Well what a year – COVID 19, a worldwide pandemic has had massive impact on us all and we have all had to adapt and be flexible amidst much of the unknowns! I am so very thankful to all the staff
(teaching and non-teaching) who have kept a positive outlook and always put your children’s best interests
at the forefront of their planning and decision making throughout the year, when we too, were navigating in
unchartered territory. We have needed to wash our hands and be extremely hygiene conscious, we now
know what PPE means and we now know what social distancing means and can estimate 1.5 metres pretty
accurately. Wow we have nearly made it!
I trust you and your families have a restful and peaceful holiday break however you are spending it. Keep
safe and enjoy family time. To those families that are leaving us and moving to other areas, interstate or
back overseas we wish you all the very best and trust you and your children settle in to their new settings
well in 2021. Thank you for being a part of the Wentworthville School community.

Wonderful happenings at Wenty!
Year 6 Farewell Monday December 7 saw our first Year 6 Farewell with just Year 6 and also in the new Wenty Leagues
facilities of the Blaxland Room. We were so thrilled to have it amidst COVID restrictions and the fact we could
actually have the evening and celebrate the students’ achievements was wonderful!
The students were excellently behaved and did both school and families proud! Thank you to Mrs Rafidi and
the Stage 3 team for all their hard work and behind the scenes work to ensure it was a great night!
Presentation Day assemblies! Wentworthville Public School Presentation Day Principal Speech 2020 (Stage 2)
“Well what a year – COVID 19, a worldwide pandemic has had massive impact on us all and we have all had to adapt and be flexible amidst much of the unknowns! …
We have blue tape and white paint crosses on the grounds to help families at early departure times, we have
had to operate Kinder orientation for 2021 differently than we did last year and sadly we couldn’t have our
interschool PSSA competitions run for years 3-6 and no Stage 2 camp either. All in all it has been a different
year! I thank you as family and staff and students for being able to strive and persevere even when it was
hard. Well done everyone – we should take a moment to reflect and be thankful for what we have achieved.
Even amidst COVID 19, and with our country’s borders shut, the school has still been growing and changing
in 2020 and if you follow our fortnightly newsletters you would have seen the various photo updates of the
building progress. We have needed to be resilient as spaces have changed. Play space has been changed
and the staff and students have been working with a growth mindset and have been resilient as we all think
of creative and safe spaces to use to be active but in creative ways!
Sadly amidst COVID circumstances our P&C has not been able to operate or engage in many of their positive
activities. We are hoping in 2021 for a new executive committee who can operate in COVID appropriate
conditions. I welcome you all to keep an eye out for the opportunities to be involved in the school and in P&C.
Historically as a school, we benefit from partnership with the P&C and I look forward to building this together
into the future. The P&C Uniform team were working tirelessly through the year assisting families to access
our uniform and to Leanne, Thushy and Cathryn – I thank you.
I would like to thank the staff for a tremendous year in teaching and caring for all the children at WPS as they
have grappled with and implemented curriculum and sought learning experiences that seek to engage your
children and support them in being resilient young people who are lifelong learners –both online / at home
and then back at school! All Stage 2 were well placed on accessing the Google Classroom platform in a
week! That is impressive – well done Stage 2 team. Mr Warren was busy keeping IT operating in the school
and ensuring equity of access for students without device access.
I would particularly like to thank the executive team for their leadership and management of the school during
this year and their collegial support of their teams and myself as we have lead courageously in
unprecedented times and provided many opportunities and bright spots for our school community, even
when we felt there weren’t many at times.
Thank you to our various teachers’ aides who continue to support the students and staff in the academic and
social and behavioural learning domains both in the classroom and on the playground. They play a vital role
in our school.
The administration and support staff have also worked together well to bring about a welcoming and smooth
operation as the ‘face of our school’. Thanks to Mrs Deuis, Mrs Sargent, Mrs Khanlu, Mrs Fong and Mr Wiles.
(Continued on page 5)
This team of people are a fine example of people working
together, despite challenges for the betterment of the school.
They already made operational changes during COIVD to
collect enrolments online and this made a smooth and safe
operation for families and the admin team. Then the
Department introduced an online process of enrolment across
the State and for WPS – this became a very easy transition.
Some key highlights in 2020 include:
Many students improving their literacy skills, increasing
their borrowing of books from the library and participating
in the Premier’s Reading Challenge
Many students developing their numeracy skills and we will
continue with Numeracy Groups in 2021
Many incursions including Life Education, social and
emotional learning and mindfulness programs continued
and our 3 way goal setting continued in a different format
Participation in the Sports in Schools Australia initiative every three weeks on a Wednesday and various
sporting activities / workshops organized by Mr Hobor for our students
Our 2020 Stage 2 SRC leaders who had to operate differently amidst COVID restrictions, were led by Mr
Gilson and Ms Martelli and were fundamental in making decisions and considering key matters ensuring
student voice
Year 3 –participated in a check in assessment online
which focused on targeting improvement and this year our
Year 4 students sitting the OC test did so in the library – well
done students managing change!
Some students even participated in the Parramatta
Advertiser Weather Drawing Pilot program – the selected
works will be on their website (have a look at our newsletters
and website too!)
A bright spot in the week last week was our COVID
operating party day which had a activity session included as
part of our Sport in Schools Australia package,
Ms O’Sullivan developed some programs to support those
children who needed that extra support post at home learning
(Continued from page 4)
(Continued on page 6)
– we called it ‘Literacy Boost’ and we have invested time and funds to ensure we support the students who
found at home learning challenging. Interestingly the Government has committed significant funds in 2021 for
this type of initiative to expand across the state for literacy and numeracy initiatives and we at WPS will issue
our funds to support those students identified as in need of additional support.
Our children still need the support and encouragement of every person here to realise their true potential. We
need to have the courage to support them in their endeavours so they can be the best versions of
themselves. We look for your continuing support as we undertake the most significant task of educating your
children for the future and achieving the Department of Education’s strategic goal of having every student
known, valued and cared for in our schools ... as we know that this will ensure all students have bright futures!
On behalf of the students and the staff I wish you a happy holiday season and look forward to partnering with
you in 2021.”

Community Partnership and kindness - School bags and hampers
We are very thankful for the authentic community partnerships the school experiences. Our local Wenty
Anglican church has supported the school by providing us 10 school back packs we can use for students in
2021 who are in need and also some family hampers to distribute to families who are in need of additional
support. 2020 has been a challenging year for many families and we are thankful for this kindness and
community support. Thank you Wenty Anglican!

And of course…..more concrete!!
Year 1 2020 has definitely been an unprecedented year of learning for all students and Year 1 have been
flexible in adjusting to the many changes throughout the year. Both students and teachers have learnt
to use Google Classroom in a short period of time during
learning from home. What superstars!
Whilst COVID may have changed the way we learn for a
while; we have had many opportunities to participate in
external programs. We learnt cricket skills with Milo
Cricket Australia, developed our social and emotional
learning in the SEAL drama program and enjoyed
participating in engaging and exciting activities with Sport
in Schools Australia (SISA) sessions.
We had the opportunity to participate in a virtual excursion back to the past at Vaucluse House to learn about the daily lives of the Wentworth family and discover how household technologies have changed over time. With minimal space
this year, Year 1
continued to keep
active and develop
their fundamental movement skills through different games in grade sport,
class yoga and dance.
In science we experimented with different materials and how they can be
changed and combined to create something new.
Stage 3 have had a busy week with lots of activities to keep us building our skills. On Friday, some Year 6
students finished the Rock and Water Program and then Stage 3 students participated in a team building day
with SiSA.
The library is the 'Hub of the School'. It is a place for students tocollaborate, create, communicate, connect and engage in critical thinking.
The library is accessible to all students and has a large well developedcollection of books and resources for students and teachers to access.

What works best: 2020 updateOverview for parents and carers of primary and secondary school students
NSW public schools are committed to ensuring that how we teach your child is based on what we know makes the biggest difference to their learning.
In March this year, the NSW Department of Education released an update of some of the most significant research into effective teaching. This report is called ‘What works best: 2020 update’ and outlines eight evidence-based practices that teachers can use in their classrooms to support improved student learning. It is likely that the ‘What works best: 2020 update’ will inform the teaching and learning in your child’s school.
Below is a summary of the eight ‘What works best’ practices for effective teaching, including some conversation tips to help you support these practices at home. We suggest that you use just one set of questions at a time with your child.
You can find the ‘What works best: 2020 update’ publication, together with other evidence-based resources for schools, at education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/educational-data/what-works-best-2020-update
1. High expectations
Students learn best when teachers have high expectations. Having high expectations means that teachers work hard to gain students’ interest, encourage them to learn new things, provide help when they need it, are clear and consistent about how they want students to behave and learn, and vary the way they teach to meet students’ needs.
2. Explicit teaching
Students learn best when teaching is explicit, especially when learning something new. Explicit teaching involves teachers clearly explaining to students why they are learning something, how it connects to what they already know, what they expect students to do, how to do it and what it looks like when they have succeeded.
3. Effective feedback
Students learn best when teachers provide them with effective feedback. Feedback that is effective is constructive, detailed and specific. It focuses on how students performed on a particular task, and is clear about where mistakes were made and what needs to happen to improve in future.
Check in with your child
For primary school students: Did you try something new today? What was it? How did you go? How do you feel when you’re learning something new?
For secondary school students: When you are asked to do something in class, how do you know what standard of work the teacher expects?
Check in with your child
For primary and secondary school students: Tell me about something you learnt today. Did you find it easy to learn, or did you need to ask a few questions? How could you tell when you ‘got it’?
Check in with your child
For primary and secondary school students: When you’re learning something new, how do you know if you’re on the right track? How do you know what you can do to improve next time?
NSW Department of Education
education.nsw.gov.au
4. Use of data to inform practice
Students learn best when teachers use data to confirm where students are up to in their learning and to plan what to teach next. Data is any form of information that helps teachers to do this. Data can come from a range of places, including class quizzes, student answers to teacher questions, samples of students’ work and formal exams.
5. Assessment
Students learn best when teachers use high quality assessment. Assessment refers to the range of activities that teachers use to evaluate where students are up to in their learning. It includes formal activities such as exams and surveys, as well as more informal activities such as asking students questions and evaluating samples of their work.
6. Classroom management
Students learn best when teachers manage their classrooms well. Classroom management includes the broad range of things that teachers do to encourage a safe, positive and stimulating learning environment for their students.
7. Wellbeing
Students learn best when they have a high level of wellbeing. Student wellbeing is a broad term that includes good mental, physical and emotional health, feeling supported in learning, building healthy relationships and having a strong sense of meaning and purpose. Teachers can support students’ wellbeing by:
creating a safe environment
helping students to feel that they belong
valuing their opinions and perspectives
encouraging them to be interested in learning
helping them to manage their emotions
helping them to develop positive relationships with teachers and other students.
Check in with your child
For primary school students: How do you show your teacher what you know and what you can do?
For secondary school students: Your teacher needs to understand where you are up to in your learning, so that they know what to teach next. How do you show your teacher what you know and what you can do?
Check in with your child
For primary school students: Are there rules or expectations you need to follow in your classroom? Can you tell me a few? What happens when you work hard to follow them? What happens if you don’t follow them?
For secondary school students: Does your school have school or classroom rules or expectations? Can you name a few? What happens when students follow them? What happens if students don’t follow them?
Check in with your child
For primary and secondary school students: How do you feel about school at the moment? Are there things that you find hard or challenging? Do you know what to do or who you can speak to if you’re having a bad day or have a problem? Does someone look out for you at school?

For example …
High expectations at Aldavilla Public School
Aldavilla Public School attributes much of its success in improving outcomes for students to a focus on high expectations. The students are constantly reminded that they can be whatever they want to be. One way that high expectations are encouraged at Aldavilla Public School is through setting goals. Students are expected to be working towards learning goals that are achievable, and staff are constantly encouraging students to push themselves to reach their next goal.
The school also encourages high expectations by taking a whole-school approach. For example, every class follows exactly the same behaviour management system. Student-teacher relationships are also a priority. All teachers make an effort to get to know students and show that they care about them. This can be achieved by doing things as simple as asking what students did on the weekend, or knowing who a student’s brothers and sisters are.
For example …
Use of data to inform practice at Concord High School
The mathematics faculty at Concord High School studies their HSC data each year and uses the results to plan their teaching programs in Years 7-11. The head teacher of mathematics explains: “We have a really good look at the questions students got wrong and we try to re-program based on things that the kids have got wrong. For example, our students were struggling with ‘significant figures’ in the HSC so we’ve now brought significant figures into Year 7. That means they have six years where they can see that they can round to significant figures, and now it hasn’t been an issue.”
Sometimes the re-programming involves changing the order of topics during the year so that students have more opportunities to apply their knowledge and understanding of these concepts throughout the year. The head teacher of mathematics continues: “Our students were doing really badly with probability. We had a look at our programs and probability was something we were doing at the end of every year, so we’ve moved it around a little bit so they are seeing it earlier in some years.”
8. Collaboration
Students learn best when teachers collaborate. Collaboration involves teachers working together with other teachers and experts from outside the school to improve their teaching. Effective collaboration is likely to include teachers planning lessons and teaching programs together, observing each other’s lessons and giving feedback, and discussing and thinking about issues related to their work.

Children of all ages enjoy parental recognition. They like when their parents make a fuss over their behaviour or highlightsomething they’ve done well.
Sometimes parents will reward their children’s behaviour with a treat, money or a gi. This is okay in small doses, but parentalrecognition alone is a high enough driver of children’s behaviour most of the time.
First borns, in particular, love approval. Youngest children just love that you have noticed them! Second borns can sometimes dothings in spite of their parents, but deep down they love the recognition too, even if they don’t let on that they do.
The behaviour you focus on expands
If you want your kids to be neater then focus on their neat behaviours. “You’ve tidied your toys up before dinner. Top job!” Youdon’t have to throw a party, just let them know that you noticed and you approve of their tidiness. You may also let them knowhow it aects you. “You’ve tidied your toys up before dinner. It makes my job easier.” The behaviours that you notice andcomment on will expand.
Noticing kids’ tidiness once won’t suddenly turn messy kids into exceptionally neat ones, but do it oen enough and you’ll start toget some turn around.
You can give kids a thumbs up for all sorts of behaviours. Here’s some examples.
Being co-operative
Stubborn kids need a pat on the head when they respond on your terms not theirs.
Being brave
Nervous and anxious kids need to have their bravery pointed out to them. It’s reassuring and empowering.
Being helpful
Want helpful kids? Then you need to notice helpful behaviours.
Being tolerant
Sometimes older siblings need to be very tolerant of younger siblings. Tolerance is a very giving behaviour and should bepromoted.
Provided as a part of our school’s Parenting Ideas membership parentingideas.com.au
Being patient
Something to encourage in boys, in particular. It’s oen not their strong point.
Being persistent
Let kids know when ‘hanging in there’ pays o. The link between persistence and success is massive but persistence needs to bepromoted. It’s also the one factor of temperament that can be aected by parenting.
Being friendly
If your child struggles in social situations then recognise pro-social behaviours such as sharing, initiating contact with anotherchild or taking an interest in another person.
Don’t wait until you get perfect behaviour to give recognition, particularly for very young children. Kids have L-plates when itcomes to behaving (co-operatively, bravely, patiently) so their attempts and close approximations need to be verified by thesignificant adults in their lives – their parents.
Recognising kids’ positive behaviours is easy to do, but it’s also easy not to do. We oen get tied up with other things and forgetto show appreciation and nurture the behaviours our kids need to develop. It’s important to be aware of this. It’s the little thingssuch as giving positive recognition that have the biggest impact on kids’ development.
