Mere Quacks Original Cartoon by Mike Webb

Mike Webb has generously donated to the Community Centre the original of his Mere Quacks cartoon that appeared in the Diss Express on the Friday before our Music on the Meadow. Our intention was to auction it at the Music on the Meadow event however, things did not quite go as planned and many people disappeared just before the event finished. Consequently we have decided to auction the cartoon in the Community Centre immediately after the fireworks have finished on Sunday 6th November. However if you are unable to be there on 6th November and are interested in the cartoon you may leave a bid in a SEALED envelope with Helen Thorburn at Kerridge Cottage Lows Lane or Pauline Garrod 42 Rose Lane. The envelopes will not be opened until immediately before the auction and the auctioneer will bid for you up to your bid price. Please mark envelope Mere Quacks Auction 6th November and remember to enclose your name and contact details.

FIREWORKS SUNDAY 6TH NOVEMBER

6.00pm for 6.30pm

his is a Family Firework Night at Palgrave Community Centre. Free entry but there will be a bucket collection to pay for the fireworks. There will be

lovely warming refreshments including hot potatoes, curry, bacon rolls and soup from 6.00pm. The bar will be open and there will also be the fun of a Tombola. Bring the whole family but, please, for safety’s sake, don’t bring your own fireworks. On this evening also we will be auctioning an original Mike Webb cartoon – it is the one which was in the Diss Express on the weekend of our Music on the Meadow in August. If you can’t be at Firework Night you can leave a sealed bid with any one of our committee and they will be opened at the time of the auction. Come and join us on 6th November.

Diversion (and extension) of Permissive Path on Millway Lane

You may have noticed that the path just beyond Long’s Farm on Millway Lane has been diverted. It now begins at the sloping field entrance just beyond the Kadesh Farm, rejoining the old path further downhill. This Permissive Path (it is not a Right of Way) was created about 20 years ago and has been well-used and much-appreciated by people in the village and beyond. At the same time as re-routing it, Mr and Mrs McClintock have extended the Permissive Path right around the field (see map opposite). It makes a lovely new walk giving views over the Waveney Valley to Diss. Measured from the beginning of Millway Lane, the circular walk takes about half an hour and is a little over a mile long. Why not try it? Janet Lockett 11.10.11

PALGRAVE LOCAL HISTORY GROUP

As many of you will know Ken Nockles is leading a group of people who are interested in looking at the history of Palgrave with the aim of publishing a book, the sales of which will be used to support the community and local activities. As part of this we would like to investigate the history of local houses. Palgrave is fortunate in having a number of listed buildings, and basic information can be obtained from English Heritage on the age of the

building and particular architectural styles. We would, however, like to have more knowledge of the social history of the village that is represented not only by the listed buildings but also other houses within the Palgrave boundary. For example, was your house previously a shop or pub? Have you a newer house that was built on land that was used by the village for any significant purpose. Did someone of local (or perhaps national) interest previously live in your house, or on the land on which your house was later built? If any of you have more information that you would like to share about your house or other houses within the village we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please contact either Ian Davies at [email protected] tel: 651592 or Caron Townsend at [email protected] tel: 641567.

Can You Help?

The group of villagers have got together to produce a history of Palgrave. So far they have met twice and have decided to carry out research on a number of areas of interest. These areas are:

Old maps, Pubs, Shops, Trade and Industry, The Church, The School,

Buildings, Palgrave in the Wars, Farms, People, Prehistoric Palgrave, Census data.

If you think you might be able to contribute to this research we would be delighted to hear from you. Perhaps you have old photographs, documents or just memories to share. If so please contact Ken (01379 651599) and he will put you in touch with the appropriate group member. Alternatively, come along to our next meeting on Friday 4th November at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre.

Palgrave Christmas Cards and Calendars are now on sale! We have two sets of Christmas cards – one set showing Palgrave Church in the snow (5 different cards for ₤3) and the other of the 2010 Advent Windows (6 different cards for ₤3.50). All proceeds of card sales will go to St. Peter’s Palgrave. The Palgrave Calendar (₤5.50), showing 12 views of our beautiful village, is an ideal present for all your family, friends, acquaintances and clients. Proceeds from the calendar will be divided between St. Peter’s Church, Palgrave and the Palgrave and District Community Centre. To buy cards or calendars, please contact Heribert or Kathryn Westerveld (644007), or come along to the Christmas Fair Coffee Morning on 19th November, where they will be on sale. Advent Windows Last year, for the first time, Palgrave had an Advent Calendar with real windows and the very pretty decorated windows can be seen on the set of Christmas cards that have been produced this year. A window will be revealed every day between 1st and 24th December and will then stay ‘open’ until 2nd January. Each window can be decorated using whatever materials you like and the theme is up to you, as long as it is related to Advent, Christmas, or perhaps simply a wintry theme. Last year, we had sparkly stars, snowflakes, 5 gold rings, Christmas trees, the 3 kings following the star, to mention just a few. We can help if you

need some ideas to get you started! Each decorated window should ideally be lit up so that it can be enjoyed during the evening, as well as in daytime.

A number of people are already planning their advent window....but we need more if we are to have 24 windows so that we can go ahead! If you, your children or grandchildren would like to take part, please contact Kathryn Westerveld by 10th November on 644007 or email [email protected].

PALGRAVE JAZZ RECORD CLUB

USE IT OR LOSE IT The Palgrave Jazz Record Club has held monthly meetings in the Community Centre for over twenty years. Members assemble on the second Monday of the month to hear talks on the wide range of styles and musicians that have evolved over the music’s 100 years plus history. Advertising has attracted new members but the number of joiners has not offset the natural wastage of existing members. Membership has now dropped to a level that threatens the viability of the club and new blood is desperately needed to help us meet our costs. New members have the opportunity to determine club policy by presenting talks on their areas of interest or expertise. If you are interested in joining the existing band of friendly members, please ring Bob Smith on 01379 890657 for further information or just turn up at the Centre. The next meeting is on November 14th.

Palgrave Gardening and Social Group

3rd October Meeting On a gloriously warm and sunny morning the Group met in fields along Millway Lane to hear Paul Read speak with huge authority on the fruit and old orchards of Suffolk. We saw old and new fruit trees in Palgrave and then moved on to Thrandeston where we were conducted around a very old orchard containing, amongst many other trees, a truly enormous old pear and a huge white filbert nut tree. Finally Paul took the Group to two plots of his land (surviving strips from mediaeval times) where he and Jen have planted more than 100 fruit trees ranging from old varieties of apples and pears through to medlars and quinces. It was a highly informative morning and a thoroughly enjoyable one. The next meeting will be held at Sheila True’s house at 10.15am on Monday 7th November. Mr. Julian Flood, an interesting and lively man recently retired from speaking on Ramblers and Scramblers / climbing plants, will be giving a talk on clematis with slides. Anyone who might be interested in joining the Group should contact Sheila on 643393. Tip of the Month November is the ideal month to plant tulip bulbs. Thought for the Month Song Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away; Lengthen night and shorten day; Every leaf speaks bliss to me Fluttering from the autumn tree. I shall smile when wreaths of snow Blossom where the rose should grow; I shall sing when night's decay Ushers in a drearier day. Emily Bronte

PALGRAVE WALKING GROUP

Our group, which now regularly attracts over 20 walkers, meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month leaving Palgrave Community Centre at 9.45 a.m. Everyone is welcome to join our friendly group but it is regretted that dogs cannot be allowed on our walks. Additionally Palgrave Walking Group, or its walk leaders, cannot be held liable for any injury sustained whilst on any walk they organise. If you would like further details please contact Brian Beecroft. Telephone 01379 642208.

November 2011

Tuesday 8th November 2011

Bryan Green will lead us on a challenging circular walk of around 5 miles in the Burston area, on a route that includes 9 stiles and 2 ploughed fields. Muddy conditions can be expected on the walk at this time of the year and stout footwear is recommended. After the walk we will go to a local public house for refreshments.

Tuesday 22nd November 2011

The village of Gislingham will be the starting point for a pleasant and easy 4¼ mile circular walk to be lead by Jane Humphery. After passing through St. Mary’s churchyard we will head towards Wickham Street on field and woodland paths before crossing the railway line via 2 stiles on our return journey. After the walk we will go to the nearby Railway Tavern at Mellis for drinks.

If you wish to join us on either of these walks please be at Palgrave Community Centre car park ready to leave for the starting point at 9.45 a.m.

A THANK YOU FROM PAT SIMMS The Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning took place on the last morning of September, but in Palgrave on the first afternoon in October we held a Tea Party in aid of the same charity. I am so pleased to announce that with thanks to all those people who generously provided prizes, helped during the afternoon, baked cakes, spent their money etc. I am sending off £481 which I am thrilled about. Last year, on a very wet day, we made £375 – this year, with the warmest October on record – when we worried that everyone would be out enjoying the sunshine, we beat last year’s figure. Thank you everyone

Queens Diamond Jubilee Event 2012

Many of you will be aware that in 2012 Her Majesty the Queen will celebrate 60 years on the throne. We are hoping to celebrate this on Sunday 3rd June with a village event. We hope this will involve the School, the Church, the Community Centre, the Garden Group and many villagers from Palgrave. We welcome any suggestions as to what form the event should follow and hope that people will come forward and volunteer to help with organising. Please contact Pat Simms (643629), Pauline Garrod (07554945682) or Helen Thorburn (651749) or email [email protected]

Local suppliers and farm shops will provide a fabulous display of food for the Christmas table while festive decorations, home made cakes and gifts, wreaths and crafts of all kinds will be on show. Wortham school is getting involved with carols from the children and there will be music from Johnny Ling and his antique organ collection. Hot mince pies, sausages and chestnuts will tempt your taste buds while Father Christmas has promised to appear in style!

Like many residents in Suffolk, I was very concerned to learn about the difficult financial situation facing Ipswich Hospital last week, after Government figures revealed that the hospital has accumulated a debt of £45 million. Both working as a doctor in the frontline of the NHS and now as your local MP, I know how important local NHS health care services are to our communities in Suffolk, which is why I was particularly concerned at the possible challenge posed to frontline services as a result of the debt. One of the key reasons accounting for the current financial situation at Ipswich Hospital was the building of the Garrett Anderson Centre in 2008 as part of a private finance initiative scheme (PFI).These schemes were used by the previous Goverment to fund the building of schools and hospitals by private contractors, but many of the PFI contracts were badly managed or negotiated. Whilst the Garrett Anderson Centre has been highly beneficial to Ipswich Hospital, we need to make sure that all future public sector buildings provide good value for money for both the taxpayer and patients alike. Along with my Suffolk colleagues, I shall be doing all that I can to help Ipswich Hospital put its finances back on a stable footing. As both a hospital doctor and your local MP, I have a unique understanding of the main health care pressures facing both Suffolk and the country. The single biggest challenge facing our health service is how to meet both the human and the financial cost of looking after our growing elderly population. Not only are people living longer – which is a good thing - but many of our older people, particularly in our rural communities, are now living with multiple medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis, which means we will need more community-focussed care and far greater integration between local Social Services and the NHS if we are to properly look after older people. That is why I am pleased that the Government has committed to establishing a local Health Care and Wellbeing Board in Suffolk, which will bring together local NHS, public health and social care commissioners to promote more integrated care and support for our elderly people. The Coalition’s NHS reforms are a step in the right direction, as they will start to bring the greater joined up thinking and improved integration of community focussed healthcare services that are needed in Suffolk. We all owe our brave Armed Forces a huge debt of gratitude for the work they carry out on our behalf in conflicts overseas, which is why I was delighted to visit Wattisham airfield with my colleague Tim Yeo MP to meet with members of the 4 Regiment Army Air Corps. The conflicts in Afghanistan, and more recently in Libya, have brought home to many in Suffolk the daily sacrifices made by British servicemen and women for their country, and it is always important to recognise the bravery and courage of those who have served and continue to serve in our Armed Forces.
