Last Day Term 2
ISSUE #11 1 May 2020
Dear Parents and Community Members, Welcome back to the beginning of a new term, whether that be currently in a home learning environment or at school. The start to this term, all things considered, has been quite a smooth one! Let me firstly thank the Dalmain School Community for your ongoing support and patience across what has been a particularly trying period of six weeks or so. Remaining flexible, calm and resilient during this time has been key with the goal of protecting all within our local and broader communities. The fact that we find ourselves currently in a position where schools are once again open to all students with parents being able to choose whether or not their children attend school is extraordinary. Let us hope that this quick turn around with Covid-19 remains positive and the broader community is able to slowly return to more normal routines. I would also like to acknowledge the considerable work, goodwill, flexibility and collegiality of the entire Dalmain staff through this time – cleaners, education assistants, teachers, gardeners, school officers and administrators have all done their part and more. As you can imagine, there has been a great deal for staff to contemplate with the constantly changing rules and expectations, along with the potential risks involved in managing and working in such circumstances. I am proud to say that our staff, as a whole, have met the various challenges presented and excelled in their response. This week we have gradually seen increasing numbers of students returning to school with approximately 75% attending today. Students who are continuing to learn at home will be provided with learning tasks through Seesaw Class or hardcopy work packages. Teachers will remain in close contact with all students and endeavour to ensure that all are catered for during these uncertain times. The return to school this week has been unusual in that parents are not able to access the school site when dropping-off and picking-up their children due to the Covid-19 restrictions currently in place. While this has been far from ideal, again with the cooperation of our school community, it has occurred with minimal fuss. This has ensured that our students have been able to happily start their school day and adjust to these expectations and conditions.
There has been a strong emphasis on personal hygiene with students regularly reminded to wash their hands throughout the day and abiding by the changes required. Additional cleaning of classrooms, equipment and playgrounds during the course of the school day is occurring in a further effort to minimise the health risks involved. Importantly those students who have attended school this week have enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with their friends and classmates which I am sure is a significant mental health benefit. Over the next week or so there will be further announcements regarding the future direction of schooling made by the Government and Department of Education. These, I am sure, will be closely aligned to what happens with regard to the community spread of Covid-19. I am loath to predict just what that may be, but certainly hope that the continuing pattern of low transmission remains and we are all able to move forward with increasing confidence. Once again if you would like to discuss anything at all, please feel free to contact me through the school office or via email.

Dalmain Chess Club 2020 Suspended until further notice
Unfortunately, due to the unprecedented times we are currently living in, the Dalmain Chess Club will be suspended until further notice.
I would encourage parents/carers of students wanting to join the chess club to take the time to sit and have a friendly game with their child to help strengthen their skills and strategies or else students can go to www.chess.com where they can learn strategies as well as play against the computer.

On the 25th of April 2020 I commemorated the ANZAC spirit by having 1 minutes silence having
put red and purple poppies in the lawn to remember the men, women and animals who
fought in the war.
I listened to the National Anthems of Australia and New Zealand. I also just stood silent for like five minutes. I went and ate ANZAC biscuits after
the outside ceremony. Lest we forget.
~ Kaiden
This year on ANZAC Day my dad woke me up at 5:38am and we watched the news. We stood on the end of the driveway with a radio listening to the last post. Also we lit 2 candles. The day after
ANZAC we made ANZAC cookies (they were burnt). We dipped them in with milk. Lest we
forget.
~ Kiara
This year was a bit different when we had ANZAC Day because of Covid-19. Mum made ANZAC cookies and we made a candle holder out of a milk bottle, made a few poppies out of an egg
carton and we stood out the front. Lest we forget.
~ Ryan
ANZAC Day is a day on the 25th of April annually to remember the people who fought in the war,
but this year it was different!
Because of the Coronavirus, my family (and I’m sure lots of other families) stood outside on their
driveways holding a candle.
My mum has the radio FM app so we listened to it on that. My brother, Koby was too little to hold a candle so he held a battery operated one! Lest
we forget.
~ Jake
This year ANZAC Day was very different. I made ANZAC cookies. My family and I had a minute of
silence. Lots of people held poppies and rosemary, also candles on their driveway.
I ate lots of ANZAC cookies. Some people usually go to the dawn service but you couldn’t go this
year. Lest we forget.
~ Lucy
