ATHLETIC STAFF

Tommy MCCLELLANDAthletic Director

Tommy McClelland was named athletic director at McNeese State on March 19, 2008. Prior to being named Athletic Director, McClelland served as Interim Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director of Internal A"airs. In his short time at McNeese McClelland has been quick out of the gate. He started the “Partner with the Pokes” program that provides a smaller, more attractive sponsorship package for local small businesses. On top of the “Partner with the Pokes” program, McClelland has raised over $2.8 million in private donations since April of 2007 and was instrumental in increasing corporate sponsorships over $750,000, while securing new clients and multi-year sponsorships.

He also planned and helped implement a multi-city summer tour, the “Cowboy Round-Up Tour.” #e Cowboy Round-Up tour is a two week period in June where coaches, administrators and other department sta" travel to various cities in Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. Fans have the opportunity to meet with coaches and administrators to talk about Cowboy and Cowgirl athletics. McClelland was also responsible for increasing football season ticket sales in 2008 for the then highest total in school history to 8,008 and then topped that at 8,035 in 2009. In addition, he was instrumental in setting single game attendance records in Volleyball, So$ball, Soccer and Women’s Basketball. McClelland is not just limited to selling tickets. He devised a plan to resurrect the “M” Club for former student-athletes. He negotiated a new syndicated radio network for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. Included in that deal was the !rst ever radio station that was solely dedicated to broadcasting women’s basketball. McClelland also re-negotiated football’s TV replay contract from a one station deal to broadcasting games on three di"erent stations and the internet. One of the main goals for McClelland was to improve the life of the student-athletes and increase the fans experience. #e most e"ective way to accomplish both goals is to improve athletic facilities. In his short time as Athletic Director, McClelland has overseen the completion of:

A combined total of over $11 million dollars in facility renovation and new construction has been made since 2007. During his tenure as Athletic Director, McNeese has won the Southland Conference football championship (2007, 2009), Southland Conference Soccer tournament (2006) and regular season championship (2007), Southland Conference So$ball Tournament (2010), the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Regular Season (2011) and the Southland Conference Women’s Regular Season (2011) and the State Farm Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament (2011). In 2011, under McClelland’s leadership, McNeese State hosted the First Round of the NIT postseason tournament as they hosted ACC member Boston College live on ESPNU. Even though McNeese State has had a tremendous amount of success in athletics, McClelland prides himself on building character in his student-athletes. In four of the past !ve years, McNeese State has led the Southland Conference with student-athletes being named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In addition McClelland has guided the resurgence of the department’s APR success. Since taking over, McNeese State has gone from four teams with or above the required .925 APR rating to 13, and projections have all 16 at or above that number. Since the beginning of his tenure, the community service hours performed by the MSU student-athletes have triple to over 2,000 each year. In everything that McClelland preaches, one word always comes to the forefront...Championships. “Championships in the classroom, on the !eld/court and in life. #at is what mo-tivates me to become the athletics administrator I desire to be.” McClelland holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from Northwestern State where he was a football and track standout. #e native of Basile, LA., served as a graduate assistant at Northwestern State in athletics and also worked at the Southland Conference o%ce as an administrative intern, assisting with championship events. McClelland is also a 2012 graduate of the Executive Program of the Sports Management Institute and attended instruction at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Busi-ness School and the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. McClelland is married to the former Jessica Stokes of Garrison, Texas. #ey have two sons, Lawson and Grayson. #ey reside in Lake Charles.
