friends?• Heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Arrives in Serbia

(Sarajevo) for a military tour

• Serbian ethnic groups resent Austria-Hungary for their control of the area. Some want independence for Serbs. Archduke and wife are shot by Gavrilo Princip. After his death, the Austro-Hungarian government tells Serbia that they must take responsibility for the attack

• This aggression toward Serbia causes their ally, Russia, to get ready for war. Serbia and Russia preparing for war caused Austria-Hungary and their ally, Germany, to get ready for war as well

• Militarism is glorifying military power and keeping an army prepared for war

• Kings wore military uniforms even in daily life, and generals became powerful political figures

• Germany and Britain competed to build the largest navy

• Generals develop various plans (the Schlieffen Plan in Germany, for example) that promote quick mobilization of troops in case of war

• After the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, mobilizing Serbia’s ally, Russia. Germany mobilizes and marches through Belgium as part of the Schlieffen Plan. Britain is forced to declare war on Germany

• Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the Triple Alliance (Central Powers)

• Great Britain, France, and Russia formed the Triple Entente(Allied Powers)

• The purpose of these alliances was to preserve the balance of power in Europe

ANS: Imperialism is one country controlling another. Imperialism causes wars because countries compete for resources

• Nationalism is extreme devotion or love for one’s country

• Nationalism can unify a country but it can also create rivalries between other countries

• Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Italy, Great Britain, and France were all rivals by the beginning of the 1900s

• This rivalry came as a result of competition for materials, territorial disputes, and ethnic groups asking for independence

FUN FACT:

• The first would-be assassin threw his bomb at the Archduke’s car. It bounced off the hood and under the car behind them

• The assassin tried to escape by jumping in to the river below and biting a cyanide capsule

• Since it was June, there was no water and the cyanide capsule was not strong enough, so the assassin started vomiting while a crowd following him into the foot deep water and began beating him up
