It is with much excitement a few local people have been given the approval by Roadshow Public Performance Licensing to show the very popular movie The Dressmaker at the Globe Theatre Winchelsea.

The idea developed when volunteers working at The Dressmaker Exhibition heard from the hundreds of people coming through the door that many had not seen the movie or would love to see it again now they had seen the costumes.

We particularly thank Cr Heather Wellington who emailed tirelessly until this event was given approval. Approval is not always given so no pre advertising could be done until the event was approved on Feb 10.

With the licence in the bag, it was all hands on deck and thanks to Stu Fountain from Mudgroup, within 24 hours of the confirmation of the approval, we had the first poster up in the town at Fox’s Den and 5000 (yes) flyers ready to go around Winchelsea, neighbouring towns and the coast.

Sessions: Friday 26 February 7pm Saturday 27 February 11am & 1.30pm

Sunday 28 February 11am, 2pm & 6pm Cost: All tickets $10. No concession. This is an ‘M’ rated movie.

Depending on demand, more sessions will be available. See website below after the first weekend.

No bookings are required but if you do have a group of over 10 people coming from out of town, ring contact number below and we will reserve seats.

If for some reason the DVD is not released on the 25th February, please go to www.growingwinchelsea.com/dressmaker as the showing will be cancelled.

Proceeds will go to the Globe Theatre who are allowing the use of the hall at no cost and Barwon Park Promotors who work tirelessly for the Barwon Park Mansion.

Victorian landowners are encouraged to begin preparing for the arrival of the new calicivirus strain called Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus K5 (referred to as RHDV K5 or simply ‘K5’), in spring this year or autumn 2017.

Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) rabbit specialist John Matthews, said the new strain was a great opportunity for farmers but warned them not to stop their annual conventional control programs targeting rabbits and their warrens.

“K5 is a strain of the existing RHD virus already established and widespread in Australia and is predicted to yield better results in cooler-wetter regions, such as Victoria, where the current strain hasn’t been so successful,” Mr Matthews said.

“The combination of an improved biological control agent in K5, community-led rabbit management and using best practice rabbit management principles, should provide an opportunity to manage and maintain rabbit numbers at low levels.

“For some, K5 will be seen as a once in a generation opportunity to improve biological control options for rabbits in Australia, however, it’s important landholders don’t become complacent or hold off on control efforts with the expectation that they will only need to rely on K5 to do the job.

“Landowners should continue with annual rabbit management activities

to enable them to take advantage of any effect K5 or the existing biocontrol agents can provide,” he said.

Mr Matthews said Victoria has four release and monitoring sites specifically established to investigate the impact of K5 on Victorian rabbit populations in support of the national release strategy.

“These paired sites are located around Avalon, Sunbury, Kerang and Pyramid Hill and communities can also become involved in becoming a release site.”

These specific sites complement Victoria’s long-term rabbit population monitoring sites, which provide more than 20 years of critical data and analysis of rabbit numbers.

The release of K5 and recent occurrence of RHDV2 in Victoria offer a new opportunity for land- owners to begin a conversation with neighbours with the aim of coordinating integrated rabbit control at a landscape scale and for Landcare groups to get their community involved in rabbit management and monitoring for the disease.

Visit www.pestsmart.org.au/pest-animal-species/european-rabbit and follow the link “Boosting rabbit biocontrol” to find out how to get involved in the release.

Letters to the EditorDear Sir

This letter is a compilation of thoughts and comments of three different Winchelsea Ratepayer families, so rather than three letters we have only sent one.

Reading in this weeks Star that council can not understand why the Winchelsea community has the lowest satisfaction rate among the Surf Coast Shire wards with reference to the job that council is doing makes me laugh.

Everyone I talk to express their dissatisfaction because of the inefficiency and negativity of council towards projects in Winchelsea.

1. It takes years to get a sub division agreed to and far to long to get a planning permit for new businesses or extend an existing one.

2. I know nothing about the plans for a new Netball clubrooms but $500,000.00 seems a bit steep. ( Gold plated taps in the Washrooms ? ) You could build a McMansion for that cost, surely it could be built for a lesser amount, but never mind, Ratepayers will cough up the money and make the council look good.

3. The CEO is still complaining about Rate Capping and the tightness of revenue. Solution.Open up more land that is lying useless and unfarmed for housing development and get more rate revenue, it is not Rocket Science. As economic growth and inflation are around 2% to 2.5% and wages growth has slowed to almost zero, our council / CEO appear to see nothing wrong or unsustainable about a 5% plus rate rise year on year.

4. The new shops:-- We have Mark Gibbons Co-ord Design and Traffic Officer earning a salary paid for by ratepayers. So why do we have the problem

of parking at the Post Office and cars and trucks turning in front of the Police Station? Council are now engaging O’Brien’s Traffic, a consultant to sort out the mess? Why are we paying twice for the same job ? Why was the road not sealed and a turning circle implemented at the time of the shops being built ? Was it because our council could not see a future problem? Also there is no rubbish bin outside the new shops. Why ? Rubbish is just left amongst the “ flower beds “

5. The Winchelsea Common !Why is it taking years to fix the lead problem. Just put 18 inches of dirt across the common and bury the lead. Simple solution. If people are worried about native grasses, well dig them up and replant after the topsoil is laid. Once again, it is not Rocket Science.Or does council have an ulterior motive on procrastinating the fixing of the common. e.g Leave the land vacant for another year or so and then sell it to a developer for a nice profit and then go ahead and build Torquay’s $29,000,000 swimming pool

6. How long will the Clock at The Visitor Information Centre only tell the correct time twice a day. Time certainly stands still in Winchelsea. It must be at least a year since it has not worked. I bet it would have been telling the correct time this past year if it was in Torquay.

7. We still have gravel roads within the town boundaries.

8. Still not a lot of footpaths in town either.

9. A leaky swimming pool that has been leaking for many years, why wasn’t it fixed at the same time as the Faux grass was laid late last year ? Inefficient council ? and of

course not a roof in sight and only open a couple of months a year and then only a few hours a day. On the topic of Swimming pools how much did council waste of ratepayers money on the Torquay Pool debacle ?

10. One of the smallest, if not the smallest playground in the Surfcoast Shire, which is visited daily by many of the local families and traffic on the Princes Hwy when they stop at the toilets.. Anglesea has a playground 5 times the size of the one at the Mud Hut but is hardly seen by anyone/tourists. (Coogorah Park.)

11. When money gets tight a family looks at cutting waste and luxuries and reassesses their expenditure. A business person cuts waste and sometimes, reluctantly reduces the work force and reassesses the business model. They do not and cannot make a wish list of their wants and then demand a big pay rise from their boss ( in the Council’s case The Ratepayers ) or in a business case demand higher and higher prices from their customers. Parents tell their children and employers tell their staff” WE CAN’T AFFORD IT. Why can’t the council cut costs, stop wasting money on items that do not come under the umbrella of RATES, ROADS and RUBBISH and maybe reluctantly cut office staff

12. Finally Over the last few years we have had councillors and CEO’s tell us what a privilege and an honour it is to serve our community and then race off mid term / contract as soon as a better offer comes along

Now why do the council not understand dissatisfaction by residents of Winchelsea ?

See above.

Easter Egg Basket Raffle 2016 On again this year – a major fundraiser for us to help run School’s Day. Keep a lookout for ticket sellers outside the IGA SOON. Great value for the choccy lovers in your house!

Newsletter Deliveries We had a good response to our plea for extra folks to help out with this – the first edition for the year will be out soon!

NHW ‘Gate Plates’ We have a limited number of these available – unfortunately, we had to purchase them, so they will cost you $1 each. If you are interested, and know your newsletter deliverer, ask them about the plates, or contact us through the numbers on the newsletter. These plates can be screwed or tacked onto a post or somewhere suitable. A good way to advertise that NHW is active in Winch, and to perhaps discourage ‘would be’ villains!

The new Hunt & Gather Winchelsea festival is set to become a significant date on the Victorian rural calendar, featuring regional produce, art and agriculture, while celebrating innovation in farming, manufacturing and services.

To be hosted in the Surf Coast Shire town of Winchelsea, the four-day event kicks off on Thursday 31 March, with two regional Agricultural Field Days at the magnificent Barwon Park Mansion, and culminates on Sunday 3 April with

the family-friendly Run Rabbit Run art trail and rally throughout historic Winchelsea.

On Saturday, 2 April, a public auctioneer will raise funds for the Winchelsea Uniting Church, putting under the hammer anything from chooks and geese, to second-hand furniture and farm machinery.

The only event of its kind throughout the surrounding region, from Ballarat and Warrnambool to Colac Otway and Geelong, the Field Days provide businesses and producers with an oppor tunity to showcase the latest developments

in farming machinery, equipment and technology.

More than 100 exhibitors from around the state are expected to gather in the historic grounds of Barwon Park Mansion for the Field Days, which will feature an extensive range of supplies from manufacturers and farmers, to wineries and local food producers. Cooking demonstrations from renowned local chefs, family entertainment and true country hospitality will add to the overall flavour of the occasion.

A locally-driven initiative, Hunt & Gather Winchelsea has developed

from collaboration between the community group Growing Winchelsea Inc, Surf Coast Shire Council, and the Winchelsea and District Community Bank.

According to organiser Stuart Fountain, Hunt & Gather Winchelsea is a unique mix of agriculture, art and entertainment, appealing to a wide cross-section of the community.

“This event is expected to become one of the largest annual community gatherings in the region,” said Mr Fountain. “Not only will it attract producers and traders, but across the board people will have an opportunity to enjoy locally-grown produce and locally-made art.

“Along with the Field Days, we have a massive local auction for the Uniting Church, which is something like ebay on a cricket oval, and the Run Rabbit Run art trail, which will be a great day out for families and the general community,” he added.

The Uniting Church Auction, to be held at the local cricket ground, is available to anyone who has

something to sell, with prices for items ranging from 50 cents to a thousand dollars or more. Turn up early to register, or just go along to browse and enjoy home-baked country fare.

The finale event of Hunt & Gather Winchelsea, Run Rabbit Run kicks off at 10am on Sunday, 3 April. Participants will ‘hunt’ around town for five large rabbit sculptures created by artists for the festival, then ‘gather’ afterwards for a town picnic on the banks of the Barwon River from 1pm. BYO picnic lunch or purchase a pre-prepared gourmet hamper from the Winchelsea Tea Rooms. Hop on down to the Tea Rooms for a map to join in the hunt.

Hunt & Gather Winchelsea is also part of the ‘Eat Local Month’ food and wine festival running throughout the Surf Coast and Otway hinterland.

For further information or to register for the Field Days, call organiser Stuart Fountain on 0417 160 559 or visit www.growingwinchelsea.com.au/huntgather

Switch on to SucculentsSucculents are proving their worth as house plants, in gardens and in pots because they are perfect for our dryer climate.

They come in a wide range of colours and forms and are great value in a garden, providing a sculptural touch. And they flower – and what a range of gorgeous, weird and wonderful flowers they can have. I have to admit that I have come quite late to succulents, but now that I am learning more about them and am growing them myself, I am a true convert.

‘Succulent’ describes any plant with thick fleshy leaves or stems. Think of cactus, sedum, crassula, agave, pigface, aloe, echeveria, yukka, kalanchoe, aeonium and you are thinking of succulents. To see an amazing collection of succulents from around the world, visit the Geelong Botanic Gardens where they can be found in the 21st Century garden and at the far end of the gardens near the Pelargonium Collection house.

Succulents have evolved water storage tissues which allow them to grow in situations too dry for most plants. In general, succulents like warmth, low humidity and well drained conditions. They thrive in direct light but can also adapt to low light, which makes them perfect for indoors or under a tree where it is too dry for other ground covers.

While succulents need some moisture, allow the soil to dry out fully before watering. Give frost sensitive species some protection or plant them in pots which can be brought up on to the verandah or moved to a sheltered spot. Don’t over-fertilise – just a little slow release fertiliser or a scattering of compost - treating succulents ‘mean’ will give you the best colour. In my garden, general neglect, other than a tidy up now and then, has kept my succulents (and me) very happy.

There is a succulent for every need – ground cover, clumping, tall, draping, edging, cool colours, warm colours – but, and it is a big but, make sure

that you plant them with plants that will like similar conditions. There is no point choosing drought proof plants and then causing them to rot because they get too much moisture when you water their neighbours. Raised beds will enable you to grow succulents in damper, less well-drained areas.

Mass planting in contrasting groups makes a great show of foliage and flower repetition from afar and provides detailed enjoyment close up. Sedum Autumn Joy is particularly spectacular with pink blooms in late summer that age to a bronze colour, against beautiful sage green leaves. Other gorgeous sedums are the ground cover dragons’ blood – green and maroon leaves which sends up spires of bright cerise flowers in mid-summer and sedum album, a low grower with masses of tiny white star flowers touched with shell pink. The latter two have been very popular with children planting fairy gardens, searching for smaller leaves and dainty flowers.

Pots provide lots of scope for a collection of contrasting succulents or for a celebration of one species. I have half barrels with succulents in pots in them laid out like patchwork quilts. Be creative with containers – kitchen ware, baskets, crates, terrariums – just remember the rule about good drainage and either make a drainage hole or be very careful not to over water. Planting taller succulents in containers bonsais them, making them smaller than similar ones in the garden.

You can buy special succulent potting mixes or you can make a gritty 50/50 mix of ordinary potting mix and very coarse sand, crushed rock or gravel. Succulent roots do not take in water from direct contact but absorb moisture from the air, so you need to create a medium which will have air pockets in it. Give potted succulents a drink every week or so in summer and about once a month in winter – check if it is needed first.

Once you start planting succulents, you will notice and appreciate them

everywhere and your interest will grow. I am sure that you will have as much pleasure as I have with such easy care and rewarding plants.

Happy gardening!

THINK I think it would have taken them a long time to put the flags in. I think they put them in their colours. I think there is a lot of colour.

WONDER I wonder where it is. I wonder if anyone has painted a picture of these flags. I wonder why it is just European flags.

FEEL I feel sad because there is no Australian flag. I feel happy because there is a lot of colour. I feel mixed emotion because of all the mixed shapes and colours.

Winchelsea Primary SchoolWriters of the week

Morning Melodies returns to the Winchelsea Tea Rooms on Thursday week with English Baritone, Alfred Anderson. Alfred, with a rich experience in his home country, has a voice which is a pleasant mixture of the smoothness of a Val Doonican, and the precision of Noel Coward.

Alfred has moved to Australia after a successful life as a concert performer throughout the UK, based in Rochdale in the Lakes District. Performing with his late wife in a concert party called “Set the Mood”, he graced the stage with many recitals in his home town, and in the cities in the region, Leeds,

Manchester, Liverpool, Huddersfield and Stoke-on-Trent, singing traditional English songs, and popular songs. He sang with the Council of Music in Hospitals whose patron was Prince Charles. He also sang for the Leonard Cheshire Homes, an organization who have long term residential homes throughout the UK similar to the Music in hospitals. Involvement in G&S societies was regular. He got to the position of singing at corporate functions, private engagements, such as Masonic Dinners & Ladies Evenings. He, with his wife, was a wedding singer and also sang for business & political receptions, dinners and presentations. Since arriving in Australia, he has performed with the DVS singers in Trial by Jury

and Carmina Burana, and is currently preparing to perform in the G&S Society of Victoria’s season of The Gondoliers.

Alfred has chosen a delightful array of songs next week to perform from the English tradition including “The Floral Dance”, “Linden Lea”, “The Blind Ploughman”, and “Trees”. In the mix is also a refreshing medley of Henry Mancici favourites. This is a program with few surprises, and many joys.

An event not to be missed. As always, Philomena will grace the tables with a sumptuous morning tea commencing at 10.00, with Alfred opening up at 11.00. Bookings can be made by phoning Joan MacKenzie on 5267 2075 or 0407 506119.

CWA February Meeting10th February the Winchelsea CWA met for their first meeting of the year.

As we start a new year there is much to talk about, what to do, where can we do our best….for our first meeting of the year we decided to have a fun and relaxing evening.

After our meeting we had Carly Hampshire be our Quiz Mistress and ask us Question about this great land of ours!! Katrina and Judy were the winners!!

Of course some of the ladies wanted to keep their answers a secret!!

We also talked about upcoming events, fundraising ideas and just being part of this wonderful community.

Next Thursday we are going to Colac for the General and AGM Meeting.

In March on the 9th we will be having our meeting at the Senior Citizens Rooms,,,,we would love to se you there. As it is almost Easter that will be our theme for the night, but you just need to come along and enjoy yourself.
