Lucas Kovacs, a year 13 pupil at Christ’s Hospital School, Hor-sham, has received an Exhibition Award along with a cheque for gaining one of the highest dis-tinction marks in the country in a practical drum kit exam from Trinity College, London.

Lucas is now working towards his grade 8 exams on the drum kit, the snare drum and the fl ute. As well as playing in the School band, concert band and the percussion ensemble, he sings in the choir and is a self-taught pianist.

Lucas said: “It was joining the School’s marching band that ini-tially introduced me to snare drum-ming and Christ’s Hospital has provided me with the very best op-portunities to develop my passion for music and to perform. I have participated in the Lord Mayor’s

Show and at Lord’s cricket ground plus this summer we toured Ger-many and Belgium. I believe that Christ’s Hospital has really ampli-fi ed my love for music. I am cur-rently applying to universities in this country and abroad and I hope that this award will support my uni-versity applications.

“I think one of the reasons why I enjoy music so much is that the discipline required will always ren-der a beautiful and skilful perfor-mance, no matter what instrument you play. There is nothing quite like knowing that anything you have achieved with music is because of the time and eff ort that you put in. I will defi nitely continue my pursuit of music in the future and, if I have the opportunity to perform in con-certs and events, I will defi nitely do so.”

Home Office Immigration En-forcement officers arrested three suspected immigration offenders from Bangladesh during an opera-tion on Thursday, December 11.

Officers visited Spice Nights Takeaway, Queen Street, Horsh-am, at about 5pm where staff were questioned about their immigration status.

Three men, aged 34, 43 and 45, were arrested on suspicion of immi-gration offences. They were inter-viewed and have since been granted temporary release while their cases are progressed. They will have to report regularly to the Home Office during this time.

A spokesperson for the Home Of-fice said: “Spice Nights Takeaway was served a notice warning they are liable for a financial penalty of up to £20,000 per illegal worker, unless they provide evidence that legally-required pre-employment checks were carried out, such as seeing a Home Office document or passport. This is a total potential fine of £60,000.”

Assistant Director Richard Led-erle, from the Kent & Sussex Home Office Immigration Enforcement team, said: “Businesses who em-ploy illegal workers are defrauding the taxpayer, undercutting genuine employers and denying work to le-gitimate job hunters.

“We are happy to work with em-ployers who want to play by the rules but those who break the law will face the consequences.

“People with detailed and specific information about suspected immi-gration abuse should contact us.”

Information to help employers carry out checks to prevent illegal working can be found at www.gov.uk/government/collections/em-ployers-illegal-working-penalties. It includes a quick answer right-to-work tool to help employers check if someone has the right to work in the UK.

Thanks to the families in Maple-hurst and a generous donation from the Rotary Club of Hor-sham, Heartbeat have just in-stalled its third community ac-cess defibrillator (cPad).

This unit is located on the outside wall at the White Horse Inn in Ma-plehurst and complements the sec-ond unit installed outside the Black Horse Inn in Nuthurst last Spring and the first unit installed in winter of 2012 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Mannings Heath.

All three cPAD’s are simple to use, fully automatic battery pow-ered heart start machine that can be used by the public, as easy to follow, step by step, visual and audible prompts are provided by the defibrillator.

The portable defibrillators are housed inside bright yellow weatherproof cabinets allowing quick 24/7 access via a standard

key code, that is known to the lo-cal Ambulance Service, local First Responders and local residents.

If used within a few minutes on someone who has stopped breathing and is receiving Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), the use of a defibrillator will sig-

nificantly increase their chance of survival following cardiac arrest.

If you would like to support the Nuthurst Parish Heartbeat Team or know more about their work in the Community of Nuthurst, you can contact their Chairman Chris Beer on 01403 257901.

Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault on a man in his 20s and a second man in his 40s who were attacked in Spierbridge Road, Storrington, in the early hours of Saturday, December 6.

The victims were at their home address when at around midnight they heard a car being damaged

outside. On going out to investigate they were attacked by a group of up to eight men in their 20s.

The older man sustained a hair-line facial fracture and cuts that needed stitching.

Detective Constable Paul Tonks said: “This was a deliberate at-tack that had the potential for far

more serious injury. The local area is small enough that someone will know about this, and we would ask them to come forward.”

Anyone who witnessed the inci-dent or who has other information is asked to email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting se-rial 0015 of 6/12.

Alternatively they can call the in-dependent charity Crimestoppers free and anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Serious assault in Storrington

A ground floor flat in Arthur Road, Horsham became smoke logged shortly after midnight on Thursday, December 11 after unattended cook-ing on the hob caused a small fire.

The fire alarm was sounding in the flat and the male occupant was led to safety and medically assessed by ambulance paramedics.

The three fire crews from Hor-sham attended the incident from 12.06am to 12.39am and used two breathing apparatus, and a hose reel to extinguish the fire. The flat was ventilated using a Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) fan.

Unattended cooking also caused a small fire in a kitchen in a house in the High Street, Billingshurst on Tuesday, December 9 at around 12.15pm. A hose reel, two breathing apparatus and a PPV fan were used by the two fire crews that attended the incident.

Both fires have been ruled as ac-cidental. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service have said that more than half of accidental fires at home are started by cooking and many happen when people are not paying attention, or they leave cooking unattended.

On Friday, November 23, The For-est School welcomed an inspiring past pupil over its threshold. Ste-ven Hall, who attended the school back in 1994 - 1999, works as a Government Civil Servant, having served an influential role in par-liamentary plans under the wing of major politicians such as Tony Blair and, currently, Nick Clegg.

Steven referred to his time at-tending the all-boys comprehen-sive school as the ‘golden days’, though we sensed an inkling of sat-ire beneath his remark. He noted that the school had undergone an amazing transformation; however he would always appreciate his time here. Previously wishing to pursue a career in writing or music, discov-ered a love of politics in his later years at the school.

Following a tour around his old school, Steven was subjected to a grilling from a selection of attentive pupils. We started off our questions easily, asking about an average day in the office, before delving head-first into the world of politics.

Steven was extremely honest, open and motivating with his an-swers, leaving few details un-men-tioned. I found it hugely admirable to see how much a passion he radi-ated for his job, though I suppose surprise helicopter rides with the Deputy Prime Minister are nothing worthy of complaint.

The role of a Civil Servant requires that Stephen be neither biased nor linked to any particular political ide-

ology. Steven occasionally even has to write up campaigns for the Lib-eral Democrats, when he was pre-viously writing against them when the Labour Party was in power.

“Two opposing documents can be circulating at the same time, both with my name credited as the author,” Steven explained, “it can sometimes be incredibly odd, but likewise very interesting – it defi-nitely keeps me on my toes!”

Giving us a rare and intimate in-sight into our present Government, Steven captivated us with his hilari-ous anecdotes. Being interrogated on British political knowledge by Nick Clegg himself, albeit feeling slightly under the weather during an emergency helicopter ride, is just one perk of the job. One thing that we pupils found most interesting was that COBRA actually stands for ‘Cabinet Office Briefing Room A’ and is, in fact, not a clandestine name for a group who covertly run the coun-try. COBRA attendees eat custard creams just like the rest of us.

Steven was also on hand for The Forest School’s annual Awards Even-ing, congratulating our class of 2014 on their achievements from their time here. He provided a fascinating speech about life after secondary school, which was also very motivational.

It was very encouraging to listen to someone speak with such pas-sion for his role. Steven Hall has experienced great success in recent years; something inspirational for all current Forest pupils particular-ly, knowing that he was previously sitting with an abundance of aspi-rations in the same classrooms that we sit in today.

Members of Horsham Fitness, keen to surpass the success of their 2013 “Burpees Challenge”, came up with a fun and energetic “Farmers Walk” weight carrying marathon event.

Braving the cold at 8am on Sat-urday, December 13, eight teams of four participants carried metal kettlebells weighing between 8 and 24kg each across a 50 metre course.

The aim was to cover at least the distance of a full marathon – 26 miles – between all the teams within the one hour duration of the event. Cheered on by family and friends, the teams rose to this chal-lenge and covered 52,900 metres in total – over 32 miles.

The event was organised by Hor-sham Fitness partners Mark Sillett and Katie Warman to raise money for Horsham’s Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee special school. Partic-ipants each paid £5 to take part and there was also a fundraising raffle.

The event raised approximately £300 for the school. Mark said: “Lo-cal charity is what we’re trying to do. It’s great to be able to support this

lovely school that is so close to us.”He went on to thank everyone

who had taken part, which included not only clients of Horsham Fitness but also a team made up of staff and a student from QEII School. There was definitely a festive mood, with many of those taking part compet-

ing in Christmas jumpers and hats. Despite the chilly weather everyone soon warmed up once they’d started shifting their heavy weights. Once the hour was up, though, they were very glad of hot drinks and snacks provided by Horsham Rugby Club’s café.

Christmas shoppers across Sus-sex are being warned to keep an eye on their valuables as shopping centres and streets become busier with just under a week to go until Christmas.

Operation Tinsel aims to reduce incidents of theft, anti-social be-haviour and to reduce the fear of crime. Leading up to the festive season there tends to be an in-crease in retail thefts.

In the Horsham area, Sussex Po-lice are targeting shoplifters in the run up to Christmas. Officers will be conducting high-visibility pa-trols throughout the festive period to identify and target offenders by various means including uni-formed and plain clothes patrols, utilising the Shopwatch radio sys-tem and CCTV and working in part-nership with shops and licensed premises.

Purse thefts tend to increase around this time of year as the shops get more crowded in the busy pre-Christmas period and there is often an increase in this type of crime.

By taking some simple crime

prevention measures, people can reduce the risk of becoming a vic-tim of theft.

Keep your bag closed and close to you at all times, held securely under your arm or strapped across your body if possible.

Never leave bags unattended - e.g. on a trolley, pushchair or wheelchair.

Be aware of anyone acting sus-piciously, such as getting too close to you or trying to distract you by bumping into you - such behaviour should be reported to police, secu-rity or shop staff immediately.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash around with you and don’t let anyone see what’s in your purse or wallet as you are paying.

Never keep your PIN number with your bank cards.

Sergeant Vicky Tomlinson said: “If anyone is thinking about vis-iting our local towns to commit crime then think again. We’re sending out a strong message to thieves that shoplifting and theft will not be tolerated. Offenders caught stealing can expect to be dealt with robustly.”

Four local Secondary Schools, Tanbridge House, Forest, Millais and The Weald have teamed up to work on a collaborative char-ity project aimed for the Spring of 2015. Although this is a fantastic activity in itself, alongside this, it is a great opportunity for some of the students from the four schools to work together.

The student-led project, known as ‘Fourshor’ (standing for “Four Schools in Horsham’), represents the culmination of ongoing work between students and staff from Tanbridge House, Forest, Millais and The Weald.

The overriding aims are to pro-mote cooperation between the schools and make a positive differ-ence in the local community by rais-

ing awareness and funds for charity. The result of the planning will be

a series of charity concerts taking place at each of the four schools during February and March, 2015.

An extremely enthusiastic team of student representatives from each of the schools have been meeting regularly over the past year and are currently busy auditioning and shortlisting acts for next year’s concerts.

Charlie Brooker, a Year 10 stu-dent from Tanbridge involved in the project said: “Fourshor is a group consisting of student representa-tives from each of the four Hor-sham secondary schools. We are very fortunate to have several high performing schools in the Horsham District. Despite each school being very good, we are better together than we ever could be alone.”

A team of four children from Hol-brook Primary School in Horsham fought off competition from 1,300 teams across the UK and have been crowned the winners of the National Young Mathematicians’ Awards.

The year six pupils, including Tala Hancock-Clark, Sophie Wythers, George Ingram, and Josh Hayes, were presented with their prize by the famous statistician, Sir David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge Univer-sity, and Carey Ann Dodah, head of curriculum at Explore Learning.

Now in its fi fth year, the contest is run by tuition provider, Explore Learning, and the NRICH Project at the University of Cambridge. The main aim of the competition is to encourage children to see the fun that maths can bring while inspir-ing them to be competitive.

Carey Ann Dodah said: “We’ve had more entrants into the National Young Mathematicians’ Awards

than ever before, making it the toughest year yet so the team from Holbrook have done so well to be crowned champions. They really impressed the judges with their en-thusiasm, their teamwork, and their ability to get to the root of the prob-lems in a tactical and logical way.”

Tala, Sophie, George and Josh completed three rounds of math challenges before being named the winners. They had to solve a mul-ti-layered, high-level problem and were assessed on their ability to be systematic in their approach, to work well as a team and to get to the root of the problem.

Ian Holmes, head teacher at Hol-brook Primary School, said: “We are absolutely thrilled and delighted for our team to have won. We are very proud of the children who are a real credit to the school. They really em-bodied the ethos of the school which is encapsulated in our motto ‘Aim-ing High, Succeeding Together’.”

The Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) Horsham and Storrington Branch has raised £1,000 this year from donations given at their weekly coff ee mornings. Held at their club in the Needles Farm Buildings, Three Acres, Horsham, the coff ee morning runs every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm.

The coff ee morning is open to members and non-members and the club’s members are mainly those who served in the RAF or the widows of service men. The club are keen for all generations to join them, share their stories and keep the club going.

The coff ee morning is held at the club’s bar and there is also a mu-

seum upstairs so there is plenty to see for those wishing to go along for a tea or coff ee and a biscuit.

Elaine Britton, the club’s welfare offi cer, told The District Post: “This amount raised is a landmark for us, it’s a good amount to raise for a small club. The money will be redis-tributed to those in need.

“Anyone who comes along to our coff ee morning can donate any

amount for a tea or coff ee and we have cake and biscuits too. There is a lot of people who live near the club and it would be great for them to pop in. It’s closer than a walk into town and you can just give what you can for your refreshments, we don’t have set prices.

A 23-year-old from Five Oaks recently told The District Post about his success on the Greek is-land of Zante and now

has regular DJ spots in the UK. Oli Leslie – DJ OLi – has always liked music and really liked the Djing side of it.

He launched his career in 2012 by joining DNA Kids, a mobile DJ agen-cy specialising in an array of events for children and adults and enjoyed the work he did.

Oli said: “I remember working at a kids party and seeing 100 kids go-ing mad to Gangham Style and lov-ing the music for two hours. I knew then that DJing was what I wanted to do.

“I threw myself into it but it was hard to get my name out in the UK so I decided to go to Zante in the summer of 2013. A bar there loved me. I worked as a warm up DJ then was asked to do the main crowd and it went really well. I was offered a main slot and did boat parties and bar crawls.

“I found myself being asked to play by a big club. It all gave me mo-tivation and encouragement to take back to the UK.”

Some of his successes include playing at Ibiza Rocks and 2013, at Aquila in London at the Made in

Chelsea after party, and in Crawley where an Only Way in Essex cast member appeared.

Oli has a sports coaching degree and works full time but he still manages to fit in work as a DJ. He has a regular slot on Southstar Ra-dio on Wednesday from 10pm to 12am before heading to Angelique Bar in Crawley on Thursday and Friday nights. On Saturday nights, Oli frees himself up to go to vari-ous locations around the UK and has played in Horsham, Brighton, London, and recently in the West Midlands.

“Summer 2013 turned my ca-reer as a DJ around. I became well-known around the Greek islands but it was very difficult back in the UK as it’s a niche market to get into. I struggled between August and De-cember 2013 but in February 2014 I started playing at Angelique and they were great. They gave me slots and I now have regular work there.

“In 2015 I will keep doing the same thing, keep self-promoting and I will be heading to Cancun in the New Year.”

Oli has his own website and has created mix tapes to promote him-self. He takes bookings and plays at weddings and has a 21st birthday party slot booked. To find out more or to book him for an event, visit www.djolileslie.com.

Christmas in the 1930s is evoked in the new exhibition at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, recalling those years when the Victorian image of the season’s festivities gave way to the celebration we know and love today.

In those days Christmas began on Christmas Eve, not in mid-August, when the family gathered to deco-rate the tree. By the 1930s tinsel and cheap metal decorations com-mon, bought in shops now gone such as Woolworths. Electric fairy lights were then becoming popular, although candles were still widely used to light Christmas trees. Many of the features of Christmas we take for granted today, such as Carols from King’s College, Cambridge,

and the Queen’s Speech, began in the 1930s, although popular enter-tainment was then found on the radio, as the fi rst regular television broadcasts (and then only to a very few households) did not start until near the end of the thirties.

Board games were enormously pop-ular, appealing to both children and adults; they helped bring the family together on Christmas Day. The chil-dren’s market saw a large number of special annuals produced each year in the 1930s, led by new favourites such the Beano and the Dandy.

The ‘Vintage Christmas’ exhibi-tion features toys and gifts, historic decorations and domestic items from that era, all drawn from the Museum’s collections: a perfect way to compare Christmas Past with Christmas Present.

‘Vintage Christmas’ is open un-til Wednesday 31 December 2014 at Horsham District Council’s Horsh-am Museum & Art Gallery.

One of the most important books about the Battle of Britain is to be republished on June 30 2015, marking the 75th anniversary of a key moment in British history.

Frontline Books, the editorial of-fice of which is based in Storrington, has struck a deal to publish the third edition of Men of the Battle of Britain by Kenneth G. Wynn, which gives mini biographies of nearly 3,000 Allied airmen who fought in the Battle in 1940. The book will be brought out in conjunction with the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, the custodian of the National Memorial to The Few at Capel-le-Ferne, Kent. The Trust owns all rights to Men of the Battle of Britain.

Martin Mace, publisher at Front-line, said: “This will be a momen-tous event for all those interested in the history of the summer and autumn of 1940 when RAF Fighter Command was at the forefront of ending the threat of German inva-

sion and Sussex people going about their daily lives saw the struggle for supremacy going on over their heads. A number of publishers were keen to do a deal for Ken Wynn’s iconic book. We are delighted to work with the Battle of Britain Me-

morial Trust to publish the first new edition for 15 years.”

Geoff Simpson, a trustee of the Memorial Trust, said: “Since its first publication in 1989 Men of the Bat-tle of Britain has become a vital part of the collection of any student of the battle, as well as providing fas-cinating reading material for a wid-er public. The 2015 edition will have much fresh information, as well as new photographs of men who took part.”

Frontline Books was established in 2007 to publish high quality, detailed books on military history throughout the ages. It is an im-print of the Barnsley-based Pen & Sword group of publishers, which has been established for more than twenty-five years.

Further details will be announced in due course. For more informa-tion, visit www.frontline-books.com and www.battleofbritainme-morial.org

Storrington publisher celebrates Battle of Britain deal

Last week, staff and residents at Care South’s Sussexdown care home in Storrington and the Friends of Sussexdown Commit-tee invited their friends, families and the local community to join them in spreading some Christ-mas cheer at the home’s annual Christmas Fayre.

Each year, the Friends of Sussex-down Committee holds the Christ-mas Fayre at the home in order to raise money for Sussexdown’s Resi-dents’ Amenity Fund. Funds raised during the Fayre will go towards buying Christmas presents for all residents and staff at the home, and will help fund the Christmas party.

The Fayre was declared officially open by the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Mr Jonathan Lucas and his wife Caroline, who stayed to join in the fun and meet Sussexdown’s residents. Visitors were able to browse a range of stalls, providing plenty of inspiration for Christmas presents for all the family. Resi-

dents had been very busy before-hand, making hand-crafted Christ-mas cards and decorations to sell on their own stall.

Younger visitors were delighted to explore the home’s very own San-ta’s Grotto, where Father Christmas was in residence throughout the afternoon. The Fayre also gave visitors the chance to enjoy a cup of tea and a mince pie with the home’s res-idents and for eve-ryone to get to know one another better.

Sally Williams, Chairman of the Friends of Sussexdown, said: “The Christmas Fayre is a great op-portunity for staff and residents to invite family, friends and the lo-cal community to join them and spread a little festive cheer. We are delighted with the amount that we have raised for the home’s Resi-dents’ Amenity Fund, which ena-

bles us to continue to provide an in-teresting and stimulating activities programme for our residents.”

Home Manager at Care South’s Sussexdown, Heather Rogers, add-ed: “Our Christmas Fayre is a real highlight of the year for residents

and staff and we hope every-one who visited the Fayre

enjoyed it as much as we did. We’d like to say a big thank you to the Friends of Sus-sexdown for their continued support in making the Christmas

Fayre such a special event.”The Friends of Sussex-

down Committee raises mon-ey to provide activities, entertain-ment and outings for the residents of Sussexdown.

Believe it or not, if it were not for the likes of Charles Dickens we would not be celebrating Christ-mas. According to legend, before the publication of his ‘Christmas Carol’, the celebration was fall-ing out of fashion. Indeed, many parishes no longer observed any special rites excepting the mass on the day itself.

If you have hung mistletoe up, then you are following an obser-vance that possibly dates back to Pliny in CE 77. It is surely a bringer of good luck and it is said is a great aid to fertility. However, there is no evidence of any connection to dru-ids. Accordingly eat 12 mince pies given by 12 diff erent people and you will have a year of good luck.

Of course the whole season is one long set of observances in Christi-anity. St Thomas’ day on December 21, is the day that traditionally our elder women would go from door to door asking for ‘gifts’ to see them

through winter. Then once the rounds had been done they’d move onto the church to collect legacies or purses from the wardens.

Of course there is Christmas, which, if one follows the old system does not actually start until after midday on the 25th – Christmas Eve being the morning of the 25th.

Then one has St Steven’s day on the 26th – another day for the poor to collect ‘charity’ from the rich landowners and when the church-es shared out the money from the collection boxes - hence the name ‘Boxing Day’. It is also the day tradesmen and servants collect presents from their clients or mas-ters. (Hint).

Then of course we have Decem-ber the 28th. Childermas Day. The day of penance where we remember Herod’s murder of the fi rst born. As it is an unlucky day, strictly no work should be undertaken – that includes cooking or washing up. A sprig of Rosemary should be hung above the front door to ward off ill luck.

After all that, if you were wonder-ing what twelfth night means, well it is the old Christmas (or the true Christmas if you are Gnostic). Of course this is the day some would say is the day you strip naked, drink lots of cider and go Wassailing in your orchard. In actual fact you can ‘wassail’ at any time over Christ-mastide. There is also the belief that decorations come down on this day. Well according to older tradi-tions you have all the way up un-til Candlemas on February 2, so no rush there.

In the garden, plant your shallots and broad beans on Christmas day as they are said to be the best fl a-voured and the most likely to suc-ceed.

Which leaves me just enough space to wish you all a splendid Christmas!

Oh, by the way, for my Jewish friends; Happy Hannukah!.

I must also say a blessed Milad un Nabi for the beginning of January to my Muslim friends.

GARDENING: Bah! Humbug! It’s Christmas

The fi nal Friday before Christ-mas and for many this has been the last whole week of work, of school, or possibly both.

Traditionally this is the time of year when people fi nish as-sembling lists of presents to purchase and then consider their lists of things which 2014 have brought them.

Not being one to stand in the way of tradi-tion, not that often anyway, I present to you my fi ve things for 2015.

At number fi ve and open-ing the year I hope that the oncoming elec-tions both local and national will invigorate the pub-lic to take more care over soundbite criticism and headline fact checking. A little more skepticality in asking better questions in administra-tion and decisions.

Fourth on the list is a desire to see more park usage across the district. Horsham Parkrun; already a very popular Saturday morning diversion proves what a valuable resource large amounts of open green are to the public wellbeing. We would do well to look to the other open fi elds in our Town and ask how we might better appreciate them.

At three is the wish that no

matter the outcome of the Gat-wick expansion that CAGNE will grasp the issue of air qual-ity fi rmly and fi ght to insist that ground level impact of expansion and new developments should be reduced signifi cantly. Air quality in the South of England will re-duce rapidly as we over populate our part of England.

Then at number two is the desire to see more investment, support, and promotion of Arts and Science in Horsham from Schools to Clubs and Businesses. Physical health alone will not

a well body make; and the heart and mind of each

individual benefi t from an expres-

sion in art and the creative dis-coveries of sci-ence and tech-nology.

Finally and in fi rst place,

for very per-sonal and selfi sh

reasons, it is time the North of Horsham

grew into its identity as the Heart of Horsham. So much of the District travels through this part on a daily basis that we should view its contribution not in terms of dumping grounds for development or access roads but as the pulse of a commu-nity around which many wish to smother with additional devel-opments.

The new year will bring the chance for change, the chance for growth and the chance for stagnation. What we choose to do with those opportunities is for each of us to decide.

Ann SwainChair, Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sus-sex FSB

Roger Paterson, Cabinet Member for Economic Development at Hor-sham District Council joined Ann Swain, Chair

of the local branch of Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and Committee members, John Hilder and Geoff Williamson in visiting small retailers in Horsham.

Bedford Sports owned by Peter and Frances Bedford, has special-ised in providing awards and tro-phies for sporting and other special occasions for over 30 years from their shop in Lambs Farm Road, Roffey.

From a specialist shop to one typical of many in Horsham, Un-dercutting in the Brighton Road. They were offering two special deals to clients on Saturday. Tania Flint-Clarke started her business working from home. She soon grew and three years ago moved from Southwater to her current prem-ises in Horsham.

Ann Swain, Chair of Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex FSB com-mented: “It is good to be able to highlight two such very different small businesses in Horsham, both of which typify some of the charac-teristics of many of our small busi-nesses.

“Bedford Sports is one of the many niche businesses which Hor-sham is keen to encourage as part of its shopping experience. Horsh-am is well known for its support for these businesses, not least through the annual Microbiz event, which we are proud to be sponsoring again in 2015, as we have done since its launch thirteen years ago.”

Roger Paterson said: “Horsham District Council welcomes Small Business Saturday as a brilliant way of supporting the small business community.

“The Council embraced Small Business Saturday by not only sup-porting local small businesses, but also helping budding entrepre-neurs from two Horsham schools. Seven business teams from Mil-lais and Farlington Girls schools pitched up their stalls in Hor-sham’s Carfax market to sell their products as part of their participa-tion in the Young Enterprise an-nual Company programme.”

Horsham District Council has become renowned for its support for small businesses and in 2010 were the proud winners of the Fed-eration of Small Businesses, Local Authority Small Business Friendly Award. HDC supports the small business community through its organisation of annual events: The 13th annual Microbiz aimed at all small businesses and anyone thinking of starting a business will

be held on 14th March 2015. Micro-biz provides business visitors with everything they will need in one place on one day, including a vast array of local business products and services, business networking and free business workshops all day offering top tips and inspira-tion.

The annual Horsham District Food & Drink Festival is also cel-ebrating its 13th birthday in 2015. The Festival is a celebration of the fantastic locally produced food and drink in the District which is also sponsored by the local FSB as part if our Keep Trade Local Campaign as it promotes local prducers. For those passionate about food and drink and where it comes from there is also now a Local Food and Drink Guide, a showcase of the very best in local produce from the Dis-trict. The Festival has grown con-siderably over the years and now incorporates Steyning and District Food and Drink Festival.

The Food and Drink Festival is launched by a weekend of The Big Nibble, attracting thousands of visitors into Horsham Town, pro-viding small businesses with the opportunity to promote and show off their fabulous produce. Many of these are now FSB Members as we have a regular presence at this event. The Big Nibble has grown to include The Little Nibble and Hor-sham Bake Off.

In partnership with

Local fi rm RG Solicitors have raised over £5,500 during Will Aid in November.

This December and January, 2015, RG Solicitors, with offi ces in Sidcup, Horsham and York, is off ering its Will clients the opportunity to ar-range a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and will cover the usual reg-istration fee of £110!

RG took part in Will Aid to help raise as much money as possible for this amazing cause. They drew up Wills without charging for their time, in the hope that their cli-ents would make a donation to the Will Aid charities instead of paying them. The suggested donation level was £95 for a single Will and £150 for mirror Wills; and they did not earn a penny.

The money raised will be shared

by nine of the UK’s best known charities, all of whom work to trans-form the lives of people in the UK and around the world: Ac-tion Aid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, Sightsav-ers, SCIAF (Scot-land) and Trocaire (N. Ireland).

Making a Will is one of the most thoughtful and im-portant things you can do to protect those you love. Yet it is sur-prising that fewer than half of people have made one. Most say they simply haven’t got around to it, and yet it can take years to sort out someone’s estate if they die

without a Will - leaving their near-est and dearest in great distress.

It is not too late to make a Will and take advantage of RG’s

LPA off er. So, grasp the opportunity to make a

proper, valid Will to ensure your wishes will be carried out after your death, and to avoid the kind of family dis-putes, fi nancial

worries and legal battles that can en-

sue when someone dies without a Will.

For further information about RG Solicitors; or to make a Will with them, please call: RG So-licitors on 020 8269 9901 or visit www.rgsolicitors.co.uk.

The lawyers that never run out of Will power

On Saturday, December 13, AVS Fencing Supplies played host to over 160 guests at the Selsdon Park Hotel in Surrey, for the fi rst ever AVS Christmas Char-ity Ball.

Generous customers, suppliers and staff of AVS dug deep to help raise £8000 for two very deserving charities, Macmil-lan Cancer Support and Rockinghorse Children’s Char-ity, both of which were represented on the night.

Tom Carter, of Macmillan said: “Do-nations make up 98% of Macmillan’s income, so events like this make a huge diff erence for us and the lives of the people we support. We are extremely thankful.”

Rockinghorse, Head of Fund-raising, Analiese Doctrove said:

“Our aim is to improve the lives of sick children throughout Sus-sex, and the contributions gen-erated at the AVS charity ball are crucial to help us continue to do this.”

Money was raised through ticket sales, auctions, raf-

fl es, and games, or-chestrated on the

night by AVS sales and marketing di-rector, Nick Sum-mers: “We are so pleased to be able to utilise our po-

sition as a leading UK fencing supplier

to raise money and awareness for these two

charities. We can’t thank our customers, suppliers and staff enough for their heart-warming display of generosity”.

Last Saturday (December 13) the Horsham Twinning Association together with the German Club and French Club of Horsham met at the Unitarian Church for the an-nual International Carol Concert.

Everybody joined in as the Pleas-ure Singers Choir performed carols in English, French as well as Ger-man.

With the help of the hymn sheets, even members of the audience with little foreign language knowledge took part in the singing.

After the concert mulled wine helped to refresh the vocal cords and also the mince pies, cheese and biscuits were most welcome.

A not so silent night

FarlingtonSchool

Pupils at Farlington have entered into the spirit of Christmas by raising money for good causes, participating in Christmas festivi-ties and delivering chocolates to those more vulnerable in the com-munity.

The Senior School girls donated and delivered over 100 boxes of chocolates this week to St Marga-ret’s Court, Clemsfold House and Horsham Matters.

The staff and Senior girls joined together for a Christmas ‘sing-a-long’ and on Friday morning girls in Reception and Prep 1 toured the School with music teacher Mr Dal-limore singing Jingle Bells and Ru-dolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Nursery, Reception, Prep 1 and 2 pupils enjoyed performing this year’s Nativity play, ‘Are We Nearly There Yet?’, a feel-good perfor-mance that got everyone’s feet tap-ping.

Farlington Prep School’s Chris-tingle service was held in St. Mary’s Church, Horsham. From the first

carol, with Year 6 pupils process-ing up the dimly-lit aisle with their glowing Christingles, to the final triumphant ‘O Come, all ye Faith-ful’ the mood was dignified and joy-ous, with every member of Years 3 – 6 singing a variety of festive carols with tunefulness and confidence.

A truly lovely start to the Christ-mas season and over £400 was raised for Chestnut Tree House.

The Senior Carol Service also in St Mary’s Church, Horsham featured a 70-strong candle-lit procession, the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, and mov-ing Christmas music from the four choirs and soloists, together with evocative and varied readings.

Original choral items composed by A level pupils Olivia Middleton and Katie Wycliffe added a very personal touch. Over £100 was raised for the charity, Shooting Star CHASE.

The term’s festivities were rounded-off by a spectacular Christmas lunch for girls and staff, served by head mistress, Louise Higson, and assistant head mis-tress, Mandy Higgs, with help from the Sixth Formers.

Neil MooreManaging Director, Guy Leonard & Co

Neil Moore, MD at Guy Leonard & Co Estate tells a heart-warming Christmas story.

Scrooge had been trying to sell his house all year - but to no eff ect. He was fed up with cold winters and longed to move to Spain where he had found a fl at at a knockdown price being sold by a desperate developer. Now it was Christmas again and there was still no sign of a buyer for his own house. Scrooge hated Christmas.

Bob, at the local estate agent, Cratchit and Co, had almost giv-en up on ever selling the house. Scrooge was far too mean to put the lights on inside or light the fi re to make the house look cosy and inviting. Instead it was un-welcoming and cold. A better word would be frigid. He refused to let people see the house when they wanted to and only allowed viewings when it was conveni-ent for him. The few off ers he had received he had treated with derision - even though the ask-ing price was really far too high - which put everyone off taking it any further. Scrooge was even in-sisting that any buyer would have to purchase, at extra cost, the threadbare carpets and even some wet logs at the end of the garden which he described as fi rewood.

That night Scrooge had three disturbing dreams. The fi rst viv-idly showed him what life had been like before he had become so mean and his wife had left him. The second dream showed Christ-mas dinner at his estate agent’s house. It was a jovial family aff air with Bob, his wife and their small son, Tim, all enjoying themselves. But slowly the scene changed to show what life would be like if Bob couldn’t sell any houses and had no money. The third dream showed Scrooge’s grave. He had died an embittered old man who had never sold his mausoleum of a house or moved to sunny Spain.

Waking up in his bed Scrooge realised that wasn’t too late. He raced round the house put-ting lights on and setting the fi re ablaze in the living room. He then rushed down to see Bob at Cratch-it & Co, and told him to reduce the price immediately and to tell everyone that he would heartily entertain any reasonable off ers. Scrooge even told Bob that he would increase the commission if the house was sold quickly.

So Scrooge did sell his house and moved to Spain where he en-joyed many long years in the sun. He even met an attractive widow in the local tapas bar that he went to often. Scrooge never forgot to send Bob a Christmas card, as without all Bob’s hard work he would never have had his new life.

The moral of this story is to be as accommodating with potential buyers as possible and always try and fi nd an estate agent like Bob. Guy Leonard and Co in Horsham is just such a fi rm as Cratchit & Co. Call us - we might change your life.

Happy Christmas everyone - with apologies to Charles Dickens.

Start the New Year with a new approach! Not only can you save on Stamp Duty Fees where they have been reduced but

there is a new estate agent in town, offering a friendly service and competitive fees who can potentially work 24/7 as it is all about client.

Wells Independent Property Broker is an online estate agent that runs using cloud software and solely by Rob Wells. Rob of-fers customers almost 10 years personal experience working in the property market.

Rob said: “Working as an inde-pendent agent I can offer custom-ers a personal, honest service and go the extra mile. I also have the flexibility to fully carry out the work that needs to be done, and with no set targets, my clients are not just numbers.”

Rob has lived in Horsham for 34 years and has spent years working in estate agencies, he added: “I thoroughly enjoy the job and I’m truly passionate about what I do.”

Wells Independent Property Brokers was established in Au-gust, 2014. Rob said: “After recog-nizing what the client wants from their estate agent, it has always been our ambition to be able to deliver a great service, so the buck stops with me, no more excuses! So we will do whatever we can, in order to meet your expectations by giving that personal touch.

“I will go through true compari-

sons of what properties have sold recently in your area to identify the right price, so that you are not sat on the market with no viewings.

“We will recommend how to stage your property in order to get the best photos and we use the latest drone technology to take aerial shots of your property.

“We will create the floor plan at no extra cost to you so people will know your layout and spend time with you to get the best service.”

Rob told The District Post, the first property Wells sold had been on the market for some time and they were able to sell it in two weeks.

“When I first became an estate agent I wanted to change the per-ception of estate agents, and after spending many years working for corporate companies, I decided to form my own. Working for myself, I can make the decisions I need to quickly, I don’t tie people into lengthy contracts which gives my customers a lot more freedom. I’m an agent who becomes a friend.”

Wells Independent Property Broker can be found on major social media outlets and can be reached on Facebook and Twitter. Properties are advertised on their website www.wellsproperty.com and on www.rightmove.co.uk.

The agency currently covers Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire and work alongside with Wells Lettings who are based in Horsh-am. We have recommended mort-gage advisors and conveyancers. For more information visit www.wellsproperty.com or call 01403 288 093, you can also email [email protected].

for all your help with the purchase of Rectory Barn. I ap-preciate you were retained by the vendors of Rectory Barn, but the whole process was made so much easier by your per-severance and willingness to problem solve everytime the chain came up with the inevitable issues. In particular the way you kept us up to date with regular communications, was a breath of fresh air, as I’m used to having to constantly chase Agents, Solicitors and the like for information. Thanks so much for everything and I’m sure if you contin-ue with your current approach to this business you’ll have many more very satisfied customers over the next few years. We would have no hesitation in recommending you to our family and friends.”Mr and Mrs R

“Rob Wells is a highly conscientious, efficient and personable estate agent who delivers on his promises. He succeeded in obtaining an acceptable offer within two weeks of advertising our property and then actively managed a complicated pro-cess involving a chain of four transactions, which was no easy task, managing to keep us well informed at every stage.Without his constant attention to detail and excellent customer service, we are sure that we would not have got to exchange and comple-tion so soon.We can not recommend him highly enough to other sellers and rental property owners.”Mr and Mrs L , Horsham

Major problems such as damp, mould, electri-cal hazards, gas leaks and animal infestation have been experienced

by 61 per cent of tenants renting in the private sector, according to a new report released by Shelter and Brit-ish Gas.

The report largely points the finger at ill-informed, amateur and acciden-tal landlords who are far more numer-ous than rogue landlords. According to the report, more than a quarter of landlords have no previ-ous experience of letting out a property, and al-most half (43 per cent) do not regard renting as a proper business.

Carole Charge, Lead-ers’ Technical & Com-pliance Director said: “This research empha-sises how vital it is for tenants to be selective over who they rent through. Most tenants choose their agent or landlord by default, based on the property that best fits their requirements, and are not aware that landlords and agents do not all abide by the same standards.

“This is because there is still no formal regulation in place to prevent landlords and agents who have no ex-perience, qualifications, client money protection or knowledge of the law from practicing. Ironically, there are 100+ rules and regulations that a property has to pass to be let legally, yet there is no legal requirement for the people ac-tually carrying out the letting.”

In the absence of formal regulation, the only way for tenants to protect themselves is to rent through an agent that is a member of a professional, self-regulating organisation such as

ARLA, RICS or NAEA.This includes making sure that

rented property is safe and in good condition, having passed gas, elec-trical and fire safety checks, and that all relevant legislation is fully com-plied with. In addition, it means the agent will hold tenants’ deposits and all client money safely in a protected account, be trained and qualified in lettings law and abide by all rules and regulations.

“Around 35 per cent of letting agents are not members of a profes-

sional organisation and just one in 20 landlords be-

longs to an accreditation scheme, which means the public is still very vulnerable to bad prac-tice.”

Unregulated agents are able to offer lower

commission rates be-cause they do not have to

train staff or invest in the resources needed to maintain

high standards. As a result they attract landlords and tenants with low fees because most people are not aware of the risks they face.

To help tenants protect themselves, Leaders’ advice is to make sure that their chosen agent will do all the fol-lowing, as part of their standard ser-vice:• Ensure that the property has passed

an electrical safety and gas safety inspection and give the tenant a copy of the Gas Safety Record before moving in.

• Check the property is free from con-densation, mould, damp, blocked drains or sewage issues.

• Check that all soft furnishings at the property comply with fire safety regulations.

• Carry out thorough health and safe-ty checks, beyond the statutory ob-ligations, and take action to mini-mise potential hazards, for example, making sure that ponds are covered, safety glass is installed, swimming pools are fenced off, and banisters fitted and in good repair.

• Give prospective tenants a copy of the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) before viewing properties so they can make an informed decision.

• Provide Tenancy Agreements writ-ten in plain English, with no unfair terms and conditions, as determined by the Competition and Markets Au-thority (CMA).

• Hold the deposit in accordance with the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) and have Client Money Protection in place.

• Draw up a detailed Inventory & Schedule of Condition at the start of the tenancy, agreed by both tenant and landlord. This document is key to determining whether the tenant should get their full deposit back at the end of the tenancy or whether any deductions need to be made to cover loss or damage.

• Ensure that the tenant’s rights are protected during the tenancy, this includes the right to quiet enjoy-ment of the property as their own home, with at least 24 hours’ writ-ten notice given before a visit by the letting agent or landlord, except in an emergency.Established by the co-founder of

the Association of Residential Let-ting Agents in 1983 (ARLA), Leaders provides financial probity and rigor-ous standards in letting and property management. Membership of ARLA, SAFEagent and The Property Ombuds-man gives landlords and tenants com-plete peace of mind.

Sitting to the east of the Carfax in Horsham town centre, you’ll find Piries Place. Now a thriving shop-ping area, the square has a rich history which began with an in-vestment from the headmaster of Collyer’s, Mr William Pirie.

William Pirie became the head-master of Collyer’s in 1822 at only 20 years of age, he remained the headmaster there for 46 years and was often seen around Horsham town centre riding a donkey and

cart, hence the statue of Mr Pirie that sits in the square today.

William Pirie became a resident of note after he built almshouses there, which are the equivalent of low cost housing. This area of hous-ing came to be known locally as Pir-ies Place.

The site is almost unrecognizable now compared to how it was, how-ever the narrow alleyway running from the Carfax through to Piries Place has been there since the cot-

tages were built. On the site where Waitrose now

stands was the old Horsham mar-ket. The bustling market was lo-cated here for at least 100 years. Today’s markets in town follow this tradition, keeping Horsham on the map as a traditional market town.

In the late 1980s plans were drawn up to redevelop the area into a shopping centre, the market closed in 1988.

The shopping centre was finished

in 1991 and opened with Waitrose. Only three units were filled in this time and it went into receivership for a few years.

Local market guru PJ Aldred, who currently runs the Horsham Mar-kets got involved in 1991 and the then town centre manager Laurie Furneaux asked her to set up a mar-ket there. PJ said: “It was a small arts and crafts market on Thursdays and Saturdays. It became very suc-cessful and in 1993 I became cen-tre manager of Piries Place and we expanded the market and by 1995 it was full and was thriving.”

Piries Place was bought back from receivers in 1995 and in 2000 the

market moved down to the Bishop-ric.

Today the market has moved back in to Piries Place, all the retail units filled this year and business is booming, putting life back into the square.

The iconic thistle on the Piries Place signs is a nod to the Scottish heritage of WIlliam Pirie. PJ added: “I think William Pirie would be proud the site is officially named after him and he’d be thrilled the logo contains the thistle.

Many thanks to PJ Aldred who was Piries Place center manager in 1993 and currently runs Horsham Markets and Crates Local.

Saturday December 13th 2014 - South League Premier Division 2Banbury 4 - 3 Horsham Men

HockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

After setting off early, then a long wait to see if the game was on and a pitch switch to a school facility Horsham won the second half in style but were undone by conceding two goals in the opening minutes.

Banbury came out hard and fast, immediately putting Horsham under the cosh. Horsham responded well from the early setbacks but after se-ries of near misses remained two nil down at the break. With the pitch ic-

ing up Horsham had a more promis-ing start to the second half but two chances went begging before Ban-bury converted a short corner to go three up. Then Hor-sham’s Cerdic Atkinson reduced the defi cit but Banbury scored again when a miss-hit looped over the keeper’s head. But, Horsham kept going to score twice from short corners - Joe Humphreys netting on the rebound and Cerdic drag fl icking in for his sec-ond.

Team Manager Al Campbell said: “Banbury are far and away the best side we’ve played this season, yet

we were better on the day – Matt Hough hit the post in the fi rst half and we could have scored four by

half time, but the ball didn’t run for us. Unfortunately

our subsequent goal rush came too late!”

Ending their fi ve consecutive run of wins Horsham slip to fourth on 24 points, behind Banbury (29), Hen-

ley (28) and Trojans (25), but Banbury and

Trojans have played one game more. Tomorrow

(Saturday) Horsham travel for a re-scheduled game against eighth in the league Marlow, who beat Ashford 6-2 last week.

Jolyon Palmer lit up the track with aggressive performanc-es on his debut appearance in the Race of Champions (ROC) on Sunday Decem-

ber 14, just falling short of going through to the quarter-fi nals at the Bushy Park circuit in Barbados.

GP2 Champion Palmer was drawn in one of the toughest groups for the opening stage of the competi-tion, facing Indianapolis 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, DTM race-win-ner Pascal Wehrlein, and nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, who had guided Team Nordic to vic-tory in yesterday’s Nations Cup at Bushy Park.

Jolyon made a great start in the fi rst of his heats, in the ROC buggy,

to lead Hunter-Reay away from the line. As they crossed the line for the fi rst time Hunter-Reay was leading, but Jolyon put in a storming second lap to have a comfortable lead with just a couple of corners remaining. Unfortunately he just clipped the barrier at the fi nal chicane, result-ing in a time penalty which cost him his on-the-road victory.

Jolyon made another superb get-away to beat ROC veteran Kristens-en off the line in his second heat, in the Euro NASCAR. Kristensen, however, put his greater experience with the event format to good use, coming back to win the heat.

Heading into the fi nal heat, this time in the powerful Stadium Su-per Truck, Jolyon needed to win to progress to further rounds of the competition. He responded with another terrifi c start to initially

lead Wehrlein, who had prior ex-perience of the car from the previ-ous day. Jolyon attacked the open-ing lap with style, tackling many corners with just three of the bulky machine’s wheels touching the ground, before being bitten by the unpredictable truck and spinning from the lead, which allowed Wehr-lein to steal the win.

The Race of Champions concludes a spectacular season for Jolyon, in which he scored an unprecedented 276 points and won four races to become GP2 Champion. Immedi-ately after the GP2 season he had his fi rst experience of driving a For-mula One car in a test at Abu Dhabi, impressing the Sahara Force India team with his pace and technical feedback.

SwimmingDave Smith – Sports Editor

Last Saturday evening, Decem-ber 13, the Atlantis Swimming Club travelled to Brighton for the fi nal round of their Arena National League campaign. Sit-ting top of the table, having won their previous two galas, Atlantis knew that a win or run-ners up spot on the night would be good enough for them to se-cure promotion to the Premier League next season. The club have only ever achieved this once, back in 2011, when they were promoted after fi nishing that season in second place.

In the early rounds of races, it was Hastings who took a sur-prise lead after a few mistakes by Brighton left them in 4th place behind Crawley and Atlantis. The Horsham swimmers had made a steady start and knowing the fi rst events were not their strongest, were quite comfortable keeping the leaders in their sights. After the fi rst ten races Atlantis then had a dominant spell and with a string of wins from the young-sters, they took the lead. The challenge from Hastings wilted and Brighton battled back into contention, leading to a very ex-citing second half of the evening.

Atlantis kept the lead but there were always only a few points between the top three places and the coaches called for ex-treme concentration from the swimmers, especially in the re-lays, where one over eager start could result in a disqualifi cation and loss of points. The team re-sponded well and showed excel-lent technique all evening in the individual and relay races and there were no mistakes. As the events passed Atlantis managed to extend their lead and fi nished

the evening as league cham-pions, a comfortable 19 points ahead of the runners up, Craw-ley, who were 6 points ahead of 3rd placed Brighton.

To win the league is the best ever fi nish in the clubs history and for a relatively small club in comparison to its rivals, repre-sents a massive achievement by all the swimmers and coaching staff .

Next year they will be up against the biggest and best teams in the south of England which will be exciting and a fan-tastic experience for all involved in the club.

After the event, Deputy Head Coach Andy Lobley said ‘Well done to everyone, what a fantas-tic night, we produced some fan-tastic swims to gain promotion to the Premier League next sea-son. Most importantly we were undefeated all season and that is a great achievement on its own and to beat Crawley, Brighton and Hastings in the same round bodes really well for the Sussex League in the summer.”

Final South Division 1 table places (top eight) Atlantis 48 points, Crawley 46, Brighton 43, Croydon Amphibians 40, Hast-ing Seagulls A 38, Black Lion 36, Sevenoaks B 33, City of Canter-bury 30.

Saturday December 13 – London 3 South East LeagueHorsham 47 – 15 Uckfi eld

RugbyRichard Ordidge - HRUFC

Free scoring Horsham racked up another im-pressive bonus point win at home to Sussex rivals Uckfi eld last Saturday

which maintained their slender one point lead over Uckfi eld at the top of the table.

Horsham scored seven tries in their win with the fi rst coming after their customary fast start when on

5 minutes, after a dummy move in midfi eld following a scrum, John-son found Jamie Gibbs who raced through to cross the line. Johnson then added the conversion in off the post. On 23 minutes Sean Tu-hakaraina was able to turn pres-sure into points when he dummied his man to open up the defence and score under the posts for his seventh try of the season. Uckfi eld scored a good try themselves fol-lowing some good continuity, but then Horsham bounced back im-mediately when they worked a move in midfi eld to create space for James Whiting to be put through a gap to race through under the posts.

After a period of pressure and the

award of a succession of penalties Uckfi eld eventually drove over the Horsham line on the stroke of half-time to narrow the defi cit to 21-10.

Horsham maintained the pres-sure in the second half in the search for the bonus point. Following a scrum Johnson kicked for the cor-ner from where Ben Pirt fi nally crossed the line to score off the back of a driving maul.

Uckfi eld scored a good try attack-ing the blind side off a scrum before Horsham took control for the fi nal twenty minutes adding a further three tries.

Iain Fisher crashed over the line after great phase play involving forwards and backs, Tuhakaraina

threw a wide pass to Gibbs to race away to score which was converted from the touch line by Johnson and Gibbs then completed his hat-trick with a training ground miss move in the centre of the pitch crossing the line untouched, which Johnson again converted with the help of the uprights.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker said “We had to wear down a good op-position. Their pick and go was ef-fective and they were an aggressive side in the contact area. They were good at spoiling, had a strong scrum and never gave up.

This was a good victory for the squad and the fringe players had to step up and fi t into our patterns.

I thought Iain Fisher had a great game. He won 100% of his line out ball, cleared up a lot of loose ball on the fl oor and capped it by scoring a fi ne try. Michael Tredgett gives us go forward ball whilst at the same time slowing down their ball and made a number of big hits. Paul Talbot played well despite being only half fi t and Jamie Gibbs scored a good hat-trick. This now sets us up well for the local derby against Pulborough next week.”

Horsham Team: W Bell, Gibbs, Tuhakaraina, Ordidge, Whiting; Johnson, Rush (Mills 60); Talbot, Fisher, Barber; Green, Goward (Smith 40); Pirt, N Bell (Stone 54), Tredgett.

Saturday December 13 –London 3 South East LeaguePulborough 7 – 31 Dartfordians

The visit of Dartfordians was al-ways likely to be a stiff exami-nation for Pulborough – and so it proved, the Kent side winning comfortably enough. Yet, not quite at full strength Borough had plenty of possession and signifi cant pas-sages of control, suggesting that the result might have been diff er-ent had they taken their chances.

Dartfordians, the only team to beat leaders Horsham, have now won 10 of their 11 games and attacked strongly from the start, quickly posting a converted try. Borough

then uncharacteristically missed a seemingly straightforward penalty, before the visitors scored an uncon-verted try to lead by 12 points at the interval. On the restart Dartfordians notched up a further try which was kicked over, but Ollie Burnett soon cut through their defence, running 30 yards to cross the line, Frazer Oliphant-Hope converting. Borough fi nished strongly but were unable to increase their seven point tally after further Dartfordian successes took their total to 31.

Borough captain Seth Wise said: “Dartfordians are a good side, wor-thy of their second spot and are a bit fi tter than us. Games like this are critical for our development and we really stepped up, making them work for their win.”

Tomorrow (Saturday), Borough, still eighth in the table, have anoth-er tough fi xture - against high fl y-ing leaders Horsham, who thrashed Uckfi eld last week.

Horsham Boxing Club fi nished a successful 2014 with a hard fought win for light welterweight Steve Arnold.

Arnold travelled to Hayes in Mid-dlesex to compete against home boxer Ryan Walsh in a bout taken at the last minute due to Walsh’s’ planned opponent getting injured a few days before the show.

In his 13th contest Arnold, start-ed fast and hurt his stocky oppo-nent with a body shot early in the fi rst round which both winded and slowed Walsh down in front of a

partisan home crowd. If the home boxer hoped that his Horsham based foe would tire, he was to be disappointed as Arnold continued to throw lots of punches and kept busy throughout the fi ght to end up a worthy unanimous points victor.

Horsham Boxing Club goes into the festive break on the back of a great home show and is looking for new members to join in the New Year.

Tuesday December 16 - Sussex County League Div 1Horsham YMCA 3 – 3 Hassocks

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

An 87th minute Hassocks equal-iser halted Horsham YMCA from bouncing back to winning ways, as they drew 3-3 on Tuesday evening.

YM were reduced to ten men after midfielder Dave Brown was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Robins’ forward Mark Price just ten minutes in, before the visitors made things worse for Peter Buckland’s side when Tom Davees opened the scoring two minutes later.

The hosts recovered as Anthony Hibbert headed home right on the stroke of half time, and then con-tinued to battle hard with a man

less after the break.Top goalscorer Nick Sullivan

made it 2-1 midway through the second period, only for the Rob-ins to draw level thanks to Ashley Marsh shortly after.

YM hit back and retook the lead four minutes later, as striker Sul-livan this time turned provider for brother Dan to tap home at the far post, but a late visitors’ goal from Phil Johnson earned his side a share of the spoils three minutes from time.

YM manager Buckland com-mented: “I feel like I’ve lost a game of football. As soon as Browny was sent off, if someone had said would you take 3-3 now, it would have been tempting to say yes. But having said that, the players put in such a good shift with ten men, and particularly after going 3-2 up and then conced-ing so close to stoppage time, I felt

we could have won. I know it’s easy for a manager to stand here after a game and blame the referee, but on this occasion I feel fully vindicated. He has had an absolute nightmare and he gave us absolutely nothing.

“If we can be on our game and get three points on Saturday that will put us on thirty four points, which I think is exactly what we were on at the halfway stage last season. The run in will be strong for us again and we only missed out by a point last season, so all is not dead.”

Goal scorers: YM - Hibbert 45+1, N. Sullivan 60, D. Sullivan 72 Has-socks - Davees 12, Marsh 68, John-son 87.

YM: Fox, Gathern (Carden 55), Dugdale (c), O’Carroll, Evans, Gedling, Hibbert, D. Brown, J. Brown (Hunter 76), D. Sullivan, N. Sullivan. Unused Subs: Flack, Gan-non.

Henfield Utd U11 0 - 4 Ches-worth Rovers U11

Tom was the hat-trick hero last Saturday as Chesworth Rovers U11 hit the road looking for a win going into the Christmas period. Saturdays match was played in Brighton against a strong Hen-field side also wanting to gain a win. The Chesworth passing game came to the fore and Tom had the game of his season. The first half saw Tom net 2 stun-ning goals, and after the break he bagged his hat-trick. Nyle finished the scoring to secure 3 points and a great team 0 - 4 win. The second match finished 0 - 7 to Chesworth and saw Josh bag his own hat-trick, Callum, Lewis Jake and Leo joined the score sheet to finish with another win.

Horsham Sparrows FC Under 10 – The team built

on last week’s success with a fine 3-1 win against Lingfield.

The second game saw Lingfield bounce back with a victory.

Under 13 – In another fixture at Lingfield, there was a great team performance from Spar-rows U13s, who took a first half 3 - 0 lead. In the second half Lingfield came back strongly and eventually took the lead 5 - 4 but Sparrows where not finished and a great move was finished off by Man of the Match Jacob P to make the final score 5 - 5 and round off a great personal per-formance. The goal scorers were Zak - 2, Mark - 1 and Jacob P - 2.

Under 18 Girls – In a game that was moved at the last minute the team travelled to high flying Kingston where an exciting game finished 5-2. The whole team put in a fantastic performance and despite heroic goalkeeping from Hope and a goal each from Sien-na and Naomi, the team couldn’t hold on against very strong op-position.

Some of the Sparrows teams still have availability for player. Visit www.horshamsparrows.co.uk for more details about joining the club.

Junior Football Round Up

Saturday December 13 - Sus-sex County League Div 1Broadbridge Heath 1 - 2 Ne-whaven

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

A very eventful opening 15 min-utes saw Heath take the lead only for Newhaven to contro-versially equalise.

Jamal Sultan broke away down the right and pulled the ball back for Merv Bhujun whose shot was saved well by the keeper only Ol-lie Moore to collect the loose ball and bury his shot into the bot-tom right corner.

Four minutes later the visi-tors were level when Lee Rob-inson and Heath’s Mark Bevan both challenged for the ball in the penalty area, Robinson got up quickly to chase after the ball but the Assistant Referee had spotted an infringement and af-ter consultation with the referee a penalty was awarded; Ryan Walton stepped up to the spot to convert for his 10th league goal of the season.

The game’s most important incident came after 20 minutes when Newhaven’s Robinson clattered into Heath centre-back Martyn Flack who was upset with the challenge and responded by pushing the Newhaven player in the chest. The referee showed Robinson a yellow card for the challenge but then stunned

Heath by producing a red card for Flack for the push, leaving the home side to battle on for 70 minutes.

Heath, despite their numeri-cal disadvantage, continued to press in the second half and Andrade was unfortunate not to have scored with a spectacu-lar overhead effort that hit the post. However two minutes later a long ball was played forward to Walton who setup Ebou Jjallow whose precise header gave Ne-whaven a second goal from close range.

Heath were to suffer anoth-er blow when Sultan looked as though he was fouled as he en-tered the penalty area but amaz-ingly nothing was given by the referee. Sultan was clearly upset at not being awarded a penalty and continued his protest at the assistant referee who didn’t take his comments too kindly and af-ter consultation with the referee Sultan became the second Heath player to be shown a red card.

The game ended with nine man Heath still trying to press forward however the visitors saw the game out to take the three points from a disappointing match that was spoilt by a heavy pitch and some controversial refereeing decisions.

Heath Team: Fisher, Wicking, Bevan, Carruthers, Flack, Wad-dingham, Moore, Godfrey, An-drade (Grieg 76), Bhujun (McNab 65), Sultan.

Decisions go against Heath as two get red cards

It’s not often that Horsham pro-duces a World Champion or a BBC Sports Personality award winner but women’s rugby star Becky Essex can lay claim to both af-ter receiving the ‘Team of the Year’ award at last weekend’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year show hosted by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan.

Becky was a major part of the England rugby team that won the Women’s Rugby World Cup in France this summer. The team se-cured the title of World Champions with a 21-9 victory against Canada in the fi nal at the Stade Jean Bouin in Paris.

Becky started playing rugby at Loughborough University where she studied psychology. She quickly built a reputation as a fi rst class player, earning her fi rst England cap in 2008.

Becky grew up in Horsham and attended Chesworth Junior School before going onto Millais and then to Collyers. Becky now lives in Lon-don and works as a teacher at Lin-

den Bridge School in Worcester Park where she teaches children with autism. Becky’s parents still live in Horsham and her brother Nick plays for Horsham Rugby Club.

After receiving the BBC award Becky said “I am so honoured and proud to have won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Team of the Year award with such an amazing group of friends. What a way to end this special year.”

Saturday December 13 - Ryman League Division One SouthHorsham 1 - 0 Sittingbourne

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

The infl uential and essential pair of Gareth Williams and Tony Nwa-chukwu were both key in the Hor-nets fi rst league win since Sep-tember, Williams superbly saving a penalty while Nwachukwu scored coolly from the spot in what was his 200th Club appearance.

The other big factor in this much improved Hornets showing was the performances of Anthony Storey and Ryan Woodford. Both play-ers returned to the club during the week and both slotted straight into the team adding experience, ability and attitude that boosted the lack-lustre eff orts of recent weeks giving renewed hope that with some con-sistency and a few other additions to the squad the team can keep its Ryman League status.

Gary Charman, probably attempt-ing a comeback too early, limped off after a few minutes to be replaced by Jamie Ampleford which added to the set back prior to kick off when Byron Napper withdrew unwell.

All the early play came from the Hornets with Storey in midfi eld pulling the strings and Nwachukwu hitting the bar with a volley while at the other end Williams pulled off a good low save to keep the scores even. The visitors were given an opportunity to take the lead when

Hicham Akhazzan was tripped by Billy-Joe King in the area for a clear penalty after the Sittingbourne for-ward had skipped past two defen-sive tackles. King escaped a booking but limped off injured after coming off worse from his foul.

From the spot kick Horsham keeper Williams again showed his worth by diving full stretch to palm Nwoko’s spot kick past the post.

The Hornets stayed on the front foot and again came close with chances created by the impressive and vocal Storey that Morley and Ampleford could not convert.

Horsham continued to pressurise their visitors in the second period Smith, Woodford and Storey all hav-ing decent eff orts although Sitting-bourne posed a threat on the break.

Then on 77 minutes the Hornets got the breakthrough that their play probably deserved.

Smith and Miller broke from their own half and put Nwachukwu in

the clear but visiting keeper Mol-loy blocked Nwachukwu’s eff ort, however the loose ball fell to Smith who was tripped by Okoh for the second clear penalty of the match. The reliable Nwachukwu stepped up and hammered the ball past Molloy and Horsham’s fi rst league win for months was in the bag.

If the tide is to turn for the Hor-nets this much improved perfor-mance must be built upon and a good consistent run of results needs to be achieved, tomorrows (Satur-day December 20) vital home match against mid table Walton & Hersh-am being step two in the climb out of the mire.

Saturday December 13 - Sussex County League Div 1Pagham 3 – 2 Horsham YMCA

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Horsham YMCA were made to re-gret a ‘catastrophic fi rst fi ve min-utes’ and a plethora of squandered second half opportunities, as they were beaten 3-2 away at Pagham in Division 1 action last Saturday.

A shambolic YM start gifted the Lions a 2-0 lead after just fi ve min-utes, before the hosts added a third shortly after the half hour mark. Anthony Hibbert reduced the defi cit three minutes before half time, and his goal proved vital in providing Peter Buckland’s side with the im-petus to battle back after the break.

Pagham rarely managed to escape out of their own half during a second forty fi ve dominated by the visitors. A barrage of gilt-edged chances were wasted either side of a Nick Sullivan second, before YM’s frus-trating afternoon was compounded when manager Buckland was sent to the stands and midfi elder Liam Hunter shown a second booking in added time.

The YM boss commented: “It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, if you give a team a 3-0 head start, you are going to be up against it, and we had a catastrophic fi rst fi ve minutes.

“I switched it to 4-4-2 and said just go for it and that’s what they did. I’m not exaggerating when I say we should have won 7-3. We missed chance after chance after chance.

“There was also a blatant hand-ball [in the penalty area]. The lines-men and the referee are so busy on stuff that doesn’t matter, but stuff like that is crucial. They did not get out of their half in the second half. We should have come away from here with at the very worst a point.

“But we’re not even half way through the season yet. We’ve got another two games before we reach half way, so hopefully we can put six points on the board and then you watch us go in second half of the season.”

Goalscorers: Pagham - Morey 3, Murfi n 5, O’Connor 33 YM - Hibbert 42, N. Sullivan 69

YM Team: Fox, Carden, O’Carroll, Crane (Gedling 32), Evans, Dugdale, Hibbert, D. Brown, Hunter, D. Sul-livan (J. Brown 70), N. Sullivan. Un-used Subs: Gannon, Curtis, Gathern.
