ST. BASIL GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Stockton, CA THE BASILIAN SEPTEMBER 2016 Volume 30 Issue 9 FOCUS ON CHRIST Some of you may remember the movie Patch Adams. Hunter “Patch” Adams, portrayed by the late Robin Williams, is a doctor who seeks to help his patients through humor and by learning more about them other than their illnesses. Before becoming a doctor, Patch encounters Arthur Mendelson, a grumpy elderly patient in a mental institution who happens to be a genius. Arthur goes up to Patch, holding up four fingers to him and asks Patch how many fingers he’s holding up. Naturally, Patch responds “four”, to which Arthur responds, “You’re an idiot”. Later that evening, Patch goes to Arthur’s room to find the answer. Arthur again holds up four fingers to which Patch again says, “Four”. Arthurs then responds, “No, no, no look at me. You’re focusing on the problem. If you focus on the problem you can’t see the solution. Never focus on the problem. Look at me”. When Patch looks beyond the fingers towards Arthur, his fingers blur and Patch sees eight, to which Arthur emphatically says, “Yes, yes, yes!” This scene has stuck with me over the many years since I first saw it. It left an impression on me and I always felt that it was a great analogy for our faith in Christ and in dealing with the problems and challenges in our lives. Let’s take the miracle of Peter walking on water towards Christ as an example (Matthew 14:22-33). When the Disciples are out a sea during a storm, they suddenly see Christ coming to them walking on the water. Peter then gets out of the boat despite the strong winds and begins walking on water himself as he walks towards Christ. However, Peter eventually starts to sink and cries out to Jesus saying, “Lord, save me” which our Lord does. Peter begins to sink because he takes his focus off Christ and instead focuses on the wind. In other words, Peter focused on the problem—the wind—and lost sight of the solution—Christ. I believe that everyday Jesus is telling us to look at Him, to keep our focus on Him, especially when we’re experiencing “the storms of life”. We try our best to overcome the challenges related to our marriages, children, relationships, friendships, workplace, family, Church, and financial situation, and yet so often we feel we are still “sinking” as Peter did. Like Peter, perhaps we have taken our focus off of Christ and as a result, we end up “sinking” into despair, fear and anger. How can we regain and keep our focus on Christ? When we attend the Divine Liturgy and receive Communion regularly; when go to Confession; when we treat others as Christ would want us to treat others; when we read the Scriptures and apply what we read to our lives; when we learn about our faith through the various ministries of St. Basil’s--these are all ways that keep us focused on Christ. As we begin a new Ecclesiastical (Church) year this month, I thought it would be good to have as our theme “Focus on Christ”. In the coming months of the Basilian, I would like to look at how we can focus on Christ in our marriages and families; as parents, co-workers and parishioners; with our finances, friends and possibly even politics. The goal is to see how in different facets of our life we can stay focused on Christ and keep from “sinking” into despair, fear and anger. We must always remember that the Lord calls out to each and every one of us saying “Look at Me. Look at Me and keep your focus on Me.” If we feel like we’re “sinking”, He will reach out and grab our hand and rescue us. With love in Christ, Fr. Pete

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Well, it’s September again and the festival is around the corner. We’re used to that as the main topic of conversation in the parish this time of year. But I was surprised last week when someone called the church office to ask, “When is your festival? I just saw the tent up at the church.” It made me realize that many people around town look forward to our annual weekend -- now 57 years and counting -- of food, entertainment, dancing, and hospitality as much as we look forward to welcoming and introducing the community to our church and our Orthodox faith.

Another eagerly-awaited event for our metropolis, and our parish, is coming on September 22. On that day the metropolis will celebrate the Thyranioxia (Opening of the Doors) of the Alex and Faye Spanos Faith and Heritage Center at Saint Nicholas Ranch, and will honor the Spanos family as major benefactors of the Center. The beautiful worship center will graciously welcome guests arriving at our metropolis camp, meeting and retreat grounds and pilgrims to the Monastery of the Holy Theotokos the Life Giving Spring.

And finally, save the date: the fall 2016 General Assembly will be held on Sunday November 13 following liturgy; a light lunch will be served. These assemblies are important opportunities for all of us to participate in the governance of the parish and its many ministries. I hope all will attend.

ST. BASIL PRESCHOOL We are so happy to be starting a new school year! The staff has been working long hours cleaning, washing, and preparing each classroom for their new students! Although this is a BIG undertaking, it is always exciting to start the new school year fresh. Thanks to Mike Ciconne for making everything sparkle. We are so excited to announce our new addition of rest rooms! This is a project that has been long overdue. Many thanks to our families, Rick Gaines, supporters from St. Basil Church, and Lex and Lindsey Economou. Lex and Lindsey spent many extra hours making sure everything ran smoothly. I am so thankful for you two. The project is finally a reality! We are really “On the Ball” this year, as we have already booked our two major field trips. Our first will take place at Del Osso Farms Pumpkin Patch in Lathrop. We visited last year and had a wonderful time. Our second trip will be in May. We will have our end-of-the-year picnic locally at Pixie Woods. We will enjoy the park and rides, then picnic together!.

NOTICE!!!We have availability in our two-year-old-old class and our three-year-old class. WELCOME BACK TO SUNDAY SCHOOL

September is a busy month, especially here at St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church. It marks the beginning of the year for our church, and of course, our award-winning Greek Festival. With all that in mind, I ask that after you take a breath;

September 25th is the beginning of Sunday School.

There will be registration forms in the church office and in the Hall after the Divine Liturgy ,starting after the festival. Forms can be completed after Sunday School, too. Having completed forms help us to provide necessary supplies, support, and to maintain communication regarding upcoming events.

I look forward to the coming year and want to thank the returning and new teachers in advance. If anyone has questions, suggestions or any interest in becoming involved with this ministry, please feel free to contact me; in person, by text at 209-471-7177, or email [email protected]

Faithfully,Lori Koulouris

PHILOPTOCHOSGREEK ORTHODOX LADIES PHILOPTOCHOS SOCIETY

As we begin our liturgical calendar year ,we will be celebrating 85 years of philanthropic endeavors through local (chapter), regional (Metropolis), and national (Archdiocesan) programs. These programs make a difference in the lives of others. Our St. Basil chapter has formulated the 2016/17 calendar with events and ministries to implement our philanthropic goal to provide charitable and benevolent outreach and to preserve the sanctity of the Orthodox faith and traditions (Mission Statement). The purpose of our ministries is threefold: Benevolence and fundraising with events such as the festival pastry sales, Annual Turkey Luncheon, Crab Feed, Makaronada, among others; Greater community witness through the Annual Interfaith Tea and the International Cuisine; Hands-on service with the Kids ‘n’ Cancer Quilt Ministry, Angel Babies and Haven of Peace. For our chapter and our parish, we have expanded our ministries to include a Women’s Health and Wellness Fellowship. To accomplish these charitable and philanthropic endeavors, it is going to take our entire membership working together. Please give your prayerful thoughts to the events you would like to participate in as either a worker or a leader. We need individuals to take leadership positions as coordinators or chairpersons for some of these events. There will be sign-ups at the first General Meeting of the year, which will be held September 20, 2016 at the Spaghetti Factory. Again, please be mindful and prayerful of the fact that it will take the entire membership to fulfill our mission. Our membership totals 71 ladies, some of whom are homebound. However, there are tasks that can be done from home. We have provided the dates of our various meetings. Please cut them out and post them on your calendar, refrigerator, or bulletin board as reminders to the dates, times and places of meetings. Plan to participate in as many meetings as possible. As your President, I will do my best to conduct interesting meetings, provide speakers, and engage creative discussions. There are already two presentations scheduled -- the “Squash Lady” and “Five Wishes” and Estate Planning. I know in my heart, that when we all strive to work diligently, together, we will have a fun and fruitful year.

With Love in Christ,Bobbe Xenos, President

A very nice thank you note from altar boy, Jackson Wiesner, (sonof Tom & Lindsay Wiesner) in appreciation of Philoptochos’ sponsoring of his camping trip to St. Nicholas Ranch.

Our youth are our future, and Jackson is fine example of our wonderful young folks..

FR. THEODORE PHILLIPS

It is with sadness that the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco announces the passing of Rev. Father Theodore Phillips. Father Theodore resided in San Diego where he reposed in peacefully in the early morning hours on August 23, 2016.

“I extend my sincere sympathy on the passing of our beloved Father Theodore. He was a priest that demonstrated the highest of values during his ministry, and was also striving to set a good example of Christian love to all those around him,” stated His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco. “It was just five months ago that Father Theodore grieved the passing of his devoted Presvytera Mary, and now they are reunited in the Lord’s heavenly kingdom, reaping the reward of eternal life.”

Father Theodore was the first parish priest at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cardiff, CA where he faithfully served from 1978 – 2006. Prior to that, he served at Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in San Diego, California from 1965 – 1978. He began his ministry in December 1953 at Saint Basil Greek Orthodox Church in Stockton, California, where he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood.

Father Theodore will be remembered for his warm smile, melodious voice, his care and compassion, and the genuine way in which he touched the lives of his parishioners during his over 50 years of distinguished service as a priest. He was especially committed to the development of youth programs, which led to his involvement as a founder of what has become the largest youth ministry program in our Archdiocese – the Folk Dance and Choral Festival. During those early years, Father Theodore was a champion of this program and it brought him great joy to see it flourish so abundantly for the past 40 years.

Father Theodore was born in Gary, Indiana on June 23, 1929, where he lived until he was three years old. His family then moved to Greece where he remained until he was 15. Following the completion of high school in Sacramento, California, he enrolled in Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he received his Master of Divinity degree. Father Theodore would later continue his education by earning a Master of Arts in Clinical Pastoral Counseling from National University.

In addition to his numerous responsibilities as a parish priest, Father Theodore served the civic community as Chaplain for the State Hospital. He also served on numerous boards including the Guadalupe Home for Boys, St. John’s Home for Boys, and the Trinity School for Children. Father Theodore was also a member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and the Doctor-Clergy Association at Sharp Hospital in San Diego.

Father Theodore was married to Presvytera Mary for 62 years until her passing on March 6, 2016. They were blessed with two children, Erys and Demetre, and with one cherished grandson, Erik.

The Trisagion Service will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. at on Sunday, August 28. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m., with Divine Liturgy immediately preceding at 8:30 a.m. All services will be held at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California. The Makaria will be held immediately following the funeral. At the request of the family, the interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donation be made to: Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church for the Father Theodore Phillips Scholarship Fund, 3459 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA 92007.

May his memory be eternal!

FAMILY & COMMUNITY NEWS

CondolencesIn May we lost Betty Kokonas Stevens, wife of the late Edmond (Ed) Kokonas and mother of Tim Stevens. Born in Nebraska in 1923, Betty came to Stockton with her mother in the 1940's. She met Ed while working at the ice cream

parlor (now the Sunshine Café) at the corner of Monte Diablo and Yosemite near Victory School. The couple began a life of entrepreneurship and hard work in downtown Stockton, laboring first in Ed's dry cleaning business (in which he was Stockton's last hatter--one who cleans and blocks hats); and then in their popular restaurant, El Gato. They were also

active in the life of St. Basil Church. In 1957, son Tim came along, bringing the blessing of parenthood to their lives. Ed was a renaissance man with many talents, but health issues resulting from his early years as a coal miner in Utah forced him into an early retirement. At this time, Betty began work in her mother's elder care home in Linden, and Betty maintained that business until she was nearly 75 years old herself. Sadly, Ed passed away in 1967. Two years later, Betty met and married Charlie Ramsower, to whom she was married until his passing in 1999. Betty passed away in May after a brief illness, having lived quietly and independently to age 92 in a small home near her beloved son, Tim, and his wife Lesta. They miss Betty but will cherish the memories and lessons learned from her life. May her memory be eternal! Tracy Sitig

My Big Fat Non-trip to GreeceTheir bags were packed, and they told everyone goodbye — "see you in September". Mary and Steve Facaros were happily at the airport (with friends) and anticipating another wonderful trip to Ikaria, Greece. Imagine their surprise when they were not allowed to board the plane!

What happened? Was there a terrorist threat? Were people being turned back for their own safety? No!! It seems Mary (who was asked by her daughter, Denise, if their passports were up-to-date) assumed they were. But --surprise, surprise — they were not. So, there was no trip to Greece, and we get to see their beautiful faces all summer. A contrite Mary advises us to make sure our passports are valid and current.

Mary reports that many of her friends scurried to check on their passports when she related her story -- Lesson Learned.

Nick Chiarchianis

Parishioner Nick Chiarchanis has moved to a new address: 3318 Brookside Road, Apt.230,Stockton, CA 95219. He will now be residing at Bayside Landing Senior Community.

He hopes to be able to maintain his current phone number. His son, Tom, will let us know once he contacts AT&T.

Please drop by to visit Nick, if you get a chance.

“Father Phillips married Carol and me. I was also an alter boy for him for about five to six years.

He was a great priest, great voice and a good person.”

DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE

The Supreme Convention in Las Vegas, NV was spectacular. Golden Gate District 21 reigned supreme! The elected Grand President and Grand Treasurer are Jan Spanos and Diane Petersen of Artemis 5 Chapter, Sacramento District 21, repectively. Kathy Leles, JoAnne Panagpopoulos, and P..J. Rishard attended as delegates. His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos presented our friend, Comedian Basile, with an award for his endeavors for Cooleys Anemia and St. Nicholas Church construction. We met the DOP Salute to Women honoree Olympic medal winner, Shannon Miller, who is the only American to rank among the Top 10 All-Time gymnasts and only female to be inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame -- twice. She is a survivor of a rare form of ovarian cancer Traditionally, Foula Vasiliogiorgis (San Francisco Diocese Office Admin and Dist 21 Lt Governor) and P. J. Rishard wear a fascinator hat and tiara, respectivey, to the Grand Banquet. This year’s surprise entertainment at the Grand Banquet was the Rat Pack. We served as thier mature Rockettes in the show.We are very proud of our District 21 accomplishments at this internation convention. There were Daughters and Ahepans from all over the Unites States, Canada, Australia and Greece..
