J I M LONGTHORNE WA6KPW - Our family Christmas extension - Each year it's the three days a f t e r Christmas spent in an Ecumenical Retreat Facility in Santa Barbara. It avoids the post Christmas let down and allows space and time f o r the real s p i r i t of Christmas to mellow into our l i v e s thru relaxation, fellowship, and reflection.

1986 Inpu t from Danette & Kerry Er i ckson N6IRC & N6DSG

We don't rush t h e season b u t enjoy o u r tree until " L i t t l e Christmas", the Epiphany January 6th. This seems to be a t r a d i t i o n t h a t is dying out as trees go up t h e day after Thanksgiving and down, the day after Christmas. Our gifts don't appear until Christmas rnorninq from Santa who always gets n o t e s , cookies and a carrot for h i s r e indee r . Every year some of his white cotton fur gets caught in the chimney, t oo ! After Christmas Eve Services, N 6 D S G starts to assemble t h e toys. One year, a f t e r the children were asleep, he started to assemble a toy k i t c h e n . It had 141 pieces and screws. It took him all night, but he was all "smiles" when the children came in at 6 AM!

BOB LAYNE - WGLTC - Since coming out to California o u r Christmas/New Year t r a d i t i o n has become a yearly pilgrimaqe back to the 51st. s ta te , Brooklyn, New Yark, to visit my wife's Mother and a whole h o s t of other Italian relatives.

It's a great t h r i l l f o r us to return to the "homeland" and see a l l t h e Laws, in - laws , and a few Outlaws. As the token Irishman, I have begun to be accepted. T h i s is helped, of course, by t h e fact t h a t I have Learned sufficient "street" Italian that I know what they are saying about me - and they know that I know.

My wife and h e r Mother make Stroofelies - (phonetic spelling because no one back there is sure how to spell it!) - I call them Italian popcorn; you can't e a t j u s t one. There's no real recipe, but I promise to watch t h i s year and w r i t e what they use and what they do. The

end product is f l u f f y deep f r i e d dough puffs; coated w i t h honey and spr ink led with those little t i n y , round cake decorations.

The apwroach of Christmas Day involves shopping excursions to A&S (Abraham and Strauss) and a f e w o ther stores in downtown Brooklyn, and preparation for the celebration of The Eve w i t h a host of t r a d i t i o n a l I t a l i a n seafood dishes ( squid , octopus. . . ) .

(Continued from previous page - BOB LAYNE WGLTC - Christmas Day involves re la t ives coming to visit and going to visit relat ives - and more food. With Christmas over , in add i t ion to t r y i n g to lose the pounds p u t on by Christmas, preparation now begins for N e w Year's Eve. T h i s is almost always celebrated at my wife's o l d e s t brother's place in Staten Island. This is a pretty n o i s y affair with loud music, loud talking and another ton of food!

It's o u r belief that our participation in this event has become welcomed because the folks celebrate the New Year's arrival w i t h l o t s of toasting and hoopola; followed 3 hours later by a celebration in ou r honor, of California's New Year with more of t h e same.

I usually recuperate sufficiently to see a l i t t l e of t h e Rose Parade and beg in the r i t u a l of t r y i n s to watch every footba-1 game on T . V .

We return back home to California with the requirement to lose weight and get ready fo r the next traditional visit in about 350 days.

COOK1 E RECIPE OR LEAVING CARROTS FOR SANTA'S REINDEER OR

WALKS TO CHURCH AT MIDNIGHT OR GOING UP TO THE SNOW EACH YEAR

HOLIDAY TRADITEONS

WHAT DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY DO FOR THE HOLIDAYS?

BOB POLANSKP NbET - Our family spends as much time as possible, at Christmas, in a mountain cabin at Big Bear. We decorate a large Christmas tree, set up the electric train, throw snowballs, hike around the town. and keep a cheery fire going in the fireplace. Santa always visits on Christmas Eve. We've wen been known to consume cups of hot-buttered-runt! Merry Christmas to all. Santa Claus. N6ET.

FAE AND JIM LUMSDEN-WAbMYJ - Making peanut brittle or candy canes in 10 pound batches and reading "Night Before Christmas" to the kids and knowing that ' I . . . and to a11 a goadnight." means just that.

KAY GOODWIN KF6CW - We always have a miniature "choir" on the mantel, made of iced chocate choir boys, given to us when our 34 year old was less than a year old. The chocolate gets more hollow each year, but the icing holds up splendidly! On out tree are silver ornaments handmade in a little Bavarian village, to which we made a special t r i p on one o f the Helios journeys in 1971. One year f found (at s sale) a lot of "spoiled" personalized brass tree ornaments. Each year we make a little wish for the unknown "Baby Susiel', "Cynthia and John", 'Wy best friend Joe", e tc . as we put them on our tree. "They're like family, now." We always attend the Christmas concert at our Church--a carol sing with choir and orchestra on Christmas Eve, and the Midnight New Year's Eve Service--usually having supper beforehand with nei8hborhood friends. At least we do if we're not otherwise engaged that night. Happy Holidays, everybody! Oh--we hang Christmas stockings (I made them in 1951 and our daughter's was marked"?" until she was about fourteen) in the dining room, and greens over the doorways, and play a wonderful record of famous German choirs singing Christmas carols, given us by Karl Voge, whom same may remember from Herios days. One member of the family is always elected Sanea Christmas morning. and hands out gifts one at a time. We open them one at a time, in turns, so everybody can ah and ah, and we make ridiculous guesses as to what's in each package. There are always packages for our daughter's cat, and any expected dinner guests, and we have photos of every tree for the the last 38 years, as well as of people around the Christmas table. If the weather's nice. we walk around the neighborhood, greeting friends as they do the same, after the g i f t unwrapping. It's fun just thinking about it!

KERRY AND DANETTE ERICKSON NGDSG & N6ZRC - Non Alcoholic Pink Punch

2 bottles white grape juice 1 2602. bottle cranberry juice 2 small cans frozen pink lemonade 2 2402. bottles club soda (thawed but not reconstituted) Combine juices and lemonade. Put ice in punch bowl. Add Club soda. (Serves 35) This recipe is frm the PTA Council's Alcohol Education Program.

Christmas Cutout Cookies

3% cups s i f t e d flour 1 tsp baking powder tsp. salt 314 cup butter or margarine 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla Beat butter with sugar until fluffy l i g h t . Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture (flour, baking powder and salt), 1/3 at a time, to make a stiff dough. Chill, roll out, cut and bake on ungreased cookie sheets 10 minutes at 350'. Makes 4 dozen cookies.

We have a centerpiece that has five large candles. On the four -sunday evenings leading up to Christmas, w e light a candle for each of the Sundays. We w i l l then spend at a (minimum) an hour reflecting on the family life over the past year, sing carols, and participate in a family prayer. On Christmas Eve, we l fght a l l five candles, and spend the evening singing and basically enjoying each other. Xt is a moment of happiness and sharing that is very special to us.

Now that Matthew is 3% and Michael will be 18 on December 26th. I find that our traditions have stayed the same wer the years. Last year we took turns getting Matthew out of the center of the tree (no easy task) but t h i s year he's in charge of the village and ice skaters, skiers, etc. that I have under the tree. He rearranges it at least 6 times each day. Michael i s in charge of our new beagle puppfes (born Thanksgiving Day) so that's keeping him busy chasing 6 puppies around. No new traditions t o report but I have some holiday recfpes for you. Enjoy your holidays and have the best 1988 that anyone has wer dreamed of - We love you and wish you happiness and health. 88% Eileen

A Christmas Tradition

One of out family traditlona that has lasted with the growing children is a very easy one to do and yet the memories linger a lifetime.

The nlgM before Christmas-the last thing before going to bed--the kids put out a plate of cookies, a couple of carrots (for the reindeer of course), and a glass of milk. But most important a letter

% to Santa-Wishing him a safe journey and a Merry Christmas and a final plea for one or two special Christmas gifts.

# On Christmas morning along with the proverbial stocking check the kids dash to see if the cookies and milk are gone and look for the reindeer teeth marks left on a tidbit of carrot, and rsading Santa's note of thanks and good wishes trdy gives them a Christmas Merno~y.
