Over the past few months Enter students have been hard at work interviewing and socialising with people over the age of 60 to gain an understanding of what life used to be like in our com- munities in the 1930s and 40s. The research and stories they have collected have been turned into an original radio play script, which will be performed by Enter upper school students on the 20th April as part of the ‘Puttin on the Blitz’ experience. LettersHave your say...

    Dear Editor,

In reply to Mr Foster’s letter, Issue 615, he suggests this matter regard-ing the Dalkia Plant monies is now “clear”.

After receiving a letter from Chilton Town Council personally stating no further comment on the Social Enterprise Group could be made for at least two months, and considering yet again no actual date for the transfer of these monies has been given, I would not consider anything to be clear at all.

Surely if all that is holding up this transfer is paperwork and, consider-ing DCC has had since November 2012 to get this paperwork in order, then surely this should not be an issue that should continue indefinately, as it would appear that the timescale being offered is...sometime.

Given DCC has already spent £7,000 of this money and has happily received the interest from this money as well, I fear their unwillingness to actually provide the residents with a clearer timescale lends more to their financial gain than ensuring legalities are met. To say they are protecting these funds whilst happily spending them and collecting the interest before residents see any benefit is an oxymoron.

Would Mr Foster and all concerned be willing to enter into a public forum where residents can actually get answers, rather than being dismissed by all concerned in such a manner as befits Mr Foster’s letter in Issue 615, where the lies promoted by CTC, DCC and Dalkia, that enabled this project to be passed without any significant resident in-volvement and the obvious lack of commitment by all concerned, to transfer these funds to the residents of Chilton, can be addressed by the residents?

Regards, Davey Chapman, Byron Road, Chilton

Woodham Sports Academy is about to offer elite coaching in a new sport, water polo. Students are already able to enjoy professional coaching in football, gymnastics, dance, cricket, basketball, table tennis, softball, American Football and swimming. The idea came from Woodham Academy’s student Governor, Richie Howe. Richie, who lives in Chilton, is a keen water polo player with Sedgefield Water Polo Club and was keen for his classmates to be able to use Woodham’s pool for training. His

coach, George Carpen-ter, will be providing the training.George has been involved with water polo in the region for over 40 years. He played for the Great British men’s team in 1984 and 1985, becoming the first player ever to score over 100 goals in a season. George founded Sedgefield Water Polo Club in 1997. His teams have won many awards, including four National Junior titles.Woodham Academy has a long history of produc-ing successful water polo players. Pictured with

Richie is former Woodham student, Angela Winstan-ley-Smith, who played for Team Great Britain in Women’s Water Polo at the London Olympics. Richie was given the honour of carrying the Olympic torch in recognition of his charity work for Diabetes UK.Woodham Chair of Gover-nors, Christine Robinson, said, “We listen carefully to what our students want. Governors are delighted that Woodham Sports Academy is able to give students the chance to ex-perience such an exciting sport.”

The recent Easter Fair held by 1st Ferryhill Scout Group raised a fantastic £400.A spokesperson for the group said, “This is a fan-tastic result, especially in these difficult financial times, and will greatly help our efforts to continue pro-viding Scouting activities in Ferryhill. “Thanks are extended to all involved; those who came along and supported the event, Tool-Time, J.T. Atkinson, Broom Mill Spa

and Party Poppers (Bishop Middleham), as well as the many individuals who kindly donated items for the raffle and various stalls, the volunteers for their time in running the stalls and providing re-freshments, those who sold and bought raffle tickets, and of course the fundrais-ing group for organising the event. “We greatly appreci-ate everyone’s time and efforts.”

She then moved onto Darchem Engineering in Stillington for the next 25 years, where she was an inspector for Rolls Royce. The lovely couple have one daughter, Amanda, who lives in Ferryhill. They have two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They have enjoyed dancing all their married life and actually met at Chilton

WMC dance when Bill was 16 and Bett 15. Bill is a football fanatic, who was a Sunderland season ticket holder for 15 years. In earlier times they went to the theatre, and loved the big band shows, as Bill is very keen on jazz. They both liked their garden, and Bett used to like sewing when she was younger. They celebrated their special occasion with a party for 150 family and friends at Chilton WMC.

    Ferryhill stabbing man avoids prison

A former soldier who carried a pen-knife “for protec-tion” avoided jail when he pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding after a man was knifed in the street in front of horrified shoppers on a busy market day in Ferryhill.William Edward Wetherell stabbed the victim six times, puncturing his lung, after being convinced the

younger man was involved in an assault.Wetherall claimed to have witnessed a violent dispute in which a 57 year-old was apparently chased by two younger men. Intervening, he caught one of the men in an alleyway next to the Post House pub and inflicted several stab wounds.Wetherall, 65, of Church

Lane in the town, denied wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but admitted the lesser offence. Judge Brian Forster imposed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, during which Wetherall, who expressed his relief at avoiding prison, will be subject to a probation order.
