The Scuttlebutt The Newsletter of the Korean War & Korea Defense Vet-erans of Lake County (FL), Inc., CID169, Charter 1998 www.cid169.kwva.org P.O. Box 491428, Leesburg, FL 34749-1428
Vol. 18, No. 7 July 2015
O n a very hot July 21 night, the South Korean
Collegiate baseball team again made an appear-
ance at Pat Thomas Stadium on Dixie Avenue,
Leesburg. The game was great, as are the 169 excel-
lent photos provided by Bob Peters.
As they did last July, the Chapter Color Guard looked
sharp as they presented colors. Above, from left: Joel
Briggs, DJ Lynch, Ron Psonak, and Wally Jones.
They shared the Color
Guard duties with the
Thomas R. Norris Battal-
ion of the U.S. Naval Sea
Cadet Corps of Fruitland
Park.
Bill Shumaker presented
Chapter Pins to the South
Korean baseball team
while Frank Keaser did
likewise to the Leesburg
Lightning players (see
photos in continuing column).
Frank, as he also did last year, threw out the first
pitch; the year’s practice did Frank well as he was
able to get it close enough so the catcher could pull it
in this year (see photo in continuing column). See
Baseball, continued page 7

C hapter 169 is not only the
largest in the State, it’s the
best in the State!
We have asked several State and
Association Officials to look into
the 90 percent rule that we have
been fighting for years.
I asked Brian Welke, one of our
“new” members (reinstated), to
look into it and see what could be
done.
Within a week he showed me a no-
tice from IRS that was updated 25
March 2015 which states: “At least
75 percent of its members must be
past or present members of the
USAF (United States Armed Forc-
es).
It appears that we have no 90 per-
cent rule problem.
I contacted James Fisher of the
KWVA Association Board, and he
asked me to send him the infor-
mation. After reading it he agreed
that the problem has been solved.
The last issue of the Graybeards
had a lot of information about his
phone contacts with IRS and not
one word from them about this no-
tice.
So, when you see Brian, tell him
thanks.
The Korean Baseball team was
here last Tuesday and lost to the
Leesburg Lightning 3-2. Our Color
Guard presented the Colors. Frank
Keaser and Bill Shumaker passed
out our Chapter Pins to each player
on both teams. Frank also threw
out the first pitch; it was not a
strike but the catcher caught it.
Monday the 27th we were at both
Memorial Parks, Leesburg and The
Villages. Our own Al Schuetz was
the Key Note Speaker in the Villag-
es. I hope most of our members
attended one of the two locations
We still need volunteers for the
Tell America Fund Drives at the
local stores. It is always the same
members every drive, and some are
working double shifts because
there are not enough volunteers.
The shifts are only three hours and
the time goes by fast (unless you
are doing a double shift) and it’s a
great way to meet and greet and
get new members.
The VA cell phone man was at our
meeting and I think 15 more mem-
bers ordered new phones. Do we
need him back?
Which reminds me, if you are try-
ing to call me please use my home
number first. I don’t have the cell
phone on if I’m home and if you
leave a message on the cell phone I
don’t get it.
If you are having trouble with your
phone talk to Joel, he can help you.
I am very proud of our Chapter, we
are not only the largest Chapter in
the State but the BEST. But, we
always can improve
Art
President’s Column by Art Iversen
A s of June 2015,
it is estimated that 7,850 of
our fellow G.I.s still lie silent in the
foreboding landscape of North Ko-
rea. What is our Chapter doing
about it? What is KWVA doing
about it? What are you doing about
it? We are preparing Chapter let-
ters to our elected representatives
asking them what they are doing
about bringing these heroes home.
We will invite them to speak to us
to explain what they are doing. I
plan to personally contact them as
well. The Chapter has motivated
the Association and the Depart-
ment to action. And we plan to
publicize the fact that there are still
7,850 MIAs with ceremonies on
Sept. 18, National POW/MIA day.
More later; Please help. TJThiel

M embership is still our big story. We continue to
gain new members, and we have not lost any
members in recent months. Let’s keep it that way!
We have gained four new members since the last
Scuttlebutt; three at the Senior Center and one at the
Eisenhower Center.
I anticipate that we will really gain many more new
members at the Eisenhower Center next month as
Brittany Van Heyningen, Senior reporter of The Vil-
lages Daily Sun is doing a story about the Chapter be-
fore the next meeting. Also, I hope to do a “Boy Spy”
article before Eddie Ko’s appearance in October.
Now let me introduce our four new members:
The first two I’m presenting as
a couple—Jack Kennedy on
the left, and below him is Sha-
ron Wernli. Jack served in
Korean waters with the US Na-
vy 1951-52.
Sharon joined us as an Associ-
ate member, which of course
we really welcome to our
Chapter.
If you haven't guessed by now,
Jack and Sharon are married,
to each other, they live on Big
Oak Lane in Wildwood.
Next is Andy Whippple,
who served in Korea 1951-52
with the USAF; Andy is a Navy
retiree. He and Judy live on
San Diego St in The Villages.
The fourth new member is Laura Brown for whom
we still do not have a photograph. Laura is also join-
ing as an Associate member, and lives on N. Bobwhite
Rd, in Wildwood. She shows that her father served in
Korea with the 24th Infantry Division. I should also
tell you that Laura is the daughter of Doreen Zettle-
moyer, and I suspect that Doreen had a persuasive
hand not only with Laura, but Jack and Sharon as
well. Thank you Doreen!
Yes, we are just one shy of the Century Mark, 100,
which we said we had publically at our July 22 Senior
Center meeting; however, it turns out that indeed we
are short the needed paperwork for that 100th mem-
ber. He will be on board next time for sure.
Ninety-nine places us in a three-chapter tie for #7
rank nationwide—see below. (I was wrong about #5)
Membership now ‘99’ by Tom Thiel, Secretary and Membership Manager
Welcome Sharon, Laura, Jack and Andy! We hope you will be pleased with your new ‘family’!
Special Guests at our July 22
Member Meeting:
Maxine Parker, President, Department of Flori-
da, and
Brittany Van Heyningen, Senior reporter of The
Villages Daily Sun.
LakeFrontTV. Bob Peters reported that LFTV
has been showing its presence in Chapter activities. This
includes the recent baseball game, the Vietnam Veter-
ans travelling wall, and will be there Monday to record
the events at Veterans Memorial Park Leesburg.
Page 4
Vol. 18, No. 7 July 2015 The Scuttlebutt
T he meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. July
18 by President Iversen. Colors were presented,
the Pledge of Allegiance rendered, our MIA/POW Re-
membrance conducted and an opening prayer deliv-
ered.
President Iverson introduced guests, and urged mem-
bers to participate in either of two JULY 27 at 10:00
AM Korean War Armistice events at either Veterans
Memorial Park in the Villages or at Veterans Memori-
al Park Leesburg; the Chapter will have full Color
Guards at both events.
Iversen then installed members Brian Welke and
Pat O'Hanlon, who had become members last
month, and new member Andy Whipple who joined
today.
He urged members to become active in the Tell Amer-
ica and Honor Guard activities of the chapter and in-
vited members to attend the July 21 ballgame be-
tween Korean Collegiate All Stars and Leesburg Light-
ing.
Since the scheduled speaker was late, several guest
speakers were asked to make short presentations.
First was John
Schuch , who is with
The Villages’ Commem-
orative Air Force (CAF),
a Texas-based non-
profit organization ded-
icated to preserving and
showing historical air-
craft at airshows pri-
marily throughout the
U.S. and Canada. John described how they restore
and fly aircraft from by-gone years. They are currently
flying a fifty-year old WWII bomber to air shows
around the country.
Pat O'Hanlon then
spoke a bit about his
career in the Counter
Intelligence field, both
for The U.S. State De-
partment and Army
Intelligence, and his
own personal role in
catching and exposing
spies both here in the
United States and Korea. Pat will be the featured
speaker for our September 19 meeting.
The scheduled speaker,
David Booth, found-
er of Combat Veterans
to Careers, which has
an office in the Villag-
es, was next to speak.
David gave some dis-
heartening Veteran
statistics—1 out of 5 are
homeless, 22 commit suicide each day, only 20 per-
cent use their GI Benefits. There are over 200,000 in
need of assistance of some sort.
The Careers For Combat Veterans provides Career
Workshops where they help develop veterans’ resume
skills, and follow-up after applying for a position.
They offer community support for vets by providing
360 degree support case management and are a na-
tional outreach group. He then provided examples of
local success in the Villages and surrounding area.
The next Eisenhower Center meeting is August 15;
The Chapter’s Tell America program that goes to Lake
County high and middle schools will make a demon-
stration of the presentations they make.

Nephew links up with Disabled 7th ID Korean War Vet uncle.
O n a recent New England trip , Bob Peters
(standing) paid a visit to his disabled Uncle
Tony Peters in a New York Veterans Home.
As you know, Bob recently signed Tony as a member
of Chapter 169.
Bob learned that his uncle served in the 7th Infantry
Division during the Frozen Chosin battle where the
Division suffered over 2,000 casualties to the Chi-
nese in battling their way south-east to the port of
Hungnam. There, it along with the 1st Marine Divi-
sion and HooJung’s ancestors, were all evacuated by
sea.
Tony, we are happy to have both you and your Neph-
ew in CID169!

Its still not too late for you
W e still have not set a date for the UCF VHP
interviewers to come to Lake County; I will
contact UCF’s Tiffany Rivera as soon as I finish the
Scuttlebutt. But I will try to delay it for our snowbirds
to return—snowbirds please let me know.
Tiffany would like to have a “Lake Veterans History
Day.” As you can see from the next page, The Lake
Sentinel has already published one article.
President Iversen says we can obtain a room at the
Eisenhower Center, now I will need to determine
whether another will be needed at the Leesburg Li-
brary.
Jimmy Corbet, Lynch, Reynolds, Schuetz, Corscad-
den, Stover, Vanas and Wood, Jr. are scheduled for
the first interviews this fall. Wally Jones, Gene
Zender, Joel Briggs and Bob Peters have added their
names to the list as well.
IF YOU ARE ON THIS LIST AND HAVE NOT REG-
ISTERED AT

Tell America Fund Drives are our Chapter’s main
means of surviving, of maintaining a highly active and
visual program in our area, and of leading Florida’s
and most of the nation’s Chapters. We call them Tell
America drives because they enable us to present our
Tell America programs to schools and elsewhere, and
because in conducting the drives we also inform the
public about the Korean War.
We have taken in almost $12,000 so far this year. But
there are two drives still to go: Sept. 19 at La Plaza
Grande Winn-Dixie, and Oct. 17 at the Walmart on
466. I am certain that more members are needed to
complete the teams, and so urge you to make your-
self available for a three-hour stint. Call Wally Jones
and/or Joel Briggs to schedule when you can help. It
is easy to do, yes you can sit if you need to, but do
it—please!

I am part of an American Flag. I have proudly flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly, the Sun and the
Winds have caused me to be tattered and torn.
Please carry me as a reminder that our veterans should never be forgotten. We owe our free-
dom to their sacrifices.

D oreen Zettlemoyer and several other members are
making small favors to use at Fund Raisers and oth-
er events. The favors consist of a star from a well-worn
flag on one side, and a poem on the other (see below).
These are enclosed in small plastic poly sealable bags.
The group needs your old tattered flags. They will care-
fully cut the stars out of the flags, and have the flag re-
mains ceremoniously burned. Please bring your old flags
to Chapter meetings, or contact Doreen Zettlemoyer at
