What is Trench Warfare?

• Trench warfare was a new form of warfare

• Both sides dug ditches to create fortified (strong) positions

• Trenches were separated by area full of barbed wire and mines known as “no man’s land”

• Anyone who climbed out of the trenches faced instant deathfrom enemy machine gun fire

Turn and Talk

If the purpose of war is to gain control of land, why might trench warfare be unsuccessful?

ANS: Because they’re fighting in the ground and as soon as they get up, they’ll be shot

Page 8: Bell Ringer: February (7)8, 2019 - Muse TECHNOLOGIEStjhsworldhistory.weebly.com/uploads/5/4/8/7/54876939/ss8...Bell Ringer: February (7)8, 2019 TOPIC: CHARACTERISTICS OF WORLD WAR

High Casualty Rates

• Because of new weapons (machine guns, poison gas, submarines, airplanes, tanks) and trench warfare, casualty rates for World War I were incredibly high

Turn and Talk

How might the death toll have changed if trench warfare had not been used? Explain the change.

ANS: It could have been lower because trench warfare meant that you were shot as soon as you got up

Suicide in the Trenches

A: Author- who created the source? What do you know about their point of view?

Siegfried Sassoon. He is a soldier, and has first-hand knowledge of life in the trenches.

P: Place and time- where and when was the source produced? How might this affect the meaning of the source?

1917- during the middle of World War I. He may have even written it from a trench.

P: Prior Knowledge- what do you already know that helps you understand the source?

World War I, fought from 1914-1918, total war, trench warfare, high casualty rates, new weapons

L: Listeners or lookers- who is the audience? Who was the primary source created for?

The audience is the “smug-faced crowds,” or the people who have not had to fight in the war

E: Effect- why is this source important? How does it change history? Ask yourself, “So what?”

Sassoon is attempting to show that war is an awful thing, and that it changes people, taking their happiness and should be avoided

Independent Practice: PreAP

• Get out your copy of the “Safe/Blank” paper

• Rip it into four pieces. On the “safe” sheet, do not write anything. On the blank sheet, write one of the dangers that soldiers faced while in the trenches and then crumble it into a ball:

• Bitten by rats

• Arm/leg/foot/hand blown off

• Machine gun fire

• Tank fire

• Poison gas canister

• Trench foot

• You will begin writing a letter to someone back home (boyfriend, girlfriend, parents, sibling) on a blank sheet of paper. When the machine gun fire starts, begin throwing your “bullets” across the room

• When the machine gun fire ends, pick up the closest “bullet” and incorporate it into your story

• DUE AT THE END OF CLASS: COMPLETED ANALYSIS
