If we are to carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth, if we are to speak a message of hope into lives filled with despair, if we are to proclaim salvation and victory over sin and death in a constantly changing world, we must know Christ. In his letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul offers us guidance in the importance of knowing Christ. He writes, Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord…That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and may share His suffering (Philippians 3:8-10). From this proclamation of faith, we can see that it is essential to know Christ in order to be His voice. We must seek Him above all things. He is the source of our life and hope. He has entered our humanity for our salvation, revealing the grace of God and showing us the way to restore our communion with our Creator. We gather in His presence, receive Him in the Holy Eucharist, and offer Him praise and adoration. His is our life, our peace, our joy, and our eternity. We must count everything else as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ. Knowing Christ and becoming His voice is the result of living all aspects of our lives in Him. In His presence and love we grow in the knowledge of our faith. We experience and become witnesses of the righteousness of God. Our lives reveal the power of His resurrection. All that we say and do becomes the voice of Christ, revealing grace, life and truth, because we know Him. This is where our knowledge of Him and our experience of Him come together so that we are able to show to the world a true image of our Savior and Redeemer. Our knowledge of Christ and the blessings of our relationship with Him lead us to proclaim with the Apostles, We cannot but speak of the things we have seen and heard (Acts 4:20). From the blessings of our knowledge of Christ, we are sent by Him to share the Gospel in a changing world. We are sent to offer a message of grace, light and salvation that is truth and life no matter what happens or how things change around us. From our knowledge of Christ we have this assurance, that we are sent in the power of His resurrection, and thus we have boldness to speak for Him in all places, under any circumstances, because we are the light of the world.

YOU ARE THE VOICE OF CHRIST IN A CHANGING WORLDAs the Father has sent me, so I send you (John 20:21). You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

With anticipation we look forward to the fellowship, worship, and ministry when we gather July 3-8 for our 43rd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Nashville, Tennessee. The theme for the Congress is “You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World.” This theme affirms our vital mission in this world, as we have been sent by Christ to proclaim the Gospel, to share truth in love, to be His voice. Our Lord said to His disciples, and He continues to say to us today, As the Father has sent me, so I send you (John 20:21). You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

As we prepare for our Clergy-Laity Congress and consider the implications of our Lord’s commission for our work throughout this Holy Archdiocese, it is important that we reflect prayerfully on this theme. In this first of a series of articles, our focus is on the importance of knowing Christ in order to be the voice of Christ.

2 THE BASILIAN + JULY 2016

In the next article we will discuss the content of the message we offer as the voice of Christ. I ask in preparation for further reflection and for our Clergy-Laity Congress that you consider our theme, your relationship with Christ, and your knowledge of Him. In the words of the Apostle Peter, I encourage you to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (II Peter 3:18).

With paternal love in Him,

†DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America

The following is Part I of Archbishop Demetrios’ series on the theme for the 43rd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress which will take place July 3-8 in Nashville, TN. The theme of the Clergy-Laity is: “You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World”. To read the entire series, please visit clergylaity.org under the “Reflections” tab.

PRESIDENT’S CORNERAs we start the second half of the year, I want to tell you about some recent changes to the council membership. As many of you know, in early May, Danielle Pappas relocated from Stockton to live near her family in Texas; we miss her and wish her well, and thank her for her good work on the council. At our June meeting Ken Jochimsen was appointed to take Danielle’s place, and was sworn in and joined the meeting. Welcome Ken, and thank you for joining us!

If you’ve parked on the south side of the parking lot recently you’ve noticed that the preschool bathroom remodel is underway. Spanos Construction started on the project just two days after the Special Assembly unanimously approved the project on June 5. Many thanks to Lindsey Economou, Preschool Board Chair, and to the board, for all their success in obtaining donations of labor and materials that brought the project cost down to $31,000—less than half of the original estimated cost. And special thanks to the preschool parents for their successful fundraising, and to the parishioner donations directed to the project. The preschool is looking forward to having up-to-date, upgraded bathroom facilities ready for children by the start of the school year.

July and August are prime vacation months for most of us, but please do remember the important festival work that needs volunteers during this time. The food prep work takes a break during July, but other planning activities are in full swing, and committee chairs are still needed for Kid Zone, Set Up activities, and the Bookstore. Please call Mike Tsarnas, or Eleni in the office, if you can help in any way. The food prep work will resume the middle of August, Please check bulletins and the July and August Basilians for dates and times. .

PHILOPOTOCHOSPhiloptochos, unlike some ministries of St, Basil, is not taking a hiatus for the summer, There are no monthly meetings, However, our good deeds will continue as we prepare for the Festival, September 9 thru 11.Food preparation dates are listed in the Basilian (Clip it out and post the days on your calendar). Also, Angel Babies Sewing Group will continue to meet the third Wednesday of each month (except September) in the Church Hall 10:30 am – 2:30 pm. Everyone is welcome -- no Sewing 101 prerequisite required. There are other tasks to be done, and the fellowship is great. Women’s Wellness, led by Patty Manuse, which has been meeting weekly each Friday will take a break until after Festival. A few of these ladies are going to continue meeting for walking each Tuesday and Thursday 8:30 am at Brookside’s Nelson Park. All are welcome (How else are you going to keep up with the summer gossip!). If interested, call Kathy Walton. If it seems we are patting ourselves on the back – We Are! National Philoptochos requested all chapters to submit donation disbursements for the past 10 years. They want to announce the grand totals at the upcoming Biennial Convention. The following report was sent to National as well as Metropolis:

ST BASIL GREEK ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH STOCKTON,PHILOPTOCHOS SOCIETY CHAPTER #4025 10 YEAR DISBURSEMENT AMOUNTS 2006 – 2016

NATIONAL $ 44,950 METROPOLIS 45,900 LOCAL 140,175 TOTAL $231,025 Many hands, hours, and efforts have gone into fundraising activities to make these donations possible. We keep Patty Manuse and daughter. Katrina, in our prayers as they travel to Nashville to represent our Chapter. Total collections for Mocha for Missions Drive, which ended June 19, were not available at press time, However, I will advise next month after all cups have been returned and counted.

I would like to thank Kathleen Galas for her time and cost to send current 2016 membership cards, along with thank you notes to all members. Our membership now totals 73. Membership is open year round, and we welcome EV ERYONE. Men of our parish may become supporting members of Philoptochos by making a financial donation of $40. We currently have seven members. It was a pleasure to surprise all the men attending Church on Fathers Day with a carnation boutonniere. Maybe some of you fellows would like to be Associate Members?? Wishing the membership a Blessed, safe, and fun-filled summer. Remember to check Festival work party dates.

With Love in ChristBobbe Xenos

Grace

The true motivation for giving is grace. Giving is an act of worship in response to the generosity of God. “You are to give,” says Saint Paul, “as God has prospered you.” His Second Letter to the Corinthians (9 & 10) teaches us clearly,

“He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”

God blesses those who give with generosity.

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco is pleased to announce the launch of its new website, http://sanfran.goarch.org/. New features include a streamlined news section, an expanded events section, categories to easily filter stories and events, and an improved search function so that information is more readily accessible and easier to find. For the first time, the Metropolis has a beautiful parish directory with exterior photos of each church in the Metropolis. Still to come is a clergy portal which will contain additional resources for our priests. The site was created with responsive web design, which means it works on all internet devices.

"This is a very exciting step for our Metropolis as we expand our online presence and make more information and resources readily available to our clergy and faithful," stated His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos. "I encourage our faithful to visit the new website and learn more about our programs and ministries, as well participate in opportunities for learning and involvement in our many ministries, educational programs, and cultural activities."

Through the efforts of the Strategic Plan, the Metropolis has expanded many of its programs and ministries which necessitated a complete overhaul of the website to accommodate this positive growth. Rev. Father Daniel Triant (Saint Demetrios, Seattle) was hired as the new Metropolis webmaster and, together with the expertise of Dr. Eve Tibbs and Steve Tibbs, the Metropolis engaged Design by Cosmic, an outside web design agency known for their creativity, innovation, and a unique ability to take a message and make it transparent through beautiful images and framework.

"Our theme during this project was 'Ancient and Modern,'" said Fr. Daniel Triant. "Ancient to show the richness and depth of the ancient faith that is Orthodox Christianity, and modern to reach people wherever they are in this day and age."

In addition the website redesign, the Metropolis has increased its social media presence with a new Facebook page, which chronicled the recent journey of Metropolitan Gerasimos through Holy Week and Pascha, and will also provide information on upcoming news and events in the Metropolis.

Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco NEWSMetropolis Of San Francisco Launches New Website

Simply defined, a strategic plan enables a parish to get from where it is today to where it wants, or needs, to be tomorrow. The plan will define the direction (strategy) and identify the resources, programs, ministries and goals necessary to achieve its mission and vision. To assist parishes in the development of their respective plans, materials have been developed as a result of our own Metropolis’ Strategic Planning process. A comprehensive guidebook, entitled, “Parish Strategic Planning - A Vision for the Future,” as well as real examples of parish strategic plans can be downloaded at http://sfstrategicplan.net/parishplanning/.

By utilizing our six-step design and implementation approach as a reference, a parish will be able to effectively solicit a variety of opinion, insights and recommendations from its congregation, build consensus and create its own, effective plan for the future.

Parish Strategic PlanningA comprehensive approach, materials and resources have been

assembled to assist a Parish as it develops its vision and plan for the future.
