Mardi Gras Safety TipsMardi Gras can be a time lled with fun and
excitement. It is a time to really let go before
getting back to business and buckling down for
the dreaded nal exams. However, nothing ruins
fun more than a careless accident. The
following are some general safety tips that you
can implement this Mardi Gras season to help
keep everyone safe! Travel in groups to and from parking spots and be
aware of your surroundings. Leave nothing of value in
plain sight in your car.
Carry valuables (I.D, keys, cash) in your front pocket. This puts pickpockets at a disadvantage. Avoid carrying
bulky purses and dont wear expensive jewelry.
Store the phone number of a local cab company in yourcell phone and carry enough cash to cover a cab ride.
The drinking age is 21 and please be safe if you choose
to drink. Set a reasonable limit for yourself and
alternate with water to stay hydrated.
Check the weather forecast. It can be very warm or itcan be very cold. Whether or not you costume, it is a
day outdoors, so plan accordingly: wear comfortable
shoes, sunscreen, and layered clothing.
Bring a plastic or cloth bag with handles with you to
hold all of the trinkets that you catch.
Respect the police. Our ocers are working overtime
and are deserving of your cooperation and compliance.
It is very easy to get arrested for being overly drunk or
obnoxious. Have fun but be smart.
Some Residents are parents or are put in charge o
small children. Here are some safety tips
specically to keep those little ones safe! If you don't have children please keep an eye out for th
little ones around you. They would like to have as good
time as you.
First and foremost have a pre-designated meeting placein the event that someone in your group gets lost. It is a
good idea to have children carry some sort of
identication card that includes their name, address,
telephone number, and prearranged meeting place.
Make sure your children know that if they get lost to n
the nearest law enforcement ocer and tell them theirnames, parents names, and the designated meeting
place of the family.
Avoid alcohol consumption. It may impair yourjudgment and limit your ability to care for your childre
Make sure your children know to stay with you and awafrom strangers.
Make sure to remind your children to stay out of thestreet, particularly during parades when it is very
tempting to follow marching bands and the colorful
oats.
Remind your children to be careful when reaching dowto pick up throws. It is a better idea to put a foot on the
trinket and pick it up when it is safe. Otherwise, they
may get their ngers smashed when someone
accidentally steps on their ngers as they reach to pick
up throws.
