• Adolf Hitler: fascist dictator in Nazi Germany

• Benito Mussolini: fascist dictator in Italy

• Communism: economic system where the government controls the means of production

• Dictator: leader of a totalitarian country, usually one person. Similar to a monarch, but does not necessarily pass on leadership to children

• Fascism: political movement that emphasizes loyalty to the state and to the leader

• Joseph Stalin: communist dictator in Russia

• Totalitarian: a government structure in which the leader has total control over the lives of the citizens

What is totalitarianism?

• A government that has total control over its people

• Censors media, limits religion, secret police, and total control over public and private lives of citizens

• Two types: fascist (Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini) and communist (Joseph Stalin)

What is fascism?

• Fascism is a political movement that emphasizes loyalty to the leader and to the state above all

• They can be elected, but usually try to take power away from legislative bodies (such as America’s Congress)

• Extreme form of nationalism

• Denied individual rights

• State was supreme

What is communism?

• Communism is an economic system that emphasizes classless society and government control of the means of production

• Remember that communism is an economic system, not a political one. Joseph Stalin was a totalitarian dictator, and his country happened to be a communist country, which is why communism is mentioned here

Why did totalitarianism emerge?

• During the global depression, many people reduced spending. Many others lost their jobs and homes and became homeless

• It was generally a very fearful time

• Because people were afraid, they looked toward the government to help them, and Hitler and Stalin were able to gain power. People were happy to give up their freedom in exchange for safety and security
