ST. BASIL GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Stockton, CA THE BASILIAN NOVEMBER 2016 Volume 30 Issue 11 Focusing on Christ during and following the Presidential Election By the time you receive this issue of the Basilian, the Presidential Election will almost be over or maybe even have passed. I think we can all agree that the lead up to this Election has been one of the most rancorous, negative and divisive in quite some time, if not ever. The question comes to mind is how we as Orthodox Christians will respond during and following the Election. If we focus on Christ by heeding the Church’s wisdom, we will keep from “sinking” into anger, hatred and despair. First, we should ask Christ to remove any anger or hatred that we may have towards one of the candidates and/ or to their supporters. As we hear in the Scriptures: “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:31-32). Harboring anger and hatred leads nowhere good and hurts us as much as, if not more so than, the people who we are directing our anger at. By removing anger and hatred, we are liberated from these destructive passions and leave room for peace to enter within us, trusting that God is ultimately in charge. We also are called to heal any of our relationships and friendships that have been negatively affected during this highly-charged political season. Disagreeing about politics isn’t sinful—harboring hatred and anger towards somebody because of their politics is; and therefore, we should heed the Scriptures by forgiving and seeking forgiveness. We should also pray for whoever is elected. While many people have very strong and negative feelings about one or both of the candidates, both the Scriptures and the Divine Liturgy tell us that it is God’s desire to pray for them. “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all people, for kings and all who are in authority,” (1 Timothy 2:1-3). Also, at every Divine Liturgy, we pray the following petition: “For our country, for the president, and for all in public service, let us pray to the Lord.” We pray that whoever is President will lead with wisdom, fairness, integrity and justice and if they’re not leading in such a manner, that they will have a change of heart. We pray for the President because we believe that our prayers do make a difference, even though it may not always seem like it. Having said all this, some may still feel a sense of despair and anger regarding these two candidates. To keep from “sinking” into these emotions, let us also remember that as Orthodox Christians we put our ultimate faith in God, not in human beings. We put our ultimate trust in the One who has true power and authority. Our salvation comes from God, not from humans and only One is perfect; only One is sinless and that is Jesus Christ and He is the “King of Kings, and Lord of Lords” (Revelation 19:16). Christ is the One who fought, died and rose for us. He rules with perfect humility, integrity and love. Christ will have the last word over all forms of injustice, corruption, indifference and evil and all those who are responsible for these actions will have to answer to Him. Our Lord will return in triumph and glory. His Kingdom — a Kingdom which we are called to inherit and which is a Kingdom of love, peace, harmony, and joy--will reign forever, unto the ages of ages. Amen. With love in Christ, Fr. Panagiotis

THE BASILIANNOVEMBER 2016 Volume 30 Issue 11

Focusing on Christ during and following the Presidential Election

By the time you receive this issue of the Basilian, the Presidential Election will almost be over or maybe even have passed.

First, we should ask Christ to remove any anger or hatred that we may have towards one of the candidates and/or to their supporters.

Amen.

PRESIDENT’S CORNERThis month and next we have two of our largest philanthropy projects: November is our eighth annual food drive to benefit the Stockton/San Joaquin Emergency Food Bank; and in December our parish will participate in the annual Christmas giving program sponsored by The Salvation Army. The Emergency Food Bank and its food pantry partners provide hundreds of families each week with nutritionally balanced foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, and nutrition and health education. Our donation of nonperishable food items, and cash donations for food purchases, are especially appreciated during the holiday season. Thank you for your generous support of November’s food drive and December’s Christmas giving program.

And don’t forget to bring your gently used fall and winter clothing to the parish hall to drop off in our clothing bin. Haven of Peace, Stockton Shelter for the Homeless, and the clothing bank at St. Mary’s Dining Room greatly appreciate cold weather clothing and accessories for men, women and children!

ST. BASIL PRESCHOOLWe have so much to be thankful for!

I asked a few students what they are thankful for. I received answers such as “my mommy”, “my daddy”, “my cousin”, “my dog”, “my lunch”, “my cat ,Marmalade, that lives with another family because my Mom’s “llergic” to cat hair.” There were a few that were insightful responses such as “the wind, “the rain,” “the hay for the horsies to eat,” and “my full tummy”. But the comment that moved my heart did not come from a child, but her mother. The family is from India, and the child is bi-lingual, though she does speak Punjabi more than English. The mother stopped by my door one afternoon to tell me how pleased she was with our school. She shared that her daughter came home from preschool one day andtalked and talked about Father Pete meeting us in the church and talked about (diversity); how God loves ALL His children, no matter WHAT we look like; how tall we are, whether we have curly hair, our eyes are blue, brown or green. It was a lovely message that the children embraced.“Thank you. I am so happy my daughter is learning all about God,” the mother said. As you might know, our first goal on our preschool Vision Statement is, “The children will have the knowledge of God’s Love upon departure of St. Basil Preschool.” May we all reach deep inside this Thanksgiving and remember HIS GRACE and love and be THANKFUL!

PARISH COUNCILInterested in being part of the Parish Council? The Parish Council assists the Priest in the administration of the affairs and ministries of the parish. According to Fr. Harakas, a well-known Orthodox theologian and Professor, “Parish councils help do the work of the church. And ‘the work of the church’ is to continue the work of Jesus Christ in the world. The council is one of the ways the laity of the Orthodox Church share in the church’s work of preaching, teaching, blessing, sanctifying, directing, guiding and realizing the community of believers.”If you are interested in being on the Parish Council, or wish to nominate someone, here are a few things to keep in mind:

It’s Turkey Time already, and it seems we just celebrated Greek Festival last week. It’s amazing how time flies when you’re having fun! This year’s Turkey Luncheon will be held on Sunday, November 6, following liturgy, by Philoptochos and the Bestolarides family. This luncheon traditionally consists of delicious roasted turkey and all the trimmings for only $15 adults, kids 12 & under $5. Of course, this includes pumpkin pie and whipped cream. Please plan on attending! Philoptochos recently completed an event which was a very important ministry for both our parish and an outreach to the community. We sponsored an Estate Planning session with a local attorney, Paul Kozlow, as featured speaker. He explained the complexities and importance of a trust, will, and durable power of attorney for health care. It was well attended. Philoptochos made available a document entitled Five Wishes which when completed tells exactly what you want at life’s end. There are copies of this form available in the church office if yo,u didn’t get one.

At our October meeting Philoptochos had a guest speaker from Donor Network West explaining the possibilities of saving and healing lives and how they facilitate organ and tissue recovery for transplantation. Just go to DMV and get a pink dot on your drivers license. This indicates you want to be a donor. There are hundreds of individuals on waiting lists waiting for kidneys, livers, hearts and other body parts. Harvested tissue is used to mend bones and muscles. The program was very interesting, and Philoptochos hopes to offer more of these types of sessions. Upcoming events at Philoptochos meetings include a video presentation of the recently held Clergy-Laity Conference held in Nashville. Delegate, Patty Manuse, welcomes anyone interested to please come to our meeting on November 15 in the church hall at 6:00 pm. A light dinner will be served. On December 13, 11:30 am, a festive Christmas luncheon is scheduled at Papapavalos Restaurant. Reservations must be confirmed by December 10. Please call Eleni in church office. More to follow at our upcoming meetings: January is fun time at general meeting. Paint and Sip -- We will provide the drinks for you to sip while you paint. Who knows, you might be a hidden Monet! The session led by our very own Mary Carroll. Still more to come -- On February 14, Valentine’s Day, we will have Marlene Champlin, affectionately known as “The Squash Lady” speaking about planning low glycemic meals with hard shell squash. She will share receipts, samples and squash to take home. This lady has a personality plus and is a hoot to watch! , We are introducing some new and different activities at our meetings. It’s not work-work-work all the time. We encourage all our members to attend. If you need transportation please call Bobbe 948-8037 or Eleni 478-7564 and we will see to it that you have a ride! Of course our Women’s Wellness group and Angel Babies ladies continue to enjoy this important ministry. New meeting time for Women’s Wellness is every Friday 12 noon – 1:30 pm. Angel Babies continue to meet and create the third Wednesday of each month 10:30 – 2:00 pm. Again, if you need a ride CALL. We are looking for volunteers to fill a number of commit tees and chairs. Please step up and join in the worthwhile activities . IT IS REWARDING !

God Bless

PROFIT & LOSSFESTIVAL NEWSIt is with heartfelt appreciation that I thank the following individuals for their generous donation to the Gyro Booth for Festival 2016:

Dean Poullos; Ethel Xanttopulos; Bill and Angeline Paraskevas; Nick Bokides; Ed and Becky Bennetto; and Helen Fotinos. These individuals helped to offset some of the expenses for the booth.

I would be amiss if I did not thank my two children, Garrett(George) and Nikki, for all their hard work and dedication. If it weren't for them, as well as ALL OUR Friends, this booth would not be as successful as it is

MEET OUR NEW PARISHIONER -- RICK & KAROL LYN FOGLE

STUDIES IN FAITH

We were visited by a certified Garden Gnome. Buck is a certified master in mulching. The group, enjoying the delicious goodies every Thursday at Studies in Faith. Skyping with Helen, who cannot come in, but contributies. All are welcome.

Rick and Karol Lin Fogle retired this year and moved from Southern California to Lodi, California to be closer to his parents. Many people have been asking me, “Who are the new people?”—here’s their story:

Rick and I met in 1975, after high school. I was attending an evangelical church at the time; he a Baptist church. Once engaged, we married and attended First Christian Church for eight years. By that time, we had three sons; Joshua, Timothy, and Matthew. Unhappy at our church because of the changing times, we felt the pull of our roots in the Lutheran Church where services were still liturgical. After visiting a Lutheran Church, and an Episcopal Church, we went to help our friends at an inner city church in Santa Ana, California.

In 1990, many Christian Churches were undergoing a change, a drifting away from anything liturgical. “Praise teams” started becoming a part of worship services, with very little worship taking place during the service. For cradle Orthodox Christians I know this is something very foreign. To this, Rick and I say, Thank God! Truly thank God -- this beautiful church, its sacraments, saints, feasts and liturgies have remained intact throughout history.

God knew that we were searching for the fullness of the faith and while we searched here, God began to reveal His church to one of Rick’s friends who was doing post-graduate work in Theological Studies and studying Patristics at Notre Dame. There, Dave was blessed to begin a dialogue with a Greek Orthodox priest. Soon after this though, Dave and his wife had to leave college life and returned to California needing real jobs, as they were expecting their first child. He continued his search of Orthodoxy by visiting several local parishes in the Southern California area. An Antiochian mission church in Costa Mesa, California, had a video called “Welcome Home -- The Journey Towards Orthodoxy”. It told of the journey of a handful of men who worked for Campus Crusade for Christ, (a para-church organization focusing on college campus’ reaching college kids for Christ), who had found the Orthodox Church through study of scripture and church history, and who now were Orthodox priests. Several of those priests were part of the collective who researched, translated, and produced the Orthodox Study Bible Watching the video with tears in our eyes, seeing the beauty of the Orthodox Church, we knew we had finally found our home. It is the fullness of the faith, the faith of our forefathers, patriarchs, apostles, and teachers.

It was 26 years ago this past Lent on Lazarus Saturday, we were Chrismated, and became part of the Antiochian Eastern Orthodox Church. It was a glorious time and the culmination of years of searching for the fullness of the faith. We were now part of the ancient church, the church universal.

Karol Lyn Fogle
