This year’s the X Factor win-ner’s single will be in aid of children’s charity Together for Short Lives. Through its part-nership with Together for Short Lives, local charity Chestnut Tree House will benefi t from some of the proceeds raised.

The two X Factor fi nalists will perform their prospective win-ner’s single live during the X Factor’s spectacular fi nal at the SSE Wembley Arena. The song will be available to download im-mediately after the X Factor win-ner is crowned on the Sunday, December 14. The CD single will be in stores on Wednesday, De-cember 17.

Syco will donate 100 per cent of its profi ts from the sale of each CD single and download and also from streaming to Together for Short Lives. This is expected to be at least £1 for each CD and 20p for each download.

Simon Cowell said: “I have worked with this charity for many years and I’m delighted that the winner’s single sales

will help families who are going through unthinkably diffi cult times. Together for Short Lives is such an inspiring and important charity which supports children all over the country.”

Barbara Gelb, CEO of Together for Short Lives said: “Our part-nership with the X Factor con-tinues to be transformational. The money raised will make a real diff erence to local services, like children’s hospices, that de-liver incredible care to children and families, helping them to make the most of their precious time together.”

Linda Perry, director of chil-dren’s services for Chestnut Tree House, said: “We are delighted to be benefi tting from this wonder-ful and exciting project. Chest-nut Tree House provide special-ist palliative care services to 300 children and young people aged 0 - 19 with life-shortening and life-threatening illnesses in East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes.”

Salome Tirado and Liam Harris, year eight students at Tanbridge House School in Horsham, ex-perienced a taste of their dream employment on Tuesday 25th No-vember when they joined Execu-tive Chef, Lewis Hamblet, at Sus-sex’s exclusive South Lodge Hotel.

The day was part of the school’s Ambassadors Programme, which is designed to give young students a real ‘try before you buy’ experi-ence with a one day placement at their dream employment, follow-ing research that indicated 80% of people in the UK regret their career choices.

Both Salome and Liam enjoyed a fantastic day learning about the world of culinary employment with a schedule full of kitchen work-shops and delicious tasting ses-sions. The pair were also able to ask chef Lewis about his experience as successful chef and manager of the renowned 5 star South Lodge Hotel, which boasts chefs such as Mas-terchef winner, Steven Edwards.

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved and satisfi ed the pupils’ hunger to learn more about becoming chefs once they are old-er and complete their education at Tanbridge House.

Student Liam Harris commented: “I had a great day visiting South Lodge Hotel and working alongside Lewis in the kitchen for the day. For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a chef, and so get-ting to see how a restaurant kitchen works was such a cool opportunity. I can’t wait to carry on gaining ex-perience and hope to become a chef myself once I’m older!”

Jules White, Head Teacher at Tan-bridge House School, added: “Our students had a superb time learn-ing the rules of running a kitchen alongside Lewis at the South Lodge Hotel. We created the Ambassadors Programme to help students make vital choices about their future careers and it appears to have ce-mented their passion for becoming successful chefs once completing education. We would like to thank Lewis for all of his help and advice in providing Liam and Salome with such a worthwhile opportunity.”

A great escape from Steyning Grammar School saw 200 Year 13 students released for a day of fun-draising, with the money raised going to the NSPCC in support of their national campaign to ensure ‘Every Childhood Is Worth Fight-ing For’.

In advance of the big day, the Sixth Form College Charity Com-mittee kicked off their fund rais-ing by offering a car valet service to staff earlier in the week. Members of staff were quick to book in their cars for a wash and polish admin-istered whilst student on-lookers enjoyed the spectacle and were able to purchase hot pizza from the Pizza Oven Van.

The annual fundraising event started early on Friday with a hearty breakfast kindly donated by our in-house catering depart-ment. The £1.50 charge for break-fast went straight into the NSPCC appeal. Students were then locked in the jails, after which they broke out and were cheered on by fellow students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The convicts made off in a collection of brightly decorated vehicles includ-ing large tractors and trailers, 4x4s, scaffolding lorries, pick-up trucks, a cement mixer – and even a boat. Tracy Bravo, Community Fundrais-ing Manager for Sussex NSPCC, was overwhelmed by the effort made and generosity of the students.

The convicts escaped and went on

the run to Brighton, Hove, Shore-ham, Southwick, Crawley, Lancing, Brighton, Storrington, Henfield, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Swan Walk at Horsham, and finally Horsham town centre, stopping on route to also collect at Tooveys Auc-tion House, Old Barn Nurseries and Sainsburys at Lyons Farm. Students also visited our Lower School site, the local Primary Schools; Steyning Primary, Upper Beeding Primary School, Jolesfield, Partridge Green together with Rydon Intermediate where they received a tremendous reception from the children.

All students carried NSPCC col-lecting boxes and were finally recaptured at the Bandstand in Horsham. Sixth Form College mu-sicians played as the students were rounded up by their jailors.

The total raised so far stands at £6,000, to be officially confirmed by the NSPCC. Assistant head-teacher, Mrs Randall expressed how proud the staff and parents were of the Year 13 students who had been tremendous ambassadors for their chosen charity and the school in the wider community.

The School and students would also like to thank Horsham District Council for allowing them to host the event and for their assistance with arrangements for parking of the vehicles, and C & L coaches who very kindly donated the use of a coach for the event.

Christmas is almost here and eve-ryone is getting into the Christmas spirit in Swan Walk shopping cen-tre, Horsham.

The decorations are up, and many Christmas shoppers may have no-ticed the snowman display on the mosaic in the shopping centre.

Swan Walk have been running a competition in which a lucky shop-per could win a £500 shopping spree in the centre by snapping a selfie with the snowman.

The competition closed on Decem-ber 6, and there have been 83 entries on the Swan Walk Facebook page ranging from the young to the old.

The lucky winner was 5-year-old Molly Smith. Swan Walk centre manager, Gil Buchanan said: “We have really had some great fun with this competition and our singing snowman remains a real hit with customers of all ages. Congratula-tions to our winner, I hope you en-joy spending the prize money in the centre this Christmas.”

The photos can be still be viewed online at www.facebook.com/SwanWalkHorsham and we have printed a selection in this week’s edition of The District Post.

Horsham’s town centre, with its great choice of eateries, shops and wide variety of markets is a bus-tling hub at the best of times, but add in the magic of Christmas and the town becomes a real celebra-tion of all things festive.

Horsham District Council has in-vited all local carol singing groups to perform around the Christmas tree from 1st December until Christmas and many have already signed up to take the opportunity to add to the festive feel.

Christmas shopping in Horsham can be an enjoyable and leisurely experience thanks to its many in-dependent shops offering unique inspiration for presents and the plentiful cafes and tea rooms to relax and reflect on the purchases that need to be made.

In the town’s historic Carfax, it’s all about wonderful markets with the “Best of British” Christ-mas Markets with gift ideas, vin-tage goods and seasonal foods every

Sunday as well as the whole week before Christmas.

On Saturdays the Local produce and Craft market will have even more seasonal atmosphere with special Christmas bandstand concerts and Carol Singing groups every week.

A firmly French flavour will be added when France at Home bring their visiting French Market to the Carfax for a Joyeux Noel Anglo-French market experience run-ning from Monday, December 15, to Wednesday, December 17. Being mid-week this gives those working in Horsham a perfect opportunity to use their lunch hours to stock up on some Gallic French treats and pre-sents for their Christmas tables.

The town’s celebrations reach a peak on Saturday 20th December when the true meaning of Christ-mas will be brought home by Hor-sham Churches Together with their wonderful carols, family entertain-ments and fireworks event on the Forum starting from midday.

Capping off what was a poor week on the pitch for the senior team, Kevin Borrett has confirmed that Croudace Homes have this week received confirmation from Hor-sham District Council (HDC) that officials do not expect to be ready to schedule two planning appli-cations before the Development North Committee until early in the new year.

The Hornets chairman said: “There have been a number of senior personnel changes at HDC in recent months and that has meant a change in case officer for our applications at North Heath and Hop Oast.

“Both Croudace Homes and our-selves are determined to ensure that the planning applications are

robust, meet planning guidelines and, as a result, carry an officer’s recommendation for approval. That means the process of bringing new parties up to speed by responding to their questions is an important one. At present the exact date of the hearing remains open but will be confirmed as soon as it is known”

This latest setback is sure to be a disappointment not only to Hornets supporters, who are in desperate need of some good news after see-ing their side drop to the bottom of the table following Saturday’s 7-0 reverse at Burgess Hill, but also to the larger Horsham community who stand to benefit from the de-velopment of the brand new out-of-town sports complex.

Just before 11.50am on Tuesday, December 9, an unsuccessful rob-bery attempt was made by a man who demanded cash at the HSBC Bank, Horsham.

He ran off empty-handed. No weapon was seen, no shots were fired and nobody was hurt. Police, including armed officers, are cur-rently searching the area but there is no current evidence that the pub-lic are at risk.

The family of Mike Dixon, who was knocked down and killed in Horsham, have prepared a short statement to pay tribute to him.

The 65-year-old, of Trundle Mead, Horsham, died at the scene.

“We are devastated by our sudden

loss and ask for privacy at this dif-fi cult time.”

Police have charged a man who has given his name as Luigi Dan-nile, 26, of Broadwater Lane, Cop-sale, near Horsham, with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence and driving with-out insurance.

A team from Christ’s Hospi-tal recently won fi rst place in a competition testing their abil-ity to fi nd solutions to pressing international problems.

The students beat sixty-fi ve other teams from schools across the country to win the top prize at the Benenden Model United Nations Conference.

The Christ’s Hospital team was presented with the Outstand-ing Delegation Award during the prestigious international rela-tions conference’s closing cer-emony.

Christ’s Hospital students presented proposals on a range of global concerns, including abortion and reproductive rights; detention without trial; global currency manipulation; and the protection of humanitarian workers during armed confl ict.

The conference featured a simulation of the United Na-tions, with Christ’s Hospital stu-dents representing the policies of Canada, Egypt, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Viet-nam across nine diff erent spe-cialist committees.

Six members of the Christ’s Hospital team also won indi-vidual prizes for their participa-tion in conference discussions. Outstanding Delegate Prizes were won by Dani Heath, Ed-mond King, Angel Droth-Vicens and Isobel Walker, with Highly Commended Awards presented to Grace Owen Ellis Clark and Kwame Owusu.

Dr Alistair Goddard, who helps run Model United Nations at Christ’s Hospital said: “To secure fi rst place amongst a fi eld of so many other strong schools is an extraordinary achievement. I am always impressed with Christ’s Hospital students’ ability to an-alyse world problems and fi nd innovative solutions, and with the passion that they use to per-suade others to support them. However, at this conference they exceeded my already high expec-tations. I am hugely proud of the whole team”.

The conference washosted by Benenden School. The Model United Nations programme is kindly sponsored by the Amica-ble Society of Blues.

Like many people in Horsham you may have received a fairly imper-sonal letter from the CEO of Gat-wick Airport, Stuart Wingate.

Apparently Gatwick has been fea-tured in the news quite a lot lately and this is something to do with all those expansion consultations which include, new runways, new fl ightpaths, and really nothing more than progress.

The case is made that the tax payer wont pay for these enhance-ments, so I guess the Government part funded railway expansion is not part of this conversation.

Indeed if you are a property own-er who may be directly aff ected by the development then you will see an additional £1000 a year off your council tax bill. I wonder if this promise will be available to those of us in North Horsham; shall we make a guess?

There is the promise of appren-ticeships. Not the ‘you’re fi red’ Lord Sugar variety but the fuzzy job off er opportunities. Which should lead each of us to ask just what sort of salary could successful appren-tices earn. Will those apprentices be able to rent, or even buy, property close to their place of work. Fur-ther to this cornucopia of promises comes a suggested £10 million to be made available to fund local road improvements.

The timing of this feels slightly comical; that the day I get a letter from Gatwicks CEO an MP details a report regarding air pollution which may be leading to a deadly public health crisis.

Keep in mind that the already published consultation tour had a number of points which suggested air quality was already a problem. Maybe in place of £10 million for road improvements Gatwick could commit to using electric vehicles and to funding local businesses, and councils, using electric vehicles for their fl eets. Fewer carparks around the airport would appreciated, if unlikely.

Having read Stuarts letter a few times I came away feeling rather aggrieved at the approach. I felt that I was being told that money and income will fi x everything and that all will be well providing allow-ances are made for larger income to be generated.

People are going hungry and I suspect if expansion continues then they will be having a hard time breathing due to the drop in airquality but none of this is as im-portant as money which can solve so many problems if people will just open their wallets and accept the payments from above.

Gatwick expansion and the need to secure our air quality

Winners of a site safety compe-tition organised by the A24 in-frastructure project team visited Tesco at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday, December 6, to see their winning artwork displayed on the hoarding for the A24 Horsham roadworks, and receive their priz-es and certificates.

Accompanied by their proud par-ents, the children included win-ners Oscar Witherow age 5 and So-phie Ibbotson aged 11, and runners up Oskar Dyson age 6 and Thomas Cameron age 12.

With prizes kindly donated by Tesco and health and safety con-sultants, Calford Seaden.

The competition was run by the A24 infrastructure project team to raise awareness of site safety in and around construction projects. The team invited the Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre holiday club to create pictures that depicted safety around a construction site. The children were asked to be as creative as pos-sible and draw pictures of activities that might take place in a construc-tion site, including vehicles and the team at work.

For added inspiration Charlotte, the health and safety manager from J Breheny Contractors met the children and gave them a brief talk about how to stay safe in and around construction sites. This in-cluded why special clothing is worn by construction workers, what ve-hicles might be visible during the building work and why it is impor-tant to take care around active con-

struction sites.A spokesperson from J Breheny

Contractors said: “Over 40 en-tries with fantastic pictures were received. The A24 infrastructure project team had a tough job judg-ing the high quality of entries. All the team from the A24 works would like to say a big thank you to all the entrants and congratulations to the winners and runners up.”

Lee Laflain, Manager of Tesco at Broadbridge Heath comments: “We are pleased to be involved in this competition that creatively explored the construction industry and al-lowed children to consider impor-tant health and safety issues. We hope the art prizes that we have giv-en the winners encourage them to continue to enjoy their love of art.”

For more information on the road closures please see the works web-site, www.a24horsham.co.uk or email [email protected]. For regular updates via Twitter please follow the team @a24horsham.

The Chancellor, George Osborne announced in his autumn state-ment that he is awarding a sig-nificant grant to the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance.

The seven figure sum will go towards the charity’s capital investment pro-grammes based on a new helicopter and future basing needs.

Chief Executive, Adrian Bell said: “The Chancellor’s statement today in which he granted the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust £1.5m, is a very clear and ringing endorsement of the critical service this char-ity provides to its patients, and, as

support to our capital investment programme, eloquent recognition of the need to ensure the long-term resilience and sustainability of this

vital emergency service fund-ed as it is through charita-

ble donation rather than NHS finances.

“As well as being extremely grate-ful to the Chancel-lor for this support, the Charity is also

hugely appreciative of his move to exempt

all Air Ambulance char-ity expenditure from VAT.

In our case, this will release about £100,000 per year directly to front-line services rather than the Ex-chequer and equates to over 30 life-

saving missions of the 1800 that the Charity undertakes annually.

“We still have to raise over £6m annually to provide this life-saving service but I hope our many sup-porters will, like me, rejoice in the fact that yet more of their generous and so gratefully received dona-tions will support this vital cause so directly.”

The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance which celebrates it’s 25th anniversary next year became the first air ambulance service in the country to operate a 24 hours Heli-copter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) last September. In the first year of its night operations crews have attended over 430 patients as well as about 1,400 patients by day.

Horsham Community Allotments have received help for a project to ensure access for the allotments is available to everyone including paths, raised beds, and a number of other upgrades.

Horsham company Rudridge, the civil engineering and groundwork material specialists, launched its new Community Project campaign, aiming to give something back to local causes and businesses in the Horsham area.

The Horsham Com-munity Allotments were selected to benefit from the company’s expertise, materials and labour and on Friday, December 5, the team invited Rudridge back to their site to see what they had achieved and enjoy cham-pagne and cake.

The Horsham Community Allot-ments grabbed Rudridge’s atten-tion due to their desire to encourage the community to get involved with growing in a fun and sociable way.

To make sure the allotment could be accessed by everyone in the community, paths suitable for wheelchairs were required as well as raised beds and various other materials. Rudridge were able to help provide sand and materials to make the site fully accessible for all.

John Chesson, Branch Manager for Rudridge Horsham said: “We were really pleased to be able to help the Horsham Community Al-lotments with their project. Their

hard work and tireless effort to im-prove their site’s access really has paid off and now it looks fantastic.

“Not only have we helped Helen Whittington, Horsham Community Allotment Project Manager, and her team with our donations from the community fund, but we have built

an established relationship. We look forward to help-

ing the allotments in the future with other pro-jects.”

Helen added: “We cannot thank Rudridge enough for their gen-

erosity over the past few months. Their donations

have been superb and without them there’s no way we would have achieved everything on our site that we have done so far.

“Our Community Allotment was also chosen as one of the Waitrose “Green Token” Community groups in September. Horsham customers clearly thought we were a worthwhile scheme to support, as we received a cheque for £494! Our big thanks to Waitrose staff and customers”

Helen and her team are looking for more volunteers to join them and help out during the next grow-ing season. Volunteers are asked to simply come along when they can, join the fun, sociable and lo-cal growing scheme, sharing in the success and produce! Novices and experienced gardeners are all wel-come. For further information con-tact Helen on 07941 338169 or visit www.transitionhorsham.org.uk.

Chanctonbury Sport & Leisure in Storrington recently underwent a re-development and enjoyed a grand reopening on Tuesday, De-cember 2.

The centre has improved its fa-cilities with a new gym, changing rooms and sauna and salt/steam rooms.

The guest of honour on the even-ing was Wing Commander John Bell MBE DFC who is one of the very few aircrew who served in Lancaster Bombers during the Second World War.

The charity is very proud to say that it is more than bricks and mor-tar and is asking members of the lo-cal community to support its vision of a more active and healthy local community by becoming a Patron of the centre www.impulseleisure.co.uk/wcra-patrons-scheme.

As part of this appeal and opening of the re-developed centre a charity film was shown featuring users of the centre telling their story. Sally Gunnell OBE starred in the film and talks of the importance of the cen-tre, whatever age you are.

Sally said: “So much of my life now is centred around health and wellbeing and passing on the im-portance of this to the wider com-munity. These wellbeing hubs are so important to different groups as well as individuals of all different ages and abilities”.

Last Saturday 100 people turned out on a freezing cold night to sup-port the Chairmans’s Trust Charity Ball at the Drill Hall in Denne Road Horsham.

This ball was the event of the year for the Trust and also proved to be one of the most spectacular events in Horsham this year. The last Chairman’s Charity Ball in Hor-sham was on March 1, 1994, in aid of the Hospice Movement. Guests came from across the district with a full coach load from Henfi eld and Wineham.

The Drill Hall had been trans-formed into a frosted wintery scene from The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, with trees planted in the snow around the walls and hand-made table decorations individu-ally lit and decorated. On arrival the

guests had to enter Narnia through the wardrobe which replaced the entrance doors to the hall. With suitably subtle lighting, entering the hall through the fog became a truly magical experience. I am in-debted to Miss Katie Durkan for weeks of preparation and hard work and her expertise in decorating the hall and creating this amazing mas-terpiece.

All the guests were enthralled with this vision on arrival and all commented on the enjoyable and fantastic night that they had. Many enquired as to making this an an-nual event and ticket availability for the next ball. Perhaps it is now time to make this an annual event as im-portant civic events always serve to provide an opportunity for the community to pull together to help those less fortunate.

I was also honoured to have dis-tinguished guests Cllr. Martyn Bell and Mrs Bell, Chairman of Chiches-ter District Council and Cllr. Gordon Marples and Mrs Marples, Chair-man of Mid Sussex District Council

who very kindly also acted as Master of Ceremonies for the evening with his fund raising game OGNIB, call-ing the raffl e and being auctioneer for the evening raising over £2,000.

I was also delighted to have the support of Horsham District Coun-cillors Mr and Mrs Youtan, Mr and Mrs Chidlow and Mr and Mrs Ritchie from the North of the district and Mr and Mrs Dawe and Mr and Mrs Circus from the South of the dis-trict.

The auction prizes which raised so much money were very kindly provided by Spread Eagle Hotel, Midhurst, Nick Herbert MP, Alsford Timber, Horsham, Covers Build-ers Merchants, Horsham and Mr Dominick O’Connell for the For-mula 1 prizes.

The Drill Hall was provided free of charge by Horsham District Council along with secretarial support from Mrs Sue Franks and a special thank you to Mr Rob Boole, the Drill Hall caretaker.

The photography at the ball was provided by Paul Weller Photogra-phy who has kindly provided the photographs for this article.

The trust will have raised circa £8,000 on the evening and £3,500 has already been distributed to families in need across the Horsh-am district.

Finally, I would express my sin-cere thanks and gratitude to any-body I have missed off my list and to my wife and family who have worked tirelessly over the last few weeks to make this ball a success and to ensure that we were able to raise enough money to continue to be able to provide assistance to those enduring hardship in the Horsham district at this special time of year.

In this months’ article our business expert and author Janette Whitney gives her top tips for a Christmas sales boost

James WillisEmployment Lawyer, stevensdrake

For employment lawyers, it is as much a Christmas tradition as tur-key and mince pies.

Each December, we all trot out our articles on the perils of holding a Christmas party. Well far be it from me to fl y in the face of tradition, so here is this year’s off ering!Who should you invite?

When drawing up the invites list, you should aim to be as inclusive as possible. No one should feel left out. Remember to make an eff ort to invite those who are presently away from work, whether because of maternity leave, sickness or for any other reason.

If staff are encouraged to invite their partners along, allow for the prospect of unmarried couples and same-sex relationships.Where and when should you hold it?

It is worth thinking carefully about the venue for your Christmas party. Is it accessible to all, including those with a disability? Can people get home easily? Choosing a venue that might encourage people to drink and then drive home is clearly inadvis-able. So consider whether you have

good public transport links or ready access to taxis. What should you do?

Consider how you make the party appealing to all. Organising an event solely based around the consump-tion of large quantities of alcohol will no doubt please some of your staff , but it could well be a turn-off for others. In particular, be sensitive to the religious and other beliefs of your staff ; make sure that there are plenty of non-alcoholic drinks and that the food allows for a vegetarian option. What about the entertainment?

Be careful about the speakers or entertainers that you choose to use. There is a very well known Employ-ment Tribunal case that arose out of the booking of the ‘stand-up co-median’ Bernard Manning. You can probably guess what went wrong there! What should you talk about?

When a lot of alcohol has been consumed, people become less in-hibited and more likely to say (or do) precisely what is on their mind. As a result, the risk of discrimina-tion and harassment claims rears its ugly head. So make sure that people understand that this is a work event and a level of professionalism is still

required.Oh, and if you are the boss, re-

member that alcohol and conver-sions about pay rises don’t mix!The morning after the night before

Make sure that people know if they are required to be in work the day after the Christmas party. If they phone in sick, carefully consider whether it is genuine sickness or the result of over-indulgence. Then consider whether disciplinary action is required.Do your policies need to be given the ‘once-over’?

I wouldn’t suggest that you need a policy specifi cally to cover your Christmas party. But it is worth con-sidering whether your existing poli-cies on conduct, harassment and the like are clear about what is expected of people in this context. If not, now is the time to get your house in order.Make sure you have fun

Finally, and before I begin to sound too much like the legal equivalent of the ‘Grinch’, the Christmas party is a chance to come together, celebrate a successful year and thank your col-leagues for their eff orts. It is also an opportunity to have fun. So having taken some sensible precautions, re-lax, unwind and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!

Offi ce Christmas parties – a festive warningAt Oomoo hairdressers they know that your hair is as individual as you and that a good hair cut starts with a good consultation.

Understanding their clients’ needs is as important as the cut-ting and coloring itself. So before they start they make sure that you and your stylist fi nd the style that’s right for you, manageable and fi ts into your lifestyle.

With a keen eye on new styles and cutting techniques together with Organic products, they make

sure that they are at the leading edge. It is important to them that their stylists attend regular training sessions and seminars, which allow them to stay at the cutting edge of the profession, producing contem-porary looks to suit all ages and lifestyles.

They are situated in the pretty downland village of Storrington, Sussex, and their styling repertoire knows no bounds.

Together with the stylised interi-or and the lack of chemical aromas, the setting is ideal for encouraging a one-to-one connection.

At Oomoo they understand that your hair is as individual as you and that a good hair cut starts as a good

consultation. They believe that un-derstanding clients’ needs is as im-portant as the cutting and colouring itself.

They make sure that you and your stylist fi nd the style that’s right for you, your hair and your lifestyle.

Even if you are having only a cut you can be sure all their products are of the highest quality and are made using certifi ed organic in-gredients. Organic Colour Systems is a naturally-based and highly ef-fective range of hair colours, which perform better than any ammonia-based product and without all the unpleasant side eff ects.

Oomoo Organic Hair Salon can be found at 7 The Square, High Street, Storrington, West Sussex. RH20 4DJ.

For more information call 01903 745616.

Since the beginning, they have focused on crafting quality products that are scientifi cally engineered to work, and express their distinctive style and spirit.

Their motto is: “By Creating beauty sustainably, They encourage people to take care of themselves, of the environment in which they live and work, of the things they love”.

Organic haircare in Storrington

As we approach Christmas, small but thoughtful acts of kindness could make a lasting impression when the world returns to normal-ity in January. No matter what ser-vice or product you provide, there are a variety of quick and easy ways to encourage your custom-ers to come back and buy from you again in the New Year.

Here are some tips that could help increase loyalty and sales:1. Send a specially designed Christmas card

Personalised Christmas cards are an ideal way to say thanks to your customers for their business. It makes customers feel appreci-ated and not just ‘another sale’, especially if it was a highly involved purchase where you built a personal relationship.2. Give customers small gifts

Thank your customers for spend-ing their time and money on you by sending them free gifts over Christ-mas. HMRC classes some gifts, such as a bottle of wine, chocolates, or a Christmas pudding as ‘trivial’ and therefore tax free, if the cost of the items does not exceed the thresh-old. Spending less than £50 on these gifts means there is no unex-pected tax bill in the New Year.3. Run promotional activities for a limited period.

Although it is diffi cult to com-pete with larger competitors, there are always small incentives that could infl uence the buying deci-sion. If you own a shop, off er a free gift wrapping service for purchases

over a specifi ed amount. If you run a garage, throw in a free oil and wa-ter change or tyre pressure check for customers spending a certain amount.4. Put an off er on a daily deals voucher code site

Around Christmas when peo-ple are looking for cheaper, more unique presents, voucher code web-sites could provide the answer. Be sure you can aff ord to provide the deal that you are off ering, as they will often sell out and many small businesses have come unstuck treating it as cheap marketing that backfi res badly.5. Reward your loyal customers

It’s more common to see busi-nesses off er great introductory rates to new customers. Make sure that you don’t forget those customers that have stayed with you through the year leading up to Christmas. A tiered loyalty programme will cater for all of your customers. Of-fer new customers initial benefi ts, but increase the value of them as they continue to purchase with you. Standard schemes and cards will of-fer new customers the same as loyal ones, but a tiered scheme can be viewed as an attainable goal.6. Order branded gifts customers can use

The more personal the gifts, the more likely it is that customers will remember that it was your busi-ness that sent it. You can send them branded goods, but choose carefully as while fridge magnets, coasters and pens with your logo on may ap-peal to some, other may deem your gift worthless clutter.

Of course a simple courtesy phone call to your customers to say thank you for your business works won-ders too!!

A packed house at the Capitol en-joyed two hours of entertainment from performers in the local the-atre scene. Dan Barnes, techni-cal supervisor at the theatre, was inspired to put together his own show, Cue For A Song, to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Ariel Company Theatre and HAODS, and dance school Fi Steps, were joined by solo perform-ers including ac-tor Jack Lane (known for his performances in pantomime and as Albert Steptoe in the stage version of Steptoe and Son).

Sarah Es-ser performed Streisand an-them Don’t Rain on My Parade, and Tina Turner tribute artist Claude Hopkins performed her versions of songs from Dreamgirls and The Bodyguard. Fi Steps accompanied Becky Hunt as she sang Let It Go from Frozen, and Ariel brought two young soloists, Thomas Ball and Will Carey, and an ensemble and a choir.

Nathanael Landskroner, fresh from opening for Robbie Williams at the LG Arena and on his way to supporting Michael Bublé at the NIA Birmingham, brought his

soon-to-be-trademark ‘Prince of Swing’ style to proceedings, and performed as Miss Trunchbull in a song from Matilda.

Dan Barnes said: “I feel humbled that so many of my friends and col-leagues have come together to make this show a reality. I’m delighted that the audience’s reactions have

been even more enthusiastic than I’d dared hope. I’d

like to thank every-one who has been

involved – on-stage and off – in bringing my dream into re-ality.”

The team offstage were a s s e m b l e d

from Dan’s friends and col-

leagues past and present, including

former Capitol staff who had returned es-

pecially to help at this event. Touring technicians came along es-pecially to support Dan, as well as the regular Capitol staff.

Ticket sales and fundraising have led to a total of almost £3,000 raised for Cancer Research UK. The final fundraising total is still being added up and Dan will be present-ing a cheque to Cancer Research UK very soon. In the meantime any-one wishing to add to the total can text “CFAS88” plus their donation amount to 70070.

Ariel Company Theatre’s Othellos students from Horsham, Crawley, East Grinstead, and Burgess Hill recently performed their largest showcase at the Chequers Mead Theatre, East Grinstead. The show starred 82 children and adults, all performers have individual chal-lenges or educational needs but share a common interest of dance, drama and song.

The students, whose ages range from seven-years-old to 35, are supported by Ariel Buddies. These Ariel students give their time to work and mentor the Othellos on a weekly basis, twice this commit-ment has been recognised with Ariel Buddies winning the coveted Lady Diana Award. Through this partnership the children build a great bond and on stage everyone is equal, producing a fantastic range of theatre.

Highlights from the evening in-cluded Burgess Hill students tack-ling with depth and humour an abridged version of Romeo and Ju-liet. Ariel’s adults meanwhile per-formed a very moving physical the-atre piece names ‘Soldiers’. There was a stunning range of independ-ent work from students including some monologues which students had recently mastered for their London Academy of Music & Dra-matic Dance (LAMDA) exams.

A challenging piece of physical theatre to Queens ‘Under Pressure’

had the whole theatre rocking, and the climax of the evening was the aptly chosen fi nale ‘With a Lit-tle Help from my Friends’.

Ariel Principal Nicci Hopson said: “Ariel truly be-lieves that drama crosses boundaries and know no divi-sions. On stage the students, with support from their Buddies, are free to express themselves and demonstrate what they have learnt. This was our largest show and it has been an incredible year for the Othellos, with many taking

their LAMDA exams for the fi rst time and several achieving

distinctions. I feel very proud of the students

and our inspiration-al tutors.”

Mrs S Dias, par-ent of Ben, said: “My son has been coming to Ariel

for just six months and the diff er-

ence we witnessed at home and school has

been breath- taking. We cannot thank the Buddies enough. Tonight’s show is evidence what a benefi cial tool drama is for children with special needs. “

FarlingtonSchool

The Farlington Autumn Con-cert, the third major event in this term’s musical calendar, was per-formed in front of a packed audi-ence in the New Courtyard Hall on Monday, November 24.

Jane Thomas, director of music, introduced the concert as one which would include a plethora of var-ied musical treats, and the evening certainly lived up to expectation. Over 120 girls took part, with the Prep and Senior girls collaborating marvellously in many of the pieces performed.

The theme of autumn was carried through the evening, starting with a rousing rendition of what is many people’s favourite of Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ from the Concert Orches-tra.

‘Autumn Leaves’ from Aris-toskatz was also performed, and the concert ended with Farlingtonic’s ‘California Dreamin’ which neat-ly returned to the theme of fall-ing leaves and autumnal weather but sent the audience out with a ‘spring’ in their step.

In between, we had a terrifi c se-lection of contrasting items from instrumental groups including the newly formed Stringendo, Strood

Players, Flute Choir, Guitar Ensem-ble, Clarinet Trio, Telemann Strings and Strood Consort.

Choral items included a charming Junior Choir, a rhythmically inven-tive GLEE and the ever-eff ervescent 60-strong SKATZ! Razzmajazz, di-rected by Matt Ellis, performed a fabulous rendition of the chilled-out jazz number, ‘Cantaloupe Is-land’, and the Rock Band performed a mash-up of two pop-songs to great acclaim. The evening show-cased the wealth of talent and hard work of all the young performers.

Kim CookThe Steyning Tea Rooms

Well Christmas is well and truly upon us, the decorations are up, the Christmas songs are playing,

the advent calendar is open and we are feeling very festive indeed.

We like to have some different cakes and goodies in December, so as well as our port and cranber-ry mince pies and brandy soaked

Christmas cake we like to make these apple and cinnamon flap-jacks. The cinnamon makes these flapjacks really warming, perfect for the crisp, cold weather.

Apple & Cinnamon flapjacksIngredients:• 400g oats• 2 tablespoons golden syrup• 200g butter• 200g demerara sugar• 2 apples peeled, cored & grated• 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Warming apple and cinnamon flapjacksEach month we will be featuring a different recipe which you can make at home, or try at the tea rooms

At this time of year we all ap-preciate the joy and happiness of Christmas with family and friends, the feasting and the gifts.

But it can also be quite a strain and many of us feel under a great deal of pressure, running around buying those perfect gifts and en-suring our tables are laden with the most delicious food.

The old days of visiting the butcher, baker and candlestick maker may have been eroded by the big retailers in their gigantic sheds but times are changing again as we return to markets and small shops.

In the past few years we are see-ing more independent shops open-ing, specialist food markets thriving and an abundance of local produce from the Sussex area alone with de-mand from customers growing at a similar rate.

The taste of local fruit and vege-tables far outstrips the cold-stored greengrocery from supermarkets. Cheese lovingly produced at our many dairies is delicious and hugely varied with the South producing bries, cheddars, goat, sheep and some amazing blues. There are in-creasingly more butchers offering very fine local meats from animals reared on our lush grasslands with a resulting flavour that helps even a little go a long way and we even benefit from a regular supply of fresh fish to the town.

With an abundance of artisan bakers and cake makers, there is no reason to rely on bread packed with preservatives. And to top all this, there is the amazing army of specialist producers busily creat-ing everything from beers, wines, ciders, chutneys, jams and choco-

late. All of this makes for great Christmas feasting, perfect gifts and hampers for those ‘impossible to buy for loved ones.

X-cellent Xmas ShoppingGreengrocers - there’s a real

choice now for fresh fruit and vege-tables from organic Greener Greens in the Carfax Market, Crates Local offering and the Mixed Market with a traditional greengrocer.

Butchers - for real value meat, there’s Bernies in Piries Place Mar-ket every Saturday, the Carfax mar-ket hosts Garlicwood Farm with top quality meats together South Downs Venison for game and it is definitely worth a short walk from the Town Centre for New Street Butchers.

Fishmongers - opened a few years ago following the success of the fish stall on the Carfax, Pitcairn and Sons offer some of the fresh-est fish you can buy at good prices you’ll be surprised at.

Bakers - every Saturday, the Hun-gry Guest and Slindon Bakery can be found on the Carfax Market along with some amazing cake makers in-cluding Just Brownies and Mr Bake. Artisan bread and cakes are also available throughout the week from Crates Local and freshly baked bread from Forfars and Truffles.

Cheese - a huge range of lo-cal, guest and seasonal cheeses are available from the Carfax Market and Crates Local - look out for Nor-bury Blue, Dirty Vicar, Mayfield and Sussex Charmer. You can also buy some of the best cheese biscuits, Sweet Sussex, made by Lesley Ward of Horsham Cheese Shop fame!

Chocolate - the town has a wide choice of handmade chocolate from

3. Add the oats into a large bowl and stir in the apple and cinnamon.

5. Spread the mixture into a greased and lined tin. We use a 30 x 23cm tin.

6. Bake for approx 20 mins until golden brown.

7. Leave to cool in the tin before cutting into squares.

Wimblehurst Chocolates on the Carfax Market, Cocoa Loco in Piries Place, Montezumas in Swan Walk and many other specialists stocked in local food shops such as Lucy Armstrong, Amelia Rope and Wil-liam Curley.

Wine, beer & cider - with more breweries in and around Horsham than ever before and a growing list of great winemakers and cider pro-

ducers in the South Downs, you can pick up plenty of locally produced drink from specialists in town - Beer Essentials and Crates Local.

Preserves and Puddings - found every Saturday in the Carfax and throughout the week in our lo-cal food shops, Sussex Faire has a mouth watering range of jams, chutneys and, at this time of year, Christmas Puddings.

Perfect Gifts - all or some of the above make for amazing presents in a hamper, box or even a local bag for life so there’s no need to ever be stuck for gift inspiration as we all love food and drink!

Make your shopping trip even more pleasurable, support local and have a wonderful Christmas.

Pulborough is a fascinating village that takes some time to get your head around its geography. Coming from Storington you skirt the edge of the frequently fl ooded Arun that

provides a rich harvest for wildlife and see the shops and houses hanging on to the val-ley sides stretched out before you.

This if you didn’t know better is all Pul-borough is, but if you turn left and go up the valley side, following the direction of Ro-man road Stane Street, (today’s A29) you come across another hidden Pulborough that seems to be just as long. Lying between these two Pulboroughs at the crest of the hill is the heart of the village, the medieval Church of St Mary’s.

Many a driver will pass by the church as it lies just off the road, yet it is well worth a detour to look. As you walk through the fi ne 14th century lynch gate the church stands in front of you, with its solid square tower built out of local sandstone 600 years ago around 1404 and 1420. However parts of the church date back to the 13th century. Once you step through the door, protected from the winter winds, another world opens up with the white walls and yellow sandstone mouldings. For the church has some wonderful monuments that reveal how important and wealthy me-dieval Pulborough was as it lay along impor-tant trade routs that were laid out in Roman times, if not before. For back in1423 Thomas Harlyng, the priest employed London work-shops to carve his monument, but equally he gave over £53 to rebuilding the church, so

why not have a grand monument. Probably too many the most touching monument is of a man slumped in an armchair with his fam-ily around him and an angel fl ying overhead. This almost Dickensian scene was carved years before the death of the man it com-memorated, for the sculptor died in 1866, (J Gibson) but Mr Hammond died in 1895.

One of the interesting features of the church is its marble font that dates back to the late 12th century, so earlier than the building itself. This may have come from one of two churches mentioned for Pul-borough, in the Doomsday book which was written in 1086, or may have come from an-other church altogether but it is a remarka-ble survival – where else in your trip to Pul-borough could you see a 900 year old ruin. Well if you feel in the mood for a good walk then about a mile to the north west of Pul-borough in woodland lies Park Mound , the remains of a Norman motte and bailey cas-tle. For the very richness of the region and the roads that descend on the village are not recent developments but ones nearly 2000 years old and required defending then and in to the Norman period.

As you leave the church spend view min-uets and wonder over the road and walk along the path past the Chequers pub, for there you will see one of the great views of Sussex. The vista is of the River Arun fl ood plain, and then think back 250,000 years for our ancestors exploited this region for the very birdlife that makes the RSB Pulborough brooks such a fascinating place.

A trip around Pulborough

Storrington is a village whose past is hid-den by the shadow of the South Downs and its other, more noted, neighbours; yet it has great charm and depth as you wander along the high street and investigate the side streets that act like arteries, pulling the community towards its heart. Prehis-toric man may have lived up on the chalk downs, leaving behind extensive scatters of fl ints from 6,000 years ago, but it was the Saxons who gave the village its name and identity.

Imagine if you will, an easy thing to do as you drive in to Storrington, that you are a Saxon farmer/settler moving into this area. No one lives there; it is a landscape of trees and woodland pasture with a stream running through its midst. It is a place with no name. Then high up, the sight of storks nestling in the upper reaches of the branches looking down on the Germanic settlers. These set-tlers decided not to call this place after the stream or after the owner of the land; not even after its geographical setting; but after the natural wonder of storks nestling and breading: hence the stork is the symbol of Storrington.

This new place, lying a days walk from the religious royal township of Saxon Stey-ning with its place of pilgrimage, took full advantage of the local geology. The nearby sandstone beds outcropped at the surface providing warm quick drying soils. Later in the twentieth century they provided build-ing sand at Sullington, whose activity com-peted with the natural wonder of the sand

forming heathland, now in part-owned by the National Trust.

As the Saxon era moved on into Norman times Storrington developed, but unlike some of the other Sussex villages it did not have a grant for a market till 1400 when one was held on Wednesday along with a couple of fairs. This may refl ect a dynamic and ‘go getting’ attitude, typical of some of the vil-lage’s twentieth-century traders, making the most of opportunities as Steyning and Bramber were having diffi culties. Undoubt-edly they would have sold rabbits, a luxury dish and popular fur, at the market and fairs as the poor quality heathland was exploited to make giant rabbit farms, or warrens, a name that lies scattered across the region.

With its southward development hin-dered by the South Downs, Storrington grew east and westwards as well as expanding northwards, becoming what geographers love, a polyfocal settlement as the village expanded across the landscape, making the most of the opportunities. But the A283, that road mirroring its Roman ancestor, still forms the vein drawing in for these multiple centres and it is along its sides that many shops lie. Unfortunately for Storrington it couldn’t take advantage of the railway; it re-lied on turnpike roads and local track ways. This undoubtedly led to the idea of a com-munity cut off from hustle and bustle of the twentieth century and that caught the im-agination, as it does of the visitor today, as they wander the secluded streets looking at

the amazing survival of cot-tages, just meters from the modern highway, of early twentieth-century artists.

It was in the year before the Great Crash in 1929 that on the outskirts of Stor-rington, in an area known as Heath Common, that a remarkable lady named Vera Pragnell bought a tract of land creating ‘The Sanc-tuary’ and gave it away to intellectuals and artists. While East Sussex has the Bloomsbury group based at Charleston Storrington has The Sanctuary, but its story, like much of Storrington’s history, lies forgotten. To-day’s Museum Society are valiantly trying to rescue it. For Storrington has a rich past, the home of great British musicians Arnold Bax and nearby John Ire-land, of fl ower fairy artist Mary Barker, and of the fi rst president of Kenya, Keny-atta, during the war years. Storrington is well worth investigating during these winter months, you will be surprised by what you fi nd.

LOCAL PRODUCE EVERY SAT IN CARFAX

The Mixed Market returns home !

Piries Place every Saturday

Street food, mixed & produce every thurs in carfax

Sitting to the east of the Carfax in Horsham town centre, you’ll find Piries Place. Now a thriving shop-ping area, the square has a rich history which began with an in-vestment from the headmaster of Collyer’s, Mr William Pirie.

William Pirie became the head-master of Collyer’s in 1822 at only 20 years of age, he remained the headmaster there for 46 years and was often seen around Horsham town centre riding a donkey and

cart, hence the statue of Mr Pirie that sits in the square today.

William Pirie became a resident of note after he built almshouses there, which are the equivalent of low cost housing. This area of hous-ing came to be known locally as Pir-ies Place.

The site is almost unrecognizable now compared to how it was, how-ever the narrow alleyway running from the Carfax through to Piries Place has been there since the cot-

tages were built. On the site where Waitrose now

stands was the old Horsham mar-ket. The bustling market was lo-cated here for at least 100 years. Today’s markets in town follow this tradition, keeping Horsham on the map as a traditional market town.

In the late 1980s plans were drawn up to redevelop the area into a shopping centre, the market closed in 1988.

The shopping centre was finished

in 1991 and opened with Waitrose. Only three units were filled in this time and it went into receivership for a few years.

Local market guru PJ Aldred, who currently runs the Horsham Mar-kets got involved in 1991 and the then town centre manager Laurie Furneaux asked her to set up a mar-ket there. PJ said: “It was a small arts and crafts market on Thursdays and Saturdays. It became very suc-cessful and in 1993 I became cen-tre manager of Piries Place and we expanded the market and by 1995 it was full and was thriving.”

Piries Place was bought back from receivers in 1995 and in 2000 the

market moved down to the Bishop-ric.

Today the market has moved back in to Piries Place, all the retail units filled this year and business is booming, putting life back into the square.

The iconic thistle on the Piries Place signs is a nod to the Scottish heritage of WIlliam Pirie. PJ added: “I think William Pirie would be proud the site is officially named after him and he’d be thrilled the logo contains the thistle.

Many thanks to PJ Aldred who was Piries Place center manager in 1993 and currently runs Horsham Markets and Crates Local.

What’s Inside

LettingsPage 39

Are we better or worse off? That is the question prospective homebuyers are asking George Osborne as he announced his Autumn Statement 2014 changes to the payment of stamp duty land tax on residential property purchases.

The changes take effect imme-diately. However, if you have ex-changed contracts but are yet to complete, you have the choice of the new or old regime.

Helen Rowe, residential prop-erty lawyer at stevensdrake, said: “Many will see this new formula as being fairer - the fundamental

change is that the payment of tax is graduated; rather than one per-centage tax on the whole amount of the purchase price (slab) the buyer pays differing percentages on differing chunks of the pur-chase price (slice).”

The minimum threshold has not changed but the percentage tax payable has changed with the band values also changing. There is still no stamp duty payable until the consideration payable exceeds £125,000.

The new rates are 0% on the value of a property 0-£125,000, 2% on £125,001 - £250,000, 5%

on £250,001 - £925,000, 10% on £925,001 - £1,500,000 and 12% on the remaining value over £1,500,000.

For example therefore on a pur-chase of a property for £450,000 the SDLT = £12,500.This is 0% on 1st £125,000, 2% on £125,000 and 5% on £200,000.

The old regime would have been 4% on £450,000 = £13,500.

If you have any questions on the payment of stamp duty land tax under the new system or any residential property matter please give Helen Rowe a call on 01293 596964.

Whether it is to cover a car, pet, home or holiday, choosing an insur-ance product can be a complicated minefi eld involving endless small print and countless variations be-tween what diff erent policies do and do not cover.

For landlords, the right home insur-ance cover is vital, but it is all too easy to get it wrong and doing so can result fi nancial devastation, as one ill-fated couple discovered.

Richard and Rosalind Meryon, whose story was reported recently in the Tel-egraph, rented out their £300,000 home to tenants while they were overseas and returned to fi nd their house and all its contents completely trashed. The tenants had stripped the property of the furniture and other fi ttings and there was extensive wa-

ter damage to the walls, ceilings and fl oors caused by extremely high heat and humidity levels, indicating the tenants had likely been growing can-nabis in the house.

The couple mistakenly thought their home insurance policy – which was sold to them as suitable for a tenanted property - would cover them for the £56,000 worth of damage incurred. But when they tried to claim their in-surer refused to pay out, pointing to small print in the policy stating that it did not include cover for malicious damage or theft caused by people law-fully in the home. The only cover pro-vided was for one-off incidences such as fi re, escape of water, subsidence, storm damage, fl ood, theft and dam-age following a break in.

Although it may seem reasonable to assume that an insurance policy for a rented property will provide cover for damage caused by tenants, when it comes to insurance one should never assume anything. Every detail should be checked so you have a thorough un-derstanding of exactly what you are - and are not - covered for.

Sadly this couple’s experience is not unique. Too many landlords inad-equately insure their property, some mistakenly believing that a stand-ard home insurance policy will cover them. This story is a salutary reminder of the importance not only of choosing the right insurance product but also of regular professional property inspec-tions in protecting your investment and mitigating your risks.

Fortunately the minefi eld of land-lord insurance can be safely and easily overcome with specialist help. Lead-ers, in partnership with Hepburns Insurance Ltd, have put together a specialist landlord policy which is de-signed to provide landlords with all the cover they need. It draws on more than 30 years of letting experience to ensure that everything a landlord is likely to need cover for is included for complete peace of mind.

Horsham Hawks 42 – 40 Craw-ley Crusaders

BasketballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Hawks started well enough against newly formed Crawley Crusaders last Saturday (December 6) but de-spite good baskets from Josh Raby, Ellie Hutchinson, James Maclean and Kieran Lee they went into the second quarter 11-8 down.

In a more even second quarter in which Maclean and Lee added to their tally of baskets, Crawley con-ceded a number of fouls that Hawks could not take advantage of leaving them trailing 21-18 at half time.

An attempted press at the begin-ning of Q3 didn’t work as Hawks lost defensive solidity giving up 9 points without reply and a 12 point gap looking too much to bridge. Coach Nick Probin decided a major rethink was in order making a 5 for 5 change which seemed to have a positive effect. In particular Joe Kershaw brought real aggression and pace

to the floor hustling his player into mistakes enabling Hawks to up the tempo and regain the initiative, making a comeback a possibility.

From here on it was one way traf-fic and Hawks chipped away at the Crusaders lead. Defensively Hawks were utterly dominant with Hutch-inson blocking everything Crusad-ers threw at them with her team-mates responding likewise showing great defensive quality and fighting for every rebound and 50/50 ball.

With the scores level and 17 sec-onds remaining Hutchinson was

fouled and 2 free throws presented Hawks with a chance to take the game. Unfortunately both missed but in the scramble for the rebound, the ball found its way to Lee who re-mained composed to sink the win-ning basket and seal an outstanding comeback and a final score of 42-40.

Hawks U14 scorers: James Ma-clean 17, Kieran Lee 15, Ellie Hutch-inson 4, George Makin 4, Josh Raby 2, Tegan Holden, Millie Lea Clayton, Amber Hutchinson, Maya Le Ros-signol, Joe Kershaw, Michail Man-thios, Jamie Miller.

Lee grabs last second victory in a thriller

Horsham Hawks 55 – 63 Wor-thing D&D

BasketballDave Smith – Sports Editor

The U12 Horsham Hawks Sussex league winning streak which dates back to March 15 2013 finally came to an end in dramatic fashion after a thriller against a well organised Worthing team, which features four South East England players.

An explosive Horsham got off to the perfect start building an incred-ible 22-5 lead against one of the strongest teams in the County with two minutes still remaining in the

first quarter. A combination of ex-cellent defending, strong rebound-ing and attacking drives to the bas-ket left Worthing shell shocked and the Hawks in control of the contest. Worthing responded by beginning to narrow the Hawks lead in the second quarter with Horsham go-ing into the half time break leading 34-24. The third period was a more even affair as both teams traded baskets but still saw Horsham sus-tain a healthy 46-35 advantage with just 10 minutes to go.

The fourth quarter saw Wor-thing show tremendous resilience and determination to keep fighting while Horsham lost composure and began making costly mistakes. An

incredible 18-3 run by Worthing to close the game resulted in a well-deserved victory for the hosts and heartbreak for the Hawks who lost a league game for the first time in twenty months. Head Coach Dave Clayton said, “This was the game that got away after being in com-plete control for so long. Like every game we will take on board the les-sons and come back stronger next time”. Next up for the Hawks is the Henfield Heat.

Week 2 of Horsham Central League Phase 2 saw Horsham C crush young MMJ3 9-0 to go top of the second division. Only Tom Farr caused the C trio of Ollie Giles, Mark Clover and Graeme Selwyn to lose any sets.

Storrington’s Keith Anderson was on top form to earn a maxi-mum against Horsham B in the same division but his young team-mates could not add to his efforts, although James Anderson did take sets against more than one oppo-nent.

In Division 1 Horsham A put the squeeze on MMJ1 with an impres-

sive 9-0 result. Mark Weston was Horsham A’s leading man winning all his matches without conceding a set.

MMJ East Grinstead turned up a player short but managed to des-patch MMJ 26-3 nonetheless cour-tesy of Harry Collins and Brian Biggs maximums.

Horsham E gave Warnham a tough third division debut by win-ning 6-3. Well done however to Daran Francis for resisting with a confident maximum.

The pattern of the other third tier match was similar with MMJ5 beat-ing MMJ6 6-3 and all the games of the losing team being won by a sin-gle player, in this case Billingshurst lad Chris Goodier.

There was another loss for Joles-field in week 8 of the Horsham Pri-mary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A) as they went down 5-3 to a Leechpool team who are look-ing stronger with every week.

Holbrook and Southwater both won their penultimate games eas-ily to set up their clash in the last meeting in January. Holbrook will need to win by 7-1 or better to take the title.

Kingslea beat Heron Way 7-1 with only Louis Humphries deny-ing them a full house. Warnham consolidated their third spot with an impressive 6-2 win over Billing-shurst.

Saturday December 6 – London 3 South EastOld Dunstonians 7 – 29 Hor-sham

RugbyRichard Ordidge

Horsham secured an important hard fought 29-7 away win to fourth placed Old Dunstonians but it came at a cost.

With the Tredgett brothers both off the field with injuries by half time, and giant second row, Jonny Whiting, missing his first game of the season with a fractured finger, Horsham’s young side had to dig deep to absorb the pressure applied by a huge Dunstonians pack.

Horsham started strongly and on 5 minutes following a scrum knock on, Johnson saw a gap open up in front him and ran in from 25 yards to score under the posts with the try converted by Will Bell.

Horsham’s Richard Tredgett was forced to leave the field with a mi-nor ankle injury, to be replaced by Ben Pirt.

Giles Barber coming back from injury came on as a tactical change, and Horsham went on the attack re-sulting in a scrum Michael Tredgett picked up to score from five yards.

Then on the stroke of half time after good multi-phase play Pirt stepped inside his man to score from two yards and Horsham went in to the break with a 19-0 lead.

The second half started with a long period of Dunstonians pres-sure as Horsham fought hard to maintain their line intact incurring a hand injury to Arun Thompson and a head injury to Jonny Goward. On 68 minutes Horsham saw an-

other mismatch and James Whiting was able to round his man and run in from 25 yards to score the bonus point fourth try.

From a runaround move Dunsto-nians gratefully picked up a loose ball, with the Green and White de-fence committed to attack they were able to run in from the half way line.

There was still time for a fifth try when, after Talbot had taken the ball up by running hard and straight, another mismatch was identified and Whiting added his second try to seal the win.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker was clearly delighted with the win; “I am really happy with the result in terms of the number of disruptions we had to sort out following the loss of a number of our main ball carri-ers and line out options.

I am however disappointed that we didn’t manage to keep them out and it was our mistake which al-lowed them to score. It was clear early on that we had too much pow-er, cohesion, structure and abil-ity for them and the tries came as we started to wear them down. We played with high intensity and great defensive organisation bearing in mind the amount of disruptions we had.

My man of the match goes to Tom Johnson for his all round handling, kicking, tackling and for the good try that he scored.”

Horsham’s next game is tomor-row (Saturday 13) at home to Uck-field who currently sit in mid table.

Horsham: W Bell, Gibbs, Tuha-karaina, Ordidge, Whiting; Johnson, Rush; Talbot, Fisher, Fairs (Barber 24); N Bell, Goward; M Tredgett (Price 40), Thompson, R Tredgett (Pirt 13).

Saturday December 6 - London 3 South East LeagueHastings & Bexhill 11 - 34 Pul-borough

Pulborough notched up a most welcome second consecutive win – against strugglers Hastings & Bexhill in East Sussex.

Fielding a team with fi ve changes from the previous game Borough lead 15-8 at the break, going on to win comfortably with two tries from Tom Hoey, who also kicked a penal-ty and two conversions. Henry Dal-gleish, Simon Burfi end, Fenn Cad-

dick and Harry Perry also crossed the line and Frazer Oliphant-Hope converted, too.

Team manager Roger Hunt said: “Hastings & Bexhill had some in-juries but it was great to pull off our fi rst away win. We didn’t con-trol the game as well as we could have done and it was a bit scrappy at times, but we’ve managed to put some clear water between us and the chasing pack.”Borough de-spite their bonus point win, remain eighth, shaded by both Uckfi eld and Heathfi eld & Waldron because of a slightly inferior goal diff erence. To-morrow (Saturday), Borough, nine points ahead of Gillingham Ancho-rians, return home with a tough fi xture against second in the table Dartfordians, who beat Bromley last week and have won nine games from ten starts.

Saturday December 6 - Ryman League Division One SouthBurgess Hill Town 7 - 0 Hor-sham

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Burgess Hill are undoubtedly a good side, in fact following Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Newcas-tle last Saturday they are now the only team in the fi rst eight tiers of English Football who are unbeaten in the league.

However that said the total dominance and gulf in class be-tween these two sides who occupy the same division showed just how poor and lacking in ideas the Hor-nets are. The calamitous defence has now been breached twenty times in the last four matches, and that is with Horsham keeper Gareth Williams performing he-roics between the posts.

The versatile talisman and main player, Gary Charman, is now looking likely to be missing for what could be a lengthy period through injury; making things look very bleak given the Hornets lack of any good defensive and at-tacking options.

From the kick off Burgess Hill bombarded Williams’ goal and as a result of some wayward fi nish-ing the only surprise was that it took 25 minutes for them to open the scoring.

The opening goal was typical of Horsham’s defending; Tarbie was outpaced and from the harmless cross King produced a horrible clearance straight to Lee Harding

who had time and space to hit the top corner of the net. Four min-utes later the Horsham back line failed to pick up Joe Keehan who volleyed in unchallenged direct from a corner taken by starlet Greg Luer. Williams then stopped well with his legs after O’Toole was allowed to stroll through the defence, however the constant pressure told on the stroke of the break when despite Williams best eff orts Dan Perry made it three.

Troy Williams, who returned early to Grays Athletic immediately after the game, came on for the injured Harry Smith. Williams announced that this was his last game for the club on Twitter before kickoff . The game however continued as a one sided aff air with both Harding and Luer being denied by Wil-liams, who desperately needed some sort of organised defend-ing from the players in Horsham shirts in front of him.

Horsham’s only eff ort on goal in the entire match, a shot from Max Miller, was saved by Hillians keeper Josh James, the keepers only meaningful action of the 90 minutes.

Burgess Hill’s fourth came from decent play and not chaotic defending; a well hit shot inside the post from O’Toole that gave Williams no chance.

As if it wasn’t a hard enough task for Horsham, Samir Hadi was red carded after being shown

a second yellow, leaving his team to last out the remaining half hour with ten men.

Luer took the resulting free kick which was met by the head of Keehan whose diving header made it 5-0.

Twelve minutes from time Hor-sham again switched off allow-ing a throw to go unchallenged for Saunders to tap over the line. Two minutes later an unmarked O’Toole headed the ball down to Luer to score with ease.

Somehow Horsham played out the last ten

minutes without conceding again, although the over-worked Williams was called on to save eff orts from Luer and Pearson, leaving the score

as a humiliating 7-0 rout.The resurgent Walton

Casuals won at Guernsey 3-0 leaving Horsham well adrift at the foot of the table and with an enormous battle to keep their league status.

Although they have not yet played half of their fi xtures this season it would seem that noth-ing short of a number of players in and out combined with some fresh ideas can revive the Hornets fortunes and allow them to reach safety.

Horsham Team: Williams, Tar-bie, King, Hadi, Gilbert (Hills 66) Hamilton, Miller (Bidgood 78) Morley, Ampleford, Nwachukwu, Smith (Williams 45) Unused Subs: Akande, Varley.

Broadbridge Heath and two great team performances saw them win both games 4-0

Under 10 – Horsham Sparrows U10 were hosted by Heron Way and after a slow start, the team got into their stride and played some great passing football winning the both games in style. Cerys and Sam scored their fi rst goals of the season and both Joseph and Aaron were on the score sheet too. There were other scorers but with everyone passing and defending so well it was diffi cult to single out any one indi-vidual for Person of the match, so it was right to award the whole team this accolade.

Under 12 – A 5-0 away win for the team was capped by 2 goals from Charlie and Luke P and another from Sean. Man of the match was Andi.

Under 13s – In a bottom of the table clash at Ashington Cougars, Horsham Sparrows lost 6 - 2 after a poor start when they went 5 - 0 down. Once they started to compete the team pulled a couple of goals back but it was too little too late. Zak scored the team’s opening goal and was named Man of the Match for a tireless display.

Under 14 – A great home perfor-mance from the team saw them run out 2-1 winners against Ashurs-twood. In a game that saw great passing from Sparrows and plenty of commitment from both teams, it was 2 goals from Benedict C and a man of the match performance from Tom D that were enough to seal the victory.

Under 15 – The team lost away 3-1

to Heron OlympicUnder 18 Boys – The team played

their fi rst competitive game of the season but lost 6-1 to Horndean Hawks who are fl ying high in the top division.

Under 13 Girls – Another game for the team against a top of the table team and despite a good fi rst half in which they held Eastbourne to a 2-0 lead, the girls ended up losing 6-0. Both goalies played really well with Abigail being the girl of the game for her saves and speed and bravery coming off her line.

Under 15 Girls – A convincing 8-1 home win over Crawley Wasps saw the team gain momentum in the table.

Under 18 Girls – South Park 6 - 2 Sparrows. A disappointing defeat with sparrows having 70% of the play but unable to press home the advantage and caught on the break. Excellent debut as a goalkeeper by Zoe and goals from Hannah and jess kept sparrows in the game until the last 10 minutes. Chesworth Rovers U11 1 - 1 Crawley Utd U11

Chesworth put on a frosty wel-come this week, not by choice, by weather. The Crawley team came for a win, and both teams went at each other with fast paced foot-ball. Leo again kept Chesworth in the match with some outstanding saves. Crawley took the lead when some lacklustre defending let the visitors shoot and give Leo in goal no chance. Lewis had a great game, he was tasked to man mark the Crawley number 17 out of the game, and he did just that. He topped off his man of the match performance with a power drive shot from a Tom corner to tie the game 1 - 1.

Saturday December 6 - Sussex County League Div 1Horsham YMCA 6 – 3 Shoreham

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

After two straight de-feats, Horsham YMCA returned to winning ways with a comfortable 6-3 thumping of Shore-

ham in Division 1 action at Gorings Mead last Saturday.

Three goals in as many fi rst half minutes ended the game as a con-test, as Liam Hunter caressed home the opener, before Dave Brown net-ted a quick fi re double to make it 3-0 before the quarter hour mark.

The visitors pulled a goal back through defender Rob Allan midway through the half, only for YM’s top goalscorer Nick Sullivan to restore his side’s three goal advantage in added time at the end of the fi rst period.

YM’s lead was quickly extended after the break, with Hunter notch-

ing his second of the afternoon and Brown then completing his hatrick fi ve minutes later.

A young Musselmen outfi t rallied, and with the help of some poor YM defending, made it 6-2 thanks to striker Alex Laing’s lobbed eff ort with half an hour to play.

The visitors’ eff orts were soured when front man Kai Bichard was sent off for a second bookable of-fence with ten minutes left, before substitute Simon Garrivier netted a further consolation in added time.

YM manager Peter Buckland com-mented: “It’s back to winning ways, but I wasn’t totally happy with the performance. The object of the ex-ercise overall was to get the three points and we did that, but we have now got to address the negatives in the game. We scored six goals, but we conceded three stupid goals and that’s what we need to focus on. We went from ten minute spells of bril-liance during the game to ten min-ute spells of rubbish.

In a game like that when you are

so comfortably ahead, that is when you can really focus on your foot-ball and slowly drain the opposition down, instead of doing the opposite which is giving the ball away.”

Goalscorers: YM - Hunter 7, 49, D. Brown 8, 10, 54, N. Sullivan 45. Shoreham - Allan 22, Laing 61, Gar-rivier 90.

YM: Fox, Carden, Dugdale (Gath-ern 79) O’Carroll, Evans, Gedling, Hunter, D. Brown, Curtis (J. Brown 63) Hibbert (D. Sullivan 71) N. Sul-livan. Unused Subs: Gault.

Tuesday December 9 - Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Round 3Horsham YMCA 0 – 1 Lewes

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Horsham YMCA failed to repeat their Sussex Senior Challenge Cup heroics of last season, as a 92nd minute Lewes winner sent them crashing out in the third round of this year’s competition at Gorings Mead on Tuesday evening.

YM beat the Rooks 4-1 at the same stage of the cup last campaign, and they will be disappointed not to have conquered their Ryman Pre-mier League superiors again, fol-lowing an impressive display that was undeserving of defeat.

Lewes squandered the better chances of a fruitless fi rst half, but the hosts found their feet after the break as winger Dave Brown hit the post and then had a sharp strike parried by Rooks’ goalkeeper Rikki Banks.

But with the tie seemingly headed for extra time, the visitors broke YM hearts when striker Leroy Griffi ths netted the game’s only goal two minutes into added time.

YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “I am very proud of the players tonight. I think that we were the much better side in the

second half and that’s not just me being biased.

“It just confi rms my belief that we play better against better sides. It suits us better when a team tries to play football instead of the blood and thunder, fl ying tackles and long balls of the Sussex County League. The sooner we can get up in and amongst the Ryman League boys the better.

“I’ve said to the players that they should be disappointed that they’ve lost to a 92nd minute goal against a Ryman Premier League side, but

that they can also hold their heads up high because not a single person will leave this ground tonight with-out some admiration for YMCA.

“We can now totally focus on the league. We’ve got Pagham away on Saturday and then Hassocks down here a week tonight, so I’ll be looking to get six points out of those games.”

YM (4-5-1): Lockwood, Carden (J. Brown 79), Crane, O’Carroll, Ev-ans, Gedling, Dugdale (c), D. Brown, Hunter (Hibbert 68), D. Sullivan, Smith (Curtis 68). Unused Subs: Fox, Gannon.

Saturday December 6 - Sussex County League Div 1Hassocks 1 - 2 Broadbridge Heath

Heath continued their recent good form with a good victory against Hassocks.

In a season that has seen Steve Painter struggle to get any consist-ency in team selection due to a num-ber of injuries this match was no diff erent with Martyn Flack and Dan Attwater unavailable for the trip.

In a fi rst half hour that saw a lot of shared possession but limited goal action Merv Bhujun had the best of the early chances when he lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper but then fi red wide of the empty net. This miss encouraged Heath however who, following a number of successive corners, scored when Jack McNab squeezed his header in at the far post to give Heath a de-served lead.

It should have been 2-0 when Bhujun broke away but again was unable to convert the chance, once again shooting wide. Hassocks might have levelled when careless

defending allowed Hassocks Fisher space and time but Heath keeper Fisher saved bravely at his feet.

The second half continued with Heath on top and when Jamal Sul-tan was put in by Ollie Moore he buried his shot in the far corner to double Heaths lead. Steve Painter started to use his subs bench which consisted of 5 forwards. Tiago An-drade came on for his second run out after 3 months absence through injury, new signing Keiran Grieg replaced Bhujun and Jake Legrange took over from Adam Wicking with Sultan dropping back into defence

With ten minutes remaining the lively Johnson pulled a goal back for Hassocks setting up a tense fi nish during which Heath keeper Fisher ensured all three points with a couple of great saves. With Flack, Attwater, McDermott and Howard all possibly returning next week, manager Painter will at last be able to start picking from a nearly full squad with only Jamie Wanstall, Kieran Purkiss and Danny Mobsby awaiting operations. Heath have come out of a very diffi cult period sitting comfortably in mid table with an opportunity to push on in the second half of the season.

Heath Team: Fisher, Wicking (Legrange), Bevan, Carruthers, Bal-four, Waddingham, Moore, Godfrey, Mcnab (Andrade), Bhujun (Greig), Sultan. Unused Subs: Taylor, Love.
