You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We continue our focus on the theme for our 43rd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress by studying the content of the voice of Christ. As we are sent by Him to be the light of the world, to be His voice, it is essential that we know His voice; and we are able to offer the Gospel in a changing world. In the first article, we affirmed that we know the voice of Christ as we live in His presence and are connected to Him in faith. We hear His voice offering truth, guidance, and assurance; and we to respond by following His will. We hear His voice as our Lord sends us into the world to speak to others about what we see and experience in Christ. With this understanding of how we know and share the voice of Christ, it is important to examine all that we offer as His voice in this changing world. First, the message we share as the voice of Christ is one of hope. In the Gospel we see hope in His ministry and words. Through the truth and healing Jesus offered, hope was renewed in the lives of many. His presence engenders hope in our lives; and in a world that is challenged by constant change, where many are struggling to find meaning and purpose, we offer hope as His voice. Second, the voice of Christ is the voice of truth. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6) His words offer divine wisdom and reveal the will of God. His voice illuminates truth in a world where many are searching or are misguided by false ideologies. Our faithful witness of the Gospel of truth ensures that His voice is heard. Through our worship of God, through our ministry of compassion, and through our lives of holiness, we speak the truth as revealed to us by Christ, guiding others to find purpose and fulfillment in Him. Third, the voice of Christ is filled with grace. Our calling to share the love of God as revealed by Christ is affirmed by the Apostle Paul as the highest calling we have: But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may accomplish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the Gospel of the grace of God. (Acts 20:24) Christ came and revealed God’s great love for us. His teaching and healing were filled with grace. His voice through us calls all to come and receive forgiveness and be saved by grace. Fourth, in truth and grace the voice of Christ through us reveals divine power. It is a voice that is bold and strong. We speak with assurance in the promises of God. As we see in the Holy Scriptures, His voice brings healing, removes spiritual blindness, and calls us back from the path of sin into abundant life. The voice of Christ through us speaks clearly and powerfully in the face of adversity, persecution, and even the threat of death, offering a witness of truth and faith.

“You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World”

As the Father has sent me, so I send you (John 20:21). You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We continue our focus on the theme for our 43rd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress by studying the content of the voice of Christ.

2 THE BASILIAN + AUGUST 2016

“You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World” continuedFifth, the voice of Christ is the voice of life. He said, I am the resurrection and the life. (John 11:25) He also said: I came so that they (i.e. the people) may have life and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10) In Christ we find abundant and eternal life. We are sent by Him to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14) and to speak His voice, offering life to all.

Sixth, the voice of Christ is an invitation. He says to us and through us as His voice, Come, follow me. (Matthew 19:21) As the Bridegroom preparing the banquet of eternal life and communion with God, He directs us to go out and extend this great invitation to all: Go out into the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. (Luke 14:23) As His voice our words and our lives must be an invitation to come and see all the great and marvelous things our Lord has done and to experience grace and life in Him.

Finally, our voice becomes the voice of Christ. Through our faith in Him, from our experience of His presence and power, through lives that are being transformed by grace and truth, we offer the voice of Christ. It is His voice that becomes our voice because we live in Him. We speak for Him not only because of the message He gives us, but because of the real experience of our lives and the focus of our faith — because of our challenges, joys, struggles and victories as we make this journey of faith and follow the ways of the Lord. We speak from our spiritual knowledge and our life experiences. As we live each day in the presence of Christ, as we hear His voice guiding us in love, as we follow His will and see His power in and through us, we know that we are the voice of Christ.

PRESIDENT’S CORNERIt has been a busy summer for our parish youth, and youth programs! In June, young adults from our parish joined other parish groups from the Bay Area to build homes for Project Mexico. Through this Orthodox ministry, started in 1988, our young people have a spiritually and culturally enriching experience and an opportunity to give to people they have never met, and to receive so much more than they give.

Many thanks to our AHEPA Chapter 212 for your support for the boys’ dorm renovation project at St. Nicholas Ranch. On July 10, our Ahepans sponsored the St. Basil Community Picnic, held under the pavilion tent on our beautiful parish grounds, to benefit this project. The weather was perfect, warm with a bit of a breeze. Kudos to the cooks for the excellent tri-tip, hamburgers, and hot dogs. Youth and young adults throughout the Metropolis who participate in the many activities at the Ranch appreciate your good work and successful fundraising for this project.

Closer to home, it’s also been a busy time at our preschool! The remodel project is scheduled for completion the first week of August, and a week later, the 2016-17 school year gets underway. Tammy and her teachers are looking forward to a larger classroom for the 3-year-old class, as well as the new bathrooms. The children are looking forward an exciting year of learning, friendships, and adventures. This important ministry for our parish is in its twenty-second year of offering a loving and nurturing environment for little ones to learn and grow.

Funeral services for Bessie (Vasiliki) Papas were held Thursday, July 21, at St. Basil’s, followed by burial at Stockton Rural Cemetery. Bessie passed away peacefully July 11, at the age of 91. She was born February 25, 1925, in a village near Delphi in Greece to Kathrine and John Panagos. She moved to Tracy in 1955, with her late husband, Sam Papas. The couple were married in the old St. Basil’s on April 1956. A long-time member of St. Basil’s, she enjoyed cooking and baking Greek delicacies. Bessie enjoyed traveling and working in her garden. She retired from Heinz, where she worked for 30 years. Bessie was preceded in death by sibling Helen Krekos, Themeo Panagos, and Voula Theoderatos. She is survived by her two children, Goldie and Sam Papas, both of Tracy, as well as many nieces and nephews.

May her memory be eternal.!

Thanks to the effort of Mary Carroll, we learned that Fry’s Funeral Home provides free services to families who are experiencing the loss of an un-born child or neonate. The staff at the funeral home were very excited to learn about our min-istry and accepted our gesture to donate burial garments for their families. Fry’s informed us that they provide services to at least one family per week in San Joaquin County who have experienced a fetal demise. We immediately packaged 12 burial gowns, including hand-crocheted blanket, diaper and hat and delivered them to P.L. Fry and Son’s Funeral Home starting in June 2016. We want to extend our gratitude to all the parishio-ners and preschool families who continue to donate their wedding gowns for us to repurpose and offer to a bereaved family.

PHILOPTOCHOSDear Philoptochos Sisters and St. Basil Community,

I thought about all of you fondly while I was participating in the National Philoptochos Conference held at the Clergy-Laity Convention in Nashville. It resonated with me just how tirelessly all of you serve our Church and our St. Basil community. The women at the National Convention inspired me by their dedication, their conviction, and their hands-on labors in the Lord. The magnitude of the hands-on service and fundraising efforts of all the chapters is overwhelming to comprehend. An assessment was compiled of all the Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Chapters in our Archdiocese. The assessment totaled funds raised and donated to local, metropolis and national charities covering a 10 year period, 2005 to 2010. According to Maria Logus, National Philoptochos President, 50% of the chapters submitted their total donations. The amount raised and donated for this 10 years period, submitted by 50% of the chapters totaled $48,000.000! During this same 10 year period, St. Basil Philoptochos raised and donated nearly $500.000! The Philoptochos Delegates were asked to volunteer an hour of our time during the convention. Together, we packed 26,000+ meals to be given to the homeless in Nashville and Greece. Each meal we packaged made a Lentil soup, including 1 cup of Lentils, 1/2 cup Rice, 1 Tbs. of dried veggies and 1 tsp. pink Himalayan Salt. I was impressed by the healthy contents of the mail. Philoptochos is living the Holy Orthodox Faith -- truly a shining example of faith in action! The National Philoptochos Board and the work of the National Philoptochos Office is amazing! Yes, it was quite an eye-opening and heart awakening experience to represent our chapter at the National Philoptochos Convention and Clergy-Laity! Thank you for choosing me to represent our chapter.

DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPEThe AHEPA Family’s Western Regional District Convention (WRDC) was held at the Doubletree Hotel in Anaheim from June 23- 25 and included members from Districts 17, 20, and 22 -- as well as our own District 21. Delegates from the Stockton AHEPA Family who traveled there were: Tom Chiarchianis, Garrett Buck, Kathy Leles, PJ Rishard and JoAnne Panagopoulos. What made it extra special was that two of our Sons of Pericles Matthew Maroud and Vasili Karapanos were able to attend, and they were the hit of the convention activities along with stealing the hearts of all the women! It was wonderful seeing them interact and learn more about this worthwhile organization and what our youth do for those near and far.

Speaking of our youth, four young students from our community were granted academic scholarships from the AHEPA Family at the Scholarship Luncheon. Nikki Karapanos received the Past District Governor’s League Award/Scholarship; Maria Leles received the Daughters of Penelope District 21 Re-Entry Scholarship; Vasiliki Koutsoulis received the Daughters of Penelope District 21 Scholarship; and Vasili Karapanos received the Order of AHEPA Scholarship.

Also receiving awards were our own Past District 21 Governors, Tom Chiarchianis and Kathy Leles for their dedication to the organization and drive towards projects that the Order of AHEPA and the Daughters of Penelope promote. Tom is this year’s AHEPAN of the Year, and Kathy is this year’s Penelope of the Year. Congratulations to those who were recognized!!

Later that evening, Banquet MC Jenni Poulos (from “Flipping Out” on Bravo), welcomed all the delegates with her own version of the AHEPA Rap and entertained us all with her own style, as well as her love for our heritage and the AHEPA Family. The annual Periclean Award given out by District 20, was awarded to the famous Chris Hillman, guitarist for The Byrds, who also entertained us and donated a beautiful guitar towards the raffle. All proceeds went to the St. Nicholas Shrine in NYC.

Chris converted to Orthodoxy when he married his wife Connie more than 30 years ago. They have the kind of love for Christ, and each other that is deep and true. They are devout Greek Orthodox believers who stated, “I love the tradition. I love that it was in the history of the faith, the very first church. The apostles went out, the five patriarchs and started up the ministry.”

Chris sings in the beautiful St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church (Santa Barbara) choir. He met District 21 Governor, Beverly Kennedy, on a trip to the Holy Land, led by Fr. Jon Magoulias of Annunciation Church in Modesto. They rode camels up Mt. Sinai and learned more about his faith on that trip. He went from a rock and roll lifestyle to serving our Lord Jesus Christ. He speaks about his faith at many of his performances throughout the country and we were all thrilled to hear him sing, along with members from the Agape Trio, at the convention.

At the end of July, Kathy Leles, JoAnne Panagopoulos, and PJ Rishard plan to attend the Supreme Convention in Las Vegas at the beautiful Mirage Hotel. We can only hope it will be as fabulous as this one!
