Samantha Cameron opens new centre

Disabled children and their par-ents met someone who shared their experiences when Samantha Cameron opened a new centre to help them in Horsham.

The wife of Prime Minister David Cameron launched the Hop Skip and Jump Foundation for disabled children as part of the charity’s “Care In the High Street” initiative.

Mrs Cameron, 44, has fi rst-hand knowledge of caring for a severely disabled child, having lost her son Ivan at only six in 2009 to the rare Ohtahara Symdrome that caused him severe epilepsy and cerebral palsy throughout his life. At the time she spoke of how looking after a disabled child “pushes you to the limits of what you can cope with, physically and emotionally.”

In an upbeat private visit on Tues-day Mrs Cameron, who has three other children, Nancy 11, Arthur 9 and Florence, four, chatted to fami-lies. She also saw how special soft play and sensory areas, together with other facilities, helped young-sters who live with a wide range of

often complex disabilities. She also talked to charity workers and peo-ple from Horsham District Council and the town centre management who helped set up the new centre.

Mrs Cameron, a long term sup-porter of Hop, Skip and Jump, said:“This very special centre, the second of its kind in the country, off ers children with special needs and their families, a safe haven in the heart of the town.

“I have personal experience of the horrible struggle of attempting to do the weekly shop while caring for a disabled child and of trying to change nappies on the fl oor of a public toilet while out and about.

“ I would have loved to have found such a supportive centre, where my child could be cared for while I car-ried out the everyday chores that other families take for granted.

“ I passionately support Hop, Skip and Jump’s commitment to help families cope with the challenges a disabled child brings, and fully back their amazing vision to off er ‘Care in the High Street’ facilities to families right across the country. I applaud the owners of Swan Walk Shopping Centre and Horsham Dis-trict Council for their support of the charity and hope that similar part-nerships can take place elsewhere.”

With this weekend’s Loxwood Joust looming a knight warmed up with a visit to a school.

The joust runs this Saturday and Sunday and again next weekend at Loxwood Meadow.

Before preparing for combat Sir Stephen of Loxwood paid a visit to Billingshurst Primary School to show their students what life on the battle fi eld in mediaeval times was really like.

Armed with authentic mediae-val weapons, Sir Stephen , whose real name is name Stephen Payne, demonstrated what it was like to be a Knight and the gruesome roles children had on the battlefi eld.

Billingshurst Primary School’s Year 5’s were captivated by the

demonstrations and display of me-dieval weaponry. Learning what war hammers, fl ange maces, mercy daggers and pole hammers were used for, along with the benefi ts of each weapon, they saw and really felt what life was like in what was a brutal age.

Learning that they were older than the medieval children who started training at seven and eight years old, that the arrow was the most eff ective medieval weapon, with more than 4.5 million being fi red at the Battle of Agincourt in 20 minutes, enough to block out the sun and turn day into night, were just some of the facts they were surprised to hear.

With details on how the ‘hand

bag’ came about – and the origins of common sayings such as ‘rais-ing the stakes’ and ‘keep it under your hat’ all originating from the medieval battle fi elds, history was brought to life for the pupils and shown how it has impacted our modern day life.

Stephen said: “I had a great time with this well-mannered, well

behaved and curious group of children. They asked some really interesting questions and were very keen to participate and contribute in any way they could.”

The Loxwood Joust runs from 10am to 6pm and is located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood and has free parking.

Hard day’s knight for pupils before weekend’s Loxwood Joust

Good news for home huntersFifty more houses a year is the de-mand from a planning inspector to Horsham District Council.

The Post reported last week that the council was disappointed that it had been asked to allocate space for an increased fi gure of 800 homes across the district until the year 2031.

The previous fi gure on the Hor-sham District Planning Frame-work was 750 for the next 16 years, meaning land for another 50 homes each year must be found.

The council said it did not have to fi nd or consult on the extra homes now, but it would have to review the plan within three years of adopting it and fi nd the extra sites.

The extra housing is required be-cause neighbouring Crawley cannot meet its requirements.

PC who faced Samurai sword attack honoured

A constable who protected a col-league from a man carrying two Samurai swords is among people given policing awards.

Offi cers, staff , special constables, volunteers and members of the community from West Sussex have been recognised for outstanding contributions over the past year.

Award winners from Horsham and other parts of the county at-tended a ceremony at Arundel Cas-tle.

In one incident, while attending to a domestic situation, Sergeant Ben Websdale and PC Michael But-ler were confronted by a young man with two Samurai swords.

The man charged at the offi cers, forcing them both to move back.

PC Butler tripped on the uneven path and Sergeant Websdale put himself in harm’s way to protect his colleague.

No- one was seriously injured and when more offi cers arrived the sus-pect was arrested and charged.

Speaking about the incident, which happened in Crawley, Ser-geant Websdale said: “It was pretty much only afterwards, I’d say prob-

ably the next day, you start think-ing about how close you were to actually losing your life because you don’t stand a chance with a Samurai sword, particularly two of them.”

“It is nice to be recognised with a Divisional Commendation because police do a lot of hard work, and that was a very violent situation. I’m just glad no one got hurt.”

PC Luke Farley was awarded a Divisional Commendation for ar-resting two men after a fi ght in Haywards Heath. He was attacked before calling for help from col-leagues, and was assisted by an on-duty passing paramedic.

High Sheriff of West Sussex Den-ise Patterson and Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry made the presentations and there were 104 awards in all.

Superintendent Steve Whitton ,West Sussex Divisional Command-er, said: “In my 29 years as a police offi cer I never cease to be amazed by the examples I see day in and day out of offi cers and staff going above and beyond in order to keep people safe, often putting themselves in harm’s way.”

Red cards and fl ogged horses in Gatwick Gatwick protestors took to sports analogies to insist airport bosses should give up the fi ght for a sec-ond runway.

Commenting on Gatwick Air-port’s response to the Airports Commission decision on July 1 to recommend Heathrow for anoth-er runway instead, Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign chairman Brendon Sewill said: ‘Gatwick was given a red card and they should stop arguing with the referee.”

Gatwick insists the wording of the report still gives it hope for expan-sion in the future, and a fi nal deci-sion has yet to be made on where the extra runway will be provided, although the commission’s recom-mendation for a third runway at Heathrow was unanimous.

After listing points that he claimed were fl aws in the Gatwick case Mr Sewill said: : “It is time for Gatwick to give up fl ogging their dead runway horse and concentrate instead on being a better neigh-bour”

The campaign group claims some fl aws in the Gatwick case are imme-diately apparent.

Among points made in a state-ment were : “They cannot deny that a new runway at Gatwick would provide less economic benefi t for the nation than one at Heathrow.

“They draw attention to the growth in short haul fl ights to Eu-rope. Many of these are bucket-and-spade holidays which have al-ways been Gatwick’s main forte but which these days many people fi nd more convenient from other air-ports closer to their homes.

“It is rubbish for Gatwick to talk about a ‘monopoly’ at Heathrow when Heathrow will always face tough competition from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and many Europe-an airports.

“On noise, Gatwick imply that the noise problem at Gatwick would not be serious. That will infuriate the thousands of people who are at present suff ering from new fl ight paths introduced by Gatwick in the past two years.”

Top award goes to county’s nursing trio

Three nurses working for a trust that covers West Sussex have won a top award.

The trio of Sussex Community NHS Trust staff has been given the prestigious title of Queen’s Nurse by the community nursing charity The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

They were all recommended for the accolade because of their long standing work in their specialist ar-eas of nursing.

Penny Gough, senior nurse as-sessor, demonstrated a commit-ment to high standards of patient centred care and the development of community nursing through in-novative practice.

Gill Walford, tissue viability nurse specialist, has demonstrated a commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and leader-ship.

Anne-Marie Hartley, quality and

patient safety improvement nurse, has demonstrated a commitment to patient safety and a passion to im-prove the patient experience.

The Queen’s Nurse title indicates a commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and lead-ership. Nurses who hold the title benefi t from developmental work-shops, bursaries, networking op-portunities, and a shared profes-sional identity.

Staff on the Trust are the main providers of NHS community health services across West Sussex and Brighton and Hove. They provide a wide range of medical, nursing and therapeutic care to more than 8,000 people a day. They work to help people plan, manage and adapt to changes in their health, to prevent avoidable admission to hospital and to minimise hospital stay.

Youngsters give charities a helping hand

Local charities will benefi t from the physical eff orts of youngsters.

More than 1,000 students from Tanbridge House School completed an 8-mile sponsored walk last week in a bid to raise a huge amount for local charities.

The bi-annual sponsored walk sees the whole school embark on

an extensive walk around Horsham and Slinfold.

All students were asked to col-lecting sponsorship for taking part.

Nearly every student at the school took part and completed the walk, which took about four hours.

The money raised this year will be split between a number of local

charities, including the Snowdrop Trust.

The school is aiming to eventually raise an ambitious £15,000.

If you would like to sponsor Tan-bridge House School, please visit www.justgiving.com/tanbridge-house-school.

Summertime, and the recycling is easy...

Top tips for the summer party season:• Place a container next to the barbeque for people to pop their empty drinks cans, bottles

and plastic burger trays in. Make sure drinks cans and bottles are totally empty and no leftover food is put in.

• Just tip all your recycling straight into your blue-top bin from the container.• Consider using washable plates and cutlery rather than plastic knives, forks and paper plates.• You can’t recycle plastic knives and forks but you can re-use them. • Ensure that everything is clean, dry and loose in your blue-top bin, if food waste or liquid

gets in your bin it can ruin the rest of your recycling.

Summertime is approaching and that means lots of picnics and barbeques. Horsham District Council is asking residents not to forget to recycle all those extra bottles, cans and plastic food trays.

To learn more about your recycling service, visit horsham.gov.uk/bins/recycling, email: [email protected] or telephone 01403 733144

Just Elephantastic as charity trails launched

Children are on safari in Horsham after the colourful launch of the charity Elephantastic trails.

Crowds in the town centre ad-mired the beautifully- decorated model creations under shelter as

two elephant trails in the town cen-tre and one beyond it were unveiled on Sunday.

Many people bought maps at £1 each to begin tracking down the strategically placed elephants in the

next few weeks and one lucky fam-ily from the hundreds entered in a draw will win a trip to Nairobi.

After months of anticipation thousands of people at last got the chance to see the models unveiled,

revealing a wide variety array of de-signs from the subtle to the bold.

Elephant-related entertainments were also laid on.

Although the persistent rain made the town resemble an el-

ephant -watering hole at times, it did not dim the enthusiasm of youngsters and parents seeing the models for the first time.

A mini trail in neighbouring Bill-ingshurst will also be available as well as those in Horsham until Au-gust 31.

The venture did not end with Sunday’s impressive launch.

Owners of the elephants, mostly local firms, will see them auctioned off in August. Proceeds of the El-ephantastic scheme will go to the Born Free Foundation, based in Horsham, to help preserve wildlife species and also to local charities. Each elephant has a link to a local charity, and the event also served to highlight their work.

Actor Brian Blessed, a supporter of the charity, was unable to be present at the launch because of ill-ness, and Will Travers spoke of the work of the Born Free charity and Elephantastic. Entertainer Dave Benson Phillips was also at the launch.

Horsham Rotary Club created the charity fundraising project, with help from local traders’ organisa-tion Horsham Unlimited, the dis-trict council and Billingshurst-based marketing agency PMW Communications. The Rotary Club said it was delighted with the suc-cess of the launch and the support from the crowd in the rain.

Local businesses backed the scheme strongly, with 128 ele-phant- owning companies partici-pating and 64 local charities along-side Born Free Foundation set to benefit from the proceeds.

Among the charity support Wabi in East Street, Horsham, is backing Action Medical Research with a dis-tinctive elephant designed by local artists Jean Holder and Edith Barton and signed by YouTube superstars Marcus Butler and Niomi Smart.

Alice in Wonderland at Horsham Museum

On 15 September 1879 a young cou-ple named Reginald and Alice Har-greaves arrived at Sedgwick Park in Horsham to begin their honey-moon. They were “foolishly happy creatures,” having been married at 3pm at Westminster Abbey.

Such an occasion would rarely interest people today, but this year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of the world’s favourite children’s book, Alice in Wonder-land, and it was the original Alice who honeymooned in Horsham that inspired the book.

Celebrating both events, Horsh-

am Museum and Art Gallery is hold-ing a major exhibition of Alice in Wonderland memorabilia, collected by Horsham resident Victor Wiff en, who has one of this country’s larg-est collections. The exhibition is being supported by Toovey’s.

The free exhibition, ‘Wonderland: 150 years of Alice’s Adventures,’ runs to 29 August.

Not only does the exhibition celebrate Alice, it also showcases the passion of a collector who pur-sued an aff ordable hobby. As Victor notes: “The collection started with second hand copies of the Alice books bought for a few pence from charity stores and when it became apparent the huge variety of il-lustrators that were available with several editions being published every year, the collection seemed

to enlarge with friends and fam-ily looking out for new copies to add. The collection extended to in-clude translations of the books. It is known that it has been translated into at least 125 languages.

“The back end of the garage was converted into a library and display area to accommodate the growing collection. It now includes china, porcelain, tin, painted pewter and pottery fi gures, Royal Doulton Toby jugs, tea pots from 1960s and Co-penhagen porcelain, 1970’s Royal Worcester fi gures that were proto-typed but never went into produc-tion.”

Alice had 48 years of happy mar-riage, and once, in 1931, she visited the Museum when it was at Park House, Horsham. Pictured are im-ages from the exhibition.

BREAKING NEWSCLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS

Surgeon heads for world’s zaniest marathonA top surgeon is swapping the op-erating theatre for a saddle in the world’s zaniest marathon to help buy equipment.

Paul Carter, chief of surgery for Western Sussex Hospitals Founda-tion Trust and consultant urological Surgeon , is usually known for his cool demeanour and professional disposition.

But he is throwing caution to the wind later this year to take part in the 26-mile Medoc Marathon. This is part of a fundraising scheme supported by West Sussex Urology LLP to raise money towards fund-ing new equipment for diagnosing prostate cancer.

The event on September 12 is known as the world’s zaniest mar-athon. It involves running from vineyard to vineyard in the Bor-deaux region of France and the

spectacle features an outlandishly costumed fi eld.

All the money donated will be used to help buy prostate template biopsy equipment which will im-prove the speed and accuracy of diagnosing prostate cancer. It will also bene-fi t some men who have prostate cancer but are being monitored, by giving them the reas-surance that monitor-ing their condition is the correct pathway of care.

The equipment costs al-most £60,000 and enables urologists to investigate the whole prostate gland giving a much more ac-curate diagno-sis.

Mr Carter said: “Prostate can-cer diagnosis and monitoring has evolved over the last few years. The prostate template biopsy equip-ment will have a huge impact on the

lives of the men we see in clin-ic. The whole process will be much quicker and better for the patient. Everyone do-nating to ‘Ten Pounds for Templates’ will be making a real diff erence to men’s health and we’re hoping that we can raise enough money to be able to provide

the diagnostic procedure at St Richard’s Hospi-

tal in Chichester, rather than pa-

tients having to travel outside the area.”

Community spirit brings life savers to village

People in Nuthurst Parish are a community of potential lifesavers after having their fourth defi bril-lator for the public installed.

Three years ago a small group of residents formed ‘HEARTBEAT’ with a mission to place defi brilla-tors at strategic locations around the parish for easy, 24-hour access by everyone. The latest one adds to those provided at Mannings Heath, Nuthurst and Maplehurst.

HEARTBEAT successfully applied to the British Heart Foundation for a Nation of Lifesavers Community Package which included part-fund-ing of a defi brillator and the Call Push Rescue training kit.

Meanwhile, the Copsale Hall committee members organised raf-fl es to raise funds and promoted awareness of the potentially life-saving machine. Together with the generosity of Copsale residents, they raised more than a thousand pounds.

Chris Beer, Heartbeat chairman, said: “We are delighted with the support we have received from BHF and the Copsale community ena-bling us to commission the Copsale unit earlier than planned. Should a person suff er a sudden cardiac ar-

rest locally, or on the Downs Link near Copsale, they will now have a better chance of survival.

We wish to thank residents, lo-cal businesses, local societies, our Parish Council and, of course, BHF for their support which has greatly assisted us in achieving our fi nal target.

The BHF Call Push Rescue train-ing kits include everything needed to learn CPR in half an hour and are free to eligible schools and commu-nity groups. HEARTBEAT currently runs the training sessions, together with Defi brillator Awareness ses-sions, for Nuthurst Parish residents (contact 01403 732206 for details). New coffee shop concept serving up bribery cards, coffee cocktails and freshly roasted coffee arrives in HorshamA new and exciting coffee shop concept arrives in Horsham this weekend. Mangobean, a new national coffee shop chain, aims to bring fun and enjoyment back to the high street with a range of unique products and services. Mangobean Horsham the 5th store will be opening on Bishopric on 1st August with a range of special introductory offers. The concept was conceived by Shane Saunders, Mangobean’s Head Honcho.

“We’ve spent the last 10 years developing our own branded products, helping others to develop their coffee shops and we’ve witnessed first-hand how the major high street coffee shop chains have become homogeneous, offering the same products in the same environment”, commented Shane. Mangobean has supplied over 6 million cups of coffee and installed over 250 coffee machines and many other types of catering equipment in businesses throughout the UK. Moving into coffee shops was next logical step for the company.

“We want to offer something different to what was already out there. Our coffee shops offer a fun environment where everyone can enjoy coffee that’s been freshly roasted. Our range of coffee cocktails (non-alcoholic!) include combinations such as an americano with strong, sweet raspberry favours (The Tracey Jane) and delicious gingerbread flavoured coffees (The Ginger Ninja).”

In addition to coffee, Mangobean will serve freshly made Belgium waffles on a stick. A range of specialty frappes, smoothies, frozen yoghurt and ice cream as well as con-venient ‘grab and go’ products, our sandwiches are made

locally and delivered to us daily.

“We offer bribery cards instead of loyalty cards. We don’t preach to people about the complexity of the bean. If you want sugar with your coffee, you can have sugar with your coffee! We offer all public sector heroes 10% discount of all hot drinks all year round to say thank you. If you’re a traffic warden, you pay full price for everything!”

Mangobean has other coffee shop opening this month in Birmingham, then Bolton with a further 6 stores in the pipe-line The company plans to open 80 stores across the UK in the next 5 years, with discussions to sell the master franchise to India, USA and Saudi Arabia.

“It’s an exciting time for us and we’re looking for joint venture partners to join us in 2015. It has been a journey of many twists, turns and obstacles and we’re delighted to have Horsham as a Mangobean location it’s a fantastic town and we can’t wait to see how successful the store is going to be over the coming months and years”

Mangobean Coffee operates a joint venture partnership model with opportunities available nationwide.

The official launch of Mangobean Horsham, located at Bishopric, will be on 1st August at 11.00am with a series of special offers to celebrate becoming part of the local com-munity.

More information is available on the Mangobean website: www.mangobean.co.uk or Twitter: @mangobeancoffee

Saxon Lammas Day is upon us

This may be one of the oddest things that you read all gardening year, so if you have a delicate hor-ticultural disposition go and dead head your tea roses until you are given the all clear and the page has been turned.

It might surprise you to know that this time of year is one of the most important times in the pagan hor-ticultural and agricultural calendar. August 1st is the great Saxon Lam-mas Day, which symbolizes the fi rst sacrifi ce and off ering to God from the new harvest. The fi rst loaf of bread made from the new corn was always given over to the church. But there are darker mysteries surrounding Lammas which some believe predate Christianity. It is thought that at this time of year a human sacrifi ce was performed in farms up and down the country to restore the Spirit of Spring who was supposedly cut down in the last sheaf of corn. But sleep easy to-night, the word Weald means wood-land in Saxon, so Horsham have no doubt, was stock country and not

the arable fi elds of blood you imag-ine. Your garden is not haunted by the sacrifi ced youth of yesteryear. (Have you checked under the patio?) That would be more likely on the fl at planes next to Chichester where the silt was ideal for growing crops. It is also a time that at one time the land would have been fi lled with ‘Cry-ing the Neck’ songs and the making of the corn dollies, all celebrations marking the successful harvest and the coming bounty of Autumn (which would have started around this time also). However, if you are not up for sacrifi cing one of your children to the great Spring Spirit (I am sure some of you parents are possibly mooting the idea already), there is lots to do in the veg gar-den or allotment. For a start, after clearing your beds of fi nished crops, sow your potatoes in large pots now for mid-winter crop. As long as they are kept frost free, you should get a nice supply of new potatoes for Christmas. Also think of the veg you want for Spring crop. Things like Winterjewel cabbage and shal-lots would be good early croppers. Have you ever thought of growing turnip tops? High in Vitamin C and Iron, they are ideal for the ‘hungry gap’ when not much else grows.

SUSSEX FOLKLORE: The Good Ship Nicholas

In my previous article I spoke about ghost-lore from the coast-lines of Sussex. I’d like to con-tinue such sea-related yarns; and this time speak of a ghostly boat or two.

On the Sussex coast the ghost of the Good Ship Nicholas is said to be seen, although it has not been reported since the Sec-ond World War. During the 12th century the ves-sel was returning from a trip to Constantinople, the boat was occupied by pil-grims who’d been to visit the holy places of Jerusa-lem, but upon reaching the English Channel a strong wind began to blow and the boat was wrecked off Brighton. Witnesses to the phantom ship seem few and far between, as are witnesses of the ghostly tramp steamer (the name given to a steam ship that does not operate on a fi xed schedule) also said to haunt the waters off Bright-on. On 17th May of 1916 a group of people strolling along the prom-enade were astonished to see the tramp steamer so close to shore but when it vanished into thin air, the watchers were even more startled.

It is worth noting that a phantom ship was seen to wreck in 1960 off East Sussex. A woman named Rita Newman had been working at a fac-tory in Portslade and she was just fi nishing her tea break when she l o o k e d out of

a large win-dow in time to see a great ship, re-sembling a coal boat, leave the har-bour and head off towards Brighton. Rita then returned to work but for some unknown reason felt an urge to look out the window again and was astonished that in just a hand-ful of seconds this boat seemed to have travelled a great distance.

The oddest thing however was, despite its speed, the vessel then suddenly stopped dead and then very slowly tipped forward so that the stern was pointing skywards as smoke began to billow from it. The ship was clearly in some distress but before Rita could even react the boat disappeared beneath the

waves. Rita was unable to stay at the window as she had to get

back to work and no-one else in the factory had seen the

ship sink. However, that night Rita told her father about what she’d seen. It seems he had seen the same thing. Rita’s father worked at the nearby power station and where has was po-sitioned there’d been a clear, uninterrupted view of the sea stretching

from Worthing to Bright-on. He told Rita he’d seen

a ship come extremely close to shore and that surely it was

about to run aground, and so he moved to get an even better look but there was no sign of the vessel.

Some suggestions put forward to explain the incident were that it was a mirage but as Rita concluded, “If it was a mirage, how could the size of the masts have taken up the whole view of the window where my father was working ?”

Had this been the ghost ship re-ported off Brighton pre-World War Two or does the Sussex coastline

New look Horsham Pizza Express pays tribute to local born romantic poet ShelleyPizzaExpress is celebrating the launch of its exciting new look restaurant in Horsham. Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and fea-tures artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham.

Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed – often us-ing well known places, people or historical events from the area, as the basis. The interior of the Hor-sham restaurant has a range of col-lage artworks, inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. The artworks combine pieces of text and imagery that give a contemporary interpre-tation of his work.

Manager, Ugo Pendezza, said: “We have a friendly and enthusias-tic team who are looking forward to welcoming everyone to our beauti-ful restaurant over a delicious piz-za.”

PizzaExpress has been dishing up fresh, handmade pizza at the Hor-sham restaurant since 1997. Built during the reign of James I, this beautiful Grade II listed building has original wooden beams. There is also a charming patio garden to enjoy the exciting summer menu, which has plenty of new options, including even more low-calorie mains and desserts, a new range of premium pizzas, called Romana65, the return of some classic salads, the introduction of new salads, new gluten-free recipes and summery desserts.

For younger pizza-lovers, Piz-zaExpress’ Piccolo menu is full of

tasty choices, including ‘Create Your Own’ pizza, and starts at just £3.95. And for budding chefs look-ing to celebrate a birthday, a Pizza Making Party will see them trans-formed into pizzaiolos so they can

stretch, toss and top their own pizza and play party games, before sitting down to enjoy their culinary crea-tions.

25 Super Heroes and their parents took part in a children’s Fun Run event organised by young twin sis-ters, Alice and Roisin O’Connell, and their mum Sarah, on Saturday 25th July.

The run was in aid of Home-Start CHAMS, the local charity which had helped Sarah and her family after the girls were born.

“It’s a fantastic turn out! The girls and I are delighted that so many children have come along”, said Sa-rah. “They really are all ‘Superhe-roes’ because they’re raising funds to help other young children whose families are fi nding things hard.”

Home-Start provides support to families with young children across Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex where parents are struggling to cope for a variety of reasons, in-cluding isolation, disability, or pov-erty, as well as multiple births.

The 1.5km run around Tilgate Park Lake was arranged with the

help of Tilgate Park Run and Ling-fi eld Runners Club and supported by Horsham based children’s party entertainers SuperHeroParties.co.uk. The run raised over £1,000 for Home-Start CHAMS.

The Loxwood Joust promises 2 weekends of mediaeval mayemEach day from 10am to 6pm. The Loxwood Joust’s unrivaled pro-gramme of mediaeval revelry guarantees a day out like no other.

A fast-paced, all action jousting tournament will amaze and astound whilst daring displays of weaponry, archery and cannon fi re will enthrall as fully armoured knights prepare to meet in a thunderous battle. The main concert stage is where per-formances from the internation-ally acclaimed singing group the Mediaeval Baebes will enchant and soothe. Wander the massive Living History Village in the ‘Mediaeval Meadow’ – a totally authentic rec-reation of a mediaeval battle camp

and browse the Mediaeval Market Place where traders and

hawkers vie for your attention as companies of actors, wander-ing minstrels, the Court Jester and dance troupes entertain and delight throughout the day.

Try your hand at archery, sup fi ne ales and dine on local organic fayre while the little ones can enjoy their very own Children’s Kingdom – a festival within a festival where the Mediaeval Groat is the currency! This “Mini Mediaeval Mayhem” in-cludes Have a go Archery, Have a go Jousting, Pelt the Peasant, Face and Wound Painting and of course the

“Bouncy Castle”.

The Loxwood Joust Mead Shack - New for 2015

Loxwood Joust Mead is the ‘Nec-tar of the Gods’ and in response to demand at past events, a NEW Lox-wood Joust Mead Shack has been created for 2015. Located in the woods at Loxwood Meadow, this golden liqueur of poets, lovers and kings may now be more fully sam-pled and enjoyed whilst experienc-ing the most spectacular mediaeval festival in the Realm.

The Witcheswood - New for 2015Dare you step foot along the

path of the witches trail but be-ware of the witches coven that re-sides within. Enter cautiously the Witchwood in the Loxwood Meadow to fi nd the Witches Hovel. Hang out around the cauldron whist they make potions and cures from herbs and be harassed whilst you hear their witch-craft tales.

The Mediaeval Crafts attending the event

Away from the main arena pres-entations and derring-do battles, a group of dedicated artisans – trad-ers skilled in authentic medieval techniques and products – bring their wares to sell, just like peddlers of old. At this year’s event in Au-gust some 30 specialist traders will attend.

The Charities the Joust is sup-porting

The Loxwood Joust is delighted to announce its support for two lo-cal charities, The Dame Vera Lynn Trust and Chestnut Tree House. These two well-known local chari-ties will be providing entertainment for all in the Children’s Kingdom and for the cost of a groat, are giv-ing children the opportunity to Pelt The Peasant, or Parent, with wet sponges. The Loxwood Joust then exchanges all groats for cash and the more peasants pelted, the more funds secured for the charity!

The Mediaeval Cooking Demon-stration - New for 2015

We are running fun and enter-taining talks and demonstrations on mediaeval cooking.

As part of this we will be pro-ducing medieaval recipe cards and demonstrating how the fayre from these times was produced. I have attached some little known, weird and wonderful mediaeval cooking facts for your information.

The Horsham Hog Roast Compa-ny - New for 2015

The Loxwood Joust makes every endeavor to support the local econ-omy and to this end a number of local food companies will also be at the event. The local Horsham Hog Roast Company, will be at the event and this will be this will be their fi rst big event of this size.

The Mediaeval Housewife’s fash-ion talks - new for 2015

The Medieval Housewife and her talk on fashion, takes place in the Learning Zone. Toni Mount (The medieval housewife) The format of the Fashion Show at Loxwood will ultimately depend on who is available to show-off their kit, but the majority will be ordinary peo-ple, a subject we fi nd the public are enormously interested in - learn-ing how ordinary women (and men) lived and worked, and dressed of course - what was their underwear like? Why would you wear an apron to church? What was your wed-ding ring like, why would you keep your hair covered, why do even the women and children carry knives and what can you tell from the way a women laced her gown?

STEAMER TRADING

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business ourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners

decided to retire. When we had nished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft.

How to make your home energy effi cient before winter arrives

There are many reasons to make your home eco-friendly. Not only will it reduce your impact on the environment, it could also reduce your bills. Oliver Paterson from Mansell McTaggart Billing-shurst guides you through the energy effi cient world to help you prepare for winter well in advance.

Now is the time to transform

your home into an eco-friendly haven. It might be the bottom of your priority list, but preparing for winter now will ensure every-thing is in working order before the cold weather arrives.

Taking measures to keep the

heat in the home is one of the most eff ective ways of making

it more energy effi cient. Did you know that ¼ of a non-insulated property’s heat is lost through the roof?* There are a number of diff erent ways for insulating your loft, and it can be relatively inex-pensive to do. If you are currently using your loft for a living space, consider insulating the roof raft-ers themselves. This is particular-ly important as you want to keep any space in use warm during the winter months.

You can also insulate your walls

to help conserve your home’s heat. This can have a large impact on your energy bills, especially if you have solid external wall. These types of walls let out a great deal of heat as they lack the all-important gap of air. If your home was built before 1919, it is likely to have solid walls. You can check whether you have a solid or cavity wall by measuring the width. If it less than 260mm thick, it is likely to be a solid wall. There are many ways of insulating your walls and you could save up to £455 a year on fuel by installing insulation**.

Draft excluding is a relatively

simple task and helps you to stop unwanted cold air cooling down your home. Doors and windows often let in a draft and you can improve them by fi lling in the gaps with foam and metal strips. If you have a fi replace but never light the fi re, it’s worth check-ing if your chimney has a draft excluder. These can be fi tted by a professional and will prevent a great deal of cold air rushing into the room. If you notice lots of drafts in your home, it might be worth enlisting the help of a pro-fessional who can assess the best methods of improvement – you don’t want to block off any essen-tial spots of ventilation.

Smart Meters are the next big

thing for conserving energy in the home. The UK Government is currently on a mission for every home to have a Smart Meter by 202***. These devices display your meter readings and the data can be accessed remotely by your energy supplier. These help you to keep track of where your energy is being spent by giving you accurate information on your energy us-age and how much you’ve spent on your gas and/or electricity. To get a Smart Meter, simply contact your energy supplier who will be able to install the device.

If you only do one thing to im-

prove the energy effi ciency of your home, it’s changing your light bulbs from halogen or tradi-tional to CFL or LED. These use up to 75 to 80 per cent less electricity!

Making your home more eco-

friendly can seem like a demand-ing task for minor gain, but a few small changes can make a huge diff erence to your property’s en-ergy usage.

Use your garden to sell your homeIt is often said that an English-man’s home is his castle and at Guy Leonard & Co Estate Agents they believe that also includes his garden. From Capability Brown to Percy Thrower to Alan Titchmarsh, the English have always been in-terested in gardening.

An attractive garden can be a wonderful feature of your home. They give you somewhere to escape to, a haven from the hustle and bus-tle of everyday life. More and more these days, gardens are somewhere to entertain friends and family – think of all those gardening adverts on the television! The garden can also add value to your property as by making the most of it, you are of-fering future buyers additional out-door space and a relaxing environ-ment to enjoy.

When it comes to preparing your home for sale, one of the most im-portant things to do in the garden is have a good clear up. Your home needs to have kerb appeal so it looks inviting when those viewers first arrive outside. The bins should be out of sight or screened off if pos-sible and the driveway should be clean and clear of any weeds. Con-tainers of scented and coloured plants placed near the front door brighten up the entrance and can also make a huge difference to a ne-glected patio.

It’s important not to neglect the

rear garden in the tidy up. By put-ting tools, pots, bags of compost and children’s toys in the shed or garage you can make the garden and patio look as big as possible as they are free from clutter. Cutting back branches and trimming hedg-es also help the garden look larger and brighter. Don’t put the garden furniture away though when you are selling your home. Set out the table and chairs ready for entertaining so viewers can picture themselves en-joying the garden.

If you have a smaller garden, you can make it look larger by grouping pots of plants closely together on the patio area rather than spread-ing them throughout the garden. Climbers and hedging growing by sheds and fencing help disguise boundaries and make the space feel bigger. Smaller garden furni-ture sets will also help the feel-ing of space in the garden as they won’t take over and cramp the room available.

A garden feature can make your outdoor space really memorable and it’s important to ensure this is in a positive way! A water feature needs to be safe for children, clean and an appropriate size for the space avail-able. A stunning tree can add height and colour to the garden but if you have the space, a summer house or garden room can really add value to your home.

Running a business or working from home is becoming more com-monplace these days and a garden room can be an attractive proposi-tion for prospective buyers, mak-ing your home more marketable. A properly constructed garden build-ing offers a great deal of potential as it can be used for many purposes from a home office to a gym to a spare room for extra guests. At Guy

Leonard & Co, they often find on viewings that people are looking to the garden for extra flexible living space so if you have the room, con-sider making the most of it with a garden studio.

When it comes to selling your home, preparing the garden is just as important as preparing the house. Sweep and tidy up, paint any neglected fences or walls, ensure

the boundaries are clearly defined and in good order, set up the gar-den furniture and use containers of plants to brighten up the garden – it could just help seal the deal.

If you’d like any advice on sell-ing your home, please contact Guy Leonard & Co Estate Agents on 01403 248222 or [email protected]

BowlsJane Gray – Pulborough BC

Despite the soggy weather, the sun shone on Pulborough BC this week with a full house of positive results and 18 valuable League points.

The bowling week began with the fi rst of 2 West Sussex Bowls League fi xtures, away against the Little-hampton based Norfolk team. As the clouds gathered, the scores for Pulborough gained momentum, with all 4 rinks ahead by half way. With no break for tea and no let-up in the rain, there wasn’t to be any miraculous recovery by the opposi-

tion and the fi nal result was a clean sweep for Pulborough, with 4 rink wins and the full 10 league points to keep them in second place in the league and within reach of league promotion at the end of the season. The fi nal score was 105/51 to Pulbor-ough. Top rink went to skip, Matt Ives, with lead, Steve Adsett, num-ber 2 Derek Swaffi eld and number 3 Malcolm Gray 32/8. They only al-lowed their opponents to score on 5 out of 21 ends in a very dominant performance.

5 rinks played against Horsham Park at their new facility on Sat-urday. The green was fast and the

banter fl ew, in a close game be-tween friendly rivals. The fi nal re-sult refl ected the skills on show, with Pulborough taking the win 108/95. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip, John Brown, with lead, Jane Gray, number 2, Colin Andrews and number 3, Chris Etherington, 28/14. Len Adsett and team also came home victorious after pulling back from 7/4 down to 25/14 after 21 ends.

The fi nal fi xture of the week was at last on home turf, against Marine Gardens in the WSBL. In torrential rain, the game became more about who had the best wet-weather gear and who could grip their bowls in the chilly conditions. Pulborough again showed grit and determina-tion, to stay ahead on 3 rinks and take overall victory, after the game was stopped on the 11th end to pre-serve the health of both the players and the green. Top rink for Pulbor-ough went to Ivan Salmon, Steve Adsett, Shaun Jupp and Jeff Davy 22/5, a fantastic result. The Marine gardens players managed to dry off in time to enjoy an early supper and a few laughs, despite another 8 points going to Pulborough after a 60/28 win.

West Sussex Tourists visit Storrington Bowling ClubBowlsJohn Wharmby - Storrington BC

The West Sussex Tourists arrived at Storrington Bowls Club on a warm, sunny, summer’s after-noon to play on the present fast, greatly improved bowling green. The 15, male, players formed 5 tri-ple teams and soon found equally-matched opponents.

Storrington’s captain, Geoff Page, and his 2 confederates found them-selves slipping, and at the 14th end they were behind the WST team, 9 - 18. However, by the 19th end they were ahead, 21- 19, but failed

to hold their advantage, fi nishing with a draw, 21 - 21.

Howard White’s team started well but by the 18th end were los-ing, 13 - 20. More eff ort enabled them to fi nish 19 - 20.

Paul Leatherbarrow’s team found themselves winning 14 - 11 by the 17th end, but could not stop the fi -nal onslaught of the tourists, thus losing 14 - 19.

Chris Walter’s team fared even worse in the second half of their game, fi nishing 12 - 22 down.

David Chinn’s team appeared to be on the way to saving the match, being ahead, 16 - 5 by the end of the

15th end, but the tourists won 4 of the 6 fi nal ends, ensuring that Stor-rington won only by 8 shots. This meant that Storrington lost the match, 86 - 94.

Around 200 people, including lo-cal MP Jeremy Quin, descended on Horsham Rugby Club last Saturday to enjoy the Annual Touch Tourna-ment.

The competition, now in its 9th year, attracts teams from all over the district and has become a main-stay of the club’s summer calendar.

Touch rugby, which is usually played by mixed teams, is gaining hugely in popularity. To add to the day teams were encouraged to wear fancy dress with a Best of British theme and duly obliged, with the best dressed award going to a team calling themselves ‘Fry Hard XXL’ dressed as English Cooked Break-

fasts. There was a Mini and Junior com-

petition running in parallel with the player of the day going to Scott Saunders age 14, and the youngest being Keira Hill age 7.

The weather stayed kind and aside from the famous Rugby Club BBQ there was music from local DJ Michael Fisher which made for a great atmosphere. The club would like to thank all the sponsors that provided raffl e prizes namely The Bax Castle, The Black Jug, Coole & Haddock, Hartley Fowler, Hep-worths, Meat in the Middle and Spice Nights.

Profi ts raised will be going to the club’s new Changing Rooms with the build set to commence in the summer of 2016.

Seagulls supporters donate to local clubJunior SportDave Smith – Sports Editor

Horsham based North West Sus-sex Seagulls, a Brighton & Hove Albion supporters club, presented a cheque for £350 to Royal United FC, a football club for boys and girls based in the Southwater area.

Under 7’s manager Mike Tydd said that the money will help their club enormously. “All of our com-mittee, managers and coaches are volunteers and we plan to use part

of this money to put one of our Un-der 8’s coaches through the FA level 1 coaching badge. The balance of the money will be used to purchase some FA Respect Barriers, which helps keep spectators back from the touch lines whilst the games are ac-tive. We have found these to be very useful in the past. We thank NWSS for their donation to us and for all the support that they off er to other local sports clubs and individuals”.

NWSS secretary Mike Wilson said “At the end of each football sea-

son NWSS look to make charitable donations if club funds allow. We thank all of our members for their support which enables us to once again be in a position where we can continue to make donations. We are very pleased to off er fi nancial help that will benefi t our local youth sports clubs and other charitable organisations. This year our sup-porters group will be donating al-most £2,000 to various good causes which is something we are very proud of”.

Horsham festival ends on a damp note CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

After two months of virtual drought conditions – and the prospect of fi ne weather return-ing, Horsham Cricket Club was dealt a bitter blow when Sussex’s attractive one day cup fi xture against Lancashire was abandoned because of persistent rain. The umpires for Sussex’s championship game earlier in the week praised the Horsham wicket but in Sunday’s water-logged conditions and heavy rain continuing to fall, groundsman Jim Askew said: “This is our worst nightmare and it’s set in for the day!”

Good crowds attended on the fi rst three days of the Festival with over 1000 cars parked at the ground, Frank King’s raffl e making around £1200 and, on the ladies’ tea tent in the region of £1000 for club funds. But, a day’s revenue evaporated

when Sussex lost the four day game inside three and the cup game on the second Sunday was to be a ma-jor fund raising opportunity, both for Horsham CC and Sussex. Much hard work is entailed in setting up the Festival, including the services of a veritable army of volunteers. So what of the future?

County cricket has been staged at Horsham for over 100 years, the club having an excellent reputation for organising successful Festivals with many memorable perfor-mances. But the game is facing yet another review with the possibility of a reduction in four day cham-pionship matches from 16 to 12. If that happens would Horsham con-tinue to be allocated a game? Hor-sham is a popular venue for players and spectators but with outground cricket already an endangered spe-cies, Sussex CEO Zac Toumazi says: “It’s great to come back to Horsham as we continue our commitment to

bring cricket to communities across Sussex but I remain concerned about the lack of support for the Festival from the local business community.”

Last year’s Festival was only saved when an anonymous ben-efactor came forward with eleventh hour backing. Recent Festivals have attracted over 10,000 attendees. Having that many visitors so close to the town centre must be a benefi t to local hotels, B&Bs, restaurants and other businesses. Elsewhere outground cricket is regarded as a prized asset, welcomed and pro-moted by councils in concert with the host and county clubs with towns like Scarborough working hard to retain their Festival and others, such as Eastbourne, Maid-stone and Folkestone pressing to hold festival cricket. So, come on Horsham – there will be great an-guish if our Festival is lost.

Local derbies will take centre stage

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Following Horsham’s relegation from the Ryman League last sea-son a number of ‘interesting’ lo-cal derbies will take place in the coming season with the Hornets competing in the same division as Horsham YMCA and Broadbridge Heath.

Horsham open the elaborately named - Macron Store Southern Combination Premier Division - on August 8 with an away fi xture at Hassocks while on the same day YM are at home to St Francis Rangers and Heath are away at Wick & Barn-ham United.

The fi rst of the clashes between the 3 local rivals comes just 3 days into the season when on the even-ing of Tuesday August 11 Horsham

host Broadbridge Heath at Gorings Mead in what will be the fi rst ever league meeting between the two clubs.

Heath then host YM on Septem-ber 1 before a busy Christmas and New Year period sees Horsham visit Heath on December 19 and then play YM on December 28 in what is Horsham’s ‘home’ fi xture..

This busy period of rival clashes ends with Heath visiting Gorings Mead on January 2 to face YM. YM’s home fi xture against Horsham will be on March 28.

YM and Heath will almost cer-tainly have new faces in the team but in Horsham’s case it will be spot the ‘old face’ as Hornets manager Dom Di Paola has completely re-build the squad following the dis-astrous season that saw them fi nish bottom of the Ryman South.

Roff ey go top after punishing Cuckfi eldSaturday July 25 - Sussex Premier LeagueRoff ey 210-9 declared (50 overs) Cuckfi eld 158 All Out (40.4 overs) Roff ey won by 52 runs

CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

In diffi cult batting conditions caused by heavy overnight rain Roff ey, put in by Cuckfi eld, rallied from 109-5 to set a demanding target and then ran through the visitors when they were mustering a victory charge.

Roff ey now top the table after East Grinstead overturned Pres-ton Nomads. The dedication of groundsman Drew Smallwood who arrived at 6am to fi nd standing wa-ter on the outfi eld and square got play under way just an hour late af-ter determined mopping up.

With Nick Patterson (5-90 in a marathon spell) getting lift from the top end, hitting two batsmen on the helmet, Roff ey were 25-2. But Captain Josh Fleming showed the way with 42 and consistent contri-butions from Usman Khan, whose 30 included 3 sixes, and the middle order, took Roff ey to 168-8. Then, after the ball was replaced by one in undamaged condition, a rousing partnership between Stuart Whit-tingham, returning after tendoni-tis, and Dan Smith carried them to a daunting 210.

Roff ey opening bowlers gave nothing away as Cuckfi eld wobbled to 9-3. And on 39-4, three falling to Leigh Harrison, who fi nished with 4-40, a big home win looked cer-tain. Until, with Barbadian Roston Chase (79) going well, Cuckfi eld on 148-5 needed 63 at little more than four an over. Enter George Fleming

– his 4-18 engineering a dramatic collapse for a comfortable Roff ey win. After some rare Roff ey fi elding lapses Mike Norris and Theo Rivers pouched towering skiers.

George told us: “We thought one wicket could turn it round – and it did!”

Leigh Harrison added: “They bowled short at us and we put it away, then we kept them under pressure with early wickets.” And Josh Fleming said: “As it turned out it was a good declaration but when their overseas was batting I thought I might have under cooked it!”

Tomorrow (Saturday August 1) Roff ey on 291 points and still with a game in hand have a challenging visit to current runners up much-fancied East Grinstead (287)

Saturday July 25 - Sussex Premier LeagueHorsham 164 All Out (43.3 overs) Brighton & Hove 136 All Out (41.2)Horsham won by 28 runs

CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham continued in winning vein, pulling off their third con-secutive victory, in a low scoring game at Brighton. The win was all the more creditable because the Horsham side included six teen-agers, three of whom were debutants.

Sussex second XI’s Sam Grant took four quick wick-ets reduc-ing Hor-sham to a par-lous 93-7. But Nathan Roberts b a t t i n g at num-ber seven held the innings to-gether with a run a ball 71 con-taining 8 fours and 4 sixes, Horsham fi nishing on 164. Employing a series of bowl-ing changes, Horsham had Bright-on in trouble at 16-3, Tom Haines striking twice. Michael Munday (3-46) and George Garton (4-31)

then took the important wickets of Philip Salt and Grant, chipping Brighton away to 118-9, from which they were unable to recover despite an irksome last wicket stand. James Johnson skippering Horsham on the day Captain Sam Attfi eld mar-ried Christie Reeves, said: “It was a slow pitch, giving no value for shots. I felt that it would help bats-men to settle if they kept facing the same bowlers so I switched our at-tack round frequently. Initially I thought 180 would be competitive but 164 was good enough! Nathan batted exceptionally well, espe-

cially when shepherding the colts at the end of

our innings.” Na-than paid tribute

to 15 year old Zac Cissotti, saying: “Al-though he didn’t make a big score he hung in there ena-bling us to put on 40

t o g e t h e r . ” Horsham, 251

points, remain fourth and to-

morrow (Saturday August 1) they enter-

tain Billingshurst, seeking to avenge their away defeat to

Sussex’s Zaidi torments Billingshurst Saturday July 25 - Sussex Premier LeagueBillingshurst 171 All Out (51.2 overs) Bexhill 174-6 (36 overs)Bexhill won by 4 wickets

CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Billingshurst won the toss, batted fi rst and at 55-1 were well placed to set a demanding target but af-

ter a cluster of mid order casual-ties could only post a moderate total, which proved impossible to defend. Scott Stratton made 34 and Jay Hartand 33 but Hurst were in deep trouble at 69-5 and although they passed 100 without further loss they were soon 110-7. A 48 run stand brought about a partial recov-ery until the last three wickets fell cheaply, leaving them all out for an inadequate 171.

In reply Bexhill suff ered two early setbacks, subsequently reaching 75-3 but despite Andy Barr’s 3-30 a killer 86 run fourth wicket part-nership almost took them over the line. Three late wickets were minor inconveniences as Bexhill cruised home with 22 overs unused, Sus-sex’s Ashar Zaidi scoring 70 not out, the next highest Bexhill score being 25. Billingshurst captain Ben Williams told the District Post: “Al-though they bowled well the wicket was fi ne but our batting let us down. Zaidi was the real diff erence be-tween the two sides – he took 3-48 and then made the match winning score.”

Foul weather caused the aban-donment of Billingshurst’s Sun-day game against the winless Sus-sex Development XI. Awarded 10 points, Hurst are now eighth on 184, seven behind Brighton & Hove and three ahead of Eastbourne. Middle-ton are bottom with 153 but have a game in hand. Tomorrow (Saturday August 1) Hurst visit Horsham hop-ing to repeat their victory at Jubilee Fields earlier in the season.
