Facilities Launches Work Manager App
10 | 31 | 2016 A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
Department O43 Facilities Maintenance recently launched a new app called SAP Work Manager. The new app has been assisting crews with tracking work status and closing out maintenance tickets while working in the field.
The launch of the Work Manager app is the first step in a series of improvements that the Facilities Division is planning to take.
“It’s a good thing,” said O43 Maintenance Supervisor Bill Berger. “Now the crews can look up what parts they need and close out tickets without having to come back into the shop, which has proven to help the back log
of work we have.”
The Work Manager app was discovered by Maintenance Engineering Manager Tom Bales (O41), who has spent the past eight years researching new ways to leverage mobile technology in the Facilities Division. Bales discovered that the app’s appeal was the usability of the program itself, which features a straightforward interface that is easy to use.
O43 Maintenance Technician Bass Beasley was one of the first employees to use the Work Manager app. “It gives technicians the ability to access information about their jobs with the touch of a stylus,” said Beasley.
Thanks to the generosity of employees in the workplace, United Way is able to help thousands of people in our community. In 2015, shipbuilders helped fund over 190 agencies supported by the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula.
With only four days left to give, United Way Coordinators are down in the trenches raising awareness throughout the yard.
If you have not already done so, please join the thousands of shipbuilders that support the United Way. NNS’ campaign ends this Friday, Nov. 4. For additional information, contact your departmental coordinator or visit the United Way website on MyNNS.
Hats Off to the United Way

First Lady Michelle Obama and the U.S. Navy commissioned the newest Virginia-class submarine, USS Illinois (SSN 786), during a ceremony held in Groton, Connecticut on Saturday. During the event, Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin quoted Supply Chain Planning Analyst Sharonda Steverson as he described what it’s like to work at NNS.
“One of our shipbuilders is Sharonda Steverson, who buys the material and equipment for Virginia-class submarines. She sums it up best when describing what it’s like to work at the shipyard. She says: ‘It’s the place where you’re made.’ For many shipbuilders, including myself, this holds true. It’s the place where we’ve grown up. It’s the place that allows us to earn an honest living, raise a family, and make a difference. It’s the place where we’ve learned what the word quality really means.”

In support of the 2016 American Heart Association Heart Walk, sponsored by Newport News Shipbuilding, the CVN 79 Program hosted its first annual Football Passing Challenge and Super Bowl Competition Oct. 11 through Oct. 19. The events were held in the North Yard’s Platen 18, under the new weather buffer zone, during lunch times for all three shifts, and employees were encouraged to compete by throwing three complete passes into The Apprentice School Football Team net targets. Over 150 shipbuilders participated in the wild card rounds and 54 shipbuilders made it to the divisional playoff round.
Shaun Woroneski (X18) and Terrence Scott (X36) were the two contestants who competed in the final Super Bowl Challenge event, with Woroneski taking the title of CVN 79 Super Bowl Football Passer Champion.
“More ideas are already being evaluated to make CVN 79 Super Bowl II even better,” said CVN Heart Walk Team Captain Rhonda Pearman, administrative assistant to Mike Shawcross, vice president of John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) Program. “I want to encourage employees to practice up in the offseason, maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle, and come out next year in support of the American Heart Association.”
