On, November 25, the educa-tionalist Professor Guy Clax-ton came to Christ’s Hospital to give a talk on ‘Things You’ll Wish You’d Learned at School’.

He is best known for his work on ‘Building Learning Power’ and his many books include such titles as New Kinds of Smart, Learning to Learn, and What’s the Point of School?

Professor Claxton set out some of his radical and infl uential ideas in his talk. Whilst acknowledging the importance of good examina-tion results, he argued that these were necessary but not suffi cient for life in the 21st century.

Top universities and compa-nies were looking for future stu-dents and employees who pos-sessed qualities of character like resilience and who would be able to ‘fl ounder creatively’ when

they didn’t know the answers. He also pointed out that ‘suc-cess’ was much broader than just doing well in one’s career and so schools needed to recognise the importance of helping young people develop empathy in order to be able to foster good personal relationships too.

Year 13 pupil, Gillian Kintu, commented: “Although these ideas seem like things you would talk about in school, it is very easy to disregard them in our daily lives. I am very grateful to have been able to listen to Guy Claxton’s lecture.”

This was the last speaker of this term’s lecture series to which CH has welcomed Dr Rowan Wil-liams, Baroness Ruth Deech, John Agard, Dr Michael Ward, Erwin James, Ben McLaughlin and Michael Morpurgo.

Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert was shown plans for a new soft play centre in Henfi eld when he visit-

ed the village’s Leisure Centre on Friday, December 12.

Mr Herbert met Simon Thomp-son, Manager of the Centre, Eric Holder, Chairman, and Martin Tooth, Treasurer, and was shown details of their major £350,000 project.

Funding for the new building has come from a loan and grant money. In Septem-ber Hor-sham Dis-trict Council m e m b e r s unanimous-ly agreed to supply a loan of £300,000 to the Centre. The project was also awarded £50,000 by the Planning Obligations Panel.

The soft play centre plans have been developed to enhance the ex-isting Leisure Centre and will pro-vide an ongoing means of revenue to support its running costs.

Henfi eld Leisure Centre is a reg-istered charity and has become a hub for many sport and leisure ac-tivities, but it relies on fundraising to keep the building and facilities

up-to-date.The planned extension will house

a bespoke multi-tiered activity area for children, with slides, climbing areas, scramble nets, a ball pit, and obstacles. It will provide a place for children to play in a secure environ-ment.

The MP was told the new soft play centre will provide a much needed

local facility for parents and car-ers who currently travel

out of the village to use similar centres

at Burgess Hill and Brighton.

Other parts of the leisure centre will be reconfi g-ured to cre-ate two new entrances, a disabled ac-

cess lift, and a new cafe.

Building work will begin in April

next year and be complete within twelve

months. The plans are on display in the reception area of the leisure centre.

Nick Herbert said: “I fully support Henfi eld Leisure Centre’s initiative. The soft play extension will add value to the existing facilities and provide the Centre with an income so that it can continue to be a hub for health and leisure.

“I look forward to returning when the building work is complete.”

With the Christmas and New Year party season upon us, people are being reminded to check if their taxi or pri-vate hire vehicle and driver are licensed.

At a time of year when there can be an increase in unauthorised vehicles and drivers, Hor-sham District Council is encourag-ing resi-dents and v i s i t o r s alike to be alert.

T h e council is responsi-ble for the licensing of taxis and private hire vehicles in the district.

Those taking a taxi or pri-vate hire vehicle should look out for the vehicle licence plate on the rear of the vehi-cle and for the driver’s iden-tifi cation badge.

Together these are an as-surance that the car and driver are properly licensed to carry the public.

Andy Skipper, Licensing Offi cer at Horsham District Council, said: “All vehicles operating in the Horsham district are inspected regu-larly and thoroughly to en-sure that they are clean, mechanically sound, insured

and, above all, safe for the travelling

public.“ E v e r y

driver has passed an Enhanced D i s c l o -sure and B a r r i n g S e r v i c e check and

local area k n o w l e d g e

test. They also regularly

undergo medical examinations to ensure

that they are physically fi t to drive.”

Further information about hackney carriage and private hire licensing can be obtained from the council’s website.

Please send an email to [email protected] or call Horsham District Council on 01403 215471/215488.

On Wednesday, December 17, 2014, near perfection was achieved by a horse dancing to How to train your dragon.

The horse, Valegro and rider Charlotte Dujardin achieved the world record of 94.3% at Olympia.

They gained worldwide at-tention and national aware-ness by winning the gold

medal at the Olympics. It was here that Rebbecca Tay-lor captured in graphite the champion horse and off ered the drawing to Charlotte, Charlotte was bowled over by the drawing off ering her support to the self-taught local artist from near Horsh-am. Now in January Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are holding the fi rst exhibition by this highly talented art-ist. Called Dressage: Dancing with pencil- Graphite art-ist Rebbecca Taylor opens on January 8, to February 28.

Hepworth and Company, Horsham’s oldest brew-ery, is proud to present Iron Horse, brewed naturally and with totally authentic fl a-vour, strength and quality.

“It all starts in the fi eld” explains Andy Hepworth. “We forward purchase our barley so we are able to agree with our farmers which barley to grow for us. We choose a low pro-tein variety - gluten is a protein - and a use a traditional form of malting which helps the even-tual breakdown of the protein. Then our boiling pro-cess breaks down the gluten even further, and fi -nally we fi lter the beer meticulously before bottling it or putting it into kegs.” After this process, an inde-pendent laboratory confi rms that Iron House is gluten free.

“We are re-

ally proud,” says Andy. “ Iron Horse is real craft beer, brewed without additives and full of natural fl avour.

And it’s all made from in-gredients grown in Sussex,

so it’s really a local beer, traditional and pure”.

There are over 60,00 people suff ering from Coeliac disease in the UK. For these gluten is a very serious aller-gen. There are many, many more who are

gluten intolerant - many of these may well have developed their intolerance in later life and may really miss a fi ne pint of Ale - and many others are concerned about the possibility of developing intol-erance and give up beer (made from barley). No need;Iron Horse fi ts the bill. It’s a must for Christmas.

Christmas in the Forum

Christmas came early in Horsham, as Horsh-am Churches Together brought 32 churches to-gether for a spectacular

Christmas celebration and carol service.

The event featured music from local choirs and bands with a carol service all tied up with a fantastic fireworks display from Aurora Fire-works.

Bryan Steele, moderator of Hor-sham Churches Together said: It’s great that 32 local churches are part of Horsham Churches Together and have come together to put an event on that will be fun and will also keep Christ at the centre of Christmas by including the afternoons events with a carol service and fireworks.

Julie Cavallo, tourism and events officer said: “Well done to all that were involved in this years’ event which looked to have attracted the largest audiences to date.”

The Forest School are celebrating this term after being nationally recognised for their outstanding contribution in the arts. Artsmark Gold is the Arts Council England’s fl agship programme and has been awarded to the Horsham school, for its commitment to, and excel-lence in, arts and cultural educa-tion.

Head teacher Siobhan Denning said: “We are thrilled to be one of a few boys’ schools in the country with Artsmark and to achieve Arts-mark Gold is the icing on the cake.

“With only 20 per cent of schools across the country holding Arts-mark and of these, less than half being Artsmark Gold, we are thrilled to have been recognised for

the work that we do across drama, music, art, dance, media and cul-tural development.

“I would like to thank all the pu-pils, staff , parents and friends of the school whose hard work and dedication have made this award possible.”

Subject leader for music and arts extra-curriculum co-ordinator, Jane Bowen-Melfi , said: “It was fabulous to see so many boys talk-ing so enthusiastically to the as-sessor about their involvement in the arts and the enormous impact that this has on them. Through the award process we have been able to evaluate, strengthen and celebrate our arts and cultural provision.”

The Forest School is well known

for the wealth of arts provision on off er throughout the curriculum and its extracurricular clubs and ac-tivities, and prides itself on ensur-ing opportunities are open to every pupil across the school.

“Developing a love of the arts brings so many benefi ts to young people and we ensure that every boy at the school has the opportunity to experience this,” Jane said.

Not only are the boys involved, celebration of the arts is also shared with parents, families, friends and the wider community through the many concerts, school productions, shows, competitions, workshops and exhibitions that take place throughout the year both within the school and in the local community.

On Saturday, November 29, Santa Claus, an entourage of Elves and a truck full of presents arrived at Tulleys Farm, West Sussex ahead of this year’s Tulleys Family Christmas Event.

Families and children welcomed Santa before climbing aboard his tractor sleigh ride to travel through the forest to his log cabin to receive a story and a gift.

Open weekends and holidays from November 29, until December 24, Tulleys Family Christmas can be

found at Tulleys Farm, Turners Hill, West Sussex.

Surrounded by over 240 acres of picturesque countryside and farm-land Tulleys Family Christmas of-fers attractions for all the family. This year includes Santa’s Tractor Sleigh Ride to his woodland log cab-in where you can meet Santa him-self, an Elf Hunt, and Puppet Shows.

The brand new Christmas Store, will be offering a huge range of gifts and decorations as well as real Christmas trees. And why not

treat yourself to a Turkey Christ-mas Lunch with all the trimmings at Tulleys Tea room. Bookings open now.

Open each weekend until De-cember 14, and then daily from De-cember 18 until December 24, from 10am – 5pm, and with prices from as little as £7.95 per person, Tulleys Family Christmas looks set to be an unforgettable family day out for all.

For more information about Tul-leys Christmas, book tickets online, go to: www.tulleyschristmas.co.uk.

We wish you a Tulleys Christmas

What to wear for Christmas Day is a perineal issue for the fashion conscious man or woman about town. The favourite old jumper or dress is now probably covered in cat or dog hair, so shops are full of Christmas cloths. But what do you do for something dressed in a 260 year old item.

That was the question for Hor-sham’s Regency Gingerbread. Hav-ing used a 1750 woodcut of a cake seller they wanted a Christmas outfit. Fortunately a publisher of children’s books from 1804 had the answer. Now the gloriously rich molasses and ginger with a hint of citrus peel gingerbread based on a Shelley family recipe has a stunning Christmas outfit.

Adapting a picture of a Host Spiced Gingerbread seller in Lon-don, published in 1804 with a pallet of reds, blues and honey coloured browns the gingerbread looks the festive treat it is. Selling in over 30

venues across the South East it is promoting the name of Horsham and this long forgotten regional delicacy.

Launched five years ago as a Christmas treat, Lesley Ward, in conjunction with Horsham Mu-seum, has developed the old rec-ipe and created gingerbread like no other you will taste, drawing in the historic flavours of the Regency period, molasses, ginger, orange and lemon as well as oats. It sells throughout the year, but is a perfect dish for Christmas and now it has a contemporary Regency Christmas outfit.

The picture comes from a book of London trades published in 1804 and illustrates a known London seller.

Horsham Regency Gingerbread is available from the home of Hor-sham Gingerbread, Horsham Dis-trict Council’s Horsham Museum or other good retailers. For more information please contact Lesley Ward, [email protected] or see www.horshamginger-bread.co.uk.

Adrian Bell, chief executive of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Am-bulance has been named as one of the Health Service Journal’s Top 50 Innovators in healthcare for 2014 for the charity’s development of its full 24 hour HEMS operation.

The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance began operating its 24/7 Helicopter Emergency Medical Ser-vice (HEMS) in September 2013 and is the only air ambulance opera-tor in the country to provide such a service. The development of the service from 12 to 24 hours took the charity’s team, led by Adrian, nearly three years to plan and implement.

The air ambulance’s doctor and paramedic team deliver enhanced

pre-hospital care to seriously ill or injured patients. In the fi rst year of its night operations crews have at-tended over 430 patients as well as about 1,400 patients by day.

Adrian Bell said: “My name being

on this list is actually due recogni-tion of what everyone, and I include all our supporters and volunteers as well as staff , both operational and charity, have achieved in delivering to the community a service all our patients so desperately need.”

Readers of the Health Service Journal were invited to name those they felt should be considered by a panel of respected judges for this prestigious award and HSJ an-nounced it’s 2014 list of the most innovative people in Healthcare. Alistair McLellan, editor of HSJ made the announcement at a re-ception at the Royal College of Phy-sicians attended by the 50 innova-tors and guests.

Talented young musicians from three Horsham schools gave of their best on Thursday, Novem-ber 13, when they performed in the first round of the national RIBI Young Musician Competition or-ganised by Horsham Rotary Club.

Pupils from Farlington, Millais and The Forest School took part in the prestigious competition, with vocalists and instrumentalists each performing two contrasting pieces within a 10 minute period.

The competition took place in the main hall at The Forest School with music teachers and Rotarians present. The adjudicators, Mrs Ali-son Sutton, Director of Music at The Rikkyo School, and Steve Dummer, the conductor of the Horsham Sym-phony Orchestra, had the unenvi-

able task of deciding the winners. In summarising their decision, Steve Dummer explained to the students that judging a vocalist was relatively simple when compared to a variety of instruments all of which have to-tally different characters. However a decision was reached, and the vo-cal prize went to Farlington’s Olivia Middleton, with the instrumental prize awarded to pianist Joe Wor-skett from The Forest School.

Gordon McConnell from the Ro-tary Club of Horsham said: “It was a relaxed and enjoyable competition. This is the first year the Horsham Club has run the event, and we are delighted that both Olivia and Joe will go forward to the District competition to be held in February 2015.”

Europe’s finest Traditional Jazz and Blues Band come to The Hawth, Crawley on Thursday, Jan-uary 8.

With his 10-piece band, featuring a 7-strong front line, Chris plays a selection of his favourite music: from his roots in New Orleans style in ‘Bourbon Street Parade’ to the early music of Duke Ellington and Sidney Bechet ... before going back to ‘When the Saints’!

The Big Chris Barber Band com-bine all these ingredients into an exciting, and often moving, evening of world-class jazz.

Tickets cost £19.50 (discounts: £17.50).

Tickets can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth.co.uk.

Members of new performing arts group Terra Nova PA took to the bandstand at Horsham Carfax on Saturday, December 20, to spread a little festive cheer to shoppers on the busiest shopping day of the year.

The group braved the chilly con-ditions to sing a selection of Christ-massy tunes ahead of the start of their new range of dance and show choir classes, which start in Janu-ary.

Principal Bethany Landskroner said: “There’s been a great atmos-phere among the shoppers and we’re really grateful to our friends and supporters who have stood in the cold to cheer us on as we sang.”

The group was joined by rising “Prince of Swing” star Nathanael, who is Bethany’s younger brother and was fresh from having support-ed Michael Bublé at his Birmingham NIA Arena concert. Terra Nova of-fer classes in dance and show choir singing for young performers aged 4-21. More information can be found at www.TerraNovaPA.co.uk.

Farlington Sixth Former Rebec-ca Walker had a lead role in last month’s production of ‘Hello, Dolly!’ at Horsham’s Capitol The-atre which ran from November 11 to November 15.

Rebecca, who holds a drama scholarship at Farlington, played Minnie Fay in the Horsham Ama-teur Operatic and Dramatic Soci-ety’s excellent production which combined enthusiasm with profes-sional quality.

The popular musical is set in New York at the turn of the century and centres on the work of the char-ismatic matchmaker Dolly Levi.It features well known musical num-bers such as ‘Elegance’, ‘Put on Your Sunday Clothes’, ‘Before the Parade Passes By’ and, of course, ‘Hello, Dolly!’

Rebecca has been involved with the Society for a year. She started working on backstage props before appearing in the chorus of ‘Sweeney Todd’ and has built the confi dence to audition for major parts. The

company has been in rehearsals since May, meeting three times a week as the production date neared.

As hat shop assistant, Minnie Fay, Rebecca enjoyed the dance number, ‘Elegance’ and playing someone her own age. Her previous role in the School production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ was a male character, so she relished playing a naïve and bubbly girl.

Rebecca said: “I really enjoyed the show and the atmosphere back-stage and feel sad that it is now fi n-ished. Everyone in the production was supportive and very friendly. I’m looking forward to auditioning for the next production, ‘The Wiz-ard of Oz’.”

Farlington’s David Thomas said, “Rebecca played a real character role with an opportunity for both comedy and romance. Rebecca, to-tally convincing with her American accent, gave a superb performance which combined winsome charm and excellent comic timing. A star in the making!”

Saturday 20th December, 2014 – London 3 South East LeaguePulborough 20 – 40Horsham

RugbyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham’s first half dominance proved too much for Pulborough, threeconverted tries quickly determining

the outcome of the game despite Borough out-scoring the league leaders after the interval.

Horsham attacked mercilessly straight from the off and with the wind behind them were unstoppa-ble as Ben Pirt, Tom Johnson and Johnny Ordidge – rampaging home from the half way line - all posted tries, Tom converting three times.

With Borough unable to gain much possession a cricket score beckoned until a breakaway try by Ollie Coombe-Tenant - converted by Tom Hoey – reduced the deficit.

But, Jamie Gibbs, fresh from a hat trick of tries in the previous game went over, Tom Johnson’s boot again obliging to give Horsham a 28-7 lead at the break.

The second half was a different story. Josh Hulkham aggravated a previous shoulder injury and lay on the pitch for a long time awaiting an ambulance. Meanwhile, the game switched to a more sheltered, mud-dier pitch and with Horsham relax-ing Borough came into their own, Tom Hoey converting a penalty.

They might have scored again but crucially dropped the ball before another penalty fell short. Then Sean Tuhakaraina produced Hor-sham’s fifth, bonus point, try Tom Johnson again converting before Ollie Coombe–Tenant drove over, the kick going begging.

Then, amid cries of ‘knock on’ Tom Johnson crossed the line in the corner before Ollie emulated for Borough, both kicks going astray, although some spectators adjudged Johnson’s differently, the game

ending 40-20 in Horsham’s favour.Horsham Head Coach Nick Stock-

er said: “As a local derby this was a potential banana skin but we played some good rugby in the first half, showing that we can score from different areas.” Horsham skip-per Seth Wise described that half as: “The best 40 minutes of rugby anybody has played against us all season.

Horsham blew us away, but in the second half they were just av-erage.” With a personal tally of 20 points, Tom Johnson - yet to be on the losing side in Horsham colours – added: “Pulborough are no bad side as they demonstrated after the interval.”

On January 3, Horsham, one point clear of Dartfordians, visit Watford against Fullerians in the third round of the Senior Vase before entertaining Park House in the league on the 10th, when 7th placed Pulborough visit bottom club Lewes. Horsham host Pulborough in the quarter final of the Bob Rogers Sussex Cup on the 24th.

Horsham Cycling celebrated their Christmas dinner and awards evening with an excellent turn out at the Rookwood Golf Club. In addition to the presentation of the various Time Trial Trophies, Ali Bruce won the Club Person of the Year award for his efforts in a number of events during 2014, in-cluding organising the Tour of Isle Wight weekend – and providing excellent cake baking for the four Reliability Trial rides.

Robbie Calder took the award for the best article in Horsham Cy-cling’s quarterly Chain Line maga-zine, describing his epic 875 mile LEL trip – London to Edinburgh

and back to the capital in under 116 hours. During the evening £168 was raised for the Dave Rayner Fund, set up in 1996 to support young Brit-ish cyclists pursuing their dreams

to become top class riders at home and abroad, champions Dave Millar and Adam Yates being early benefi-ciaries.

Mike Ward won the prize of a SKODA racing jersey, presented to the Club via Station Garage, Broad-bridge Heath, and signed by Great Britain two-time Olympic Gold medallist, Olympic Bronze medal-list and five-time world champion - Ed Clancy MBE. Sporting Review of the yearDave Smith – Sports EditorMartin Read – Sports Reporter

We are lucky to have a rich vari-ety of good sport to savour in our area. It has been a memorable year: on the rugby field Horsham won the Bob Rogers Cup and, well placed for elevation, currently top the London SE3 table. And, back in that same league after winning every game in the Sussex echelon, Pulborough are now consolidating their position.

Horsham Hockey ladies won the Sussex Cup again - and the indoor league - and the men are posting a serious challenge in their division of the South Premier League. Hor-sham’s Neil Boniface romped home for another Barns Green Half Mara-thon victory in addition to winning other races further afield.

Horsham staged a highly success-ful county cricket festival, securing the immediate future of the iconic event and Roffey pulled off the Sus-sex Premier League title in style, a fantastic achievement. Horsham’s Michael Munday took the league bowling award for the third consec-utive season, and, following back to back promotion, Billingshurst come into the top flight for the first time, giving us three local teams out of the ten in the Sussex-wide Premier League for next season.

The saga of the new ground con-tinued for Horsham FC with delays and complications causing frustra-tions for the club.

On the pitch Horsham FC, after flirting with the relegation zone, finally finished a safe but slightly disappointing 16th, although that is a final position that they would gladly accept come next April given their current form. Horsham YMCA FC won the Sussex RUR Cup in May after a penalty shoot-out against East Preston; they also finished fourth in the Sussex County Divi-sion 1. Broadbridge Heath FC won promotion into the Sussex County Division 1 after finishing runners up in Division 2. YM are currently in the top half of the table while newly

promoted Broadbridge Heath sit mid table.

Horse racing also put Horsham on the map when Sire de Grugy from Gary Moore’s Cisswood Stables won the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and Gary’s son Ryan pulled off a major coup by carrying off the prestigious Melbourne Cup in front of a massive passionate full house of racegoers.

Horsham Cycling enjoyed anoth-er great year of competition, tours and social activities and, nearing the club’s tenth anniversary, their Sunday morning rides from the Carfax have almost clocked up an astonishing 90,000 miles.

Southwater based racing driver Jolyon Palmer has enjoyed another great year and, much to the delight of local fans, is heading for F1 com-petition.

Robbie Calder set a Horsham Bowling Club record by winning all six of their finals in which he competed, while Pulborough and Billingshurst Bowls clubs both had successful summers.

Our junior sport continues to im-press with clubs such as Atlantis Swimming Club, Horsham Hawks Basketball Club and Horsham Gym-nastics Centre all producing win-ning teams and individuals. Atlan-tis won their division and secured promotion to the Premier league, Hawks teams continued to impress, the under 12 teams run of having won every game since March 2013 has just come to an end. Horsham Gymnastics continue to shine hav-ing recently produced 15 regional Sports Acro champions that has added to Horsham Gymnastics Centre’s growing reputation as one of the leading clubs nationally. Our many junior football teams con-tinue to thrive with clubs, large and small, turning out each week in all weathers. In addition our local schools have produced winners in show jumping, badminton, fencing and many more sports.

Can 2015 keep the winning mo-mentum going for our local sports people? Continue reading the Dis-trict Post and all will be revealed!

Saturday December 20 – Ryman League Division One SouthHorsham 1 – 1 Walton & Her-sham

FootballMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham’s Jack Page celebrated his one hundredth game for the Hornets with a dra-matic goal five minutes

into extra time, earning a valuable point. Gary Charman’s sickness-induced absence gave an oppor-tunity to Jahmahl King in his first game since returning from Hast-ings United, Horsham being oth-erwise unchanged.

The Hornets were aggrieved when a controversial refereeing decision seemingly robbed them of an early breakthrough after Anthony Sto-rey’s in-ducking corner looked to have been taken into the goal by the visiting keeper. With protests coming to nought, Walton rubbed salt into Hornet wounds with a goal after a quarter of an hour – an elu-

sive cross enabling Gareth Chendik to post the ball home beneath goal keeper Gareth Williams.

That success invigorated Walton, necessitating Williams first to fend off a shot from Mensah and then scramble a 35 yard mule kick over the bar at full tilt. With the Hor-nets unable to seriously threaten the Walton goal Williams needed to produce another good save when Mensah attacked again.

Trailing by the single goal at the interval Horsham came out posi-tively in the second half, Tony Nwa-chukwu side-stepping the defence to test the opposition keeper with a good save maintaining Walton’s clean sheet. Then the woodwork was called into play, keeping out another Nwachukwu strike with the keeper helpless. In end to end play Wal-ton retaliated, but Chendik’s touch was mercifully off target. Horsham, though, kept going with Nwachuk-wu again proving a handful, chal-lenging the visitor’s defence, but to no avail. A red mist moment then opened the door for Horsham when the dangerous Mensah was sent off

for violently reacting to a Woodford tackle. After Page came on as a re-placement Horsham applied some pressure with a thwarted attempt and then a corner. Ten man Wal-ton then resorted to time wasting with a lengthy substitution and a prolonged shirt changing routine until Hornet’s Napper latched onto a Nwachukwu supply, heading it for Page to sensationally back kick it into the roof of the net to the de-light of home fans. Horsham were still not quite done but Williams’s booming free kick came just a little too late.

Horsham remaining bottom, two points behind their nearest rival but with a game in hand, now enter a crucial phase in their endeavours to evade the disaster of relegation - because of earlier postponements, Hornets have 12 games scheduled before the end of January.

Horsham team: Williams, Ham-ilton, King, Storey, Gilbert, Wood-ford, Nwachukwu, Morley, Miller, Ampleford (Page 76), Smith (Nap-per 31). Unused subs: Akande, Bid-good, Blaney.

Saturday December 20 - Sussex County League Div 1Broadbridge Heath 2 - 0 Hor-sham YMCA

FootballTom Norris - Football Reporter

Broadbridge Heath secured the lo-cal bragging rights and completed a league double over rivals YM, as they ran out 2-0 winners in a scrappy Division 1 encounter on Saturday.

The visitors squandered two gilt-edged chances early on, before Heath striker Tiago Andrade struck to open the scoring right on the stroke of half time.

Neither side really did enough to deservedly win a dismal encounter, but the hosts took their chances, and Ollie Moore’s header midway through the second period, secured his side the three points and their seventh win of the season.

YM assistant manager Dean Pot-ter commented: “As a spectacle it was probably one of the poorest games I’ve seen for a long time. There was no quality, but I don’t think that the pitch helped at all.

“I think it was just one of those games for us where we didn’t turn up and in derby games you’ve got to turn up. I think they’ve really only had one shot on goal in the first half and scored, and yet we could have been 3-0 up. Liam [Hunter] missed a big chance and Nick [Sullivan] also.

“I think that we huffed and puffed and Taylor [Smith] came on and did well, but again they’ve probably had one chance in the second half. And that’s what’s killing us at the mo-ment if I’m being fair; it’s in the two boxes, and especially conced-ing goals as a team. Everyone looks at the defence, but as a team we are not defending well and we’ve got to iron that out really.

“Today, too many players didn’t turn up for us, and in derby games you need to have everyone firing be-cause, and it’s a cliché, form doesn’t count in these sorts of games. The players are disappointed but we’re all disappointed, because you don’t want to be losing to Broadbridge Heath as a YM connection.”

YM (4-2-3-1): Fox, Carden, Dugda-le (c), Crane, O’Carroll (J. Brown 20), Gedling, Hibbert, Evans, Hunter (T. Smith 67), D. Sullivan, N. Sullivan. Unused Subs: Gannon, Hyett, Flack.

Saturday December 20th 2014 - South League Premier Division 2Marlow 4 Horsham Men 3

HockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

For the second week running Hor-sham conceded early goals to lose a game they might have won and were unfortunate to come home without at least sharing the points.

They started well, were denied a penalty flick in the opening min-utes and had at least 65% of first half possession, but Marlow scored twice against the run of the play to lead 2-0 at the interval.

A second half short corner, one of only two conceded by Horsham, enabled Marlow to go further ahead. But, a change of formation rein-vigorated Horsham and they soon equalised, Matt Hough converting a short corner, John Burroughs jink-

ing past four opponents to knock in an excellent goal and Cerdic At-kinson levelling from a set piece. Marlow, though, benefited when the ball hit the foot of one of their players and Horsham stopped, con-vinced that the umpire would award a seemingly certain free hit, only for play to be waved on enabling Mar-low to crash the decider into the roof of the net.

Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We seem to be allergic to crossing the M4 – we’ve had three games north of there without gaining a single point! We’ve greatly improved our strike rate from short corners but it’s frustrating to return pointless when it could have been so different.”

Going into the mid season break Horsham remain fourth on 24 points. On January 10th they have a home cup tie against Brighton & Hove, returning to league action with an away game against Ashford, Middlesex on the 17th.
