Residents face paying more as council loses £1.6 million

Residents face the prospect of be-ing hit in the pocket because of a £1.6 million hole in local budgets caused by the Government “pass-ing the buck” by withdrawing fi -nancial support to Horsham Dis-trict Council.

Horsham councillors must de-cide in February how to fi ll the gap. Three of the suggestions to be con-sidered are a council tax increase, a £1.50 all day Sunday and bank holiday charge in Horsham town car parks, and changes in waste collec-tion service.

The shock news came among what the council called “a fl urry of ministerial announcements” just before the start of the Christmas break.

It has brought about a disagree-ment between the Conservative-dominated district council and the

Conservative controlled Govern-ment over the cuts. One councillor says the Government has moved the problem of cutting spending to local councils.

The Government confi rmed that within two years Horsham will lose all the £1.6m in revenue sup-port grant it currently receives from central Government through taxa-tion and it will need to become to-tally self- suffi cient. This reduction in grant is in addition to cuts total-ling £1.1m over the past three years.

Leader of the council Cllr Ray Dawe said: "We have one of the lowest council tax levels in the country. At the same time we have been able to maintain a high level of service to our residents.

“However, while we shall persist with trying to fi nd further effi ciency savings and minimise any increased charges, the options for reducing costs are becoming more limited.

“Eff ectively, in his aim of reduc-ing the national defi cit, the Chan-cellor has simply moved a problem on to local councils. What is clear is that while the council has a sound

fi nancial position for the short term, unless we take action now as the Government grant disappears, we shall have a huge defi cit in the future. Councillors will therefore need to discuss a medium term strategy of how to tackle this when

they meet for our annual budget meeting in February 2016."

At a full council meeting before Christmas the council confi rmed its commitment to a new £12.3m leisure centre at Broadbridge Heath and in reaching that decision coun-

cillors were very aware that such a reduction in Government grant was probable. At their meeting, it was made clear to them that the council will need to look at how it can bridge this huge loss in government sup-port.

Winning ways of young gritter competition namers

Youngsters from Rudgwick and Ashington found some winning names for gritters in a county wide contest.

And they will see them out and about on lorries this winter.

West Sussex County Council has announced the winners of its an-nual ‘Name A Gritter’ competition for schools.

Samuel Milton, of Rudgwick Pri-mary School, impressed judges with the name Ice Cracker.

Other winners were Sussex Snowfl ake, thought up by Ethan Schmidt of Ashington First School, and Grittinator, created by students of Burgess Hill Alternative Provi-sion College.

The winning pupils won a high street voucher each, along with a grit bin, grit salt to fi ll it and snow shovels for their schools.

The newly-named yellow gritters will be out and about in West Sussex this winter keeping the roads safe.

Photographers make up calendar for kids charity

Budding photographers have helped put together a calendar of Sussex scenes for a charity.

The Love Sussex charity calendar is now available in all Chestnut Tree House shops.

The calendar, which aims to raise money for Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s charity in East and West Sussex, showcases the spec-tacular sights that Sussex has to off er by only including imagery that has been taken by local budding photog-raphers.

The 12 winning photographs of Chichester Cathedral, Petworth Deer Park, Bosham, Bury Hill, Chancton-bury, Cuckmere Haven, the Dough-nut Sclupture on Brighton Beach, Goring Beach, Kingly Vale, Long Fur-long, St Leonard’s Beach and Tilgate Park, were chosen out of hundreds of entries after residents were invited to submit their photographs for the chance to be included in the calendar.

All of the money raised from the calendars will go towards help-ing fund the vital specialist pallia-tive care services that Chestnut Tree House provides to 300 children and young people with life-shortening and life-threatening illnesses in East Sussex, West Sussex and South East

Hampshire. The calendars will be available in

all 10 Chestnut Tree House charity shops located around Sussex includ-ing Billingshurst Arundel, Bognor Regis, Brighton, Chichester, East-bourne, Hove, Seaford, Worthing and Uckfi eld.

The calendar was devised by Sus-sex-based print, design and market-ing specialist Evonprint.

Its managing director of Evonprint, commented: “We are delighted that the calendars are now available in all Chestnut Tree Shops and I urge the public to visit their local store to pur-chase one. As well as raising money for this fantastic local charity, it also showcases what a beautiful county we live in and celebrates the talents within Sussex. We were overwhelmed by the response we received from this campaign and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person for submitting their favourite location and photographs.”Pictured are Evonprint with some of the Love Sussex winners. Charity searches for “Snow Angels” to help older people this winter

Angels are being sought in West Sussex to help clear snow for vul-nerable people.

Although the county has so far had a mild winter, the dangers of icy and wet footpaths in harsher weather can result in older and vulnerable people being left stranded in their homes during bad weather.

Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, is urging people to become ‘Snow Angels’ to help reduce feelings of isolation this winter.

A ‘Snow Angel’ is simply someone who clears ice and snow from outside their house and their neighbours’, if they are less able to do so themselves.

Becoming a Snow Angel is as easy as equipping yourself with rock salt and sparing a few minutes at the be-ginning and end of the day to grit. Alternatively, you can get in touch with your local council and fi nd out if they have a volunteer scheme you can join.

Alan Benson, 46, is a wheelchair user. He fi nds getting around in icy weather very diffi cult and in the past has not left his home for a month due to a fear of falling out of his chair. He said: “I had my very own Snow Angel once; I don’t think they even real-ised. I lived in a block of fl ats and one winter it snowed heavily. It was par-ticularly treacherous and very nasty. Someone kept clearing the outside path from the front door so I could get out. I’m forever grateful; it was such a generous act.

“I think it would be great if people became Snow Angels this winter. It can make such a diff erence to peo-ple’s lives.”

Sophie seven, Michael fi ve and Hannah Thompson, three, are Snow Angels in their village. Together with their dad, Chris, they clear paths with a homemade, push-along plough.

Chris Thompson said:“The chil-dren push the plough about 100 me-tres up and down our street to help clear access to our elderly neigh-bours’ houses.

“They know how the snow and ice can create problems for our neigh-bours and stop them going out to the shops or to see friends. They like to help me as much as they can to make sure they can still get out and about

in the bad weather. Plus, they enjoy being able to build a much bigger snowman with the snow they col-lect.”

Julia Crear, Regional Director (South) of Living Streets, said: “Each year thousands of people in the UK are admitted to hospital after slip-ping on ice or snow. This prevents a lot of people from leaving the house during bad weather, which can re-sult in loneliness and all the health problems associated with not being fi t and active.

‘We hear a lot about the impor-

tance of gritting and making roads safe for drivers, but pavements and walkers are often overlooked. This winter, we are urging not only the government to ensure these peo-ple are not forgotten, but also ask-ing everybody to think about their neighbours.’

More than 200 snow angels will be recruited around the country to help communities this winter. Visit the Living Streets website to fi nd out more about being a Snow Angel and how you can join them: http://www.livingstreets.org.uk/snowangels

Goodbye to a great manThe woman pedestrian who died after a collision with a motorcycle on the A283 at Storrington has been named as Eileen Garas, 90, of Ham-pers Lane, Storrington.

Police are still appealing for wit-nesses to the collision with the yel-low Honda which happened at about 10.25am on December 19.

Anyone who can help may email [email protected] or call 101 quoting Operation Bin-ham.

Her son Anthony Garas said in tribute: "My mother, Eileen, was born in Staff ordshire and lived in London before moving down to Sus-

sex with her husband in 1973, shortly before he passed away.

"She was well known in the village and worked in Greenfi elds for a num-ber of years before its closure.

"She took full advantage of her new leisure time and enjoyed being outside in her beloved garden, tend-ing the fl owers and feeding the birds.

"Eileen was a loving, devoted mother and wife. I loved her dearly and she will be missed by all who knew her.

"We are deeply shocked and sad-dened by our sudden loss and we ask that our privacy be respected at this sad time."

Tribute to crash victimThe man in charge of helping youngsters who struggle on the fringes of society has handed over the reins after 24 years.

David Standing, chief executive offi cer of YMCA Downslink, which includes Horsham, has decided to retire, handing the role over to Chas Walker.

Staff organised a special event to say ‘thank you’ to someone they described as “a great man whose vi-sion, hard work and steadfastness has helped Downslink become the organisation it is today.”

When David started 24 years ago Hove YMCA, as it was then known, operated as a single site youth club employing four staff members. Un-der David’s leadership Downslink has grown to become one of the largest YMCAs in the country work-ing across three counties and pro-viding a range of services to over

10,000 children, young people and their families.

The YMCA says its main focus has always been providing safe housing to young people who would other-wise be homeless. In 1995 the char-ity opened its fi rst supported hous-ing project in Brighton. 20 years on and its now operates 12 projects that house over 500 young people, including Horsham Y Centre and Crawley Foyer.

When asked how does it feel to have built one of the largest YMCAs in the UK David says, “It feels quite exciting to have seen the organi-sation grow, sometimes I feel a bit overwhelmed when I step back and look at what we do now. It’s very gratifying to see that the organisa-tion really has made a diff erence to a lot of people’s lives.”

Staff are pictured at the celebra-tion party.

BREAKING NEWSCLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS

Friday afternoons means only one thing to public spirited youngsters. The students volunteer each week to help organisations in the Horsham area.

And in the New Year they will begin another placement.

Farlington School says volunteering can make a real difference to the girls’ own lives and to the lives of those in the local community. The school be-lieves it develops and enhances skills such as team work, organisation, communication, time management and tolerance.

And for many of the girls it can help guide and inform them with future career choices and it can be a useful addition to their university and future job applications.

A long-standing placement has been Rapkyns Nursing Home, Broad-bridge Heath. The school says a place-ment at this beautiful country home will start in the New Year. Set in 40 acres of landscaped grounds, it cares for elderly and frail people with de-mentia and it provides specialist care for people with neurological condi-tions.

Girls spend time in conversation with the residents, reading newspa-pers and books with them. The resi-dents enjoy their piano playing as well as other musical instruments. Several have volunteered here to gain experi-ence for a career in medicine.

Various charity shops have pro-vided valuable placements and girls have worked at Horsham Matters. The students spent time working on the till, sorting bric-a-brac, pricing items, arranging window displays and generally being helpful in a customer-facing retail environment.

Two girls have been helping at the QEII Silver Jubilee School in Horsham which caters for pupils with severe or profound and multiple learning diffi-culties. They give practical support in

the classroom environment and find playing with the children extremely rewarding.

Whilst the weather sometimes con-spires against them Warnham Nature Reserve has proved to be a popular placement. The girls take part in the outdoor environmental tasks such as clearing the bird hides and planting the heather beds.

On home ground, a firm favourite is most certainly helping in Farling-ton Nursery. The school says the 17 and 18-year-olds love spending time with the little boys and girls there and always come back with stories of how adorable the toddlers are. The high-light is always when they go to see them in the Nativity Play, as they did in December. Lucy Bedwin, Farling-ton’s Nursery Manger, comments, “The children in the Nursery love their afternoons spent with ‘the big girls.’ The interaction between the age groups is very special and unique; very different from any other relationship formed either at Nursery or home.

“The children have great fun trying to spot ‘their big girls’ on our after-noon Wellie walks around Farling-ton’s parkland. Recently, we found them having a yoga lesson in the sports hall, without hesitation the boys and girls joined in, totally un-phased by the surroundings because ‘their big girls’ were there!”

A school spokesperson said: “Many continue with their placements into holiday time. This may be to fulfil the service element requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, but mostly it is because the girls want to spend their own time volunteering. It is an optional activity here at Farling-ton, but it is a truly wonderful reflec-tion of the caring and confident girls here in the Sixth Form that they wish to offer more.”

Pictured are some of the locations of the volunteers.

Tony and Katie meet Sinbad in AfricaAnimal lovers Tony and Katie Kett met the lion they help to keep alive for a Horsham-based charity during an 18,000-mile round trip.

Sinbad the lion is kept at the Born Free Animal Rescue and Education Centre at the famous Shamwari re-serve in South Africa.

While enjoying a safari at Sham-wari District Post news editor Phil Dennett met Tony and Katie, who live in Charlwood, near Horsham.

The couple were making a check on Sinbad, who because of his history is not as well developed as he should be and unable to be allowed to roam free on the huge estate. He has to be kept safely within a spacious bush enclo-sure, viewed from platforms.

The Born Free centres provide a sanctuary for lions and leopards res-cued from appalling captive condi-tions. The centre says they cannot be returned to the wild and will always rely on the charity’s care helped by the fi nancial support of people like Tony and Kate.

At present people can adopt Sinbad and Achee the lions for £30, as well as other animals.

For Tony and Kate it was the fi rst time they had seen Sinbad , apart from pictures. Achee was rescued from a small compound, also in Ro-mania, in 2004. The pair live happily together at Shamwari.

Sinbad was rescued in 2007 from a cramped cage in a Romanian zoo. His condition was such that it was clear that he could never return to the

wild. He had previously been used as a beach photographer’s prop.

Katie said: “Sponsoring Sinbad all started when my next door neigh-bour bought me sponsorship of Sinbad for a present, and I eventu-ally took it over myself. I almost cried when I saw him at the sanctuary. He was there, in front of me, so like in his picture. His mane looked like it had been washed and shampooed.

“Sinbad is not in there because he is unwell. His problem is he is less

than half the size he should be be-cause he had been in captivity before being rescued and his mother had never taught him hunting skills.

“I was very lucky to see him. They treat them as normal as possible, so they can wander well into the bush away from the viewing platforms.”

Katie, 70, does not rule out another call on Sinbad but adds: “Tony says he is leaving everything to Rhinos. That depends on whether he goes before me.”

The couple were making a check on Sinbad, who because of his history is not as well developed as he should be

West Sussex Fire & Rescue welcomed six new retained fi refi ghters into the Service following their pass out at Worthing Fire Station on Friday (11 Dec).

They have have just completed an intensive two week initial train-ing course and now have the essen-tial knowledge and skills to join their colleagues at fi re stations around the county.

Three of our new recruits - Calum Soraghan, Toby Hawkins and Chris Monk – will be working from Hay-wards Heath, while George Wright will be stationed at East Wittering, Tim Batten will be at Midhurst and Darryl Clement will be at Lancing.

It was a particularly special day for retired fi refi ghter Chris Clement, who worked at Shoreham in the early 1970s before moving to Worthing Fire Station, from 1976 until 2000.

He proudly watched as his grand-son, Darryl, joined the service.

The 26-year-old, who will be based at Lancing where they both live, said: "This is something I have always wanted to do. It's great to be following in Grandad's footsteps."

Retained fi refi ghters are paid to be 'on call' for the fi re service, meaning they are often employed elsewhere or are at home when they receive a pager alert, but are ready to spring into im-mediate action to deal with a 999 inci-dent.

In West Sussex, retained fi refi ght-ers fully crew 14 of the 25 fi re sta-tions and are vital to the delivery of the county's fi re and rescue service.

They receive an annual retaining fee, as well as additional payments for any incidents or community safety events they attend.

They receive regular training in fi refi ghting, rescue and extrication techniques, equipping them with the skills to deal with fi res, road traffi c accidents and a wide range of other emergencies, to save lives in their lo-cal community.

The new fi refi ghters were presented with their certifi cates by Deputy Chief Fire Offi cer for West Sussex, Lee Neale, who welcomed them into the fi re service family. He said: "It's a pleas-ure to welcome our new fi refi ghters into the team and I wish them a long and rewarding career in the Fire Ser-vice. Retained fi refi ghters make such a valuable contribution to their local communities and our Service couldn't operate without their considerable dedication and commitment.

“The retained system only works thanks to the support of local em-ployers. There are many businesses in West Sussex that recognise that al-lowing their staff to become retained fi refi ghters benefi ts the community, their staff and themselves.

"We still need more fi refi ghters to be on call at many of our Fire Stations. Retained fi refi ghters come from all walks of life and we would encour-age enquiries from all sections of the community."

Stand by presents fl ing back to shelves in 2016

Christmas presents fl y back on to the shelves In January because of faulty goods, misleading claims and substandard services, according to new research from Citizens Advice.

The group advises that there have been a number of changes recently resulting in the new Consumer Act 2015 and new rights for consum-ers on a number of issues, including digital download purchases.

Central and South Sussex Cit-zens Advice is calling on residents in Horsham and surrounding areas to use their new consumer rights to hold businesses to account when goods and services don’t come up to scratch.

Got a dodgy download? Previous-ly, it wasn’t clear if you could get a replacement when digital content such as fi lms, games, music or e-books were faulty. Now, the law is much clearer and you’ve got a right to a repair or replacement.

Want your money back? You may have tried to take a faulty item back and been off ered an exchange or a credit note. From 1 October, if you get a product that’s faulty, poor quality or not fi t for purpose, you can return it within 30 days for a full refund.

Bamboozled by the small print? In the past, terms and conditions were often tucked away in the small print. Now, important terms and condi-tions must be made more promi-nent.

This makes it easier to know what you’re signing up to, but also makes it easier to compare contracts so you know you’re getting the best deal.

Poor quality purchase? It can be hard to prove that something just isn’t as good as you were expect-ing. The new Act states that prod-ucts must match the description given. If they don’t, your rights to a refund can come into play. Can’t re-solve a dispute? Resolving a dispute has been made easier. Previously consumers would often have to pay to take businesses to a small claims court to get their problem sorted. Now it’s easier for people to go via Alternative Dispute Resolution, which uses other routes to solving disputes such as going to an Om-budsman for free.

Anyone who needs advice on goods and services they’ve pur-chased can call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06, go online at www.citizensadvice.org.uk or contact your local Citizens Advice.

Collyer’s recognised for “life” courses

Collyer’s College work running AS-DAN courses has led to it being ac-knowledged as a Centre of Excel-lence, in recognition of outstanding practice during 2014/15.

ASDAN is a curriculum develop-ment organisation and awarding body, off ering programmes and qual-ifi cations that explicitly grow skills for learning, skills for employment and skills for life.

Developed and managed by practi-tioners, ASDAN grew out of research work at the University of the West of England in the 1980s and was formally

established as an educational charity in 1991.

Maggie Walker, Chief Executive Offi cer of ASDAN told the Horsh-am-based college: “Your centre was nominated by Regional Managers at ASDAN and this certifi cate refl ects our commitment to celebrating suc-cess and rewarding achievement, of both learners and those working with them.”She added: “We hope that our relationship with your practitioners and your learners continues to grow and thrive over the coming years.”

Picture by Hannah WarrenPolice sealed off part of a road in Horsham after a medical emer-gency involving a chemical.

999 staff were called to an ad-dress in Mill Bay Lane, Horsham to a report of a medical incident at about 1.15pm on December 27.

It is believed a 76-year-old man came into contact with a chemical powder and was taken to hospital.

Police closed the road up to the

junction with Worthing Road and a cordon has been put in place as a precaution whilst specially trained offi cers ensure the scene is safe and secure.

Inspector Andy Sanford of Sussex Police said the cordon and road clo-sure were temporary, precautionary measures, with no risk to the pub-lic and added: "We are not treating this as a suspicious incident.”

Chemical incident alertsponsible for ASDAN, said: “We are especially proud to have received this award after only our fi rst year of operation. Our students are continu-ally working on their ASDAN qualifi -cations as a key part of our inclusive curriculum.”

Students and staff celebrated the certifi cate during a ceremony at the college, hosted by Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley.

Sally told the students: “You have a Centre of Excellence Certifi cate be-cause you are offi cially excellent! We wanted to celebrate that with you to-day and thank you and your wonderful teachers for working so hard.”

Sally served students and staff with cake, baked for the occasion by the college’s refectory team, to celebrate the achievement. Emily Jones said: “Having our eff orts recognised in this way will certainly help inspire our stu-dents to strive for more success in the future.”Vice principal Steve Nicholls said: “Great work from everyone in-volved and I know that the students and staff are very much looking for-ward to moving into their new base in the Graham Baird building, which will be opening in the New Year.”

A 14-year-old boy was robbed in Hor-sham Park in the Christmas break.

Detectives are appealing for infor-mation about the incident.

The boy was walking from the duck pond in Horsham Park between 10.40am and 10.50am onDecember 23 . He heard people walking behind him and was pushed in the back, causing him to fall to the ground.

He saw two people running off and

was approached by a blonde woman, who he believes to be in her 40s, who asked if he was okay. She walked back towards the duck pond with him. He then noticed that his phone, a black iPhone 4S with a black charging case, was missing and asked the woman to ring it, but they were unable to hear it.

His two attackers are described as both wearing grey hooded tops. One had short blonde hair and the other

short brown hair, but he could not say defi nitely if either was male or female.

Detective Sergeant Karrie Bohan-na said: "This was obviously a very alarming experience and we are keen to speak to any witnesses, especially the woman who went to his assis-tance.

"If you have any information, please email [email protected] or call 101 quoting serial 00 of 23/12."

Ready for Dry January?Dinosaur Island wins staff top awardStaff who brought dinosaurs to Horsham district to amuse chil-dren could be heading for a Eu-ropean award after winning a na-tional title for their work.

The Dinosaur Island at Southwa-ter, near Horsham, has proved a hit with youngsters since its opening in the summer.

Horsham District Council’s Parks and Countryside team has received international recognition by win-ning the 2015 International Green Apple Award for Environmen-tal Best Practice for the develop-ment of the distinctive play area in Southwater Country Park. It is now in line for a European award in 2016.

At a special ceremony in the Pal-ace of Westminster the award was presented to the council’s Cabinet Member of Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen and Parks and its Countryside Development Offi cer, Anna Chapman.

The award recognises the sustain-able nature of the new recreation ground and the way it “helps oth-ers to help the environment”. The new “Dinosaur Island” play area was offi cially opened by the coun-cil in July 2015. The winning entry now goes forward for further judg-ing andthe possibility of repre-senting the UK in the Brussels-led European Business Awards for the Environment.

The council says that since its opening, Dinosaur Island has proved immensely popular with

hundreds of children of all ages and abilities. Improved and addi-tional parking at the Southwater Country Park site and a dinosaur themed makeover at the café have also added to the enjoyment of the experience

The play area features an ar-ray of play equipment and special eff ects such as an active volca-no, red hot lava fl ows, a tar quag-mire, a dinosaur swamp and a pre-historic jungle.

The park was developed in con-junction with eibe Play Ltd, a lead-

ing designer and manufacturer of outdoor playground equipment.

Cllr Chowen said: "I am delighted that the team at Horsham District Councils Parks and Countryside Department has been recognised by this prestigious award and my congratulations go out to all those involved in the planning, develop-ment and launch of our fantastic new play area. It is an imaginative themed play space that commemo-rates a past age and it is sure to keep children entertained for many years in the future.”

Drinkers trying for a dry January will get support from Horsham District Council’s Wellbeing team. The coun-cil is backing Alcohol Concern’s 2016 Dry January campaign.

The team is promoting the month at Horsham Hospital, Horsham Li-brary, Horsham Job Centre and Stey-ning Leisure Centre , where people can fi nd out more information on re-ducing alcohol intake and recipes for alcohol free cocktails.

Experts say Dry January is an op-portunity to reassess relationships with alcohol, as well as gaining some great health benefi ts such as weight loss, better sleep, more energy, clear-er skin and no more hangovers.

They claim the sense of achieve-ment in completing a month without alcohol will be “amazing” and they will save money, with the average person calculated to spend £50,000 on booze in their lifetime.

The council says why not take part in Dry January at work or join the 2 million people who cut out booze last year and build your own fundraising page at www.dryjanuary.org.uk?

A YouGov survey of more than 2,000 UK adults reveals women’s “wine o’clock” starts after the clock strikes 5pm (93%). However, it is men who are more likely to drink every day and those that drink also tend to start earlier in the day.

The survey also revealed the boozi-est regions, with more people start-ing “wine o’clock” at 1pm in London and the South East when drinking.

Launching the Dry January cam-paign, Tom Smith, Director of Cam-paigns at Alcohol Concern, said: “All over Britain people will relax with a drink after a stressful day, or even at lunch, without realising the harm it can do to their health.

“Having a month off from booze helps people realise that “wine o’clock” is often more of a habit than a pleasure.”

This comes after new research has shown just how eff ective Dry January is at changing behaviour. The most comprehensive study yet has shown that six months after complet-ing Dry January campaign, 65% of people made a positive change to their drinking habits by drink-ing less, or cut-ting alcohol out completely.

The history of Suff ragists in Horsham

BusinessMartin Read – News Reporter

Great strides have been made to-wards equality. Protest move-ments have brought this about, notably those dedicated to enfran-chising women.

The militant Suff ragettes were formed in 1903 and featured in the recent fi lm portraying Emme-line Pankhurst and Emily Davison, leading fi gures in the movement. But, far less is known about the Suff ragists (founded by Millicent Garrett Fawcett six years before the Suff ragettes) and at its zenith having some 500,000 participants compared with just 2,000 members of the Suff ragettes. Unlike the Suf-fragettes, the Suff ragists were law abiding, non violent, received less publicity and comprised mainly middle class women.

Local historian and author Franc-es Stenlake gave an enthralling il-lustrated talk on the the Sussex Suff ragists at Horsham Library, saying: “Women like Edith Bevan of Cuckfi eld (whose father was a Local Director of Barclays Bank) were in-fl uential and expert at networking with like-minded ladies, such as Alys Russell, fi rst wife of philoso-pher Bertand. Alys proclaimed ‘It’s quite fashionable to go on suff rage marches – much better than golf or hunting!’” The marches certainly were popular, Horsham delegates – some on bicycles and horses, and accompanied by a policeman - joined a Brighton to London march at Crawley where around 500 peo-ple signifi ed their support. Im-passioned speeches were made en route to a mass gathering in Hyde Park with as many as 70,000 at-tending.

Three years earlier an assembly at Horsham’s King’s Head Hotel was over subscribed with many unable to gain entry. Mrs Hurst subsequently

hosted a meeting in Park House and there were other get-togethers in the Town Hall, The Causeway and under the trees in the Carfax near the Crown Inn (disrupted by youths with rattles, participants requiring police protection). Another open air meeting had to compete with the town band, while at the Black Horse Hotel “dramatic entertainment” – one act plays - supported the cause. Some prominent men campaigned, such as Charles Corbett, Liberal MP for East Grinstead, whose wife Ma-rie was very much involved.

The Suff ragists set up their Hor-sham HQ at 60 West Street where they sold sweetmeats, fancy goods and literature to raise funds. 60 West Street is now occupied by Kokoro Sushi (appropriately Kokoro means “heart, soul and spirit”) but the street was re-numbered in 1923 and a pavement plaque at the entrance of nearby Cotswold Out-door (formerly the site of Timothy

Whites) proclaims that as the ven-ue.

Press coverage was generally supportive, if slightly patronis-ing and quaintly phrased: “When the suff ragists apply themselves to peaceful pursuits then everyone is prepared to commend them” and “Assurances have been given that peaceful methods are to be pursued and Horsham breathes freely once again.”

The advent of World War 1 termi-nated Suff ragist activities, lobbying apart, but when women success-fully managed jobs vacated by men they could no longer be denied and in 1918, with certain qualifi cations, women over 30 were given the vote.

Frances Stenlake’s talk was punctuated with many contempo-rary references and her fascinating book “The Mid Sussex Suff ragists” is compelling reading (available from frances_stenlake.com - £9.50 including p&p).

So here’s my Slimming World jour-ney so far. I have always been big, even as a kid I was usually one of the biggest in class, and so this carried on through my life.

That’s not to say I was inactive, but I’ve always been overweight. Why did I never do anything about it before? Because I’ve always got away with it. Despite being big I still did every-thing I wanted to, I didn’t let it stop me doing things, although I know it affected how good I could do them.

However, a year or so ago I did start to feel it more and more, maybe it was the turning 40 thing, but I was struggling. Walking was becoming a hassle, my blood pressure had gone up, my skating was suffering and I felt more conscious of my size and how it was affecting me. I felt heavy for perhaps the first time in my life. I tried to ignore it, then tried to diet at home without any support or a prop-er plan, and didn’t lose anything, and earlier this year it just couldn’t carry on. My wife found out the details of a local Slimming World group, and didn’t give me a chance to find an ex-cuse not to go!

Attending that first group was a big thing for me, to admit I needed help, to walk in to that group as possibly the only man there and to have to stand on the scales in front of some-one and a stranger knowing how big I was, I was very nervous. Now I never weighed myself, to be honest I couldn’t find scales that would read my weight! But I knew I was a bit over

25 tone, well it was more than a bit. My first weigh in I was 28 stone 9lb. I was shocked, I was close to 30 stone! Perhaps that moment was the trigger I needed.

That first day I sat with the other new members and Claire the con-sultant talked us through exactly what Slimming World was. Do you know what, it suddenly clicked that this was no voodoo magic, this was about healthy eating, not measur-ing everything, counting calories, eating 3 cabbages a day or anything like that, just going to back to basics. Healthy food, cutting out the rub-bish, limiting the treats!

I went away and knew I had to give it 100% I followed it to the letter, filled in my food diaries and that next weigh in, I lost a stone! A whole stone in 1 week! I was truly shocked, and at that moment I knew I had found something that could work for me. And so it went on. Every week I would go and the weight was falling off me, and all I did was follow the plan 100% I still ate really well, lovely big sal-ads, curry, chilli, steak, fish and lots of veg, fruit and more, and I never feel hungry. I have only 3 times had ‘naughty food’, and I am now so used to eating good healthy food when I did actually have my old favourite, fish and chips, I didn’t enjoy it, the grease was too much!

Almost every week I stay at group for the talks with other members, I find that support and the ideas you get are invaluable for a successful outcome. I

My Slimming World Story - losing 10st 10lb in 34 weeks

try to be an active member, posting up my meal ideas on Social Media and also giving advice if I can. Slimming World is changing my life, and I enjoy see-ing it doing the same for others! I am humbled when people say my loss has inspired them to join and try and lose weight themselves, I hope they get out of it what I have so far.

So where am I now, 8 months since joining? Well as I write this I’ve just got under 18 stone for the first time in probably 25 years! My trousers have gone from a 46” to a 36”, my t-shirts from 5xl to xl, even my wedding ring has been replaced as it was falling off my finger! We recently had a family day out to Chessington, and I have been able to fit on all the rides with

my youngest daughter. When she hugged me and said how she loved going on the rides with Daddy now he was thin I choked up. That one thing had made it all worth it. The next day I went skateboarding with my friends, a part of my life that has been with me on and off since I was a kid, and something I really enjoy, and now with the weight going it just gets better and better each time I skate. I’m doing tricks I haven’t done for years as I am more agile and lighter.

But my journey is far from over. Losing 10st10lb in 34 weeks is fantas-tic, but it’s made me rethink my final goals. When I started I just wanted to get under 20 stone, now I want to get under 15! I might even end up losing

half my original bodyweight, I could end up being a size I haven’t been since I was at school, that’s why it’s hard now to set my final target, I will keep going until I look in the mirror and think yes, that’s who I want to be. All I know is that I never want to go back to being the nervous, unhealthy man of nearly 29 stone who walked in to Slimming World on April 20th 2015. Slimming World is changing my life, and I can’t thank Claire the con-sultant and all the other members for all the support and advice they have given me, plus of course my family for their love and help, plus putting up with my now constant preaching about healthy eating and showing off my latest Slimming Wold award!

Their theatre show, which has run all over the country for the last 3 years , will take you on a ‘tantalis-ing trip back to when Pop was at it’s peak!’ With their highly energetic and visual performance, this mam-moth show, featuring over two hours of the biggest 70s hits ever recorded, is not to be missed. From the towering majesty of Queen, John Miles, The Carpenters & ELO, the band also perform stunning renditions of chart toppers by10cc, Andrew Gold & Pilot., amongst so many.

These are just some of the high-lights in this pop packed show, that also includes the ultimate ‘Pin-Up tunes’ from David Essex, Abba, Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Boney M, The Osmonds, David Cassidy, Elton John, Kiki Dee, T.Rex , & Ol-ivia Newton John, plus the Bay City Rollers, you cannot help but join in the fun!

Since 2011, the show has toured throughout the UK, and they have whipped up a ‘Seventies sea of nos-talgia’ to ecstatic fans, wherever they play. Where the women sing along to every word, and the men ‘air guitar’ at will, it really is one huge 70s party, and everyone is up and dancing in the aisles - Yes, it is that kind of show, which has been described by many venues as the ‘finest 70s show, in years’, with Janey’s extraordinary vocals, in particular, being described as ‘West

End quality’.The top flight band of musicians

alongside Janey and co-lead vocal-ist Mark Keen, have a wealth of ex-perience worldwide & include Gui-tarist/Vocalist Greg Hart, who has played and written for Asia, Sweet, Mike Oldfield & Donna Summer, former Ultravox & Danni Minogue bassist Gary Williams & the wizard-ry of musical director & keyboardist

Andy Stewart, who is the grandson of the late great Arthur Askey!

Completing the line-up is the powerhouse drummer Andy Fox, who has played with Thin Lizzy’s Brian Robertson.

The band's highly energetic and visual presentation does not skimp on humour either, and amongst the supreme musicianship, fun is guar-anteed, with plenty of laughs along

the way, in this cavalcade of a show. With genuine 70s costumes with all the glitz and blitz you would expect from this colourful era of denim, satin and leather, and completed with visuals, backdrop and original ‘Chopper Bikes’, this show really is not to be missed.

So join the band in their travelling 70s time machine, back to the days when pop really was at its peak!

Beautiful ballet The Nutcracker on the big screen

Looking for a Christmas gift? Tick-ets to a screening of George Bal-anchine’s The Nutcracker, on The Capitol Theatre big screen, make an ideal festive treat!

Tchaikovsky’s beloved melodies transport the young, and young at

heart, to a magical world, where mis-chievous mice besiege a battalion of toy soldiers and an onstage blizzard leads to an enchanted Land of Sweets.

In the New York City Ballet’s fa-mously extravagant staging, Bal-anchine’s stunning choreography

shines, amidst awe-inspiring set pieces, ornate costumes and grand one-of-a-kind visual eff ects, like the one-tonne Christmas tree that grows to an astonishing 40 feet.

Don't miss the ballet on January 7, on the big screen at The Capitol.

The District Post in 2015 - a look backAfter another year of delivering the news to the district, we remember what made the headlines over the past year

January February

May June

September October

The year got off to a dramatic start after West Sussex Senior Pilot David Williams was forced into conducting an emergency landing at Gatwick Airport during Virgin Atlantic fl ight VS43 after the Boe-ing 747’s landing gear failed.

Mr Williams’ experience and skill ensured that all 447 passangers and 17 crew were left unscathed by what could have been a fatal incident

In one of the more entertaining stories of 2015, a former resident of the district made a particularly long trip to his favourite Indian restaurant - the Billing-shurst based Blue India - for a takeaway.

Mr Lee made the £41.30 order from the Neth-erlands and undertook the 350 mile journey to collect it before travel-ling back to Amsterdam to eat the meal with his family.

As election fever hit the nation, The District Post off ered a guide to all eight of the local candidates standing in Horsham.

After the longstanding MP Francis Maude announced that he would be standing down at the election in a statement back in February, the town saw the Jeremy Quin win the seat for David Cameron’sConservative Party with nearly 25,000 votes.

After months of buildingand preparation work, the new John Lewis At Home and Waitrose store offi cally opened doors to the public.

Boasting around £3.5 million worth of stock over 43,000 square feet, the John Lewis store made a superb addi-tion to Horsham’s many shopping options.

Since opening, the store has remained a key feature within the town.

Perhaps the largest international story of the year, the refugee crisis has made a huge impact on lives across the world, with millions fl eeing confl ict across several nations.

One local business in particular, Charters Local independent food store, went the extra mile by off ering up their cellar to store much-needed food supplies for the families stranded in Calais.

The BBC’s ‘Great British Menu’ programme drew millions of viewers throughout its run on television, but for a time no one knew that the winner of the contest, Matt Gillan, is in fact the head chef at The Pass at South Lodge Hotel, Nr. Horsham.

Matt was named as the winner after cooking a goat-based main course for the centary banquet of the WI.

Because we’re happy! It’s offi cial! Horsham is second happiest town in the UK

Over the last week, we’ve spoken to the people of Horsham about what makes them happy, and it’s no surprise that it’s the people

that make the community smile.Following a feature in The Times

newspaper on Friday, April 10, Hor-sham was ranked as the second

happiest town in the UK. Second only to Bridport, the setting of ITV hit Broadchurch, it’s a testament to how happy we all are that we cel-

ebrate second place. The following six pages con-

tains quotes and articles from local schools, organisations and busi-

nesses, each giving their take on what makes our town so happy. We hope you enjoy our special feature and that it puts a smile on your face.

March April

July August

November December

For one night, The Capitol Theatre rolled out the red carpet to premiere the movie ‘A Dark Refl ection’, created by Horsham-based Fact Not Fiction Films.

What made the fi lm particularly interesting was the way in which it imbued thriller action with a very serious message about aerotoxic syndrome, based on the experiences of Director and former commercial pilot Tristan Loraine.

Give us a smile because earlier this year, Horsham was named the second happiest town in the UK!

After conducting a feature, The Times bestowed the honour on the town, citing Horsham’s top schools, markets, restaurants high satisfaction and much more.

Only Bridport, the town featured in Broadchurch, ranked higher on the list.

Near the end of July, the popular and enegetic Don Lock was fatally stabbed by another driver whilst in his car on the A24.

Mr Lock’s family, still grieving, thanked the work done by those on the scene who did their best to keep Don alive.

Matthew Daley, who attacked Don in a case of road rage, appeared in court later in the year charged with murder.

In the wake of the Shoreham Air Show crash, where the pilot of a Hawker Hunter Jet lost control mid-air and plunged in to the A27, killing 11 men, thenation mourned the tragic accident.

Horsham joined other towns in paying their respects to the victims - three of which came from West Sussex - by making a book of condolences available to the public to sign.

Overlooked war heroes were fi nally offi cally remembered when more than 40 new names were unveiled at Horsham’s war memorial.

Descendants watched on as the chairman of Horsham District Council performed the ceremony for service men and women who gave their lives 65 years ago during WWII but were only just publicly acknowledged near the end of the year.

Near the conclusion of 2015, police appealed to the public for help after 22-year-old local man Anthony Ransom was found dead on a rail line near Rowlands Road, Horsham, after apparently being struck by a train.

West Sussex Police wanted more information to help give them a better idea of Anthony’s fi nal moments before his untimely death.

As we near the end of 2015, Doug Crawford, CEO of My Home Move, the UK’s leading provider of mov-er conveyancing services, shares his views and predictions for the property market for the coming year.Housing prices and market growth:

“A lack of housing supply, low interest rates and greater lending availability will see property prices remain high during 2016. We ex-pect to see UK property prices rise by between 6% - 10% over the year, meaning the average property price could hit a high of £315,000 for the fi rst time – eleven times the aver-age salary. Alongside this we’re predicting housing transactions to grow at a conservative 4.6%, mainly driven by the new build market, as the dearth of housing stock contin-ues to dictate.” First-time buyers:

“Gifted deposits will continue to play a signifi cant role in the fi rst-time buyer market. In 2015, 1 in 20 UK properties (64,000) were purchased using a gifted deposit and we expect to see this increase by 2.5% throughout 2016 (100,000 properties).

“The cost of an average starter home increased by 3.8% to hit a re-cord high of £215,000 in 2015 and as prices are not expected to fall, it’s a fi rm indication that the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ will be raided again. This, coupled with changes to the pension system brought in last April, now means the Bank of Mum, Dad and Grandparents has additional capital available to help fund the fi rst-time buyer market.

“Despite the Government’s pledge to deliver 400,000 new homes by the end of the decade, 200,000 of which will be aff ord-able (capped at £250,000 outside of London and £450,000 inside the capital) 2 in 3 people believe these will still be too expensive if priced over £120,000.

“This means that for those who don’t have access to a gifted de-posit, getting on the property lad-der is going to be a real struggle. Throughout 2016 we expect to see 40,000 new homes built, only 50% of the government’s annual target of 80,000, but just how many of these end up in the hands of fi rst-time buyers is still up for discus-sion.” Second Steppers:

“For those wishing to move up the property ladder, we expect the situation to remain static for the next twelve months, as the lack of housing stock continues its stran-glehold over the market.

“While changes to the Stamp Duty levy have had a positive im-pact for those wishing to sell above the £250,000 mark, it seems to be in vain - for unless those at the top of the ladder are encouraged to downsize, there just isn’t anywhere for ‘second steppers’ and ‘middle movers’ to go. Our research shows that estate agents favour additional changes to Stamp Duty (45%), in-cluding the removal of the hous-ing tax for retirees at the top of the housing ladder, to keep the market moving.”Buy-to-Let:

“We expect the introduction of a 3% Stamp Duty levy for Buy-to-Let investors and second homeown-ers, announced during the Autumn Statement, will turbo-charge the housing market over the next four months as people race to beat the deadline before the changes bite in April. This will inevitably push up property prices in the short term, especially in locations popular with Buy-to-Let investors, such as Lon-don.

“However, this measure will change the economics for investors in the long-term. Currently the Buy-to-Let market accounts for 14% of property transactions annu-ally and we wouldn’t be surprised to see this fi gure fall over the second

half of 2016; resulting in an overall market slowdown.”

Cash Buyers:“As always, cash is king – and for

those in the position to buy without a mortgage the market is moving in their favour and will continue to do so for the next year. These buyers have the fl exibility to make quicker and higher off ers than their mort-gaged counterparts, and are often the gazumpers able to secure the property of their dreams.

“However, the latest changes to Stamp Duty are likely to take their toll towards the second half of the year, as cash buyers look-ing for investment properties will have to pay the 3% surcharge. This is a bitter pill for the everyday in-vestor, and a double-whammy for the top end of the market - which has already seen a 20% reduction in sales following the bankers’ bo-nuses scandal, which took cash out of the market, coupled with the 12% Stamp Duty levy introduced in De-cember 2014.” Gazumping:

“25% of our conveyancers have seen an increase in gazumping dur-ing 2015, and as the market con-tinues to favour cash buyers and those with fl exible fi nancing, in-stances of gazumping are likely to increase throughout 2016. A recent My Home Move poll of UK Estate Agents revealed that they witness on average 2 cases of gazumping a month.”

Interest Rates:“Any rate rises will be slow and

steady, and will be in advance of the

economic need for them increase. This will allow the 2% infl ation tar-get to be planned for rather than reacted to. Commentators remain split on when it will happen, with estimations ranging from Q4 2015 to Q1 2017. However the earliest My Home Move would expect to see a 25 basis point rate rise is Q3 2016.”

Help-to-Buy:“Despite the good intentions of

the new Help-to-Buy ISA, we fear it may do nothing to revitalise the fi rst-time buyer market for at least three years, due to the cap on the amount people can save.

“As such we expect to see con-servative market growth (4.6%), an increase in 95% LTV mortgage products from lenders and an an-nouncement that the ‘Help to Buy’ mortgage guarantee scheme will continue past its deadline of 2016, until FTB activity picks up.” Right-to-Buy:

“Extending Right-to-Buy to housing associations on a voluntary basis will create more home own-ers but concerns exist over when and where the replacement social housing properties will be built. In the meantime we expect additional pressure will be put onto the pri-vate rental market as more people seek accommodation, in turn bal-ancing the Buy-to-Let market as it works to recover from the implica-tions of 3% SDLT imposed upon it.”

Horsham shut out their landlords

Monday December 28 – SCFL Pre-mier DivisionHorsham 4 - 1 Horsham YMCA

FootballMartin Read – Sports Reporter

On paper this was listed as a close match in the long standing clubs’ fi rst ever league encounter, but it turned out to be a one sided aff air.

Coming in to the fi xture in fi fth place, YMCA were just a point behind third in the table Horsham and there was nervousness in the Horsham camp – until the Gorings Mead ten-ants went ahead courtesy of an own goal in the second minute, after YM keeper Mark Fox parried unsuccess-fully. Horsham then shot wide and a further strike skimmed over the crossbar before, with some of the 676 spectators still streaming in, Captain Joe Shelley’s completely unstoppable wind-assisted Bobby Charlton-style 40 yard mule kick crashed into the top netting.

Ambitious Horsham fans predicted a six nil drubbing, a distinct possi-bility midway through the fi rst half when man of the match Mark Knee put Horsham three ahead with an awkward bouncer. Despite a rare YM attack the landlords were making lit-tle Impression and matters worsened

when Dean Carden was sent off .Early in the second half Horsham

went four nil up after Darren Boswell, open and unmarked on the left, over-came the keeper with another high ball. Horsham then eased off , allow-ing Luke Gedding YM’s fi rst real shot. But, a Horsham corner ran across the goalmouth and then YM earned two corners of their own, followed by keeper James Shaw running out for YM’s Nick Sullivan to round off the scoring with a late consolation.

YM’s Dean Potter said: “We had a big crowd here and although we drew the second half 1-1 I feel a bit let down – we need to pick ourselves up now”, while Ron Moulding added: “Disap-pointingly we were rather lethar-gic and gifted three early goals from which it was impossible to recover.”

Understandably, Horsham were in better spirits – Manager Dom di Paola telling the District Post: “We got off to a fl yer and perhaps they were a little unlucky. Eastbourne Town, the only team to beat us to date, keep winning so we need to press on,” delighted Horsham CEO John Lines said: “We took our foot off the pedal in the second half but I’m very happy with the result!”

8th in the table Loxwood on Sat-urday (January 2) while YMCA en-tertain Broadbridge Heath (11th). Horsham then visit Whitehawk in the Quarter Final of the Parafi x Sus-sex Senior Cup on Tuesday January 5 before greeting Littlehampton Town (9th) on Saturday 9, when YMCA are at East Preston (19th).

A lovely morning to go out in the fresh air to watch a traditional Christmas holiday local derby foot-ball fi xture and even better for the Heath committee when you’re playing away from home and have nothing to do but enjoy the game.

Unlike Heath manager Steve Painter who again had several of his key players missing but still man-aged to put out a team good enough to compete with most teams in the division.

Heath came into the game on a

good run of form with 7 wins from 8 games and Painters team had the perfect start when Stuart Ches-ter scored in the 3rd minute of play with a chip from 25 yards over the advancing Loxwood keeper Har-rison Hilager. The home side also had a few regulars missing and was playing some attractive football and drew level in the 10th minute when a cross from the right should have been cleared comfortably by a Heath defender but while he hesi-tated Sam Beard nipped in to poke the ball under Michael Chester for the equaliser. In the 30th minute Heath’s Andy Waddingham received the ball from Scott Weller in space on the edge of the penalty area but his fi rst time eff ort went high over the bar and within a minute Heath

paid for the missed chance when a long through ball saw Harry Bach-elor beat the Heath off side and go on to calmly slot past the advancing Chester to give his team the lead. The home side continued to have the lion’s share of possession but without troubling Chester too much and Heath came close to equalizing a few minutes before the break when a McDermott corner was met at the near post by Waddingham but his goal-bound fl ick was defl ected just wide of the post and from the result-ing corner Martyn Flack headed over the crossbar, at the other end Beard cut in from the left and hit a beauty which Chester saved well to deny the striker a second.

Loxwood created the fi rst open-ing in the second period and it was

the lively Bachelor who came close when he tried to chip Chester but the keeper stretched high to push

the shot over the crossbar and a few minutes later Charlie Pitcher should have done better when well posi-tioned but shot wide of goal into the

side netting. Heath fi nally started to get to grips with the lively home-side but clear chances were still few and far between, Stuart Chester did well to get behind the Loxwood de-fence on the right and pulled the ball back to an unmarked Ollie Moore 8 yards from goal but for once Heath’s leading goal-scorer’s touch let him down and the opportunity was missed and 10 minutes from time Adam Wicking drilled a low shot wide of the Loxwood post and Mar-tyn Flack headed wide when well placed but the home-side held on to victory which sees them move up to 8th place in the division.

Team: M.Chester, Robinson, Howard, Flack, Chester (M.Clark 70), Waddingham, Weller (McDer-mott 37), Moore, Purkis, Legrange.
