Leading Western Australian owner-

breeder Bob Peters has made the

difficult decision to sell three-time

Group 1 winner Arcadia Queen

(Pierro) at the upcoming Magic Millions

National Broodmare Sale, joining champion

New Zealander Melody Belle (Commands) at

this month’s Gold Coast auction.

Yesterday’s confirmation that Arcadia

Queen would be a supplementary entry for the

National Sale comes just days after Peters sold

another of his top race mares, this season’s

Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Celebrity

Queen (Redoute’s Choice), for $2.5 million at

last Friday’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale in Sydney.

Magic Millions managing director Barry

Bowditch reached out to Peters about five weeks

ago, floating the prospect of offering Arcadia

Queen on the Gold Coast, and the prominent

industry figure gave the go-ahead yesterday,

despite strong pressure from influences close

to him.

“It hasn’t been easy, mainly because

of family pressure, and I have just been making up my mind. I wasn’t sure

what I was going to do until today, virtually,” Peters told ANZ Bloodstock

News.

“The main reason is, I have a lot of that blood anyway and obviously

the value is in the Group 1-winning mares, so the other ones coming along

are yet to prove they are up to that standard of what Arcadia Queen is.”

Arcadia Queen, the latest addition to a star-studded catalogue,

is tipped to heighten attention on the Gold Coast sale from high-end

breeders from around the world.

It would be not unreasonable to expect that Coolmore, who bought

Peters’ mare Celebrity Queen at the Chairman’s Sale, would be closely

considering the rising six-year-old mare to add to its band of high-class

mares, while Japanese breeders have also been buying elite Australian

mares off the track in recent years.

Yulong’s Yuesheng Zhang, who paid $2.2 million for In Her Time

(Time Thief) at the Chairman’s Sale, bought prized Group 1-winning

mares Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock) ($2.75 million) and Viddora (I Am

Invincible) ($2.55 million) at last year’s Magic Millions auction, could also

be another major player interested in securing Arcadia Queen.

US and European breeders - 2019 Magic Millions sale-topper

Missrock (Fastnet Rock) was bought by UK agents John and Jake Warren

for $2.3 million - would also likely be doing their due diligence on mares

of Melody Belle’s and Arcadia Queen’s quality.

The prized pair could threaten last year’s $4.2 million price tag

achieved for Sunlight (Zoustar), but Bowditch would not speculate on a

final number for either of the banner mares.

“Like Melody Belle, really, how do you put a number on these

outstanding race fillies who have got pedigrees who are quality types?”

Bowditch said.

“They are rarities in the market and they are here for the global market’s

competition and we’re honoured to be entrusted to sell Arcadia Queen.”

Arcadia Queen, who retires with a record of eight wins from 16 starts

and prize-money of almost $4 million, won five of her first six starts in

Perth, all in one preparation, but it was her last run of that 2018 spring

and summer campaign which made eastern state pundits stand up and

take notice, as she dominated the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m),

winning by four and a half lengths.

“She was very good right

from the start, but I think

winning the Kingston Town

(made the rest of Australia

take notice), as three-year-old

fillies don’t often beat the older

horses at weight for age at that

time of the year, and she didn’t

just beat them, she thrashed

them when you look at the

replay of that race,” Peters

recalled of the “imposing

mare” yesterday.

“She had world-class sectionals from that race. The world handicappers

were in Hong Kong and they all watched that race on that day.”

Peters sent Arcadia Queen to be trained in Sydney by Chris Waller on

her return as a four-year-old, a season in which the mare won the Theo

Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) first-up before competing in The Everest

(1200m) and the Golden Eagle (1500m) where she ran fifth.

Plagued by feet issues throughout her career, Arcadia Queen was back

in the care of her original trainers Grant and Alana Williams following

her stint in Sydney, and last spring produced dominant performances

to win the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1,

2000m) intersected by an eye-catching performance in the Cox Plate (Gr

1, 2040m) when finishing fifth.

“When you look at the races that she was unlucky in - the Golden

Eagle, she was knocked down in that, got up and still ran home to run fifth

- and the same thing happened to her in the Cox Plate,” he said.

“She could have been a bigger earner than what she is.”

Arcadia Queen’s feet issues again took their toll after her first-up

second in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), ruling her out of the All-Star

Mile (1600m) in March, and time was subsequently called on the mare’s

racing career.

She hails from Peters’ potent Antique (Metal Storm) family, being a

granddaughter of the stakes-performed mare and a daughter of Arcadia

(Redoute’s Choice), making her a sibling to six winners including Arcadia

Prince (Pierro), Arcadia Dream (Domesday) and Arcadia Rose (Kheleyf),

all themselves stakes winners.

Peters retains ownership of unraced fillies Arcadia Princess

(Domesday), a three-year-old who is in foal to Ocean Park (Thorn Park),

two-year-old Arcadia Gem (Domesday) and yearling Arcadia Star (Pierro)

out of Arcadia.

Arcadia Queen’s pedigree also boasts the likes of stakes winners Antique

Belle (Redoute’s Choice) and Broadway Belle (Redoute’s Choice), who has

produced All-Star Mile and Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Regal Power

(Pierro) and Group 2 winner Action (Pierro).

“The time and investment that Bob and

Sandra Peters have put into building these families and raising these horses

into the athletes that they are, it’s impossible to value,” Bowditch said.

“There’s a lot of fantastic fillies in Arcadia Queen’s family and obviously

she’s the Queen of it, pardon the pun.

“Her versatility was probably one of her greatest strengths. She was

quite an unlucky mare late in her career, but to be able to win at a sprint

level and then be able to win a Group 1 at three, train on and compete with

the best horses and defeat them in the east; she’s done it all.”

While Celebrity Queen has been sold and Arcadia Queen will soon

join her, Peters won’t be selling any other members of the family any time

soon.

“We don’t sell very much out of this family and there’s quite a lot of

females in it,” he said.

“The old mare Antique had eight fillies in a row. There’s a lot of females

coming through.”

Peters’ belief in Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Pierro

(Lonhro) as a stallion prospect led him to supporting the Coolmore sire

from his first season, a decision which has paid off handsomely.

Broadway Belle, Antique Belle and the stakes-placed Antique Dream

(Redoute’s Choice) are all booked in to be covered by Pierro next season.

“I watched his racing performance and winning a triple crown

as a two-year-old, not many have been able to do that, and I liked his

pedigree on the dam’s side,” said Peters, recently deemed to be fifth on the

Thoroughbred Racing Commentary’s global owner rankings.

“I never had any doubt that he would make a good stallion.”

Arcadia Queen will be auctioned as a supplementary lot after the race

fillies and mares session, but before the Shadwell Dispersal takes place on

Tuesday, May 25, which promises to be the biggest single day’s trade in the

southern hemisphere.

Bowditch said: “It is probably the most highly anticipated day this part

of the world’s breeding industry has seen, having an outstanding group

of race fillies going through and bolstered by the likes of Arcadia Queen

and obviously the Shadwell Dispersal, which will see out the day in great

fashion.”

While Magic Millions has some major broodmare drawcards,

Bowditch was careful not to overlook the fact that the company will

auction more than 700 mares over three days later this month.

“Our job as a sales company is to put the best catalogue we can

together and, secondly, ensure that we’ve got buyers at all levels,” he said.

“It’s not just about the key mares in the catalogue … and over the past

month and leading into the sale in the next ten days that’s our mandate

and that’s what we need to do.”

The Magic Millions National Sale starts with a two-day weanling

auction on May 20 and 21 followed by the broodmare sale the following

week. The National Yearling Sale will be conducted from June 1 to 3.

Four for Divine Prophet

Little Prophet (2 f Little 'n' Cute ex Lujain) got off

the mark at her third attempt when landing the

1100-metre 2YO Handicap at Murwillumbah

yesterday, providing first season sire Divine

Prophet (Choisir) with his fourth individual

winner. Sent off a $2.10 chance after finishing

fourth at Grafton last month, the Colt Prosser-

trained filly ran on well down the outside to

defeat Fresh Prince (Starspangledbanner) by

a long neck, with In'hinchable (Hinchinbrook)

two lengths behind the winner in third.

Purchased by Prosser for $20,000 from last

year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Little Prophet

is the sixth winner from nine to race out of

Little ‘n’ Cute (Lujain). Caulfield Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m) winner Divine Prophet will stand at

Aquis Farm for a fee of $16,500 (inc. GST) in

2021, down from $22,000 last year.

Brandenburg ready for Queensland assignmentsJohn Sargent’s star gelding Brandenburg

(Burgundy) is back in form after winning the

inaugural running of The Coast at Gosford

on Saturday. The four-year-old hadn't won

since he claimed the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2,

1400m) in 2019, yet showed his class, winning

the $500,000 feature by half a length. "It was

good to see him back after a couple of unlucky

runs this time in," said Sargent. "I was on the

ballot there (for the Hollindale Stakes) so I

thought 'I can't afford to go up there and not

have a run because then it's a month into the

Doomben Cup' so it worked out perfectly. I

know what he can do so it was good to see him

get back to that and onwards and upwards.”

Queensland now awaits the four-year-old,

with the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) one

of his main targets. "He'll need that A-game

to come up to Queensland because it's going

to be a lot stronger up there. The Coast win

just shows you that he'll be getting back to

the form that he was when he was running in

the Doncaster. He'll head up there Wednesday

week, and then run in that (the Doomben Cup)

and three weeks later he'll run in the Q22. Then

he'll spell probably just three weeks and then

get ready for Melbourne he'll be aiming for in

the spring."

Maher ponders Queensland Derby for JackCiaron Maher and David Eustace continue

to ponder whether or not to send South

Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner

Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry) to Eagle Farm

for the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) on

May 29. “The timing is perfect with the gap in

between runs, he’s been up to Sydney so he’s

familiar with that and then obviously would

go up to Queensland,” Maher told Racing.

com. “He is a heavy horse, he has been in

work quite a while so I’ll just be very critical

on him. Given the way he pulled on Saturday

he seems pretty straightforward. There’s

obviously some big spring carrots as well.

Looking at him, up to two miles wouldn’t

worry him so we have to think about that as

well. I’m not one for sending a colt like him

to the paddock in winter and trying to have

him at his peak in spring. Whether he went up

there anyway and wintered up there, might

be something we’d do anyway.”

Gytrash on song for GoodwoodAdelaide trainer Gordon Richards is hoping

Gytrash (Lope de Vega) can improve on last

year’s second placing when he returns in The

Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville.

Richards is confident the sprinter can acquit

himself well when he runs first-up in the

race. Gytrash is returning from an operation

to remove a bone chip following victory at

Rosehill last October. Gytrash will round

off his preparation with a jump-out on the

middle grass at Morphettville this morning. "I

only intended to give him a small preparation

rather than go through the motions of 12

months without a run," said Richards. "But

he's moving along beautifully, so we've

decided to run in the Goodwood, rather than

a trial, put him in a race and try and win some

prize-money. While not properly screwed

down for it, he's pretty right and he goes well

fresh, so he'll run and then go for a break and

head towards The Everest again. He's a very

clean-winded horse and he came out of the

spelling paddock like he could have raced the

next week, he looked that good. Hopefully

the track is not too heavy. Soft will be good.”

Jason Collett, who rode Gytrash to victories

in Sydney last spring and when third in The

Everest, will travel to Adelaide to partner him

on Saturday.

Ramsden target for Through Irish EyesFresh from saddling the first two runners

home in the South Australian Derby (Gr

1, 2500m) last weekend, Ciaron Maher

and David Eustace have nominated

seven horses for the Andrew Ramsen

Stakes (Listed, 2800m) on Saturday,

including three-year-old Through Irish

Eyes (Tavistock). New Zealand-bred pair

Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry) and Let's

Karaka Deel (Dundeel) proved a class

above their rivals in their one-two Derby

finish and Through Irish Eyes will bid to

continue the staying stable form, with the

Andrew Ramsden winner landing an all-

important Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)

ballot exemption. “The reason for running

in the Ramsden is the 2800 metres at

Flemington really suits that horse,” Maher

told RSN. “He's a bit like Let's Karaka Deel

but bigger, he’s still got to furnish and he’s

a real genuine stayer so 2800 metres is

much more to his liking than 2400 metres.”

The last-start winner of the VRC St Leger

(Listed, 2800m), Through Irish Eyes cruised

past his rivals but was still green over the

concluding stages. “Obviously having that

experience at Flemington already holds

him in good stead, so we'll have this week’s

target and then will work out his plan after

that,” Maher said.

Thompson targets black type for FuryGlen Thompson will bid to gain Avion Fury

(More Than Ready) some black type in the

near future after he notched his third career

victory in the 2100-metre Benchmark 78

contest at Gosford on Saturday. "It was a great

result. He seems to appreciate the soft going,"

Thompson said. "Gosford's a short straight

and for a horse that gets back it was a little

bit of a concern, but it was a ten-out-of-ten

ride from Kerrin [McEvoy]. He got him going

at the right time and got the result. He'd been

racing well and deserved to finally get another

win." Earlier in the autumn Avion Fury ran

unplaced in two Group 3 contests and, after

his win on Saturday, the Warwick Farm-

based trainer said the four-year-old could

return to stakes company. "He definitely has

the ability, his runs in those races were good,

where he just got too far out of his ground

and was giving them too much head start," he

said. "You can see the difference on Saturday

when he can be a bit closer, it's obviously a

big advantage.”

Team Corstens preparing for Queensland assaultMalua Racing will take a team to Queensland

for what it hopes will be a successful raid

on the Brisbane Winter Carnival, but the

horses will first need to earn their spot. After

finishing third, in the Tobin Bronze (Gr 2,

1200m) at Morphettville on May 1, Ranting

(Zoustar) was nominated for The Goodwood

(1200m) this Saturday, but will instead

head to Flemington to prove his worth for

Brisbane. "He'll get a bit of weight, but we'll

probably claim there and if he runs really well

over the 1400 metres then we'll look to take

him up to Queensland," said Troy Corstens,

who trains in partnership with his father

Leon. "I still think he's a very good horse

and that he's got a Group 1 in him.” Ranting

is nominated for the Stradbroke Handicap

(Gr 1, 1400m), as are Group 3 placegetter

Morrissy (Snitzel) and progressive gelding

The Astrologist (Zoustar). The latter, whose

two most recent runs were on the Gold Coast

in January, is already in the Sunshine State

with an exact plan of attack still yet to be

determined, but potentially a treble of Group

1s is on the agenda, including the Doomben

10,000 (1200m) on Saturday. "We'll just see

what race we run him in next week. We've got

him in a Class 6 as well, he's going to get a

bit of weight in that, but I'll have a good chat

with Nathan Bennett (managing owner) and

then we'll decide which race we run him in."

Three-year-old filly Succeed Indeed (Akeed

Mofeed) is the last of the Corstens quartet set

to race up north, aimed at the Queensland

Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m).

Moloney looks to the futureAfter arriving from Epsom 20 years ago, John

Moloney and brother Gerard are preparing

to close the stable doors at Caulfield by the

end of this year. With the upcoming closure of

training at the Heath, Moloney has landed on

Cranbourne as the future home for Moloney

Racing. "We're prepared, we are mentally

ready for it," said Moloney of the change.

"We didn't want to leave Caulfield naturally,

but that's going to happen sometime later

in the year I'd imagine, probably before the

end of the year comes around we'll be out

of Caulfield.” Moloney recalled his family's

history, not only at Caulfield but the Epsom

Training Centre, which they relocated from in

the late 1990s. "Dad had a great run of horses,

certainly out of Epsom, winning Derbies and

Oaks and of course a Sydney Cup, so we had

a great dynasty out of Epsom. And we've had

a bit of a run out of Caulfield, naturally we've

been here about 20 years. "We came with

other trainers from Epsom, including Ross

McDonald and Rick Hore-Lacey and several

other good trainers that had to come up here.

They did very well with the likes of Redoute's

Choice, Weekend Hussler and many good

horses. It's been good to us." Moloney, who

shares stables with his brother Gerard, said

it would be with a heavy heart the training

fraternity at Caulfield would be no more.

Maid set for confidence boostTrainer Mitch Freedman is likely to bypass

Saturday's Andrew Ramsden Stakes and opt

for a confidence-booster for his star mare

Moonlight Maid (Puissance de Lune). The

talented four-year-old returned to form last

start, finishing third in the Warrnambool

Cup (Listed, 2350m). While she has been

competitive in Group 1 and Group 2 races,

Moonlight Maid hasn't won since October

2019 and Freedman is keen to get her back

into the winner's stall soon. "We would like

to get her back in the winner's circle. It was

a good effort in the Warrnambool Cup," said

Freedman. "There's a race for her Saturday

week, a (Benchmark) 84, 2500 metres, we

would be looking to run her in and try to

retain Will Price on her. She's been in good-

quality races. She has been running up to

her best but not quite been good enough. If

we can bring her back a peg or two and try

and pick up some races then that would be

beneficial to me and the owners."

Amade to stay in workThe 2021 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) will

get its first confirmed runner this Saturday

at Flemington, but the locally-based horse

touted to have the best chance of challenging

for the November race will not be at

headquarters and will be at home instead.

The seven-year-old Amade (Casamento)

will be restricted to some light work this

week while the younger local stayers vie

for a ballot-free Melbourne Cup spot in

the Andrew Ramsden. His trainer, Phillip

Stokes, said Amade will be kept in work all

winter as he builds up to the Melbourne Cup,

where he has been installed as third favourite

off the back of his dominant last-start win at

Flemington. Seven-year-old Amade cannot

run in the Ramsden as it is a race confined

to three-, four- and five-year-olds. "He'll be

kept in light work as he's in a good space and

we've got a nice uphill training track at the

farm and he can just enjoy life in a paddock,

which he hasn't had for a long time. He's

an exciting horse who we'd love to get to a

Melbourne Cup." Stokes is in a purple patch

with 13 winners from his past 37 runners.

Among his runners on Saturday is flying filly

Instant Celebrity (Not A Single Doubt) who is

aiming to make it back-to-back Group 1s in

The Goodwood. "We've got Jamie Kah to ride

her on Saturday and we're really pleased with

where she is. She's going great and while this

is going to be tougher, good fillies run well in

this race and I think she will too." His highest-

rated horse, Mr Quickie (Shamus Award), will

not run until the Stradbroke Handicap at

Eagle Farm on June 12.

‘Start of something big’ for Rebel Dane The thoroughbred breeding industry lends

itself to some remarkable stories of success

and of failure, but few can match the

current narrative around Kilmore-based

stallion Rebel Dane (California Dane). Just

a few days ago, his story was seemingly

destined to be one of failure as, after four

seasons at stud, Rebel Dane has had just

two horses race and only 12 of his progeny

have been named. In the 2019 season, he

had just seven live foals. But in the space

of one minute and 11 seconds on the Gold

Coast on Saturday, his likely failure has

quickly been transformed into stunning

success following the victory of his son

Subterranean in the Ken Russell Memorial

(Gr 3, 1200m) for trainer Matthew Dunn. It

was just the stallion's second stakes runner

and so he has a stakes race strike-rate of 50

per cent. Glen Eden Stud near Kilmore has

stood Rebel Dane for the past two seasons

after the dual Group 1-winning sprinter

originally began his post-racing career at

Swettenham Stud. "I love him and maybe

this is the sort of kick-along he needs," said

Glen Eden's manager Sonia O'Gorman.

Rebel Dane's fee rose from $5,000 to $8,800

for the upcoming season due mainly to

reports from trainers of the talent being

shown by some of his unraced progeny. "We

set the new price prior to Saturday as we

thought something like this would happen."

Kah chases ‘special’ goalLeading jockey Jamie Kah is eyeing a history

making end to the season and has more than

enough time to do it. Kah extended her lead

in the Victorian metro premiership to 31 on

Damian Lane with a five-timer at Caulfield on

Saturday giving her a huge advantage with 21

flat meetings remaining. If she can maintain

her lead, she will become the first female

to claim the Victorian metro premiership,

but she has also revealed she is aiming to

become the first jockey in the state to ride

100 city winners for the season. Champion

Brett Prebble has come closest with 99.5

wins in a season, but with 86 winners to her

name already, the century is well and truly

on the cards for Kah. However, she will miss a

number of upcoming city meetings to ride in

South Australia and Queensland's Carnivals.

"We tried to get as many wins here as we can

before the big carnivals come up. Obviously,

I'm a fair bit in front now, but I would

really like to get that 100 city metro wins in

Victoria," said Kah. "Obviously there's not as

many midweek meetings at the moment, so

it's going to be tricky. But we are not going to

not go interstate for good chances.” Kah is set to

continue to ride Stradbroke Handicap-bound

rising star Ayrton (Iffraaj) but may face a weight

issue. The talented three-year-old is likely to

carry a light weight if he makes the field, with

Kah comfortably riding at 52 kilograms.

Salisbury and Subzero to be honoured at Hall of FameMelbourne Cup winner, “the people’s horse”

Subzero (Kala Dancer), and his best friend

and owner Graham Salisbury, will both

be posthumously honoured at this year’s

Australian Racing Hall of Fame ceremony with

the rare presentation of The Spirit of Racing

Award. The Australian Racing Hall of Fame

has previously honoured racing participants

with the presentation of a Chairman’s Award,

however this will mark the first time that two

individuals have been honoured with the

newly created The Spirit of Racing Award.

Graham and Subzero had an indelible impact

on the immediate racing community but

also the broader general public. Following

his stint as clerk of the course, Graham and

Subzero, or “Subbie” as he was affectionately

known, took on a role as ambassadors for

Racing Victoria, in conjunction with the

Australian Racing Museum. The inseparable

duo visited schools, nursing homes, hospices

and regularly attending events such as

celebrations for the horse’s birthday. The

passing of the two friends last year was

followed by an enormous outpouring of grief

as the industry mourned the loss of two of

its most loved and greatest contributors.

Representing the two on the night will be

Graham’s son Tony.

Apache Cat responds well to treatmentEight-time Group 1 winner Apache Cat

(Lion Cavern) has successfully undergone

treatment for his eye cancer and was given

the all clear after his follow-up visit from

eye specialist Dr Andrew Turner. “We are

very happy to report that Apache Cat has

responded well to the treatment for his eye

cancer,” Living Legends posted on social

media. “We will be watching him carefully

at Living Legends with another visit for

a further checkup by Andrew Turner in 4

months. Thank you all for your well wishes

and support.”

Enzo’s Lad retiredDual Group 1 winner Enzo’s Lad (Testa Rossa)

has been retired after trailing the field home in the

Great Easter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Riccarton

on Saturday. The Michael and Matthew Pitman-

trained eight-year-old retires sound after a career

which spans 50 starts and six seasons, with a

record of eight victories and 13 minor placings.

Enzo’s Lad won The Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m)

on two occasions and finished runner-up to

Avantage (Fastnet Rock) last year. Michael Pitman

credits Enzo’s Lad with providing him with the

motivation to overcome life-threatening bowel

cancer. “He is the reason I got through my cancer

as well as I did. I know that because I had a huge

incentive to keep going,” Pitman said. “He retires

100 per cent sound and he will go to a former staff

member and she is going to take him on a farm

in North Canterbury. It’s a forever home and part of

the deal is that if he needs to move for any reason,

he comes back to us as he has been part of the

furniture.”

Allpress to return Saturday weekLeading jockey Lisa Allpress is set to return to action

at Awapuni next Saturday after suffering a head

knock having been dislodged from Castani (Per

Incanto) in the barriers at Woodville on Sunday.

She was subsequently transported to hospital and

New Zealand Jockeys’ Association executive officer,

Andrew Lacy, said: “She said she is feeling great and

is going to the doctor’s today (Monday). She will

likely be riding back at Awapuni next Saturday.” On

a weekend which saw several injuries to jockeys,

Kozzi Asano will face an uphill battle to retain his

national apprentice jockey’s premiership title after

falling from Jackaroo (Jakkalberry) at Woodville. “He

has a broken collarbone and will be out for four to six

weeks,” Lacy said. On Saturday, jockeys Johnathan

Parkes and Masa Hashizume were also involved in

a race fall at Te Rapa. Hashizume’s mount Marroni

(Makfi) blundered and fell passing the 350-metre

mark and Parkes’ mount Cutting Up Rough (Per

Incanto) was brought down by the faller. “Johnathan

Parkes has also broken his collarbone and he will

be out for at least six weeks,” Lacy said. “I spoke

with Noel Harris (riding mentor) and Masa just has

bruising and he could be back riding next week.”

HK: Borges receives nine-meeting banVagner Borges has been banned for nine meetings

following his ride on Daily Charm (Not A Single

Doubt) in the Somerset Handicap (1800m) at

Sha Tin on April 17. Stewards continued their

inquiry into the ride yesterday and charged

Borges with breaching Hong Kong Rule of Racing

99(2) and (6). Borges pleaded guilty and Stewards

suspended him from Monday, May 24 to Sunday,

June 27, on which day he can resume riding.

There are nine meetings scheduled in Hong Kong

for this period.

HK: Triple Crown on the cards for Sixty Golden Sixty (Medaglia D'Oro) is one of nine entries

for the Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)

at Sha Tin on May 23, the final leg of Hong Kong’s

Triple Crown series. River Verdon (Be My Native)

in 1994 remains Hong Kong’s only winner of the

trio of races; the Hong Kong Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1,

1600m), Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and

Champions & Chater Cup. Golden Sixty will be

aiming to extend his 14-race unbeaten run and

will face the likes of last year’s winner Exultant

(Teofilo), Queen Mother Memorial Cup (Gr 3,

2400m) winner Butterfield (Septembro Chove)

and Royal Ascot winner Russian Emperor (Galileo).

SGP: Don’t Tell Tilly tests positive for RanitidinePresence of Ranitidine was found in the John

O'Hara-trained Don’t Tell Tilly (Testa Rossa)

following urine and blood samples being collected

post-race on April 18, when Don’t Telly Tilly finished

runner-up in 1200-metre maiden. O’Hara was

advised of the report on Friday and cannot race

Don’t Telly Tilly again until she is cleared by the

stewards. An inquiry into the findings will be held at

a date to be determined.

SGP: $5,000 fine for PetersTrainer James Peters has received a S$5,000

(approx. AU$4,800) fine following a complaint

lodged by Michael Chang, assistant handicapper of

the Singapore Turf Club, regarding Peters’ conduct

towards him between July 2020 and April 2021.

The stewards held an inquiry into the matter last

Tuesday and found Peters guilty of misconduct

on numerous occasions via telephone calls and

whatsapp messages, where he was found to be

confronting and intimidating towards Chang.

UK: Racegoers to return to tracks next weekRacegoers in England are set to be able to return

to most racecourses from next Monday after the

UK government confirmed that step three of its

roadmap out of lockdown will go ahead as planned.

In a televised address on Monday, prime minister

Boris Johnson announced that the next stage of

the government's plan will commence in a week's

time. It is expected the BHA will now be able to give

the green light for racecourses to accept up to 4,000

spectators or 50 per cent of an individual venue's

capacity, whichever number is lower.

LLOYD JACKSON | @ANZ_NEWS

In a notable training effort by Fraser

Auret, the winner’s share of Riccarton’s

two Listed races run last Saturday went

to the family training operation in north-

western Manawatu-Wanganui - and both are

closely related.

On debut, Unusual Countess (Unusual

Suspect) gamely held out a strong late challenge

to bag the Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m),

by a short head.

Showing similar grit two races later, Streak

Of Power (Power), a close relative of Unusual

Countess, added career win number five (and

four in his last five starts) in the Great Easter

Cup (Listed, 1400m) by the same margin and in

a slick time of 1.21.67. It was his first attempt at

stakes class, having progressed quickly through

the grades over recent weeks.

Truly homebred, Unusual Countess is the

first New Zealand winner, as well as the first

stakes winner, for her American-bred Group

1-winning sire Unusual Suspect (Unusual

Heat), who is resident at the Auret’s property,

Letham Stud, near Marton.

Arriving in New Zealand in 2017, after two

stud seasons in Australia, Unusual Suspect was,

first and foremost, a racehorse. He racked up

ten wins and more than $1.5 million in his seven

seasons of racing, indicating that he remained

sound right up to age eight and his retirement.

He raced in four different countries, starting

out at two in California with a Del Mar victory

as well as a Group 3 second at Hollywood Park.

His best season, wins-wise, was at three, adding

five victories, three of which were at stakes

level, including the Hollywood Turf Express

Handicap (Gr 3, 6f) and the Bay Meadows

Derby (Listed, 8.5f).

At four and five he notched two more Listed

races, at Golden Gate Fields and Del Mar, but

at six he rose to Group 1 level, taking out the

prestigious Hollywood Turf Cup (Gr 1, 12f).

In a dozen starts in Australia, all stakes

races, he nabbed the Werribee Cup (Listed,

2600m), placed in the Sandown Cup (Listed,

3200m), ran in two Melbourne Cups (Gr 1,

3200m) and in a Caulfield Cup (Gr.1, 2400m).

His sire, Unusual Heat, may be a bit of a mystery

to breeders in this part of the world but his

credentials, especially in California, are massive.

US-bred and Irish-raced, the son of the great

Nureyev (Northern Dancer) won three Listed

races in Ireland before he was exported to the US.

At stud, his best performer is Acclamation,

a six-time Group 1 winner, one of four for the

stallion, who is resident at Harris Farms in the

state, with three stakes winners to his name.

With a total of 51 stakes winners, Unusual

Heat has been the leading sire in California on

seven occasions and the leading Turf sire of the

state an incredible 14 times which resulted in

his being inducted into the CTBA Hall of Fame

in 2018.

Kiwi Chronicles caught up with Nigel Auret,

principal at Letham Stud, who lamented the

move away from the potent California stallions,

from where his Unusual Suspect hails.

“New Zealand has had some very good sires

from California including Pompeii Court, (from) who

we used to get Pompeii Pearl. There was also that

very good sprinter-miler Sharivari. We seem to have

gone away from stallions from California,” he said.

Unusual Suspect’s dam, Penpont was

bred in New Zealand and is by Crested Wave

(Crozier), who stood successfully at Haunui

Farm where he sired 25 stakes winners, 11 of

them at Group 1 level.

Penpont, a winner in the US, has also

produced Unusual Suspect’s year-younger

Group 1-winning sister, Golden Doc A. She was

a dual Listed winner at two before taking out

the Las Virgenes Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Santa Anita

the following year, also finishing second in the

Santa Anita Oaks (Gr 1, 8.5f).

Unusual Countess (right) LOVERACINGNZ

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY

| 15 |

Penpont’s granddam, Black Willow (Sobig)

was the top New Zealand two-year-old filly of her

year. The Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m) was one of four wins at two. She would

add two further open handicaps, both at Trentham.

Nigel and Adaire Auret acquired their

foundation mare Tricky Spi (Trictrac) at the

1974 Wrightson Bloodstock May Sale as a

yearling. She was the last foal of Belle Spi (Beau

Vite) and the Aurets have enjoyed great success

from this family since then, but Unusual

Countess is just that little bit special, as she by

their own resident stallion.

Unusual Countess and Streak Of Power

are very closely related. The former is out of

Countessofdelgatie (One Cool Cat), a half-sister

to the top-class racemare Saint Cecile (Pompeii

Court). Streak Of Power is from Stracile

(Stravinsky), a daughter of Saint Cecile.

Saint Cecile had plenty of talent, winning

eight times including four at stakes level. Two

of her wins were in the same race: she has

the distinction of winning the first Group 1

New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes

(1600m), having won the same Te Aroha race

the previous year, before the race was promoted

to a Group 1 from Group 2 status.

She ranks as a three-quarter-blood sister

to Champion Two-Year-Old Pompeii Pearl

(Pompeii Court), also raced by the Aurets,

whose best effort was scoring the Manawatu

Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Their dams, Pearl Harbour (Harbor Prince)

and Delgatie Queen (Spectacular Love) are

daughters of Tricky Spi

Tricky Spi produced seven individual

winners from nine foals. She, herself, may not

have produced a stakes winner, but her daughters

are golden. Her sole black-type performer was

Sneeky Spi (Decies), who is the third dam of

recent Group 3 winner Lanciato (Per Incanto).

When Kiwi Chronicles spoke with Nigel

Auret, he was still basking in the glow of the

Riccarton result 48 hours later.

“Pompeii Pearl changed our lives,” said

Auret. “We had a young family and a huge

mortgage at that time but when the filly was

unbeaten in her first five starts at two we were

approached to sell her. The proceeds made a

sizable hole in the mortgage, which turned our

lives around.

“This weekend was a huge thrill,” he said.

Out feeding the weanlings on Monday morning

Auret said aloud to all of them: ‘You seem to

have an extra spring in your step this morning!’.

An earlier daughter of Belle Spi was Princess

Ripa (Test Case) who has quite a dynasty in

Australia. Not only did she produce Group 2

winner, Torn Monarch (Sir Tristram), she is

also the granddam of Red Express (Sovereign

Red), successful in the Orlando Wines Classic

(Gr 1, 1500m), herself the dam of the fabulous

four-time Group 1-winning mare Dane Ripper

(Danehill).

Dane Ripper carried her form from Group

1 sprints, such as the Manikato Stakes (1200m)

to the WS Cox Plate (2040m). Just two of her 12

victories.

Belle Spi’s dam, Gold Spi (Gold Stand),

was the New Zealand Broodmare of the Year in

1965, courtesy of her outstanding daughter Ripa

(Pride Of Kildare). Successful in the Newmarket

Handicap (Gr 1, 6f) at Flemington, Ripa won 13

times before her export to the US and was one

of three Group 1 winners from her dam.

The other two were Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1,

8f) victor Prince Lea, a Pride Of Kildare (Royal

Charger) brother to Ripa. Group 1-winning two-

year-old Thunderhead (Hello Peter), winner of

Ellerslie’s Wills Championship Stakes (Gr 1, 7f)

as well as the Great Northern Guineas (Gr 2, 8f),

was the third.

Many Broodmares of the Year have

produced fewer than three elite performers, so

Gold Spi ranks as one the best.

New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m) winner Master Belt (Masterclass) is

another of the eight Group 1 winners and 35

stakes winners that descend from Gold Spi.

An unfortunate, yet clear, pattern

Several times over the last couple of months,

this column has brought to readers’ attention the

fact that a lot of the success by New Zealand-bred

horses lately is derived from stallions that are no

longer available to breeders here.

That pattern, as uncomfortable as it is,

continued this past weekend.

In addition to the rich (non-stakes) The

Coast Quality (1600m), run at Gosford on

Saturday, there were five Kiwi-bred stakes

winners: Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry), Polly

Grey (Azamour), Turn The Ace (Turn Me

Loose), Streak Of Power (Power) and Unusual

Countess (Unusual Suspect).

Adding The Coast winner Brandenburg

(Burgundy) and much-hyped Stradbroke

(Gr 1, 1400m) favourite, the unbeaten Ayrton

(Iffraaj), makes a total of seven individual

sires.

Of the seven, just two - Turn Me Loose

(Iffraaj) and Unusual Suspect (Unusual Heat) -

are all that is left to breeders. Jakkalberry (Storming

Home), Azamour (Night Shift) and Burgundy

(Redoute’s Choice) are no longer alive. Power

(Oasis Dream), who is enjoying a particularly good

run recently, is now in Queensland, while Iffraaj

(Zafonic) is now enjoying semi-retirement after a

splendid and lengthy Southern Hemisphere stint

at Haunui Farm.

But the future looks bright...Windsor Park Stud will be breaking out the

bubbles and caviar after Saturday’s tenacious

effort by Turn The Ace. His sire, Turn Me Loose,

has sent a strong message to breeders, in the

space of a week, with Turn The Ace his first

winner on May 1, before his subsequent first

win at stakes level on Saturday.

He joins Belardo (Lope De Vega) as New

Zealand-based stakes-winning first season

stallions this season.

Pleasingly, there may be more in the wings

for the gifted Group 1 sprinter-miler, according

to Andrew Forsman, who co-trains Turn The

Ace with Murray Baker.

“We have quite a few by Turn Me Loose in

the stable and I think he will definitely make

it as a stallion on what they are showing us at

home,” said Forsman.

“We weren’t too sure about backing him

(Turn The Ace) up after his win last week, but he

did really well, so we rolled the dice and got the

result we were looking for,” he added. “It was a

super win, from a very tough horse, who I think

is going to thrive with some time off now before

we look at a three-year-old campaign.”

Commentator George Simon (who co-bred

Turn Me Loose, with his wife Maryanne), was

the ultimate professional when calling the tight

finish in the Listed feature. He knew the result was

very close but let the judge make the call despite

wishing for the obvious. Well done, George.

Kiwi Chronicles spoke with Steve Till, general

manager of Windsor Park Stud, who was pleased

with the start of their young stallion.

“We are simply delighted to see Turn Me

Loose off to such a great start to his stud career.

We are also a little bit surprised. Like Turn Me

Loose, they should be even better at three so we

are very excited,” he said.

“Turn The Ace showed some of his Dad’s

attributes, too. He just toughed it out. It’s quite

special to see a horse challenged, as he was,

then show how big their ticker is. That was also

Turn Me Loose,” he continued. “A great start

but, as I am often reminded, it’s where you

finish that counts.”

Four Derbys, anyone?Explosive Jack is a star. Clearly, he has

enormous staying ability and that was made

very clear after he strolled away with his third

Derby, adding the South Australian Derby (Gr

1, 2500m) to the Tasmanian Derby (Listed,

2200m) and last month’s Australian Derby

(Gr.1, 2400m), taking his record to five wins in

eight starts.

The son of Jakkalberry had every excuse to

be defeated. With a circuit remaining he was

three wide, shuffled back to fifth-last on the

first turn then improved down the back, yet

still three wide. From the 600 metres he was

stoked up but, rounding into the straight,

now four wide, he was simply too strong to

the line. It was a dominant victory and his

connections are contemplating a start in the

Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm

later this month.

Were Explosive Jack to succeed in Brisbane

he would join Dayana (Oncidium) as the only

horse to bag four Derbys. Dayana’s four were

at Flemington, Morphettville and two at Ascot

in Perth. Accordingly, his dam Dicidiana

(Agricola) was named Broodmare of the Year.

Her granddam Sunbride (Tai-Yang) twice won

the award and was recently inducted into the

New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame.

Could Explosive Jack’s dam, Extra Explosive

(Ekraar), be a player in this year’s Broodmare

of the Year Award? She is definitely a strong

contender.

Excitement machineAlready favourite for the Stradbroke

Handicap, although he has yet to qualify,

Ayrton (Iffraaj) maintained his unbeaten record

in three starts with the easiest of wins in the last

at Caulfield on Saturday.

In his biggest test yet, Ayrton backed up the

hype when grabbing the lead in a stride at the

200 metres then under hands and heels was

simply too classy. He was eased well shy of the

post.

A win in the Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1400m),

to be run at Eagle Farm on May 29th, will ensure

a start in the Stradbroke.

According to co-trainer Mick Price: “I

think he’s one of the better horses I’ve had. I

remember after the horse’s first start, a couple

of Hong Kong people rang and I usually say,

‘Give me a figure’ but this was a plain ‘No, not

happening’.”

Interestingly, Price believes that the 1200

metres, run and won in 1.10.08, of Saturday’s

win is not the gelding’s best distance. “I still say

that 1200 metres, when you look back on his

form when he gets a bit older, it will not be his

best distance,” Price said.

“He’s got a bit to learn but I think 1400

metres and a mile will be good. We’ve got our

little plan, which includes a trip and then that’ll

be us this prep,” said Price.

Ayrton was catalogued but withdrawn from

the 2019 NZB Karaka Ready To Run Sale. His

dam Odessa (Falkirk) never raced but at stud is

two for two. She is a half-sister to Eulogy Stakes

(Gr 3, 1600m) winner Monterey Bay (Kaapstad).

Odessa’s dam, Sabbatical (Bakharoff), was

a Listed winner of four races including the

Canterbury Belle Stakes (1200m) at Riccarton

while her granddam was the very speedy

Secunda (Acidity). Secunda’s six wins included

three at stakes level as a two-year-old, her

premier performance coming in Caulfield’s

Debutante Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m).

Secunda’s fourth dam was Sweet Nymph

(Neptune), also the fourth dam of the brilliant,

yet tragically lost, Dulcify (Decies). Along with

her younger sister, Sweet Spray (Neptune), the

only foals of their dam Sugar Kandy (Colombo),

each won the Great Northern Derby (Gr 1, 12f),

giving the boys a galloping lesson.

Peter Leyshan’s endless patience and

determination was rewarded in the

best possible way on Friday night,

when his former top-class galloper

Eclair Lightning (Darci Brahma) returned to the

winner’s circle with a dashing last stride win in

the Class 2 over 1500 metres.

Given a great ride by Breinell Yamzon, Eclair

Lightning was positioned towards the back of

the field in a race run at slick speed. Once in the

straight, Yamzon let Eclair Lightning balance

up and he rolled off the back of Cherry Road

(Niagara) to find clear running. He stormed

home late to snatch victory from Treasurelake

Buddy (Snitzel) in a great finish, with dead

heaters Luen On Poseidon (Pierro) and Winnie

Star (Medaglia D’Oro) close up in third.

It has been a long road to recovery for Eclair

Lightning, who was runner up to Sacred Capital

(O’Reilly) in the 2019 Macau Derby (Listed,

1800m).

The gelding’s record now reads three wins,

four seconds and one third from 13 starts, but

the stats do not tell the true story. Twice he

chased home Sacred Capital, giving him a

decent run for his money on one occasion after

he was severely checked early in the run.

Another three-quarter-length second

followed behind Lover Paradise (Canford Cliffs)

after a nightmare run from gate eleven, plus a

second-place on debut over an unsuitable 1200

metres.

It was a relieved Peter Leyshan after the win,

with the former Champion trainer describing it

as one of the most satisfying moments of his

long career.

“Seeing this horse win again has given me

an enormous amount of pride. It’s been a long

wait and a long road to recovery,” he said.

“I was happy with his first-up run, and then

his second up run at 1200 was very encouraging;

the way he ran on late and was only beaten two

lengths. Breinell gave him a lovely ride; he gave

him time to settle and kept him nicely balanced

up.

“He did a tendon in a race back in November

2019, so he was away from the racetrack for 16

months in total. I am so grateful to the owners,

The Eclair Syndicate, they have been so patient

and understanding. We knew we had a class

horse; it was just a matter of if we could get him

back again.

“The first thing I did was give him four

months' box rest, then it was just lots of

swimming, walking and trotting for months,

before we went any further. He has pulled up

in great shape after Friday’s run and I will be

aiming for a Class 1 race next month with him.”

Eclair Lightning was a NZ$125,000

purchase at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock

Ready to Run Sale.

Geoff Allendorf was another trainer that

derived a great deal of satisfaction from the

win of Turquoise Success (All Too Hard), in

Sunday’s Class 4 & 5 over 1500 metres.

Turquoise Success made it three wins from

his last four runs in the hands of Massa Tanaka

when he defeated Dutch Shell (Al Maher), with

his stablemate Global Justice (Declaration Of

War) running on for third.

Four-year-old Turquoise Success is out

of Peintre Celebre (Nureyev) mare Frescante,

making him a half-brother to the Listed-placed

Weekend Special (Snitzel). The gelding showed

ability from day one in the enclave, however

he was not carrying his trackwork form over to

raceday.

The chestnut was a beaten favorite on

numerous occasions over 1200-metre trips and

was always the maker of his own demise by

racing too fiercely and compounding.

In a bold move, Allendorf stepped the

gelding up to 1500 metres. At his first run at the

trip, he set up a big lead before running out a

one and three-quarter-length winner. A close

second at 1500 metres followed next, before an

easy four and a quarter-length win again at the

distance.

“He has always worked like a higher-class

horse, but has always went a bit hard in his races.

It was good today that he even let the leader go

and sat in second spot,” Allendorf said.

“It was a good ride by Masa. I definitely

think he is capable of getting to a much higher

grade, but we need to get him to relax more.”

Luen On Prosperity (Written Tycoon) gave

Allendorf a quick race-to-race double when

he led throughout to win the Class 4 over 1200

metres under Luis Corrales.

It was win number four for the progressive

four-year-old, who has managed to place

on seven other occasions from his 19 starts,

picking up close to three-quarters of a million

in prize money along the way for owner Mr.

Thomas Lau.

Golden Conqueror (Rothesay), Macau’s

reigning sand champion, let his crown slip on

Sunday when he suffered just his second defeat

on the all-weather track at the hands of the

Stanley Chin-trained Mountain Tiger (Coats

Choice).

Sent out the evens favourite, the Roger

Yu-ridden Golden Conqueror took up his

customary front-running role to lead, hotly

pursued in the run by second favourite Rock

To Road (Stryker). Rock To Road had been the

only horse to defeat Golden Conqueror back in

March last year, and had been runner-up to him

on three occasions since.

Many form students thought the 13 pounds

pull in the weights from their last encounter

in February, where Golden Conqueror beat

Rock To Road by a neck, would be the champs

downfall, however just as Rock To Road laid

down the gauntlet to Golden Conqueror in the

home straight, Mountain Tiger came storming

down the outside to beat Golden Conqueror by

two and a quarter lengths, with Rock To Road

three-quarters of a

length away in third.

Before Sunday,

Golden Conqueror’s

sand record read ten

starts for nine wins

and one second;

pretty impressive

for an AU$55,000

buy from the 2018

Inglis Ready to Race

Sale, that has now

earnt over HK$1.7

million (approx.

AU$277,823).

The win by Mountain

Eagle gave Luis Corrales five winners for the

weekend as he surges away with an eight-win

lead over Eric Cheung on 37, with Masa Tanaka

in third on 27 winners.

Breinell Yamzon kicked home a double

for the weekend with both Eclair Lightning

on Friday night, and Fortune Lady (Sepoy) in

Sunday’s Class 4 & 5 (Division two) over 1500

metres.

Prepared by Ricky Choi, Fortune Lady

made it three straight wins when she produced

a quick turn of foot to burst out of the pack to

beat Luen On Prodigy (Husson), with four

lengths back to Yings Fans (Thewayyouare) in

third.

off the back of two trial seconds and flashed

home late under Robbie Fradd to deny

Vienna Empress (Holy Roman Emperor) by a

placed at Group 3 level during a 20 start

career. Meanwhile, the Tommy Berry-ridden

Astrologer, who placed in the Breeders’ Plate

race favourite Overmann (Hinchinbrook) by

Kingman - The German-bred Schnell

Meister (3 c ex Serienholde by Soldier

Hollow) struck at the top level on what was

just his third start, winning the NHK Mile

Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) at Tokyo. The Toru

Hayashi-trained filly Songline (Kizuna)

bounced back from a disappointing run

in the Oka Sho (Gr 1, 1600m) and was

only denied victory in the last stride as

Schnell Meister, runner-up in the Yayoi

Sho (Gr 2, 2000m) last start, lunged late

to win by a nose in a time just 0.2 secs

outside of the race record. Race favourite

Grenadier Guards (Frankel) hit the front

with 400 metres to run, but was overrun

by his fellow Sunday Racing Co. Ltd-

owned three-year-olds and clung onto

third, a further two and a half lengths

behind Songline. With victory Schnell

Meister also became the fourth individual

Group 1 winner and the 35th individual

stakes winner for his Juddmonte stallion

Kingman (Invincible Spirit). “He jumped

out of the gate well but I didn’t want to

pressure him too much in the early stages

but while sitting in midfield, we still had

to put in some effort to keep with the rapid

pace,” said jockey Chistophe Lemaire.

“He took some time to get into gear but

eventually got into a good rhythm and

responded strongly in the critical stages.

We were able to follow Songline into the

homestretch for the attack and had just

that little more when Songline started to

lean near the finish. There is still a lot of

greenness in Schnell Meister and has a lot

of room for improvement but once he’s

established himself physically, he should

be able to handle the best at Group 1

level.” Schnell Meister is the first foal out

of Preis der Diana (Gr 1, 2200m) winner

Serienholde (Soldier Hollow), a half-sister

to two-year-old Group 2 winner Serienhoehe

(High Chaparral).

New stakes winnersAuthorized - Authorized (Montjeu)

sired his 36th individual stakes winner

when Mighty Blue (5 m ex Millionaia by

Peintre Celebre) took the EBF Vintage

Tipple Stakes (Listed, 1m 6f ) by seven

and a half lengths at Gowran Park on

Wednesday. The mare ran third in the

Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (Gr 2, 2m 1f ) at

the Cheltenham Festival in March, having

placed third in the Loughbrowne Stakes

(Gr 3, 2m) at the Curragh in September

after joining trainer Joseph O’Brien

from Henri-Francois Devin last year.

Mighty Blue tracked the leaders before

leading two-out and scored readily under

Dylan Brown McMonagal, with Lismore

(Zoffany) in second and Yaxeni (Maxios)

a further head behind in third. “She's

one tough filly who's been on the go all

year," assistant trainer Brendan Powell

said of the 6-1 winner. Mighty Blue’s dam

was runner-up in the Prix de Diane (Gr 1,

2000m) and is out of the Prix Saint-Alary

(Gr 1, 2000m) heroine Moonlight Dance

(Alysheba). The filly was bred by Dayton

Investments Ltd. and was sold privately

for €55,000 to Blandford Bloodstock from

the La Motteraye Consignment at the 2017

Arqana Breeding Stock Sale. Authorized

stands at the Jockey Club of Turkey for

€12,500 (Approx. AU$19,400).

Blame - Saiydabad (3 c ex Sarkiyla by

Oasis Dream) maintained his unbeaten

start to his career when taking out the Prix

de Suresnes (Listed, 2000m) at Chantilly

on Tuesday, earning Blame (Arch) his

33rd individual stakes winner. The Jean-

Claude Rouget-trained colt made a winning

debut in March before following that up

with another success last month. Running

in stakes company for the first time

under Christophe Soumillon, Saiydabad

comfortably held off Absurde (Fastnet Rock)

by half a length, with Baha Mar (Siyouni)

finishing two lengths behind the winner

in third. Saiydabad is the sole winner out

of Sarkiyla (Oasis Dream), who finished

runner-up in the 2013 Prix Jean Romanet

(Gr 1, 2000m) and also won at Group 3 level

during a 14-start career in France. Blame,

the sire of five elite-level winners, stands at

Claiborne Farm in Kentucky for a US$30,000

(approx. AU$38,920) fee.

individual stakes winner. Khalifa Sat was a 50-1

second for owner Ahmad Al Shaikh in the Derby

Spirit was shortened to 25-1 (from 100) for

the Derby after his length-and-three-quarter

triumph over Sandhurst (Galileo). A length

back in third was Fancy Man (Pride Of Dubai),

while favourite Wirko (Kingman) faded out

Qaysar (6 g ex Coco Demure by Titus Livius).

The Richard Hannon-trained gelding was

recording his first stakes success and thus

became the 99th individual stakes winner for

his sire Choisir (Danehill Dancer), who was

pensioned from stud duties at Coolmore Stud

last year at the age of 21. Ridden by Joe Fanning,

Qaysar came up the stands side in the final furlong

and asserted to win by a length and a quarter from

Tomfre (Cable Bay) while the favourite Raaeq

(Kingman) was a further two lengths away in

third. Qaysar was a €200,000 Arqana Breeze-Up

purchase by Peter and Ross Doyle and is a half-

brother to two French stakes winners out of the

Italian Listed winner Coco Demure (Titus Livius).

Constitution - Promise Keeper (3 c ex Mira

Alta by Curlin) scored a comfortable victory in

the Peter Pan Stakes (Gr 3, 9f) at Belmont Park

number 20 for Constitution (Tapit). The Todd

Pletcher-trained colt was sent off favourite

and cruised to a two-and-a-quarter-length win

over Nova Rags (Union Rags), with Overtook

(Curlin) another one and a half lengths back

in third. Out of Curlin (Smart Strike) mare Mira

Alta, Promise Keeper is a half-brother to stakes

winner Wicked Awesome (Awesome Again)

and stakes-placed War Stopper (Declaration Of

War). Constitution, the sire of four elite-level

winners, stands at WinStar Farm in Kentucky

for US$85,000 (approx. AU$108,360).

Dawn Approach - Jim Bolger and Kevin

Manning struck again with a homebred son of

Dawn Approach (New Approach) last Monday

when Lunar Space (3 g ex Luminaria by Danehill)

broke his maiden at the eighth attempt in fine

style when taking out the Tetrarch Stakes (Listed

7f) at the Curragh. The team struck gold in the

2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) with Poetic Flare (Dawn

Approach) at Newmarket on Saturday and Lunar

Space, who was sent off at 14-1, becomes the

15th individual stakes winner for the sire, who

moved from Darley’s Kildangan Stud to Bolger’s

Redmondstown Stud in Co Wexford this year.

Lunar Space placed twice from five starts as

a juvenile and was only beaten a short head

second-up this term in first-time blinkers. The

gelding was prominent throughout and showed

battling qualities when headed by Magnanimous

(Mehmas) close home to rally back and win by

half a length from that rival with Horoscope

(No Nay Never) a further three and a half

lengths back in third. All three of the stakes

winners by Dawn Approach this year, including

James Cummings’ Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3,

1100m) winner Paulele, have been bred on the

Danehill (Danzig) cross.

Deep Impact - Red Genesis (3 c ex

Ryzhkina by Storm Cat) led home a Yasuo

Tomomichi-trained one-two in the Kyoto

Shimbun Hai (Gr 3, 2200m), another trial for

the Tokyo Yushun, at Chukyo and became the

174th individual stakes winner for the late Deep

Impact (Sunday Silence). The three-year-old

broke his maiden at his fourth start last year and

won on his first start at a distance beyond 2000

metres second-up last month. His tally now

stands at three wins from seven starts. Held up

under Yuga Kawada, Red Genesis came wide in

the straight to run down stablemate Lupercalia

(Maurice) and win cosily by three-quarters of a

length with the same distance back to Machaon

D'Or (Gold Ship) in third. Red Genesis is out

sired his 81st individual stakes winner when

El Drama (3 c ex Victoire Finale by Peintre

Celebre) boxed on to a solid victory in the

Dee Stakes (Listed, 1m 2.5f) at Chester on

Thursday. The Roger Varian-trained three-

year-old pressed for the lead and took control

off the home turn, galloping down the centre

of the course under Andrea Atzeni to hold the

rail-running runner-up Maximal (Galileo) by a

length, with Earlswood (Pivotal) a further two

and three-quarter lengths behind in third. It

was his second win at his fourth start, having

broken his maiden over seven furlongs on debut

at Doncaster in October. Bred by Farm Cave

thoroughbreds, the colt was knocked down to

Varian for 425,000gns out of the Ballylinch Stud

draft at the 2019 Tattersalls Book 1 Yearling

Sale. El Drama is a half-brother to the Oaks (Gr

1, 2400m) and Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) third

Volume (Mount Nelson), the dam of National

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Quorto (Dubawi).

His second dam, Victoire Bleue (Legend Of

France) was a Group 1-winning stayer in

France. Lope De Vega stands at Ballylinch Stud

for a fee of €125,000 (Approx AU$194,000).

Lord Kanaloa - Keizo Ito-trained six-year-

old Gold Gear (6 h ex Ginza Bonanza by Zenno

Rob Roy) broke through at stakes level in the

Metropolitan Stakes (Listed, 2400m) at Tokyo

to become the 26th individual stakes winner for

Lord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha). The Yamato

Racing-raced entire has been campaigned at

stakes level for his last five starts, but failed to

make the frame, however this success takes his

overall tally to five wins from 28 starts. Settled

towards the rear by Hironobu Tanabe, Gold

Gear picked up in the straight to get up in the

shadow of the post and win by a neck from

Partiamo (Workforce) and Diamant Minoru

(Orfevre), who were split by a nose respectively

for second and third. Gold Gear is the second

winner from five runners out of Listed scorer

Ginza Bonanza (Zenno Rob Roy). Lord Kanaloa

stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of

¥15,000,000 (approx. AU$176,000).

Manduro - Iresine (4 g ex Inanga by Oasis

Dream) stepped into stakes company for the

first time on Saturday and was impressive when

taking out the Prix Bedel (Listed, 2400m) at Lyon

Parilly for Jean-Pierre Gauvin. He became the

36th individual stakes winner for late Darley sire

Manduro (Monsun), who died of a heart attack last

year aged 18. The four-year-old is now unbeaten

in his last six starts and he only tasted defeat once

on debut when third in July 2020. Ridden by Marie

Velon, he got the better of the two German raiders

Dawn Intello (Intello) and Adrian (Reliable Man)

to record a six-length victory. Iresine was a €6,000

Arqana yearling purchase by the trainer and is

out of a sister to the Group 3-placed In Chambers

(Oasis Dream).

Muhaarar - Albaflora (4 f ex Almiranta by

Galileo) gained a well deserved stakes victory

at Ascot on Saturday in the Buckhounds Stakes

(Listed, 1m 4f) for Kirsten Rausing and Ralph

Beckett to become the third individual stakes

winner for Muhaarar (Oasis Dream). A debut

winner last June, she has been knocking on the

door in stakes company since, running second in

the Musidora Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2.5f) last July and

beaten a head on her last two starts this term,

including in the Noel Murless Stakes (Listed, 1m

6f) in October. Ridden by Rossa Ryan, the four-

year-old was a decisive seven-length winner this

time, beating Tribal Craft (Mastercraftsman) and

Without A Fight (Teofilo), who were strung out by

the same distance again for second and third. She

is a half-sister to three stakes winners in Alyssa

(Sir Percy), Alea Iacta (Invincible Spirit) and Aloe

Vera (Invincible Spirit) out of a placed half-sister

to Group 3 scorer Alla Speranza (Sir Percy). The

family goes back to Rausing’s foundation mare

Alruccaba (Crystal Palace). Muhaarar stands at

Shadwell’s Nunnery Stud where his fee is £10,000

(approx. AU$17,816).

Power - Streak Of Power’s (4 g ex Stracile

by Stravinsky) victory in the Daphne Bannan

Memorial Easter Stakes (Listed, 1600m) provided

Oaklands Stud sire Power (Oasis Dream) with his

20th individual stakes winner. The four-year-old

was ridden by apprentice Wiremu Pinn and he

got the better of a three-way battle with She’s A

Lady (Swiss Ace) and Belle Fascino (Per Incanto)

to win by a short head. Fraser Auret took over the

reins from his father five months ago and Streak

Of Power was part of that team. “I took on Dad’s

team when he retired and this is one horse who

has really thrived,” Auret said. “He has gone from

a rating 65 winner to a stakes winner and I think

there is still improvement to come from him. He

was really brave today as he didn’t get things his

own way in front and had to scrap it out with two

very nice mares in the last 200 metres. He can also

go home for a break, but now we know he can

compete at a higher level there could be some

nice races on his programme during his next

campaign.” Power stands at Oaklands Stud in

Queensland where his fee for 2021 will be $13,200.

Real Saga - The David Pfieffer-trained

Yamazaki (5 m ex Wabeel by Commands) got

off the mark in stakes company when landing

the Silk Stocking Handicap (Listed, 1400m)

at the Gold Coast on Saturday, earning the

late Real Saga (Tale Of The Cat) his eighth

individual stakes winner. The five-year-old

mare, who was making her 35th start, finished

fifth in the Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) last

time out, beaten just one and a half lengths,

and capitalised on a step down in class to defeat

Wonderful Riri (Barbados) by a comfortable

two and a quarter lengths. Gem Of Scotland

(Rothesay) was another one and a quarter

lengths back in third. Yamazaki is the first stakes

winner out of Wabeel (Commands), whose filly

by Capitalist (Written Tycoon) sold for $330,000

at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale. Former Palm Valley Thoroughbreds

stallion Real Saga died in February 2019.

Rip Van Winkle - Rip Van Lips (5 h ex

Red Lips by Areion) became the late Rip Van

Winkle’s (Galileo) 33rd individual stakes

winner after he landed the Oleander-Rennen

(Gr 2, 2m) at Hoppegarten on Sunday. The

Andreas Suborics-trained five-year-old

finished a narrow runner-up at this level on

his final start of last season and went one

better with a two-and-a-half-length defeat of

Memphis (Jukebox Jury). Brokeback Mountain

(Le Havre) was three lengths behind the winner

in third. Rip Van Lips is the sole winner out of

Group 1-placed mare Red Lips (Areion). Rip

Van Winkle, the sire of three Group 1 winners

Rulership - Baji O (3 c ex Flawless Dancer

by Harbinger) was an impressive winner of

the Principal Stakes (Listed, 2000m) at Tokyo,

where he became the 19th individual stakes

winner for Rulership (King Kamehameha) and

also booked his ticket for the Tokyo Yushun

(Japanese Derby) (Gr 1, 2400m). The Hiroyasu

Tanaka-trained three-year-old tracked the

pace and was pushed out close home to glide

to a length and a half victory over Dios Valiente

(Lord Kanaloa), while there was the same

distance back to Taiso (Maurice) in third.

Baji O broke his maiden on his third start last

term and this was his second victory at his sixth

start. He is out of winning mare Flawless Dancer

(Harbinger), while his second dam was Japanese

Champion Dance In The Mood (Sunday Silence).

Baji O was a ¥58,000,000 yearling purchase by

Tsuyoshi Suzuki from breeder Shadai Farm.

Rulership stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a

fee of ¥4,000,000 (approx. AU$47,000).

Sea The Stars - Outsider of the field Third

Realm (3 c ex Reem Three by Mark Of Esteem) got

the better of the favourite Adayar (Frankel) in the

Derby Trial Stakes (Listed, 1m 3.5f) at Lingfield on

Saturday. The Roger Varian-trained colt, who only

ran once as a juvenile, returned with a maiden win

at Nottingham last month and stepped up to the

challenge in the rain softened ground. His victory

makes him the 76th individual stakes winner for his

sire Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) who stands at the

Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland for €150,000

(approx. AU$232,600). David Egan guided the

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid homebred to a length

and a quarter victory over Adayar and the pair were a

further five and a half lengths clear of Scope (Teofilo)

in third. He is one of four stakes winners out of the

Listed-placed Reem Three (Mark Of Esteem), which

include the French Champion and Group 1 winner

Ajman Princess (Teofilo)

Sebring - The late Sebring (More Than

Ready) had a productive Saturday with two

new individual stakes winners. Biscayne Bay

(2 f ex Fratianne by Lonhro) got the former

Widden sire’s day off to a flyer when she

took out the SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 3,

1400m) at Morphettville. The Tom Dabernig

and Ben Hayes-trained filly improved on her

second-placed effort in the Anzac Day Stakes

(Listed, 1400m) last month to land this Group

3 contest by a head from Blushing Tycoon

(Written Tycoon). Cloudy (Frosted) was

the same distance further behind in third.

Biscayne Bay, a half-sister to Group 2 winner

Tenley (Medaglia D’Oro), was purchased for

$410,000 from last year’s Magic Millions Gold

Coast Yearling Sale. Later in the afternoon,

Grace And Harmony (3 f ex Champagne

Harmony by Choisir) scored a hat-trick when

landing the Gold Coast Bracelet (Listed,

1800m) under James McDonald, leading

home a Chris Waller-trained trifecta. The

three-year-old filly followed up wins at

Newcastle and Randwick with a one and

three-quarter-length defeat of Signora Nera

(Sweynesse). Only Words (Sweynesse) was

another half-length behind in third, while

Waller also trained the fifth-placed Easifar

(Pride Of Dubai). Sebring, the sire of six elite-

level winners, died in February 2019.

Shalaa - No Speak Alexander (3 f ex Rapacity

Alexander by Dandy Man) battled on well to land the

Athasi Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at the Curragh last Monday,

earning Arrowfield shuttler Shalaa (Invincible

Spirit) his third individual stakes winner. Making

her seasonal return, the Jessica Harrington-trained

filly kept on strongly in the final stages to defeat

stablemate Zaffy's Pride (Pride Of Dubai) by a length

and a half, with Soul Search (Zoffany) two lengths

behind the winner in third. No Speak Alexander is

the first foal out of Listed winner Rapacity Alexander

(Dandy Man), who is a full-sister to 2015 Hong Kong

Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Peniaphobia. Shalaa,

who currently sits third in the Australian first season

sires table (by earnings), will return to Australia for

the southern hemisphere breeding season where

he will stand at Arrowfield for an increased fee of

$44,000 (inc GST). No Speak Alexander joins Pago

Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Shaquero as

a Group 3 winner for Shalaa, who has also sired

French Listed winner King Shalaa.

Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Gosford on Saturday

to become the 13th individual stakes winner

for Shamus Award (Snitzel). The four-year-old

mare was being tried in stakes company for the

second time after running unplaced in last year’s

James HB Carr Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) and justified

favouritism with a half-length defeat over Snitz

(Snitzel). Easy Eddie (Super Easy) was another

three-quarters of a length back in third. Enchanted

Heart, the second foal out of Shattered Heart (Show

A Heart), herself a sister to Group 2 winner Luke’s

Luck, was purchased for $80,000 by Australian

Bloodstock at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling

Sale. Shamus Award, the sire of last weekend’s

Australiasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Media

Award, will stand at Rosemont Stud for $33,000 in

2021, up from last year’s fee of $19,800.

Starspangledbanner - Castle Star (2 c

ex Awohaam by Iffraaj) impressively landed

the First Flier Stakes (Listed, 5f) at the

Curragh last Monday to earn shuttle stallion

Starspangledbanner (Choisir) his 16th

individual stakes winner. The Fozzy Stack-

trained colt picked up nicely in the final furlong

under Chris Hayes to defeat Loveday (Bungle

Inthejungle) by one and three-quarter lengths,

with Missing Matron (Vocalised) a head further

back in third. Out of two-time winner Awohaam

(Iffraaj), Castle Star was making his third start

after finishing runner-up in maiden company

on his previous two starts. Starspangledbanner

is currently standing at Coolmore in Ireland

but will return to Rosemont Stud to stand

for $16,500 (inc GST) for the 2021 southern

hemisphere breeding season.

Teofilo - Dubai Fountain (3 f ex Nafura by

Dubawi) will head straight to Epsom for next

month's Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) after announcing

herself as a live contender for the Classic with

victory in the Cheshire Oaks (Listed, 1m 3.5f) at

Chester for trainer Mark Johnston, and in turn

edged former shuttler Teofilo (Galileo) closer to a

century of individual stakes winners (97). Ridden

by Franny Norton, the 13-8 favourite tracked

the pace and held off the previously unbeaten

Zeyaadah (Tamayuz) by a length.

Nicest (American Pharoah) was

another four and three-quarter

lengths back in third. Darley’s

Teofilo stands at Kildangan Stud

in Ireland for €30,000 (approx.

AU$46,490).

Turn Me Loose - Windsor

Park Stud stallion Turn Me Loose

(Iffraaj) sired his first stakes

winner when the Murray Baker

and Andrew Foresman-trained

two-year-old Turn The Ace (2 g

ex Frescoes by Lonhro) took out

the Waikato Equine Veterinary

Centre 2YO Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Te Rapa.

The juvenile provided the sire with his first

winner when successful on debut last Saturday

and remained unbeaten here when putting up

a determined performance to get the better

of Rangi Toa (Shamexpress) by the barest of

margins. The pair were a length and a quarter

clear of Beldarra (Hinchinbrook) in third. “We

weren’t too sure about backing him up after

his win last week, but he did really well, so

we rolled the dice and got the result we were

looking for.” Forsman said. “It was a super win,

from a very tough horse, who I think is going to

thrive with some time off now before we look at

a three-year-old campaign.”

Unusual Suspect - Trainer Fraser Auret

recorded a stakes double at Riccarton on

Saturday which started out with two-year-

old debutant Unusual Countess (2 f ex

Countessofdelgatie by One Cool Cat) taking

the Berkley Stud Champagne Stakes (Listed,

1200m), while lightly-raced four-year-old Streak

Of Power (Power) landed the Daphne Bannan

Memorial Easter Stakes (Listed, 1600m). Both

horses are raced by Auret’s parents Nigel and

Adaire, who also raced Unusual Countess’ sire

Unusual Suspect (Unusual Heat). She is the

first stakes winner for Hollywood Turf Cup (Gr

1, 12f) winner Unusual Suspect, who stands at

the Auret’s Letham Stud in Wanganui. Ridden

by Lisa Allpress, Unusual Countess tracked

the pace before taking over in the home run

and she shot clear to win by a head from the

fast-finishing Mackenzie Lad (Vespa). Nigel

Auret watched the race from home and was

delighted with the result. “Our dreams have

come to fruition,” he said. “We have always

had a huge opinion of this filly, but Fraser has

given her time to get over a few niggles as she

went shinsore after she won a trial at Otaki back

in February. Once she got past that she had a

jumpout a few weeks ago and went superbly, so

we set her for the race today.” Unusual Heat has

produced nine individual winners in Australia

and this is his first success in New Zealand.

Zoffany - Maker Of Kings (4 g ex Desire Moi

by Galileo) scored a battling victory in Sunday’s

Amethyst Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Leopardstown

to become the 41st individual stakes winner

for the late Zoffany (Dansili). The Ger Lyons-

trained gelding, who finished second in the

Irish Lincolnshire (1m) in March, dug deep

once sent to the front by Colin Keane to hold off

Erzindjan (Lope De Vega) by one and a quarter

lengths, with favourite Ace Aussie (Australia) a

neck further back in third. Maker Of Kings is the

first foal out of Desire Moi (Galileo), who is a

sister to multiple Group 1 winner Lush Lashes.

Coolmore’s Zoffany, who shuttled to Australia

for four seasons between 2012 and 2015, died

in January this year aged 13.
