Roots & Roofs 2013: Success Home Repair Program Continues

Founded in 1960, Grace Missionary Baptist Churchhad two different locations on East Fifth Avenue be-fore coming to its current home at 1182 N. Sixth St. in1976. Over the churchs 53 years, most of its mem-

bers have moved out of Weinland Park, but Pastor

Kevin J. Miller says connecting with and serving theneighborhood is one of the congregations key goals

    today.

Its easy to see this goal in action: Grace Baptist offers

both fellowship and support in many ways. Heres how

    to get involved:

Moms2Beis a fun, friendly program that helps preg-nant women in zip code 43201 ensure a healthypregnancy with good food, friendships, and even asmall gift card for participation. It meets every

    Wednesday, 11 a.m.1 p.m., no registration re-quired.

Project Love offers free immunizations for childrenevery third Wednesday from 12:303 p.m., no ap-

    pointment required.

Family Dayand a Back to School Festival in Augustoffer free health screenings and kids back-to-

school supplies. (Watch for this years dates!)

Property has been purchased and work is under-way to open a thrift store and food pantry near the

church; opening is planned for this fall.

Neighbors who would like to donate clothing, food,or school supplies for these community efforts canbring them to the church on Wednesdays from 9a.m.noon or call 291-9714 to make an appoint-ment. Last, but not least: Sunday School is at 9:30

a.m. and the worship service starts at 11.

Meet Grace Baptist: 53 Years Young

Grace Missionary Baptist Treasurer and Trustee Ollie Rogers and Pastor

Kevin J. Miller at the front door of the church.

On Saturday, May 4, 138 community volunteersparticipated in the third annual Weinland ParkRoots & Roofs. More than 1,500 perennial plantsand bulbs were planted in the neighborhood atcommunity gardens, the school, park, and thehomes of 17 senior citizens. This year the civicassociation sold discounted plants and mulch, earning over $200. Participants received a free

shirt and lunch by Local Matters. See you in 2014!

The Weinland Park Collaborative has raised $350,000

to continue the Exterior Home Repair Grant Program,

which gives up to $20,000 to eligible homeowners.

The program began in 2010 and over 42 households

have received grants averaging nearly $19,000. The

    Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC)

manages the program and is reopening the application

process. Qualifying households must be single-family

or duplex owner-occupied homes. The program has

income limits. For example, a household of two musthave an annual income at or below $65,280.

Applications are available at Godman Guild. If you

have questions or want an application, call 233-4171.

Applications may be submitted in person at Godman

Guild or MORPC on June 3 between 9 a.m. and 1:30

p.m. After June 3, applications may be dropped off or

mailed to MORPC. Applicants will be considered on a

    first-come, first-served basis.

Weinland Park Biking: Lights, Camera, Action

Did you know that if you ride your bike at night youre

required to have front and back lights on your bike? Rid-

ing without lights can get you ticketed with a substantial

fine. But the civic associations Safety and Mobility Com-

mittee is here to help. It has used part of our City of Co-

lumbus safety grant to buy quality bike lights from bike

supplier Portland Design Works. | www.ridepdw.com

These lights will be available to neighbors soon. The pro-

ject also includes production this summer of a bike safe-

ty video made by and starring kids from WP!

If you'd like to be involved or just want to make sure you

get lights for your bike, please contact Chris Orban at

[email protected] (614) 557-9387 or talk to

Martin Weston on N. Fifth Street.
