• Allied forces land on the beaches of Normandy, which opens a second front in Europe

• This is the turning point of World War II and eventually leads to Germany’s surrender (known as V-E Day)

The Atomic Bombs

• Manhattan Project: US secretly developed atomic bomb during WWII

• Fat Man and Little Boy (atomic bombs) were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in August 1945

• The destruction led to Japan’s surrender and V-J Day

FUN FACT:

• If the bombs had been detonated on the ground, Japan would glow in the dark

• One man survived both atomic bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima

• Matter weighing the same as a paper clip generated the power of the Hiroshima bomb

• Atomic bomb tests were a major tourist attraction in Las Vegas

• There is a museum on the site of the first atomic bomb testing site, but it is only open 12 hours per year due to radiation
