The Charles Kuehn Weight Room at the Jack Doland Field House was outfitted by Life Fitness Company and Hammer Strength Company who made the 8,000 square foot room a showcase weight facility. Weights are painted in platinum and blue and there are 16 Mondo enlayed platforms for heavy weight work, one of only eight schools in the nation to have this.

The weight room also includes: 16 multi-purpose racks, 80,000 pounds of weights (McNeese logo on the weights), nine 52-inch flat screen television sets, mirrors all the way around, two treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stationary bike and a $12,000 surround sound system donated by Scott Bailey and Bailey Audio. A 12-foot McNeese logo sets off the room from the center floor. The facility is named in honor of McNeese State’s first football all-American who is pictured above.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: McNeese will field an exciting young team for its 2013 championship campaign. Eleven new Cowgirls will join the team. The Cowgirls will look to seniors, Callie Allbright, Johna Germany, and Megan Snelling for leadership and experience.

SCHEDULE: McNeese has a great home schedule that features six non-conference home games and six conference home games.

Key non-conference home matches include Texas State and Louisiana Tech in town on the same weekend. The Cowgirls will be tested in their only non-conference road games of the season as they travel to take on 2012 NCAA Tournament participants in North Texas and Baylor.

Key Southland Conference home matches include Southeastern Louisiana, Sam Houston State, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Incarnate Word, and Abilene Christian.

McNeese has qualified for 11 Southland Conference Tournament appearances and will play host to the conference tournament for the third time since 2008.

NEWCOMERS: The Cowgirls will feature a very balanced incoming class of new players. Eleven young ladies will join the team. Each is expected to have the opportunity to contribute right away to the success of this competitive program.

RETURNERS: McNeese will return fifteen players from the 2012 squad that qualified for last year’s Southland Conference Tournament. Six of these ladies can be classified as returning starters and all have contributed to the recent

success of the program. Even though this is considered a young team, it is also a team that is full of experience.

FORWARDS: The Cowgirls have a staple of attack minded players to field across its front line. This will be an attack minded group of young ladies that enjoy going to goal and pressing high up the field. The front line includes returner Chelsea Beaubouef, transfer Jordan Beasley, and newcomers KK Danhauser, Brooke Dusek, Kayla Goedicke, and Taylor Heaton.

MIDFIELDERS: The base of the Cowgirls’ success has always been predicated on its midfield play. This will be a ball control oriented group that is able to play both sides of the ball. The midfield is the engine that drives the train and this line will be full of high work rate players. This talented group of players includes returners Callie Allbright, Johna Germany, Tori Lasiter, Krista Steibeiser who will be joined by Savannah LaRicci, Hannah Sutherland and Kendal Vardell.

DEFENDERS: The backline will be the most experienced line for McNeese. The line is chalk full of players that are great defenders, but also have the ability to join play in the attacking third of the pitch. This line will be anchored by Sarah Bricker, Michelle Petrarca, and Megan Snelling. The outside will feature Haley Lyons and Amanda Denton along with the return of Cheyenne Ganley and Kelsie Greenough. Allison Northcutt’s experience will be joined by Kaylin Peery and Emily Silva.

GOALKEEPERS: The Cowgirls have three multi-talented goalkeepers in Maggie Marks, Lauren Sestak, and Annie Bravenec. Each possesses a strong knowledge of the game beyond just shot blocking. They also do an excellent job of controlling the box and initiating the attack.

Success is not something new to Savoie and McNeese soccer. His Cowgirls have consistently attracted some of the top talent in the Southland Conference. Benefiting from developing young and talented players under his direction, McNeese has qualified for nine Southland Conference Tournaments under his direction.

Savoie was named the program’s first coach in 1996. His teams improved each season during his tenure through 1999. McNeese posted an overall winning record in conference play during that time. He guided the program to three consecutive Southland Conference Tournament appearances, leading his 1999 team to a second place finish in the league’s regular season. Savoie returned to McNeese in 2003 to bring notoriety back to the program. Since then, McNeese has returned to the Southland Conference Tournament in six of the last nine seasons and has played in the championship game three of the last six years. Savoie was named the 2007 Southland Conference Coach of the Year and Louisiana Coach of the Year in 2006. Savoie is the program’s winningest coach with 89 career victories, but the accolades for success do not stop here. Savoie has coached 51 All-Conference performers including the 2008 (Kamryn Koch) and 1999 (Joy Keating) SLC “Players of the Year”. Koch is also a two-time SLC Student-Athlete

of the Year (2007, 2008), two-time Louisiana “Player of the Year” (2007, 2008) and McNeese State’s “Athlete of the Year” for the 2008-09 season. Savoie continues to coach the 2011 (Sarah LaLanne) Louisiana “Freshman of the Year” and the 2010 Louisiana “Freshman of the Year” in Johna Germany. Savoie also coached Alana Clark, the 2007 Louisiana “Freshman of the Year”. Nineteen players have made the SLC All-Tournament Team during Savoie’s tenure. The program led the league with five All-Tournament selections in 2006 and Koch garnered Tournament MVP honors that year. McNeese has had 17 All-Louisiana selections with Savoie at the helm. Program success is not just limited to the soccer field. McNeese Soccer led the Southland Conference in 2006 with five student-athletes selected to the All-Academic Team. The team annually ranks amongst the highest of all team sports at McNeese for academic performance and consistently maintains a GPA above 3.0. Four soccer athletes have been named to the District VI Capital One Academic

Bruce HempHillAthletic Director

Bruce Hemphill, former associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming and assistant to the athletics director at the University of North Carolina, was named McNeese State athletics director on Aug. 15. He is the 9th athletics director in McNeese history. “It is rare to have one candidate pull head and shoulders away from all applicants so early in the search process,” McNeese President Dr. Philip Williams said. “Bruce is a unique find and meets every

criteria that we were seeking in an athletics director. “He understands the role athletics plays in the larger university environment and he understands the difficulty we face with the athletic budget and the importance of increasing revenue through private sources and auxiliary means,” Williams said. “I am deeply honored and excited to be given the responsibility to lead the athletics department at this great university,” Hemphill said. “I plan to immerse myself in the history of McNeese State University and McNeese athletics and to meet with as many people as possible to determine what is good for McNeese.” The Sulphur, La., native has 24 years administrative experience at the collegiate and high school levels. He supervised 10 of 17 programs offered at a major Division 1 university and was responsible for budget oversight, game operations, facilities, personnel, compliance, team travel and recruiting. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Louisiana State University where he was a three-year letterman in football and won All-Academic Southeast Conference honors at wide receiver. His professional experience began at LSU where he was a graduate assistant and assistant football coach. In 1984, after serving as the supervisor for health and physi-cal education for the Louisiana Department of Education, he returned to collegiate athletics and served for two years as an assistant football coach at Louisiana Tech University. In 1987 he became the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University. From 1989-1990 he served as the assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of South Carolina. He joined the athletics department staff at the University of North Carolina in 1990 and served eight years as assistant to the athletics director and director of recruiting. From 1999-2003 he was associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming. In 2003 he returned to North Carolina and accepted a position as athletics director at a 4A high school, the largest classification in the state.

Quotes from colleagues about Bruce Hemphill: “McNeese has hired the perfect fit in Bruce Hemphill. He is from Southwest Louisiana and he will bring the community together around McNeese athletics. Bruce understands what it takes to build a successful Division I athletics program. He has exceptional people skills and he is a great leader and motivator. He is a fundraiser and he will build support for the program. Bruce is a professional and kind of person McNeese needs. He is a terrific choice!”- Lee Moon, Director of Athletics - University of North Florida;Former Athletics Director - University of Wyoming “McNeese hit a home run with Bruce Hemphill! A great plus for Bruce is that he is from Louisiana, played football at LSU and worked at LSU and Louisiana Tech. He knows what it takes to build a successful program and he will lead the McNeese athletics department in the right direction. I have known Bruce since 1982 and our paths have crossed several times. He has held a wide range of positions in collegiate athletics from recruiting to administrative and he knows how to get things done. Bruce understands the role that athletics plays in the overall success of the university. He is a people person and he will do a great job with fundraising and moving the McNeese athletics department forward. He is without a doubt the best choice for the McNeese athletics director!”- Carl Torbush, Head Football Coach - East Tennessee State University;Former Head Football Coach - University of North Carolina “What a tremendous opportunity for Bruce. Bruce has a wealth of experience at a lot of different levels in athletics. He has great integrity and loyalty. I know he’s very excited about being the athletics director at McNeese, with his ties to South Louisiana this is a perfect fit.”- Mack Brown, Head Football Coach - University of Texas;Former Head Football Coach - University of North Carolina

“Bruce is an excellent choice to lead McNeese athletics. He is a ‘can do’ guy and during his time at Wyoming I was impressed with his professionalism, people skills and positive outlook. He has an effective public presence and was very engaged with fundraising. Bruce will build support for McNeese State University and McNeese athletics.”- Dr. Philip Dubois, Chancellor - University of North Carolina Charlotte;Former President - University of Wyoming

In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates a half-century of the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions.

Commemorating its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 14 member universities in four states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its five decades of existence.

The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed the addition of Oral Roberts University in 2012-13, marking the league’s first entry into the state of Oklahoma. Also, on July 1, 2013, the Southland welcomed four additional members: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of

Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and the University of New Orleans. An original Southland member, Abilene Christian rejoins the league as one

of the most decorated athletic programs in NCAA history, and the addition of Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and New Orleans gives the Southland a regular competitive presence in the key metropolitan areas of Houston, San Antonio and New Orleans. Southland cities encompass approximately 14.5 million people, and seven of its television markets rank among the top 100 in the U.S.

All told, the membership of the Southland encompasses nearly 140,000 current students and an alumni base of nearly 800,000. Famous alums from current Southland Conference schools include former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), Major League Baseball star Wade Miley (Southeastern Louisiana), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and track and field Olympians Kenta Bell (Northwestern State), and Bobby Morrow and Billy Olson (both Abilene Christian).

Other notable alums from current members include Grammy Award-winning musicians Frank Ocean (New Orleans), Don Henley and Rodney Crowell (both Stephen F. Austin), and Ronnie Dunn (Abilene Christian), television personality and actress Ellen DeGeneres (New Orleans), current NFL standouts Lardarius Webb (Nicholls State), Terrence McGee (Northwestern State), and Daniel Manning (Abilene Christian), professional golfers Shawn Stefani and Chris Stroud (both Lamar) and Colin Montgomerie (HBU), award-winning filmmaker Richard Linklater (Sam Houston State), American Idol winner Kris Allen (Central Arkansas), NFL Hall of Famer Jackie Harris (Northwestern State), former NFL standouts Bobby Hebert (Northwestern State), Gary Barbaro (Nicholls State), Wilbert Montgomery (Abilene Christian) and Gary Reasons (Northwestern State), former MLB stars Darryl Hamilton (Nicholls State) and Kevin Millar (Lamar), NCAA football coach Charlie Strong (Central Arkansas), TV personality Kathie Lee Gifford (Oral Roberts), actors John Larroquette (New Orleans), and Ricardo Chavira and Jesse Borrego (both UIW) and NFL coaching legend O.A. “Bum” Phillips (Lamar and Stephen F. Austin).

The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. The Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiated in 2005-06 and named after the former Stephen F. Austin athletic director, properly recognizes accomplishments off the court for a male and female student-athlete. Also, student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 are honored on the Southland’s annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner’s Honor Roll. A record 979 student-athletes appeared on the honor roll following the 2012 spring semester, and total of 1,545 student-athletes earned a spot on the honor roll at the end of the fall and spring semesters during the 2012-13 academic year.

While successful on the fields and courts, the Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes.

The conference continues to make great strides in the classroom. During the last seven years, no other Division I conference has improved its Academic Progress Rate as well as the Southland Conference has. In fact, in 2009-10, the Southland ranked 10th among the 31 Division I leagues in men’s basketball APR. The academic progress the league has shown ultimately leads to higher graduation rates for our student-athletes.

In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities.
