As most of you have n o t i d , on July 23 it was necessary to rexlove our closed -tier, WKIl3JR (224.08 MHz) f m service for repairs. Once again a nearby lightniw strike had caused failures in a n h r of prts assochted with the autopatch. Even hardy relays did mt escape without W g e . S e a r s the hits always caw in thraqh the telephone L h , nwer thmqh the arrtenna! This time, B i l l Wood W6M (the original builder) offered to not only restare the machine to normal -tiat, but tn install pratective devices to limit f u m e m e f m lightning surges. W i t h such an offer, how could we refuse?

While B i l l had the r ig jn his lab i n Bars- he also decided to tweak up the rf portions of the transmitter, receiver, an3 duplexer for tip-top operation. After achieving better than spec in ev? masaxable pram*, B i l l has just about minced us that the FP part of the m t e r i s really in pretty good shape and doesn't have to be replaced by new Motorola strips (althocqh w e m y want to replace the logic with more modern tech- n i q u e in the mar future.) B i l l then decided t o put it in -tion into a &my Load and look for the "mnster of the mesa" - the p l y intermod we were - havjsrg before the lightning. Nothing for about a we& unti l he tried a mobile duplexer i n s t ~ ~ d of the 6-cavity N o r t h Shore duplexer - then it b p n . B i L l traced the monster to a wrdition- a l ly stable Anpo stage which a t times oscil- lated, causirg strange desense and noises. ?lo speed along the repairs, Mew furnished B i l l with his spare FM-76 fmm which B i L l took the PA w. The new PA turned out t o be stable. mnblenr solved.

Tnen Bill, pursuing h i s penchant for perfection, found he oould lower sans phase noise on the tnmmitted siw (hiss) by grounding the transmit crystal. An accident happened when soldering a

w i r e t o the crystal can - it used a solder seal t o hold the crystal under va-. Solder- the w i n g w i r e to the can mltd the hermetic seal, a d the vaclnrm sucked the solder irrto the can spraying it on the quartz, which char@ the operatug frequmcy. Walt Diem WA6PEA1 was contacted for supprt to &-order a repla- - ~ i & , thankr to hw effo*, was delivered in a few days. It went right on frequency, arad B i l l delivered it back to the site on August 23. It was put: back in service by a work patty consisting of Bill WFW, Sid WEEAM3 arad Carl, KG6LI;. Since this was not the f i r s t time the machjne had to be repaired because of lightning m g e , a new Polypha- telephone line y e p r o t w ~ m procured by ~ e r v was, of course, In- stalled before B i l l d d let us put the machine back on the air! After so much lightning trouble, B i l l west& that we might have received pinhole damage from wks across the dielectric of the antenna or cmx fmm i n d u e d charges. FYquerrtly these pinholes include cafwn stxw.k through the d i e l e b r i c , which can cause reztification, intennod and other strange p r a b l a ~ , particularly in a

LLLI'.IT; S E P T E M B E R 7 9Si5 repeater application wfiere the high-- trans- m i t t e r is in use a t the same time in the same antenna as the receiver. Tnis frquently happens with near hits on mountaintops, and the dqradation is irsidims. Haxl to troubleshoot, tm. B!z=t to charage than. So, B i l l donated and delivered a virgin Sta t iomster (which had never been violated by a lightnirag storm,) and Sid a-ed for new coax.

When the mpater was first put back on the air it was attached tm the virgin statiomster and new coax. U n e y , the m t e r reared i t s head almost immediately, lending m e d m to the bdieef that the nwmter definitely lived soanewhere a t the site, but not in the repeater or antenna itself. A swap to the (higher) Superstatiomster arrtenna sharply red& the intermod problem. Clearly, we still. haven't identifid the monster! mt for the t h e being, and in the present configuration, he seeris relatively hamiless.

For t h se of you +&at retain xsne p r a f i c i q in the pr- language of ham radio ( 'Worse m e i i ) yw w i l l fird that the m t e r m IDs as WIEAJR instead of W B G I l 3 p P T (which took longer than neBdd;) the autopatch still identifies as WKIEA/A. Since there is n m only one ''dit" d i f f e m the two, you do have to lis- harder to tell. which mode it is in. 'Ihe ID t* was adj- so that the I D disrupts m e m t i o n s less freqmmtly. The autopatch phoneline level is now 10 db L o u d e r , and a rimher af other tweaks were made by B i l l to inp,me the quality of the machine. Ymill like it. TbZ really helps.

Gn S e w 1, another work party (led by Sid w i t h help from his pole-climbing-expert son Kirk, KAGRKX, C a r l KG=, a d Chuck KGNF, ) successfully r e p l a d the cmx to the higher antenna w i t h Belden 9913, s i g n i f i m t l y improved the w i m g system, and remwed old corroded hulks of bysore antennas that could cause intermod f m rusty joints. Early reports indicate the radiated signal is s&at bet-ter than with the old max: reoeption { w i a l l y desense) has yet to be eva lw td . We don't have all the answers yet, but we are mkhg p-s !
