It was the second straight

year for McNeese to play in a postsea-son event. In 2010-11, McNeese hosted Boston College in the first round of the NIT and lost 82-64. Cowboy head coach Dave Sim-mons, the SLC and Louisiana coach of the year in 2011, posted his 100th ca-

reer coaching victory during the season when his team beat Sacramento State earlier in the year...he has an 87-99 won-lost record at McNeese (sixth sea-son) and is 114-128 overall... he led Mc-Neese to a 21-12 record and to the SLC title in 2010-11. McNeese losses all-American Pat-rick Richard but returns its next two top scorers in Dontae Cannon (11.5 ppg) and Jeremie Mitchell (10.8 ppg). Mitch-ell ranked third in the conference with 2.2 three-point goals made per game while Cannon ranked second in the league in minutes played (34.9) and fourth in free throw shooting (.800, 72 of 90). Overall, McNeese will return three starters and seven lettermen. Those returning accounted for 57 percent of the teams scoring last season and 61 percent of the minutes played. Despite the loss of Richard, the 2012-13 season appears to be a reloading team for Mc-Neese. Mitchell, a 6-3, 180-pound senior guard from Monroe, led the team in scoring six times last season including three 20-point scoring games where he

2012-13 MCNEESE STATE COWBOYSFront Row: Brandon Regis, Jeremie Mitchell, Athletic Trainer Brendan Abbey, Assistant Coach Patrick Haynes, Head Coach Dave Simmons, Assistant Coach David Dumars, Assistant Coach Steve Welch, Student Coach Preston David, Dontae Cannon, Shaun Johnson.Back Row: Manager Jeremy Williams, Ledrick Eackles, Keelan Garrett, Pete Kpan, Jordan Wells, Austin Lewis, Craig McFerrin, Desharick Guidry, Adrian Fields, Kevin Hardy, Manager Eric Willis, Manager Joe Richey.

cNeese Cowboys Basketball

6 www.McNeeseSports.com

tied his career-high against Louisiana College, Central Arkansas and Texas-Arlington. Cannon, a 6-1, 168-pound senior guard from Alexandria, led the team in scoring four times last season, includ-ing a career-high of 22 points in a home game against Stephen F. Austin in the middle of a eight-game winning streak. The Cowboys will look to regain the services of Craig McFerrin, a 6-7, 230 pound sophomore forward who was lost after the Jan. 29 game against Central Arkansas due to a shoulder separation. McFerrin averaged 4.4 points and 3.2 re-bounds in 17 games last season. Also, sophomore Desharick Guidry (6-5, 200) started 12 of the last 14 games of the season as a true freshman and scored in double-figures in eight of those. Sophomore point guard Kevin Hardy (6-2, 180) averaged 13 minutes

of playing time a game as a freshman last year and sank 47.3 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from 3-point range. Hardy ranked third on the team in field goal shooting , was fourth in as-sists and fifth in steals. In the offseason, McNeese signed a couple of highly touted big men in Jordan Wells, a 6-7, 250 pound forward from Little Cypress-Mauriceville HS in Orange, Texas, and Austin Lewis, a 6-8, 215 pound post out of Westfield HS in Houston. Wells could have an immediate im-pact for the Cowboys in 2012-13. He earned District 20-AAAA Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named to the Orange Leader All-Area first team after he averaged 12.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. The Cowboys will have a challeng-ing non-conference schedule that in-

cludes road games at LSU (Nov. 13), at Ole Miss (Nov. 20), at Texas Tech (Dec. 16), and to top it off, at North Carolina (Dec. 22). McNeese Will play host to two in-state rivals Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 8 and Simmons alma mater in Louisiana Tech on Dec. 12. Other home non-conference games include the sea-son opener against Louisiana College on Nov. 9, Centenary on Nov. 27 and Texas-Tyler on Dec. 3.

2012-13 MCN...
