SCHOOL NEWS Principal’s Message

Welcome back to the 2018 school year. We have had a fabulous start which was very smooth due to the wonderful preparation of both staff and parents. Thank you. The children have settled well and class routines are being estab-lished. I warmly welcome all new staff members.

Welcome to all the new families who are joining our great school. At this stage, we have 341 students with 221 fami-lies and 14 classes. Our classes organisation is: 2 x Kindergarten, 2x Pre-Primary, Year 1,Year 1 / 2,Year 2, Year 2/3, Year 3,Year 3 / 4,Year 4, Year 5,Year 5 /6 and Year 6. I want to reassure parents that the class organisation is com-pleted keeping in mind the needs of the students, recommended class sizes, input from teachers and parent re-

quests. It is a thorough and complex process which focusses on students needs and the ’balance’ of each class. A ’split’/’multi-age’ class has two or more year levels in it. Teaching staff are well practised in managing diverse needs of students in the class.

Teachers will be advising you in the next few weeks when the class parent meetings will be held.

2018 Swimming Carnival

Wednesday 21st February 12-2:30pm

All Years 4-6 students are urged to practice as much as possible in the lead up to this year’s swimming carnival. The carnival in-cludes traditional distance swimming events for those students who would like to nominate plus an array of swimming ‘games’ for all levels to participate in and have fun. Some students will be in swim clubs, others will have a pool at home to practice in, while

others will make visits to Melville Aquatic to re-acquaint them-selves with the different swim-ming strokes. The carnival will be held at Riverton Leisureplex,

12pm-2:30pm. If you are able to assist in any way, please contact Mrs Naber, our Physical Education teacher or Mr Trimble. More details will be forwarded home shortly.

Virtue of the Fortnight– Unity

Student Services 2018

Student Services team will operate on Tuesdays. Our School Psychologist, Mrs Annette Goldschlager is allocated to Brentwood Primary school on this day. The Student Services team works closely with staff, students, families and outside agencies to assist all students to access the curriculum. This year Brentwood Primary School sees the initiation of the “COLLABORATIVE SPEECH PATHOLGY PROJECT” in partnership with Fremantle Speech Pathology and Curtin University. Kindergarten and Pre-Primary families would have received an information letter, questionnaire and per-mission form. Can you please ensure these are completed and returned to the office as soon as possible. If you have not received a letter, please contact the office or the class teacher. Parent information sessions will be con-ducted for Kinderaten students in Week 3.

back. I would also like to

thank the parents and

staff, who have made me

feel so welcome thus far.

Last year, I taught at

Highgate Primary School,

where I had a Year 3 class and 4 class. This year, I am very

pleased to have my own class, in Room 13. A lot of students

ask me what my favourite subject is, which is a hard question

to answer, as I enjoy the diversity of learning areas that this

position involves. However, I do have an affinity towards

Mathematics, especially since it is taught so very differently

from when I was at school; with children being able to learn

through various forms of educational play. I am also a very

active person, and I will take any opportunity to play any

game or sport. I am very much looking forward to seeing

what my time at Brentwood has in store for me, and if you

are yet to do so, please feel free to stop by Room 13 and say

hello.

Student Jewellery

Excessive jewellery is not to be worn at school; this includes bangles, dangling earrings or any item of that nature. This is in line with the School’s Dress Code policy. Items of jewellery that students are allowed to wear are small sleepers, stud earrings and any jewellery that needs to be worn for cultural or religious reasons.

These texts will be arriving at school soon. Teachers are busily gathering student information so as to ensure each child is allocated a level that

best suits their achievement in Mathematics.

2018 Year 6 Camp

Excitement is beginning to rise in the lead-up to this year’s Year 6 student camp. The camp will be held from Monday 26th February till Wednesday

28th at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp in Whitfords .

Beach’ Themed Disco’s - Thursday 22nd February.

To support the Year 6 students and camp, two disco’s have been ar-ranged for the afternoon and early evening of Thursday 22nd February. $5 Entry fees per student – to be paid at the door. The theme is beach/summer, so dress-up in your ‘boardies’ and rashi and have some fun.

The Kindy to Year 2 disco will be held from 4:30pm to 5:30pm and

Years 3 to 6 disco will be held from 5:45 to 7:15pm. $5 per entry at the door. Drinks ($1.00) and nibbles (50c) will be available for sale.

Chaplain’s News

Dear Beautiful Brentwood School Community, I am sorry to say that I have moved on to a be chaplain at differ-ent school. I have absolutely loved being chaplain to the Brentwood school community and leave with many wonderful mem-ories. Thank you for the amazing support I have always had from parents and staff and especially for allowing me to journey alongside your children and yourselves through the tough times and the joyous moments too. Bless each and every one of you and may 2018 bring health and lasting joy. Renee Shapcott

Library News

Welcome back Brentwood families! I hope you had a relaxing break and managed to catch up on your TBR pile (that's 'to be read' pile!). Library hours will be the following for 2018:

Wednesday & Thursday 9-3.30

Friday 9.30-1.30

Parents and carers are welcome to come past on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon to have a chat, browse the shelves and look at our resources just for families.

Just a a quick reminder of the library rules: Students will be borrowing 1 or 2 books each week, and

need to return all their books the following week. If students finish their books early they are welcome to

come in at lunchtime when I am present to change their books.

It is school policy that all students need a library bag, so please ensure your children come to school with their books safely in a bag on their library day.

Music News

A from the music room.

Welcome to 2018. I am looking forward to another exciting year ahead. This year we will once again have two choirs, Junior and Senior. Choir will begin in Week 3. Singing in a choir has many benefits including supporting social, emotional and intellectual development. Choir is voluntary and open to Year 2 & 3 students – Junior Choir and Yr4-6 students Senior Choir. All students are welcome to attend to assess if they would like to belong to the school choir, however, I will need to have a firm com-mitment by the end of February as I have to nominate numbers for upcoming choral events later in the year. It is anticipated that all IMSS students participate in choirs. SENIOR CHOIR – MONDAY – 8.30 – 9.30 commencing Monday 12th February. JUNIOR CHOIR – THURSDAY -8.30 – 9.15 commencing Thurs-day 15th February.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC SCHOOLS SERVICES( IMMS) Guitar lessons will be held on Tuesdays in the Music Room. There will be four 30 minute lesson and students will be notified of their time. Good luck to all Year 5 beginners. Violin lessons will be held on Wednesday mornings. Students will be notified of their session times. Good luck to all Year 3 begin-ners.

CirQuest Circus Classes

CirQuest Circus is starting the new year with a bang! CirQuest HQ, in North Perth, is a FringeWorld Festival venue with a huge season of four fantastic circus shows for the whole family from February 1-11. CirQuest’s hugely popular circus classes for children and adults start on Febru-ary 12, so there’s still plenty of time to book!

Classes are held on Mondays at Blue Gum Community Cen-tre

with morning sessions for children aged 18 months – 3 years at 9.00am,

children aged 3-4 years at 10.00am,

after school classes start at 3.30pm for children aged 4-7 years,

4.30pm for children in the upper primary school years.

The Importance of Calmness, Silence and Stillness in Chil-dren's Lives (including adolescents, for K-12 schools)

It is so challenging for modern parents and educators to create calmness, silence and stillness in their homes and classrooms. How-ever, this is an important and inspirational life resilience skill for children to develop. In this seminar with parenting author, educator and resilience specialist Maggie Dent, you will learn about the main causes of childhood stress, anxiety and disruptive behaviour and what you can do to prevent it. Maggie will also address the key concerns of adolescent stress. She will explore ways to calm nervous systems, homes and schools. Calmness can be learned! The seminar explores stress in today’s world and ways to reduce it – and is full of practical tips to take away. P & C NEWS

School Banking

Mondays 8.15-9am, School Library

Welcome back to School Banking for 2018. Banking is available to all students in the School Library each Monday morning from 8.15-9am. School banking is a practical and fun introduction to saving. It also benefits our school, via commissions paid to the P&C. If you would like your child to participate, we will hold two Account Opening mornings this term. A Commonwealth Bank representa-tive will be out-front of the Kindy/Pre-Primary block at the following times:

Tuesday the 20th of February from 8.30-9.30am, Wednesday the 21st of February from 8.30-9.30am

A parent or guardian will need to bring along their drivers’ licence and their child’s birth certificate. Youthsaver accounts can also be opened online at commbank.com.au/schoolbanking (click on the link to open a Youthsaver account) or at any Commonwealth Bank. The nearest branch is at Garden City Booragoon, in the Gateways building (near Medicare).

New School Banking Rewards

Exciting new Term 1 rewards are now available - The Twister Handball and The Secret Scratch Pad. Each student re-ceives a token when they deposit at school banking, and 10 tokens can be redeemed for a prize.

Message P&C President

Welcome to the new year at Brentwood Primary School. In particular, I'd like to offer a special welcome to all our new families, both stu-dents and parents. I'm sure you will come to enjoy the fantastic community spirit that our school has to offer.

As always, there will be plenty of fun to be had at our P&C events over the course of this year, starting with the Welcome Back Picnic on Friday 9th of March, 4pm - 7pm on the school oval. Bring your own picnic dinner and we will put on the waterslides for the kids! Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details.

For those of you that haven't done so already, I'd encourage you to join our Facebook Group - search for "Brentwood Primary School P&C". We have 168 members currently, all parents are welcome to join to share P&C related information and to keep updated with what's going on around the school.

Our first P&C Meeting for the year will be the Annual General Meeting, to be held at 7pm Tuesday 20th of February, in the school staff room. All are welcome, the more the merrier! During this meeting we'll elect our new office bearers and welcome new members. It costs just $1 to become a financial member of the P&C, so come along, get involved and have a say!
