School News for Senior CitizensLPS News & Events for Senior Citizens in our Community

June 2015 - Volume 6, Issue 1

As I write this, we are coming to the end of another great school year. Year-end activities, such as prom and graduation, are upon us. We are very proud of our students and staff for their work this year.

As we finish the year, there are many items going on in our district that I would like to share with you. First, our students have completed the

first year of the new state assessment. Because of proper planning by our staff, the implementation of the new test went very smoothly.

We do have issues with our new state assessment and will be sharing our thoughts with state officials. The data we collect on student performance does not really help our teachers in their daily instruction and is simply taking away too much instructional time from our students. We believe the state can collect the data they need and data that is helpful for our assessment in a much shorter time period, testing fewer students. This would allow us additional instructional time and the ability to provide more meaningful assessments that will help teachers with

their instruction.

We are also getting ready for our second phase of construction through our bond issue. Franklin, Emerson, Riley, Kennedy, Roosevelt, and Hayes will all be seeing significant renovations this summer. Look inside the Dialog for more details on the work being done.

With the retirement of 38 professional staff, we will also be doing some very important hiring for the next school year. This includes five principal positions. We hope to have the principal positions filled before the end of the school year so we will have a good transition into next year.

We continue to wrestle with reduced funds to operate our schools. While we are still very proud of the programs we offer, it is getting more difficult to maintain the quality programs we have been so proud to offer. Being down almost $20 million over the last several years creates a major challenge. We will continue to do our best to provide as many quality programs as possible for our students.

Thanks to all of you throughout our community who continue to support our schools. Our success truly is a team effort by all. I hope you have a great summer!

Finishing up another successful school year!

LPS School News for Senior Citizens June 2015

“We love you, Cooper!”

This heart-felt sentiment was shared by students in the special education center program at Churchill High School recently, as they celebrated Cooper the Super Duper’s 100th visit to students in Livonia Public Schools.

The 12-year-old Shetland Sheepdog is a certified therapy

dog with Therapy Dogs International and has become a best buddy of the students at Churchill High School and several other LPS schools during last four years, leading up to his 100th visit.

The students’ faces lit up upon Cooper’s arrival at Churchill on his special day, as he was surrounded by friendly pats on the head, hugs and even gifts and cake to mark the occasion.

“He is part of the community here,” said CHS special education center program teacher Kathy Urbanowicz. “I can see their confidence become stronger when they’re with Cooper. They can relate to him and connections are made. To them, this dog becomes their dog.”

Marking his 100th visit at Churchill was significant, said his “mom” Debbie McDermott, because his very first school visit was at Churchill back in September of 2011. Debbie is also a Churchill alumnus.

CHS center students and staff shared cake and students presented Cooper with their hand-made posters which included phrases such as “I love you, Cooper!” and “You make me smile!”

Cooper was treated to a couple of licks of cake frosting and the students were given a memento in the form of a Cooper trading card, which resembles a baseball card.

Because Cooper has completed his 100th school visit, he will also receive a Tail Waggin’ Tutor Award for his work in assisting students with their reading and academics.

“In the last six months, there has only been one dog from Michigan who earned the Tail Waggin Tutor award,” said McDermott.

She is proud of Cooper’s work with students in the center program, and in the general education classrooms at several elementary schools in LPS (Randolph, Garfield, Buchanan, Rosedale, Cooper, Roosevelt and Grant). He has even been known to spend some time with preschoolers in the district. He’s logged more than 250 volunteer hours in four school years.

McDermott is a believer in Cooper’s work with students. She has many stories of Cooper’s positive influence on young readers and students who really open up when they are with Cooper. Her motto is, “Capture their hearts, engage their minds.”

“The power of a kind, considerate dog is really quite amazing,” she said. “There are many examples of how he helps the students.”

Cooper is also very special to Debbie McDermott. He came to Debbie in 2010, when his first “mom,” Marie Vihonsky, became ill. She passed away in January 2011. Cooper is Debbie’s second therapy dog. With both dogs, she has logged more than 400 volunteer hours.

The reward is seeing the students’ light up when Cooper is around them, and watching them open up to their furry friend.
