FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK – ALISON REES

Saturday October 26th was such a special day for our school. Despite the wind, hail and rain, Templestowe Valley PS celebrated its 50th Anniversary in style. There were rides, games, market stalls, special performances, food, food and more food options, market stalls, demonstrations and support from all the Victorian Emergency Services, . . . and the list went on. There were just too many things to choose from and it was fantastic to see so many members of our community – past, present and future – out and enjoying everything on offer.

None of this would have been possible without the initiative, efforts and enthusiasm of an extremely hard working group of people. The idea of a carnival was first discussed in February of this year. Since that time, this group of amazing women has been working tirelessly to bring all the “pieces of the puzzle” together. They sought out and gained significant sponsorship to fund many of the events/activities. They appealed to community groups and businesses to donate to the Carnival Raffle and Silent Auction. They organised market and food stalls from both within and outside of the school community. They were across every aspect of the Carnival and it was only a huge success because of their work.

Congratulations and thank you must go to the Carnival Committee members: Jenny Wales, Chrissie Edwards, Eva Wong, Kathryn Taylor and Melinda Minuzzo.

I hope that all the community will find time over the next few weeks to thank these ladies for all the work.

YOU WERE AMAZING ~ STUPENDOUS ~ AWESOME ~ FABULOUS!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I know that a lot of people worked incredibly hard to make our Carnival a success and it would be lovely to thank you all individually, but it’s really not possible. We had past and present staff members, parents, students and community members all pitching in across the week leading up to Carnival, as well as those who supported the Carnival Committee members in the weeks and months leading up to Saturday’s celebrations. We had more than 120 volunteers helping on the day, as well as a significant number of people who worked behind the scenes leading up to the big event.

Thank you to all the teachers, ILAs, parents and students who worked to make the TVPS stands a success:

Prep & Yr 1 – Cake Stall

Yr 2 – Scholastic Book Stall

Yr 3 & 4 – Devonshire Tea

Yr 5 – Lolly Land

Yr 6 – Chocolate Toss & Spinning Wheel

Badge Making & Colouring In

Hair, Face and Nail Painting

Fairy Floss & Popcorn

Sausage Sizzle

Gingerbread Decorations

Cheese Toasties & Pizza Slices

Rides – Ticket Sales

Magnet Me

The support for the Carnival was amazing. The problem with naming specific people to thank, is that you’re bound to miss someone out. My apologies if I do – no offence is intended. However, I do have to do a couple of special “Thank You’s” to make:

Julienne Kretschmer – Thank you for designing all of the “branding”, advertising material and information flyers for our Carnival. Your designs really lifted our marketing and added a level of professionalism that made them stand out.

Ross Johnston – Thank you for photographing all of our Anniversary events and for all the support that you have offered behind the scenes for the Historical Display, Wine & Cheese Night and Carnival. You were always there with a smile and question, “What else needs doing?”

Anita Allen - A huge “THANK YOU” for your commitment, creativity and initiative in visioning and creating the “Skip Down Memory Lane” display. Hours of work has gone into the tracking and chronicling of the 50 years of TVPS history; particularly with some of it missing/lost in the last lot of building renovations. Thanks also to Sam Smith who ably and enthusiastically supported Anita by doing much of the photo and document preparation.

Office Team – Audrey Lynikas, Margaret Carolen, Anita Allen and Marika Smith – Thank you for the hours of additional work that you have done both before and after all of the Anniversary events. You work quietly behind the scene dealing with all of the logistics - financial and managerial – and always with a smile. Nothing is too much trouble and you always make things happen.

Rob Cretney – our TVPS “Energiser Bunny”!! He was everywhere and doing everything that was needed. (He hit 38,000 steps on Carnival day alone!) We wouldn’t have managed without him. Thank you Rob.

PAST EDUCATORS’ TOUR & VISIT

Monday October 28th was a real “trip down memory lane” for the people below. Starting with the historical display, this group of past TVPS educators then headed off for a tour of the school. For some of them, much had changed with regards to the buildings and facilities, but children’s smiles and enthusiasm never do. It was wonderful to hear of them sharing stories with our students of “how things used to be”, and for our students to be sharing their learning and thoughts with our visitors. Some of our visitors have even volunteered to come back and share more of TVPS history at a later date.

Throughout the visit there was a lot of laughter and reminiscing; with the sharing of stories and memories of past colleagues and peers. It was a fantastic event and really emphasised the deep connections that people – teachers, staff, parents and students – have made, and continue to make with Templestowe Valley PS.

Special thanks to Trish Renfree and Anne Ellenby for organising this event. It wouldn’t have happened without your enthusiasm and commitment.

That’s now the last of our 50th Anniversary events. We have one more special presentation to make to our current students, teachers and staff, and governing groups, but we’re waiting until swimming has finished and we have an assembly with everyone present before doing it.

Once our commemorative path and Anniversary Garden is developed, we will also have a ceremony to bury our Time Capsules. This might not happen until early 2020 though.

Again – thank you to everyone who has made our 50th Anniversary celebrations such a wonderful success.

SPONSORS

As you know we have a number of businesses, families and individuals who generously donated items or sponsored aspects of our 50th Anniversary Carnival. We can’t thank them enough for their generosity and support. Our major sponsors are:

ALIKI K PAINTING WINNER

The TVPS Silent Auction for the Aliki painting has now closed.

Thank you to all of you who supported this fundraiser and bid on the painting.

The winning bid of $1800.00 was made today at 3:41pm on Wednesday. Congratulations to Vicki KOTSIFAKIS in making the winning bid. We are going to miss the painting from the foyer, but know that you’ll love having it in your home.

PAVE YOUR WAY INTO TVPS HISTORY

It’s time to act on your enthusiasm to be included in the commemorative paving project - Pave Your Way into TVPS History.

The deadline has been extended for you to submit your paver design, information and payment. You now have until November 11th to get the form and payment into school Our goal – our hope - is to have 300 families – past and present – joining in on this commemorative path. We’ve just reached 200 so were hoping to connect with some of our past families who were involved with our school over the past 50 years. The flyer is below with the order form being available on Compass and also our school website. Here’s the link. Please forward it to any families that might be interested in supporting this initiative. http://www.tempvalprimary.vic.edu.au/tvps2/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/19_Sept-9_TVPS_Paver_Order-Form_Final.pdf

FROM THE SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Hello Everyone,

What a tremendous success our 50th Anniversary Carnival was! Thank you to the committee for their hard work and to the school community for attending.

The last School Council meeting was held on 21st October with lots to discuss. We are pleased to see enrolments coming in for 2020 and would like to see greater numbers coming in to our school.

The Parent Contribution fee for 2020 has been reviewed and amended to reflect your concerns and the children’s needs. Book bags will no longer be distributed as all students supply needs will be kept at the school and distributed as needed. This will alleviate excess stock that we accumulate every year and is also in line with our approach to a more sustainable school reducing unnecessary waste. Parent Contribution fees will also reflect the needs of student year

levels and will vary as such. As usual, there will be a number of voluntary contributions. A new contribution is for supporting the ongoing employment of a specific First Aid Officer. We hope you support this new initiative.

On a final note, School Councillors are deeply concerned about the traffic congestion and the lack of care from some members of our school community in relation to our children’s safety at drop off and in particular pick-up times. We are still awaiting feedback from Manningham Council regarding proposals to address traffic flows and in the meantime, we urge everyone to obey road rules and keep an eye out for children crossing roads.

Best wishes,

Christine Gouramanis

Congratulations Rachel White On Thursday October 24th, Rachel competed in the School Sport Victoria Track & Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. She competed in both the 1500m & 800m races. The conditions on the track were very tough for all the competitors. It was a very hot! But despite the conditions, Rachel came 2nd in the 1500m race with an equal personal best time of 5.05, and 3rd in the 800m (time of 2.32). Congratulations Rachel. We’re really proud of you.
