mechanicsburg Bor-ough. Interstate 81 passes through the central portion of the township, while In-terstate 76 passes through the southeast corner. Oth-er major roadways in the township include Route 944, Route 114 and the Carlisle Pike,
Eberly said the township typically does not see traffic congestion unless traffic is diverted from I-81.
“Other times, it’s not re-ally an issue,” she said.
The township approved PennDOT’s adaptive sig-nal plan in March for the Carlisle Pike and its side streets. Eberly said the plan
will use current traffic data and allow the traffic signals to “understand” the traf-fic. Traffic signals will then synchronize to ensure traf-fic flows on the Carlisle Pike and minimize congestion.
The township ensures a balance of urban and sub-urban growth through the farmland preservation pro-gram. Eberly said the pro-gram looks at ensuring there is open space when devel-opments are being built. A separate political action committee, Preserve Silver Spring Township, looks at preserving farmland within the township. The Mary Deitch farm, located at 125 Kost Road, was formally recognized under the Cum-berland County Agricultural Easement Program as a pre-served farm in April.

Carlisle is a short drive away on the Carlisle Pike or I-81. The Capital City Mall is nearby after a short trip on I-81 then south on Route 581.
Silver Spring Township is served by a board of super-visors.

“The interior wall next to the swinging door had a built-in vacuum system that prevented us from using a traditional pocket door,” says Christie Board, kitchen and bath designer. “I had seen wall-mounted doors in magazines and have always loved the idea of incorpo-rating this design into a re-model project.”
One of the challenges of using wall mounted doors was finding the “right” door.

DoorsSince this was a master bathroom, the door needed to fit the clean decor of the bathroom and the master bedroom.
After much searching, Board found a one panel door and took the door to a glass company to have the door fitted with double-sided, full-length mirrors. Finding the right door was like finding a puzzle and putting the right pieces to-gether, says Board. And the result was a simple design solution that looked ideal in both the bathroom and bedroom.
Board chose to use a va-lance for the door tracks on the wall mount hardware because she believed that the cleaner look would fit nicely with the master bed-room.
To handle the double sid-ed mirrored sliding door, Board used 2610F series Wall Mount Sliding Door Hardware. The mirrored door brings a “cool” look-ing design element to each room. The Arizona couple is thrilled that the bathroom door conflict is solved with such a beautiful design.
The 2610F wall mount hardware features a heavy walled-aluminum door track that is precision ex-truded for smooth opera-tion and can hold up to 200 pounds of door weight. The convex rail design provides single-point hanger wheel contact for low “feather touch” roll resistance. And designers and do-it-your-selfers love the box track

Board has used the Wall Mount Hardware a few times since this bathroom design and mentioned that she is getting ready to do this in her own home. However, Board is going to go with the exposed wall mount, rather than the va-lance because she wants a more contemporary look.

The sad truth of handi-ness is that it’s not really about creating nifty new stuff to make life easier.
It’s about fixing what threatens to make your life worse.
The figures — near as I can set them — are 20 per-cent creation vs. 80 percent renovation.
Most of the time what you’ll be doing is scrap-ing paint, replacing rot-ten fence posts, refinishing floors, pointing bricks and repairing leaky faucets.
That’s why when the op-portunity presents itself to
actually make something — a gazebo for the garden, bunk beds for the kids, a coffee table for the living room, new cabinets for the shop — all manner of han-dy joy breaks out.
Through most of the winter — and a spring that just never seemed to want to be at all — I was almost giddy as I played in the workshop with puzzle box and wood carving projects.
My most recent creations were shadow boxes that were destined to be tro-phies for teenage marks-men.

The shadow boxes were great fun, allowing me to mess with my router table and chop saw and several of my smaller clamps.
I even got to mix up some tinted-to-match filler.
The only real challenge — handyfolks love a chal-lenge — was how to make the boxes accessible so the “shadow” stuff could be in-stalled.
Finally, I settled on piec-es of clear acrylic that slip through slots in one side and slide along dadoes routed into the side of the boxes.
I almost didn’t make it on that last bit of wooden legerdemain. I fear my table router, which is very nearly as old as I am, is about to give up the handy game.
I t h a d b e e n g roa n -ing grumpily as it ground through the final cuts and finally froze completely.
I had to shut it down in mid-routing to clean it and lubricate its arbor (yes, I realize that’s “fixing,” not “creating,” but I had no choice), then I had to reset its depth and setback before I could finish the last little batch of box parts.
Sometime before sum-mer I’m going to tackle the basement laundry room, which is the only space in the house that hasn’t been handied in the nine years I’ve lived in the new-new house.
It won’t be a major project — mainly touching up some mortar and painting the walls — but I do want to tear
out the slapped-together shelves under the stairs and build a proper pantry for canned goods and garden produce.
The new shelves won’t be anything fancy — just plywood and maybe 1-by-3 trim to “dress” them up. I mean, they’re storage shelves. How spiffy do they have to be?
Such “creation” projects occupied me for months, but I knew the fun wouldn’t last. The 80 percent rule surely would catch up to me. And it did. Eventually, I had to paint a basement bedroom closet and fix the little retaining wall out back and plant the vegetable gar-den.
In fact, I gotta go now. There’s a rotten fence post calling my name. Sigh.
