2009 OuTLOOk First year head coach Natalie Poole returns to her alma mater to take over a program she once played for. Poole also served as an assistant coach of the Cowgirls before earning her first collegiate head coaching job seven years ago at Georgia Southern. Poole inherits a team that posted a 23-36 overall record and a 14-15 Southland Conference record and advanced to the SLC tournament in 2008. Eight starters return from last season and this year’s team has a balance of upperclassmen as well as underclassmen who have the same vision. The upperclassmen are expected to provide leadership and maturity while the underclassmen are young but are expected to be difference makers. The Cowgirls have a challenging season ahead of them but one that will be exciting. “As an alumnus of this program, I have a genuine interest in the continued improvement of this program. I would like to be a part of helping this team accomplish things they never even imagined,” said head coach Natalie Poole. Returning pitchers Bethany Stefinsky and Michelle LaVoie will be looked upon to lead the pitching staff. Both players saw plenty of playing time and are the top two returning pitchers. The Cowgirls also have relievers in sophomores Katie Shumaker and Candace Duhon. Stefinsky led the Cowgirls with 130 strikeouts in 25 appearances while LaVoie led the staff with 10 victories and a 3.85 ERA. New to the pitching staff is rookie Tiffany Denham. Denham is capable of making a difference this season in the circle for the Cowgirls. Behind the plate, the Cowgirls have senior Rachel King who is a tremendous leader and is expected to be a solid defender as well as an offensive threat. King returns as the Cowgirls’ top hitter with a .292 batting average last season. Sophomore Whitney Corbello is also expected to see time behind the plate as well as in the infield. Corbello hit .244 last season with 11 RBI’s and 10 walks and led the team with a .983 fielding percent while seeing action behind the plate and first base. Junior Tiffany Ritchie, freshman Dani Price and Corbello will all battle for the starting role at third base. Ritchie led the Cowgirls with 129 assists. Price and Corbello will also battle for shortstop along with returning shortstop Molly Guidry. Guidry ended her rookie season with a .241 batting average and led the team with 25 stolen bases . Guidry was second on the team with a .433 slugging percent, 32 runs scored and tied for a team high six home runs. Senior Holly Long is a great vocal leader and a hard worker. Long had a .951 fielding percent with only nine errors last season.

“We have versatile athletes and could move these ladies around the infield and find many successful combinations,” said Poole. At first base, we expect to see Temple Junior College All-American Heather Mosser. LaVoie and Corbello are also expected to see playing time at first. LaVoie tied for a team high RBI’s with 28. She produced a .239 batting average with 27 hits, four doubles, one triple and one home run. “We are filled with talent in the infield. We are a couple of athletes deep at each position and that keeps the performance levels up.” The outfield is led by junior Liz Morvant. Morvant has a good arm and range. Morvant led the team with five sacrifice bunts and was second on the team with a .857 stolen base percent after

stealing 12 bases. Sophomore Lindsay Langner also has a good arm and speed, returns after leading the team with 204 plate appearances and 23 walks. She was second on the team with 48 hits and had a .940 fielding percent. Rookie Claire Terracina is stepping up in the outfield and will battle for playing time. Junior Chelsea Jones and freshmen April Fryar and Kelly Lindley will also battle for playing time. “All are smart players who read the ball extremely well. This is a tight knit group who work well together.” Coach Poole stated that successful hitting and consistent

strong defense will be a key factor in determining who will earn a starting position. The Cowgirls’ non-conference schedule is one of the toughest in recent years. The Cowgirls will face six teams that were ranked in the final USA Today/NFCA poll and begin their season on the road at defending National Champion Arizona State. The Cowgirls will also take part in the Sun Devils’ tournament that weekend. The Cowgirls will take part in two other regular season tournament’s including the UL-Lafayette and the Marriott Houston Classic tournaments. “All of the tournaments have respectable, competitive teams participating in them. Our mid-week games will be against talented programs, which we hope will keep us working on getting better for Southland Conference play.” The Cowgirls’ first 21 games of the season are on the road including three tournaments and the first two SLC series at Northwestern State and Texas State. The other ranked teams the Cowgirls will face are no. 2 Texas A&M, no. 6 UL-Lafayette, no. 11 Stanford, no. 13 Houston and no. 18 LSU. “We will play the first month of our schedule on the road, which may be tiring but will help us toughen up early in the season. We need to get tough and mature quick due to the start of conference play at the end of February. I believe that being on the road and playing tough competition is going to help us get there.”

Dr. Robert HebertPresident In 1938, Louisiana founded McNeese State University, then known as the Lake

Charles Junior College, as a division of Louisiana State University. The opening session of the college began on September 11, 1939. The following fall, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned South-west Louisiana educator and the first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950 McNeese became a four-year college in its own right and came under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education. Finally, in 1970, McNeese State University became the official name of the school. The University provides opportunities for continuing education in support of its mission to value lifelong learning. As a member of the University of Louisiana System and a selective admissions institution, McNeese offers degrees through six academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science. McNeese’s student body comprises over 8,500 students from throughout Louisiana, the United States, and approximately 50 countries. McNeese’s athletic programs are NCAA-certified for competition at I-AA and I-A levels. The soccer team won the school's first ever conference tournament title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana features 68 buildings on 500 acres dotted with live oak trees and azalea bushes. The McNeese community continues to use the three original structures - Kaufman Hall, Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Francis G. Bulber Auditorium. Bulber Auditorium, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. McNeese State University upholds a long tradition of service to the Southwest Louisiana community and the nation. The University’s motto of “Excellence with a Personal Touch” extends beyond the classroom to offering help to others in times of need. During World War II, the campus was the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers, an extensive military exercise to prepare American soldiers for battle. In 1957, the McNeese community gave aid and comfort to the victims of Hurricane Audrey and served as the National Guard’s base of rescue operations. McNeese provided shelter for New Orleans residents and university students fleeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. McNeese faced one of its greatest challenges when Hurricane Rita struck in the fall that same year. The storm caused devastating damage to campus facilities and infrastructure. The recovery effort after Hurricane Rita showed the community of Southwest Louisiana the high caliber of McNeese faculty, staff, and students in their commitment to complete the semester and move forward in support of the core values of academic excellence, student success, fiscal responsibility, and university/community alliances.

“Academics is our no. 1 priority in softball. Our student-athletes are extremely lucky to attend an institution that provdes them with a quality, well rounded education. On top of that, they do it with a personal touch. As an alumni myself, it is easy for me to promote this institution to prospective student-athletes because I experienced it myself. I received not only an undergraduate degree from McNeese, but also a master’s degree. I did, and our athletes are receiving a tremendous education from McNeese State which will lead to a bright future for each of them.”
