Field day was nothing short of an uproaricus su-. Our Field day c h a i m Walt Mushagian planned and carried out a marvelous event for Ham and ran-Ham alike. The area we were canpd in was a easy drive to get to, the weather cooperated, the cmpny was qreat, the surrcxmdings were terrific, and the food m s supr (our camp cmk was Ralph W e s t and his faithful assistant and mid-watcb 80 meter phone logger Rick Wkinnq). Imagine rot having to cook (or clean up) on a camp out because you were operating; have to pinch myself to see if I'm dwamiq when I think a b u t it. mere was plenty for eveqme to do, what w i t h putting up aHd takirag dawn 'cents ard anterula, a i d nlakurg and b- q, it was a fun but twsy weekerd. l'tie basic requi-ts for field day were met, wte in a rm&e location on emergency p w e r , get lots of practice on bands/gear you don 't mnnally use, and have a heck of a good time mile your doing it. For the sixth mnsemtive year the JPL Amateur Radio Club provided cammi~tiom support for the May 2 6 h la CaMda Parade. The parade wnsisthq of approximately 100 elemnts, hcluding vintage automobiles, Eire trucks, floats, cldwns, M, youth grwrps, cyclists an3 equestrian grmps, took a little over an hour to pass through L.C. this year.

N h -tors, assistd by the 224.M reps~ter, were ~ m i b l e far P i n i n g up the parade elements along the half mile length of Co~nishon and placing than irho the line o f mrch at the pproper t h e . O t h e r duties consisted of dire&- lost participants to their l a t i o n , ~ e n t i n g parents delivering children from prkuq and -on- their cars in spots set aside for floats, locating water for the horses;, shuttling parade pa r t i c im and helpers f m start to finish line, solving the lgr i s t i c s of positirm- irq f i re , e n g h in their assigned spot once they arrived fm the wrong direction -have you ever tried to turn a 4 0 ft fire truck around in a 25 ft wide street? All was a-1ished by the JPL ~ m p , although the repater may have been a l l t t l e tired before w e were thrpugh.

?hose participating this year were: Jay Holladay WGESS, who bravely stationed himself in the middle of the entrance to Cornishrm, and pre-sorted the onslaught of arriving autos, flmts, and people, d i m - them in the general direction of their respective assembly points. I am glad to report that Jay survived. Walt Diem W46PEA, was sta- ti& at ~e entnmcs to tantern auditorium parking lot tlhere he flmnti.cally sorted the arriving vintage autos and VIPs fram the dozers of spctatolrs etc., weren't supposed to park there. The first part was fairly easy, the second past wasni t. Carl de Silveria KGGLG, w a s acmss the s t r e t E m Walt, at t h entrance ta PIS circle drive. Here, he single handedl.y tmk on the multitwle o f arriving yauth qroups, pre schmlers and hovering body guards (parents). C a r l also mmgd to supervise h t h h i s cwn and Art Z y g i e l e b a u m kids w i t h c a t lmhq sight of them even o m . A r t WMSM,, was further d m Comishon tTyj179 valiantly to line up floats in their proper order and spot them at p-ked sy t s along l?~e curb. Arts position t ~ a s quickly out- flanked and then w e m by attadcing floats, qymasts, horses and pren t s deliver- kids, all of which insisted in parkjns in the wmrq place when ever A r t had his back turned. FindLly additional m p ( s ) , Sid 3clmson WBGVWH, tms rushed to his position and m~st of the attackirag f m were +led. Ron Plcszaj WA6T!FW, was stationed at the FIS f i e ld further d m Cornishon. Ron played host to the equestrian participants and there ever trusty nmmts. Ron's mjor problem kms how to supply a f e w fast b u c k t s of water to the thirsty horses which he f m l y solved w i t h the help of friendly natives (the neighbors). M e r down Comishon was the intrepid Bob layne W6:, who had a f e w nervous rmwmts when he was suddenly attacked from the reat- by 6 large fire t r u d ~ ~ k b quickly dispatched this threat w i t h the use of hihis trusty handy talky, and rmt them padchg off towards F m t h i l l Blvd where there presence was anxious1y awaited. Once the px-ade start&, and the equestrian groups had departed northward tclwards Foothill, Bob acciderrtally steppecl. in to a business -unity! Namely, the sale of fresh l a w fertilizer: to the folks wh live along Comishon. I regret that Bobi s sa le ; were a flop. Rick r 4 S i . n ~ ~ m6M, was station& at the lover entrance to bmlshon a t &scanso Drive. B i q Rick, and his faithfully sidekick a deputy sheriff, did an admiral job of preventing one of our more serious problem of last year, the 9Onpl-1 la te prat t3lyiq ta get l ittle Irmatrude

her -fire group before parade start, scattering terrified entrants the entire length of Cmmishon :n the process. Last, but cer- ta inly not least, was Ralph WPst NGYM, riding radio shotgun in the stat:ion wagon used to kanqmrt various entrants f m W d hve to Comishm. Ralph reported the natives to be friendly and no trmbles along the trail. m i l e Paul -in m D , acted as a spectator/reprter, occasionally ch- in rm the EL=% t o seport progress of the parade. In addition to aul, three hams from the fhsmta Valley Radio C l c 5 came wer to help as spec- tator/reporters, after f h i s h i n g up the YMR 10K m. mey w e r e Jdm Ehret W 6 M , Steve m t

and John Lyons WA-. ?he parade rolled along @te smoothly this year so o w reporters didn't have much to do, emqt w t e .

Ely Wrjq thanks to a l l who pitched in and made my thing rn off SO smoothly. See you again nExt year! Sid WBGVWH
