MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

dear alumni and friends, this summer was highlightedby the chapter of thebasilian fathers.

Chapters are held every four years to review the state of the Congregation of St. Basil, tomake plans for the future and to elect new leadership.

This year’s Chapter held in Rochester, New York, considered the realities of our existencein 2006. We are faced with a large number of aged and aging priests who need anddeserve good care and meaningful ministry. We also looked at the fact that in the past fewyears we have had to reduce the number of our commitments and that we will continueto have to do so in the future.

However the picture is not only about getting smaller and older. We were encouraged bythe important work that is being done in our remaining parishes, high schools and univer-sities in North America. We were excited by the success of Basilian led programs inMexico and Colombia especially at Asuncion high school in Cali. We see hope in theyoung men in formation for the priesthood in all of these places.

In short the Basilians continue to be committed to our mission and ministry and St.Michael’s is a central part of this commitment.

This year we will have four additional Basilians on staff at the school. Fr. John MaloC.S.B. ’66 will be Dean of Students overseeing the “discipline” part of our motto! Mr.Glen McDonald C.S.B. and Mr. Andrew Leung C.S.B., Basilian scholastics, will be teach-ing part-time this coming year as will Basilian Associate Mr. Michael Powers.

One other development worth noting is that I was elected to the General Council of theBasilian Fathers. I will serve with Fr. Ken Decker C.S.B., Superior General, Fr. GordonJudd C.S.B., Vicar-General and First Councilor, Fr. Tom Rosica C.S.B., Second Councilorand Fr. Paul English C.S.B., Third Councilor in overseeing the governance of the BasilianFathers for the next four years. I will continue to be CEO at St. Michael’s though myduties for the Congregation may take me away from the school from time to time.

As always the future is both exciting and challenging. At St. Michael’s we face the futurewith confidence in God’s loving care and in need of your continued prayers and support.

Fr. Joe Redican, C.S.B.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

the old verities remainforever constant

As I write the first editorial for the “new” Blue Banner many ideas come to mind as tothe direction and the tone the paper should take. Reading through past issues, one themebecomes most prevalent and that is the constant maxim, the school motto: Teach meGoodness, Discipline and Knowledge. There is no getting away from it, and really it isthe cornerstone of any society and in particular that of St. Michael’s College School.Previous editorialists have written passionately and philosophically giving practical adviceas to what a St. Michael’s man is and should become. The philosopher says that we arealways in a state of becoming and the poet echoes this by telling us that a man’s reachshould exceed his grasp. I believe that a St. Michael’s man should be a voice, a witness, apresence in an ever challenging and frightening world.

As you read through the Blue Banner, you will discover some very interesting, diverse, and ever heroic stories of graduates who have given themselves and indeed their lives forcauses and events that have shaped our world. Yet, there are many others who did notmake the headlines, but who, nevertheless have served their communities, their familiesand God in so many rewarding ways. This is their story too.

I am reminded of what my predecessors have said as what the St. Michael’s credo shouldbe. Fr. Tom Mohan C.S.B. ’48, in the last edition of the Blue Banner in 1998, upholds thenobility of a St. Michael’s man to be like St. Thomas More, “a most uncommon man”who told the truth regardless of difficult personal risk and cost, and faced death ratherthen deny his principles. Fr. Daniel Zorzi C.S.B., in his Vision address of 2000, stressesthe point that to keep St. Mike’s alive we must go beyond the mortar and bricks by“informing students’ lives through good examples and sound teaching.” Fr. JosephRedican C.S.B., our newest President came right out and said it. The work of St.Michael’s is to “help transform the lives of young men by exposing them to Goodness,Discipline, and Knowledge.”

Yes, the old verities of truth, goodness and knowledge, remain forever constant and needcontinued honing. Let’s make it our mission.

BLUE BANNER ~ 2006

FROM YOUR ALUMNI PRESIDENT ~ PETER THURTON

the existing alumniexecutive came togetherunder the guidance ofDan Prendergast fiveyears ago.

First of all, it must be said that, as a group, we very much enjoy the work that we do onbehalf of all the St. Mike’s Alumni. With the assistance of those who came before us, thealumni executive has played an instrumental role assisting the school’s Advancement Officeput together an up-to-date database.

The benefits of this up-to-date database are evident by the tremendous success we have hadover the past three years at the Turkey Roll, held on the last Friday of November. Thenumbers just keep growing and growing. We have gone from approximately 350 grads in2003 to over 600 in 2005. For the 2006 Turkey Roll, Friday, November 24, 2006, we areaiming to have over 800 in attendance and for 2007 we intend to pass the 1000 mark! TheTurkey Roll is the signature event for the St. Mike’s alumni association, and the Executive isappreciative of the efforts made by all to attend. Personally, I found it very rewarding to seegrads from the 1940's to as recent as 2004 at the last gathering. At each Turkey Roll, aspecial class is recognized and a commemorative gift is presented to each member celebratingtheir 10th, 25th and 50th reunions.

In conjunction with the Turkey Roll, your Alumni Executive under the leadership of JoshuaColle ’92 and Marc Montemurro ’93, have been most successful in hosting the St. Mike’sHomecoming. Homecoming 2006 will be held on Saturday, September 23. This is a fun eventfor both Alumni and their families. It is always special to meet a growing number of gradswho are now sending their children to St. Mike’s as second and third generation students. Inaddition to volleyball, soccer, and football games, there is a beverage tent, a food tent, gamesfor kids, tours of the school, sale of St. Mike’s clothing and old yearbooks. Most importantly,it is a day to celebrate the spirit of St. Michael’s. This year, as a special feature, Homecomingwill see the launch of the 100th Anniversary of Hockey at St. Michael’s College School.

Finally, we have been busy organizing elections for the new Alumni Executive. We encourageall of you to become active members of your Alumni Association. By now you should havereceived by mail and e-mail, a letter outlining the nomination and election procedure for thenew Alumni Executive.

In closing and on behalf of the entire Alumni Executive, I would like to extend a very specialthanks to all of the grads for your support, to my Alumni colleagues, to Frs. Redican, Zorzi, and Lehman, along with Dan Prendergast, the St. Mike’s Advancement and CommunicationsOffice, and the entire staff and faculty for their continued encouragement and assistance inmaking my work as President a pleasant task.

class of ’96 ~10 years laterIt was a journey we had made many times before aswe walked down those yellow halls, past the weightroom and into the school gym. For many of us, the lasttime we had made this trek was 10 years ago, when weemerged from our graduation as St. Michael’s OldBoys.

Much has changed since then. We have grown older. Insome cases we have gained unwanted weight and someof us have lost a little hair. We are doctors, lawyers, bankers and writers. We were well represented duringPope John Paul II’s last visit to Toronto at WorldYouth Day 2002.

Though we now live throughout the world, there aremany things that will always connect us – the yellowhalls that were our home for five years, the teachersthat guided us along the way, and the double bluespirit that courses through our veins. Hoikety Choik!

class of ’86 ~On June 9, 2006 approximately 40 members of theClass of 1986 met to celebrate the 20th anniversaryof their graduation from St. Michael’s. The eveningwas a tremendous success consisting of a reception inthe school’s Campeau Lecture Hall, Mass in the chapelpresided over by Fr. C. Zinger C.S.B., tours of theschool, and most importantly an opportunity to fondlyrecall some of the highlights of life as a student at St.Michael’s. Since then, the class of 1986 has acceptedthe challenge to raise $25,000 to provide a financialbursary to a needy student.

class of ’81 ~At the 2005 Turkey Roll the class of 1981 celebratedits 25th year reunion. Approximately 40 grads were inattendance for the special occasion. The word on thefloor was, “guys, we can’t wait another 25 yearsbefore we gather again.” It was great seeing oldteachers like Frs. Hibberd C.S.B. ’58 and ZingerC.S.B., Mr. cricket and soccer, Evans Tannis and othergreat staff members, some young and others showingtheir age. There were plenty of stories being told intothe wee hours of the evening.

class of ’56 ~Some were recognizable; others you had to guess at.They came in all shapes and sizes-some with canes, others rather mobile. Talk of hip replacements, cataracts, by-passes, prostrates, grandchildren, anddeceased classmates took up part of the evening’sconversation as some 35 classmates attended their50th graduation year at the Annual Turkey Roll,2005. It was a great night filled with stories longforgotten, of skipped classes, first Friday Masses andbreakfast (coke and a cigarette) at The Cottage whereFr. Timmins C.S.B. ’33 with cassock on, had to comeand get us for class, student council elections when wegot two days off and you couldn’t see the yellow bricksfor all the posters. Yes, memory lane it was. Thanksfor coming out-keep in touch and stay well.

after 30 yearsstill going strongIt’s amazing as I continue to search out Alumni newsfrom all corners of the globe, how much I am learningof grads who still meet and tell their stories, true andfabricated, (memory has a way of doing that). Thefollowing is a news report by Joe Crysdale a.k.a. TedSchmidt ’57, sent to the Blue Banner by way of TomO’Brien ’57, another questionable source. “It’s a lovestory, pure and simple…” as only Ted can tell it.

They hobbled into the exclusive Balmy Beach Club onSaturday, May 6, 2006, grizzled veterans of the Darwinjungles of St. Michael’s College School in the 1950’s.Several were still smarting from having been kicked inthe slats by Basilian scholastics during study hall.

They were the former shadows of themselves bruisingNHL players: Tom Polanic ’62 with his cane, PatHannigan ’57 fresh from his dialysis treatment atMacMaster Medical Facility, Billy Mulhall ’57 still outof wind from his R & B gig at the Queensway, FrankieBurns ’57, the old Hank Williams devotee, recentlyretired high school teacher (from that other school onAvenue Road) reeking of formaldehyde. Glaring fromhis first absence in thirty years was the (thinning) red-head, John McCusker ’57 one of the founding fathersof this embarrassing event, recovering from the additionof a new knee while holed up in his Ottawa bunker.

As usual, there were many highlights at the annual tripdown memory lane. One was the appearance of longlost brother, Joe Walsh ’57, former treasurer of theStudent Council, who, as rumour has it, had gonemissing with Pat Fremeau ’57, Vice President, at thetime, and together opened up a Taco Bell in Burlingtonwith proceeds from a sock-hop. Discovered on the 9thhole in Guelph by Walsh was basketball player, writer, and community supporter, Ken Hills ’56 StudentCouncil Secretary.

As well, cheers erupted when former Kirkland Lakerefugee, Howard Moran ’55, wheeled in from GeorgianBay with Bill Colvin ’54, the gifted former SMC andQueen’s University hockey star from Huntsville.

who would have guessed otherwise?Footnote: I asked McCusker to give some background as tothe origins of the Annual Balmy Beach Fib Fest. However,John’s memory was slipping so I turned to Ted himself. Tedrelates that it all began on the rooftop of the Park Plazain 1979 where he, Paul Egan and John McCusker first metto hatch their adventures. In time, they were joined by thelikes of Frank Burns, Pat Fremeau, Terry Divine and HarryFlood. Only Paul Egan and Ted Schmidt have enjoyed aperfect attendance record. John missed this year in lieu ofa knee replacement, so he says. Priorities, John. The eventhas been growing strong for 30 years and now embracesall grads with stories to tell.

From the files of Peter Fillman,SMC hockey archivist.

Last year it was Murray Costello ’53. This year it willbe Dick Duff ’55 who will be inducted into the HockeyHall of Fame in November 2006 making him the 13thSt. Michael’s player to reach this lofty goal.

Already enshrined in the Hall are alumni: FrankRankin, Reg Noble ’16, Joe Primeau ’28, Ted Lindsay’44, Red Kelly ’47, Tim Horton ’49, Frank Mahovlich’57, Gerry Cheevers ’60, Dave Keon ’60, Fr. DavidBauer C.S.B. ’45 and Bobby Bauer ’33.

A native of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Dick Duff cameto St. Mike’s in the early 50’s. Who would have thoughtthis diminutive youngster would go on to play 18 yearsin the National Hockey League. He played for theBuzzers and the Majors from 1952 through 1955before jumping to the Toronto Maple Leafs in thelatter part of 1955 season. He never looked back!

Dick played nine seasons with the Leafs before beingtraded to the New York Rangers towards the end ofthe 1964 season. With the Leafs, Duff won two StanleyCups. After a brief stint with the Rangers, he wastraded to the Montreal Canadians where he playedfor the better part of six seasons and won four moreStanley Cups. Dick had brief stints with the LosAngeles Kings and the Buffalo Sabres before retiringin 1972.

During his 18 years in the NHL, Dick Duff played1030 regular season games and 114 playoff games, garnering 651 points. He also appeared in seven AllStar games.

Dick was not the only Duff at St. Mike’s in the 50’s.His brother Les Duff ’54 played with Dick on twoMajors’ teams and went on to a distinguished careerin the America Hockey League.

Dick Duff, always a gentleman, has been a loyalsupporter of St. Michael’s participating in many eventsover the years. He is often seen around the school talk-ing to both staff and students and can be frequentlyfound in the Alumni Office talking to Dan Prendergast.

If the weather is good, he can be spotted on the golfcourse with some of his many friends. In 2000, he wasinducted into the Order of St. Michael.

Congratulations Dick Duff on your induction to theHockey Hall of Fame. You make us all proud!

what a small worldIt seems no matter where you go, you are sure to runinto a St. Mike’s grad. The following two stories provethis point. I ran into Tony Cella ’78 at the school’s successful Skate for Kids Benefit and coincidentlyencountered Mike Norton ’78 at Chesswood Arena inMarch, 2006.

Tony Cella ’78, President and Owner of VeniceConstruction writes... “It is always great to return tothe St. Mike’s campus as I recently did for the annualSkate for Kids benefit in April 2006. St. Mike’s providedme with a great experience, education and foundationfor success. Many of my business dealings are withSt. Michael’s alumni. I left the school in 1978 andwent to play in Sault Ste. Marie for the Soo Grey-hounds. I roomed with Rick Tocchet ’81 and playedalongside Ron Francis and Jeff Beukeboom. I attendedSt. Francis Xavier, great education, great people andgraduated with a major in Economics. I coached theSt. Michael’s Jr. B team in 1989-90 along with ScottMcLellan ’80 and we won the Provincial Jr. Champion-ship. That team featured Eric Lindros, Ken Klee ’89and Wes McCauley ’88. Currently, I am coaching theSt. Mike’s Jr. Buzzers Spring Team with Paddy Graham’79. I see there are many former students teaching atthe school and one of my favourite teachers, stillactively involved, is Fr. Zinger, C.S.B.”

Mike Norton ’78, writes, “I was introduced to St.Michael’s by my best friend, Billy Carroll ’78. He andI grew up together in West Rouge. It was Billy whowas kind enough to convince Mike Draper ’57, thehead coach of the Buzzers, to watch me play. To thisday I am forever grateful to Billy for affording me sucha wonderful opportunity. One thing led to another andsoon my mom and I were out shopping for dress clothes.

WHAT A SMALL WORLD ~ CONTINUED

I was obviously not accustomed to wearing a tie inpublic school.

I entered St. Michael’s in September of 1976 as a 12thgrader. It was a real transition for me academically, athletically and socially. I was lost those first fewmonths since everyone seemed to know one anotherfrom grade 9. I was fortunate though to have anotherfriend, Wayne McDonald ’78, from West Rouge whoshowed me the ropes.

I immersed myself in the many opportunities St.Michael’s had to offer: cross country, hockey andtrack. It was through athletics that I met many finecoaches and friends that I fondly recall. Those valuablelessons I learned in and out of the classroom at St.Mike’s are ones I try to instill in my own family andcoaching career.

After graduation in 1978, I played Division I hockeyat St. Louis University and the next year I transferredto Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I graduatedwith a Bachelor of Science degree in education andwas asked to stay on to be a Graduate Assistant in thePhysical Education Department. This provided me theopportunity to earn a Master’s Degree in Education, while at the same time coaching the Miami UniversityHockey Team.

After six years at Miami, I moved to Cleveland, Ohiowhere I managed a Recreation Complex in the suburbof Shaker Hills. In 1993, I took a job at CulverAcademy, a co-educational college, located 45 milessouth of Notre Dame, Indiana. As Assistant AthleticDirector, I have been coaching boy’s hockey and forthe past two years I have coached the girl’s hockeyteam which brings me to this tournament in Toronto.

I have been married to Ann for 22 years and we havea daughter Kelly, 17 and son, Rob 12.

Thanks Joe for giving me the opportunity to tell mystory and relate how much that first meeting withBilly Carroll and St. Mike’s has changed my world.”

former teacher,dr. michael higgins, appointed president and vice chancellorof st. thomas university

Many of you would have purchased your firstdictionary if you sat in the presence of the goodDr. Michael W. Higgins, at St. Mike’s from 1974-82.

Dr. Higgins is leaving St. Jerome’s to assume newduties as President and Vice-Chancellor of St. ThomasUniversity in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on July 1,2006. We wish him well.

A colleague, and former student of Michael’s, isDr. Dave Seljak ’77, now Associate Professor in theDepartment of Religious Studies, St. Jerome’sUniversity, and Head of the Department of ReligiousStudies at the University of Waterloo. Coincidentally,Dr. Steve Bednarski, who recently taught at St.Michael’s College School, has been appointed AssistantProfessor of History at St. Jerome’s.

It is indeed a small world.

It has been brought to our attention that over theyears a number of SMC grads have distinguishedthemselves in the field of literary arts. We list someof their accomplishments here.

Barry Callaghan ’55, Barrelhouse Kings, A Memoir isjust that, a brilliantly written recount about two writ-ers, a father and son. Barry writes with great eleganceand wit about the joys and travails of growing up in aliterary family with his father, Morley, one of Canada’sbest loved authors. Barrelhouse Kings begins in theCallaghan home and ends with Morley’s death andtakes the reader through a world in which Barry grewup: his mother, brother, grandparents, his neighbour-hood, his school and the town itself. Barry, now some-what retired, taught contemporary literature at YorkUniversity. His writing has been published around theworld and translated in seven languages. He is thepublisher of Exile and Exile Editions. His son, Michael’83, himself an accomplished artist, has done manyillustrations for Barry’s prolific works. Barry recentlygave a reading in Rome and was last seen in Paris ata new book launch. His latest book is Raise You Ten:Essays and Encounters 1964-2004, Vol. Two.

Ken Hills ’56, Sherwood Park takes place in NorthYork, Ontario. It is a story of childhood, of a Catholicfamily growing up in the forties, their social andeconomic plight that centers on the unpredictableevents of two young boys. It is a time of horse drawnmilk and bread wagons, road hockey games, 10 centTom Mix and Hopolong Cassidy matinees, skippingschool to play ball in the park. It is a story of “twosolitudes”, a French Canadian Catholic mother and aconverted Englishman. Ken is a retired teacher current-ly living in Guelph with his wife Louise. He spends histime pursuing his hobbies: golf, gardening, being agrandfather to five children, and writing a senior’scolumn for the Guelph Mercury.

Ted Schmidt ’57, author of Shabbes Goy: A CatholicBoyhood. Andy Barrie of CBC Metro Morning, says“is one of the best books you’ll ever read on Toronto. If you think multiculturalism is new, think again.”

Shabbes Goy was the Gentile who was asked byOrthodox Jews to turn on the lights, and light the

stove on the Sabbath. All such work was forbiddenon the Holy Day. Ted Schmidt was a Shabbes Goyon Toronto’s Palmerston Blvd. in the 1940’s.

Ted Mahovlich ’87, is the author of the best sellerThe Big M; The Frank Mahovlich Story, an insightfulportrayal of a hockey legend, father and mentor. Hislatest book, Triple Crown, Biography of MarcelDionne sheds a new light on why Dionne has becomea model player for the modern hockey era. It, likeall of Ted’s work, is told with insight, passion andadmiration. Ted and his wife, Margaret, both teachers, live in Toronto with their son Otis.

Danny Prendergast ’89, The Tree Doctor, is just that,a guide to tree care and maintenance and much more. After leaving St. Mike’s, Dan went on to obtain anAssociate Diploma in Agriculture from the Universityof Guelph and a Certificate in Urban Arboriculturefrom Humber College. He is a certified member of theInternational Society of Arboriculture and is nowemployed as a professional arborist with the town ofMarkham. Dan’s sister, Erin, who holds a Master’sdegree in publishing assisted him in the publication. The book has received great reviews in Canada andthe U.S.

Mark Moore ’95, recently wrote Saving the Game; ProHockey’s Quest to Raise its Game from Crisis to NewHeights. Mark and his brothers Dominic ’99 andSteve ’97, all Harvard graduates, are no strangers tohockey. Steve, playing for the Colorado Avalanche, incurred a serious injury in March, 2004. A similarincident had happened to Mark in December 2002.The book is his perspective after a career in hockey. It,according to Roy MacGregor of The Globe and Mail,is written not “to grind an axe, but to bring somethingnecessary back to a sport that had sadly lost its edge.”Dominic now plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins havingrecently been traded from the New York Rangers.

Fr. Wallace Platt, C.S.B. ’42, A Dictionary of BasilianBiography contains 632 biographical entries on themembers of the Congregation of St. Basil, who diedbetween the years 1822, when the congregation wasfounded, and 2002. Grazia Murdoch-Riolo, A Student Who Never StoppedLearning is a moving story told by the mother ofMatthew Murdoch ’97, a St. Michael’s student, who,at the age of 16, was struck by a car leaving himseverely brain-injured. Refusing the advice ofMatthew’s doctors and other medical specialists toput her son in an institution, Grazia set out on ajourney of faith, hope and healing. Now, ten yearslater, Matthew, with the unyielding faith of his mother, has begun to recreate himself. Retired St. Michael’steacher, Dan Nicholson says, “Grazia and Matthew’sstory provided inspiration and hope to all who arefaced with life’s physical challenges. I am in awe ofher strength and courage to do whatever is best toimprove Matthew’s quality of life.” (Available at theschool Mporium).

sometimes we don’t hearabout the good things

Isn’t it true though that bad news travels fast? Well, hereis some good news sent to Len Chittle, Dan Blaik andPaul Forbes, three outstanding teachers and coaches ofthe St. Michael’s College School Senior Double BluesHockey Team. On March 27, 2006, the Double Blues Clubrepresented CISAA in the OFSAA finals in Rainy River. Theletter is written by Fr. Gilles Quesnel, pastor of St. Mary’sParish in Fort Francis where the tournament was held.

Dear St. Michael’s College School,

You can read this on the P.A. if you like. So here wewere 5 p.m. Saturday, just about ready to start Mass atSt. Mary’s Parish in Fort Francis. As usual, the churchwas only half full, and I suspect it was because theOFSAA hockey tournament was being played in town.

Well, what happened next was nothing short ofinspirational. Your hockey team came in along withanother team (of which I apologize, I can’t remembertheir name). I don’t remember the church being that

full except for Christmas Mass. It was a great thing tosee. It gave the whole Mass a great sense of celebrationand true community. I just think it’s a wonderful thingfor your team to take time out of its hockey scheduleand make the effort to celebrate Mass. I think we canall take a page out of your book and realize that what-ever you are doing in whatever town you might be in,there is always time to go to church. I think that a lotof hockey parents in our community can learn fromthis as it always seems they are taking their kids outof school and church to play in tournaments.

It goes to show that there is more to life than what wedo during the day. I rarely write on such issues, butthought you would like to know how much it wasappreciated to see you there so far away from home.

God bless.

Gilles

1906 ~ the beginningFather Henry Carr had two purposes in mind when hefounded St. Michael’s College School’s first organizedhockey team. First, he was convinced that hockey, andathletics in general, “helped appreciable to form boysinto men.” More importantly, he saw competitive sportas an avenue to help St. Michael’s gain acceptance as amainstream academic institution in Toronto.

1910 ~ making wavesOne of Father Carr’s earliest triumphs played asignificant role in developing hockey’s popularity.

Using overage players from St. Michael’s junior teams,he entered a team into the Senior O.H.A. whichquickly won two consecutive provincial titles. Theytopped it off in 1910 by capturing the Allan Cup, thenawarded to the amateur hockey champions of Canada.Their success sparked a wave of interest in hockey inToronto, which led to the creation of several seniorteams and, ultimately, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1920s/30s ~ a rich traditionAs St. Michael’s teams continued to excel on the ice,the fledgling National Hockey League began to noticethe talented players emerging from the school. St.Mike’s NHL tradition blossomed in the era with

Editor’s Note: The Double Blues lost in the final game but came home with the Silver Medal and great memories of a life longexperience. In the last four years, the team has won two Silver and one Gold. Congratulations to the coaches andplayers. You never know who is watching and it is nice to hear good news.

Hall-of-Famers, Joe Primeau ’27 & Bobby Bauer ’33,while Larry Aurie ’22, Pep Kelly ’33 and many othersmade their mark in the league. Junior hockey wit-nessed an amazing feat in 1934, when the Toronto St.Michael’s Majors won their first Memorial Cup andthe Junior “B” Buzzers emerged to capture the O.H.AProvincial Championship. It would not be the last timethe two teams would be crowned champions in thesame year.

1940s ~ golden yearsIn 1945, the Majors accomplished something that noO.H.A. team was able to do for the previous eightyears: stop the Oshawa Generals from capturing theleague title. If was the beginning of a three-year run forSt. Michael’s that saw them win two Memorial Cups(1945 & 1947), and barely miss out on a third.

The era gave rise to some of hockey’s golden stars.Red Kelly ’47, Ted Lindsay ’45, and Tim Horton ’49began their road to the Hall of Fame at St. Michael’sduring the forties. Other NHLers included Les Costello’47, Eddie Sandford ’47, Fleming Mackell ’47, GusMortson ’47 and many more.

Interestingly enough, one of St. Michael’s greatestplayers from this era did not go on to an NHL career.A young man by the name of David Bauer optedinstead to join the Basilian Order, and follow one ofSt. Michael’s most noble callings- the priesthood.

M.L.G MatineesMaple Leaf Gardens was the place to be in Torontoon Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Throughout theforties and fifties, the pros made way for the energyand enthusiasm of junior hockey. Doubleheaders, featuring the Majors and the Toronto Marlboroughs, would often draw over 10,000 fans to Conn Smythe’sshrine. The Majors withdrew from Major Junior in1961, and junior hockey at Maple Leaf Gardenscame to an ends in 1989 when the Marlies movedto Hamilton.

1950s ~ the flying fifties1950 saw St. Michael’s College School move to itspresent location at St. Clair and Bathurst. Fortunately, the school remembered to bring their great hockeytradition with them.

Sparked by the leadership of Basilians like Fr. TedFlanagan C.S.B. ’32, hockey continued to flourish atSt. Michael’s. Frank Mahovlich ’57, Dave Keon ’60.Dick Duff ’55, Lou Angotti ’58 and Ed Chadwick ’53are but a handful of St. Mike’s Alumni who went onto play in the NHL during this decade. The fifties alsogave rise to one of the great families in hockey history. In 1953, Bill Dineen ’53 became the first of his familyto suit up in the NHL. Over the next forty years,Gary ’62, Gord and Kevin Dineen ’81 wouldfollow the family tradition of playing for St. Michael’sand making it to the NHL.

1960-96 ~ final triumphsIn 1961, hockey at St. Mike’s was riding high. TheMajors had just won their forth Memorial Cup; morethan any other team at the time. The Buzzers hadfollowed up with another O.H.A. Junior “B” crown. The new St. Michael’s Arena promised to fulfill thevision of “hockey for every boy at St. Michael’s.”

However, education always has been and always willbe the focus at St. Michael’s College School.

It had become painfully apparent to Father Bauer thatthe goals of Major Junior hockey at the time were nolonger compatible with the educational needs of hisstudents. Within weeks of St. Michael’s Memorial Cupwin, Fr. Bauer C.S.B. ’45, decided that the Majorsshould withdraw from the league. Major Junior hockeywould be absent from St. Michael’s for the next 36years.

The Buzzers, along with other teams, continued tocarry the St. Michael’s banner into competition forthe next three decades. They also continued to sendplayers to the NHL, WHA, Major Junior and theNCAA. To date, over 170 players have gone on to the

NHL ranks. More importantly, all have had the benefitthat teaches the values of “goodness, discipline andknowledge.”

1997 ~hockey at st. michael’s todayIncluding the Majors and the Jr. A. Buzzers, St.Michael’s College School continues to operate fivecompetitive teams.

St. Michael’s has three school teams that play competi-tively with other schools in the Conference ofIndependent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA).The Senior Double Blues team is the most competitive. They play most of the top high school hockey teams inthe province and currently are considered to be one ofthe best in Ontario. The Junior Double Blues team alsoplays in the CISAA and is a perennial favorite to winthe championship each year. St. Michael’s also has anUnder-14 Double Blues team that consists of grades7-8 players. This team is typically filled with verytalented student-athletes who have just arrived atSt. Michael’s and are strong favorites each season.

As well, St. Michael’s College School operates a Seniorand Junior house league for students who are interest-ed in playing recreational hockey. Ten teams in eachleague have provided some great fun for the students.

2006-07 ~ the celebrationThe success of the St. Michael’s College School hockeyprogram is unprecedented. For the last 100 years, theschool has graduated over 170 players to the NHL –a number unmatched by any other school in the world.Several championships have been won at the MajorJunior, Junior A, MTHL, high school and elementaryschool levels.

In the academic year 2006-07, St. Michael’s willcelebrate its 100th anniversary of hockey and will hostseveral events throughout the year to honour the playersand coaches who have been involved in the program.

On September 23rd, 2006, St. Michael’s Homecomingwill be the kick-off event for the 100th anniversaryand several notable NHL alumni will be attendance.

A gala dinner will be held on Saturday February 24th,2007 at the Liberty Grand in Toronto.

Other events planned for the year include participationin CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada and St. Michael’sAlumni games.

Lastly, St. Michael’s recently released a limited editionprint by Toronto artist Les Tait highlighting hockeythrough the ages at St. Michael’s. SOCCER AT ITS BEST ~ A KICK OUT OF THE PAST

how the ballet on grass helped theitalian’s ‘arrive’ in toronto

To some folks in this part of the world, it will always be just 22 guys in fancy hairdos runningaround a vast patch of grass, hardly ever scoring.

To people like Pal Di Iulio, soccer is more even than the beautiful game. It’s a way to track theevolution of a life, a community, a city.

Long before the term “soccer moms” was invented, or stodgy old Toronto had become polyglothome to a flag-waving fiesta of World Cup fever, Palmacchio Di Iulio had fallen in love withsoccer. And anyone wanting a little history of the game’s development locally over the last halfcentury could do worse than chat a spell with the longtime executive director of VillaCharities Inc.

Di Iulio was born in 1949 in the Molise region of Italy and immigrated to Canada with hisparents when he was 7. As often happens, things didn’t go smoothly at once in the new world. In1960, ready to abandon the experiment, Di Iulio’s father sent mother and child back to Italy, planning to join them a few months later.

While the son was in Italy, he became smitten with Juventus and the “ballet on grass.” The luckof the father, meanwhile, had taken a turn for the good. A new job had been found, a housebought. The family was sent for.

“Back in Canada, hockey was expensive, football for jocks, tennis and golf belonged to anupper-class elite that didn’t live at Bloor and Dufferin,” Di Iulio recalls.

By both that process of elimination and his own inclination, his game was soccer. It became hislove, and soon enough, his labour.

His first job at 13 was selling soft drinks at Varsity Stadium. After the intermission, he’d sit in theseats (there were always lots empty), watching teams like Toronto City and Toronto Italia, andrelax and dream. During those days, he even saw the great English player Sir Stanley Matthews.

When it was time for high school, a scholarship was won to St. Michael’s College School. In thosedays, when entire childhoods were passed in a few city blocks, Di Iulio had to ask the nuns whotaught him first where St. Mike’s was, then where Bathurst and St. Clair was.

soccer at its best ~ a kick out of the pastThe following article, reprinted with permission by Jim Coyle appeared in the Toronto Star, June 20. 2006. Itfeatures St. Michael’s grad, Pal Di Iulio ’69 and reflects part of our cultural history.

Pal, the father of SMC grads, Davide ’03 and Dante ’05, now watches the game from the sidelines and stillproudly wears his country’s colours. Evans Tannis, teacher, coach and father of Stephen ’87 and Robert, nowcoaches his grandchildren and on his off days can be found at the racetrack. Evans informs us that Tony Di Zio’69 the Captain of the soccer team is now an Ontario Provincial Judge and remains a close friend of Pal’s.

But get there he did. And there he found that the Basilian fathers who ran the school knew onlyhockey and football.

“By Grade 11, a dozen of us skinny Italian kids who didn’t have money for hockey or the size forfootball, convinced the Basilians to start a soccer team.”

“We acted as our own coaches, after the excitement of starting the team, choosing the colours anda nickname (the Azzurri, of course) and participating in the odd tournament.” “It took anotheryear for the school board to sanction a schoolboy soccer league, he said, and we thought we hadhit the big time that year.”

“We had a team that was composed of 12 Italians, two Croats, one Indian from Goa via England, and our coach, Evans Tannis, from Trinidad.”

One of Di Iulio’s joys, years later, would be to see his own sons play for and captain theSt. Michael’s team that he had a hand in starting.

Over the years, his soccer fandom continued. As a Canadian immigration officer, Di Iulio wouldmeet players like Pele and Chinaglia, Maradona and many other stars.

Then came that fabled day in July 1982, when he could not believe the radio reports that tensof thousands of Azzurri fans had poured onto St. Clair W. in Toronto to celebrate Italy’sWorld Cup win.

“I could picture 1,000 people, I could picture 5,000, but they were saying 100,000 people,” herecalled yesterday.

So his mother-in-law dressed his baby daughter in the Tricolore of Italy and he went off with heron his shoulders, walking and walking and hardly believing his eyes.

“I realized that day that the Italians in Toronto had arrived,” he says. “The Italian victory haddone more to unleash the passion, love and joy for, and about, soccer and Italy than many of theother worthwhile planned activities and programs.”

And, best of all, it was joy that was utterly spontaneous and shared with the whole city. At theColumbus Centre, where he works, a 2.5-metre-by-5-metre picture of St. Clair on that memorableday, signed by the great Paolo Rossi, still has pride of place.

As they grew, his own kids joined the great Canadian soccer boom, travelling with competitiveteams around town, across the province and overseas, on trips that were as much about cultureand heritage and community building as they were sport.

“In 1994, the Columbus Centre initiated Friendship Societies in order to turn rivals into friends,Di Iulio says.” “For example our first attempt, the Irish-Italian Friendship Society invited 200guests (100 Italian and 100 Irish) to watch Italy vs. Ireland play in Boston and feast on Chiantiand pasta, Guinness beer and potatoes.”

As much as he’s proud of his heritage, as much fun as the increasingly varied flag-waving has beenin our own little global village every World Cup, Pal Di Iulio has a dream — to have a Canadianteam in World Cup contention and every car in town flying a maple leaf.

“If not my sons, or your sons, maybe their sons, playing for Canada.”

“What a country, eh?!”

Gary Dineen ’62, first came toSt. Michael’s College School in the early60’s and played two seasons with theMajors, winning a Memorial Cup in 1961under legendary and Hockey Hall ofFamer Fr. David Bauer, C.S.B. ’45. In1964, he won another Memorial Cupwith the Toronto Marlboros. Gary playedon Canada’s 1964 and 1968 Olympic, andseveral Canadian National teams. In1968-69, he played with the MinnesotaNorth Stars before retiring two years later.

However, Gary never really retired andwas frequently drawn back into a sport heknew and loved so well.

Well I remember, as a rookie teacher in 1961, I had the intimidating task of monitoring a grade 13first period study hall in room 229. The class was a sort of resting place for the fatigued andwounded members of the St. Michael’s Majors taking refuge from a previous night’s battle inKitchener or Rex Stimer’s St. Catharine’s rink. In that class were the likes of Gary Smith, TerryClancy, Rod Seiling, Andre Champagne, Ray Dupont, Mike Walton, Tom Polanic, and Gary Dineen. As some read the sport pages or the racing forms, others slept and while the odd one actually didsome homework, I attempted to employ all that I recently learned at the Ontario College ofEducation to motivate them. Really, nothing worked, but I do remember with some fondness thatfirst period class. I learned a lot about patience, collegiality and friendship.

If you have a friendworth loving.

Love him.Yes, and let him know

That you love him,Ere life’s evening

Tinges his browWith sunset glow.

Why should good wordsNever be said

Of a friendTill he is dead.
