The Founder of Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School, Mr. William (Bill) Nimmo, loved verse and wrote poetry.
He taught his students instructional poems he believed provided sound advice to assist them through life, such as the one below.
Every Speech Day all Year Six students repeat verse three from the poem ‘I AM TRUE TO MYSELF.’
I AM TRUE TO MYSELF by Edgar Guest
I have to live with myself, and so
I want to be fit for myself to know,
I want to be able, as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don’t want to stand, with the setting sun,
And hate myself for things I have done.
I don’t want to keep on a closet shelf
A lot of secrets about myself,
And fool myself, as I come and go,
Into thinking that nobody else will know
The kind of man I really am,
I don’t want to dress up myself as sham.
I want to go out with my head erect,
I want to deserve all men’s respect;
But here in the struggle for fame and pelf
I want to be able to like myself.
I don’t want to look at myself and know,
That I’m bluster and bluff and empty show.
I can never hide myself from me;
I see what others may never see;
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself, and so,
Whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscious-free.
ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gift,
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage,
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
“Advance Australia Fair!”
COOGEE PREP SCHOOL SONG
Lads who surely know what sport is
Boys who only know what thought is
Tiger, fox and steady tortoise
Coogees face the foe.
Some of us are clever
Most of us endeavour
Not to yearn, the while we learn
For anything that work and us would sever.
Still what e’er the day may bring us
Patted backs or trials that greet us
Here’s the song we’ll always sing as
Coogees face the foe.
Three cheers for the black, gold and blue
May our victories ever be new
But defeat only makes us shout the louder
Three cheers for the black, gold and blue!

Headmaster’s Welcome
Mr Geoffrey Davison - Coogee Prep Patron and special guest of honour. Emeritus Professor Rhonda Davison AM, Ms Dinah Ginis – CPS Board Member, Mr Brett Jowett – President of the CPS Old Boys’ Union, CPS staff, parents, ladies and gentlemen, boys, siblings and friends, welcome to Speech Day 2017. Today marks the final occasion in our school year. We are honoured once again to welcome our guest speaker Mr Geoffrey Davison, the son of a CPS Old Boy (William Dunlop Davison 1921-1928) and Patron of the School who joins us each year on this occasion, and his lovely wife Emeritus Professor Rhonda Davison, who will be presenting Infants’ awards. Today we celebrate the achievements of all Coogee Prep boys, Kindergarten to Year Six and bid farewell to our Year Six students who leave us to commence their high school journey. Speech Day is the most important event in the School’s calendar, as it gives us the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the boys’ achievements throughout the year. We also look at the enormous contribution and role the teaching and parent body (P&F) play to reach this point. It takes the involvement of many to achieve what makes this School the unique place that it is. Today is not only a time for reflection on the year, it is a time to project forward. It is a time to leverage the good will, progress and positive change, which will continue to drive a clear vision steering the School well into the future. At the heart of this vision is a student-centred, value-driven education formed around a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum. As educators, our goal is to nurture and develop boys into students who are motivated, enjoy learning, and who go on to fulfil their potential as they move into high school and beyond. It is this combination of knowledge and academic skills attained in a contemporary environment, underpinned by traditional values and an emphasis on strength of character that form the core of the education experience at Coogee Prep. Through the development of differentiated and comprehensive programs and co-curricular activities, we are able to help all students to recognise and ultimately realise their academic, sporting and personal potential. Through exposing students to the creative and practical arts, we are able to help the boys express themselves creatively, develop new skills and build confidence through group work, competition and performance. The success our boys experience in all areas can be measured not only by credible academic and sporting results, but also by excellent preparation and a huge growth in confidence even when faced with the toughest of challenges.
On behalf of the Coogee Prep Community, I extend our appreciation to The Scots College, for allowing us to use this Auditorium for Speech Day this year. I wish the Coogee Prep community a very Merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday and all the best for 2018.
Mr John T. Dicks Headmaster
Gentleman
Coogee Prep’s philosophy adopts the traditional values of hard work, self-discipline and respect for others. This ethos is encouraged in all students. The School Motto ‘Gentleman, Scholar, Sportsman’ captures the essence of the ‘all-round’ education Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School offers every student.
The current Year Six boys have grown in confidence over the past seven years and are a group of fine young men. It is their experiences at Coogee Prep that prepare them to take on the next stage of their lives with enthusiasm and determination. 2017 Year Six are indeed wonderful ambassadors for Coogee Prep, as they prepare to enter their chosen High Schools.
As an integral part of preparing the boys for high school and beyond, Year Six students take on leadership roles
within the School. We would like to congratulate the boys on performing these roles so well. They have proven
themselves to be leaders amongst their peers as well as excellent role models for the younger boys.

Coogee Prep is dedicated to promoting a high level of academic achievement. We continue to perform well in all
external testing including entrance to Secondary High Schools. It is always pleasing to receive positive feedback
from Senior School Headmasters on the readiness of Coogee Prep. Boys for the challenges of high school.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN testing was conducted for all Year Three and Year Five students in Government and Non-Government Schools nationally in May this year. The testing focuses on assessing the numeracy and literacy knowledge and skills of students.
Coogee Prep performed well above the state average in the recent NAPLAN testing. The boys should be commended on their excellent performance.

Performing Arts
The whole School enjoyed an incursion from Salaka, an African Drumming Group who performed using an array of different traditional drums and percussion instruments. Every boy had the opportunity to play a drum or djembe as well as all the staff who had to perform for the boys. Ms Gershon continued to work with the Infants’ classes in Music which included percussion, singing and playing the djembes (drums) regularly during the music lessons. Mr Jacobs worked with primary all year focusing on different ways to create percussion sounds, both reading music and freestyling.
Our annual school concert had a percussion theme this year which included both body and instrumental. The Infants’ classes each accompanied some short Classical pieces using percussion instruments. All of Infants sang and performed a song with Year 2 playing mainly tuned percussion instruments and djembes while Year 1 played untuned percussion. Kindergarten sang and performed simple actions.
Each Primary class worked collaboratively with another class, one singing and one accompanying, using body percussion. There were a great number of individual performances this year, highlighting the many talents found at Coogee Prep. The concert concluded with the whole school combining to perform a well-known song and finally watching a video which included all boys and staff performing. Thanks to Mr Jacobs for his work with the Primary classes and also for producing the video. On Mrs Black’s return, she assisted Mr Jacobs with concert and video preparations. Next year, Coogee Prep will participate in the IPSHA Performing Arts Festival, held at Sydney Town Hall. All primary boys make up the School Choir and will be performing on stage.
Peer Support 2017 saw the introduction of a new peer-led, skills based, experiential learning program at CPS. This program focused on providing the students with a supportive learning environment in which to develop the skills, understandings, attitudes and strategies to improve their mental, social and emotional wellbeing. Our first module was 'Stronger Together' an Anti-Bullying program that was taught by our Year 6 Peer Leaders to boys from K-5. This program was taught once a week throughout Term 2 and into Term 3. The Year 6 leaders were challenged on a weekly basis to consider how they would teach the concepts to the multi-age groups. The leaders learned some valuable skills about communicating effectively to a small group of students and being organised for these weekly lessons. They then had feedback lessons to discuss their successes and failures and where they could improve for the next lesson. We look forward to implementing more programs in the coming years based on resilience, optimism and relationships.

Student Representative Council
The SRC has seen an exciting year of initiatives, fundraisers and lots of healthy discussions regarding CPS and the wider community. Term One saw the Mobile Muster Campaign in full force. This campaign used old mobile telephone devices and attachments to recycle and the funds were used to support the survival of Chimpanzee habitats in Tanzania. CPS came 2nd in the State for the amount of recycling raised. Well done to everyone for participating! Term Two saw the introduction of our Peer Support program 'Stronger Together' and the SRC worked together with the Peer Support Leaders to discuss its implementation and success. Term Three we joined forces with the P & F and the Silver Cent Fundraiser. This was a great initiative to help raise funds for CPS and the competition was strong across all grades with proceeds going towards purchasing more technology for 2018. To finish the year, the SRC have spoken at length about helping those in less fortunate situations and we joined forces with the Sydney Basket Brigade to donate non-perishable goods to be packed in hampers which will be handed out at Christmas time.

Sport
Sport continues to be an integral part of life at Coogee Prep. It promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, communication, acceptance and inclusion. Our inclusive approach to sport gives each boy the opportunity to participate and develop his skills. All coaches witnessed the boys develop during the year and look forward to further growth in their nominated sport in 2018. We thank and congratulate all our coaches for the commitment they showed to their teams and parents who transported their sons to sport every Saturday and supported them at games and carnivals.
We would like to thank Mr Andrew Travers and Mr Campbell Foss for their efficient co-ordination of the Sports Program this year. The 2017 Sports Program highlighted the sporting prowess and skills of many Coogee Prep boys on the field, in the pool and on the track. We also thank the team at ‘Transform - Us’ for running our School PE program again this year.
Coogee Prep students were involved in a variety of sporting events throughout the year including Inter-School
and CPS competitions. The following pages highlight and acknowledge the boys’ sporting achievements in

Saturday Sport – Summer At Coogee Prep every boy is encouraged to develop physically and socially through teamwork. Sport promotes a sense of well-being and encourages each boy to strive towards his personal best. During Saturday Sport and PE lessons we aim to teach students to respect their opponents, accept the referee’s decision and understand the importance of being part of a team.
Coogee Prep Primary boys had a successful Term One and Term Four Summer Sport Series. We congratulate the teams and coaches on their achievements this year.

Co Curricular 2017
The Co-curricular program focuses on Sport, ICT and Music for students in Years Four – Six. In supporting the schools motto and academic curriculum, the co-curricular activities provide a platform on which students grow into healthy, capable and confident young men. The range of programs provide students a pathway to develop their talent and skills in a safe, informative and friendly environment. The activities are directed towards character development and unique learning opportunities for valuable life lessons and universal values, teamwork, self-discipline and hard work. This also helps the transition into high school allowing the boys to widen their view on school activities.
Activities in 2017 Included:
Sailing - Tackers course. Learning to have fun on the water, Tricks, Techniques and learning to race. (Years 5 and 6 only) Golf - Learning the fundamentals, Driving, Putting, Chipping and game play. Mr Matthew O’Connor (Year Four Teacher), who brings enthusiasm, guidance and support to his classroom, where he instills a love of learning and a desire to strive for greatness.
Mr Carlos Bartelme (Year Five Teacher) for his methodical and structured approach within the classroom to promote independence, self-direction and an attitude of hard work in his students and for the leadership and direction of our ICT program.
Mr Andrew Travers (Year Six Teacher, Sport and Head of Innovation) for his all-encompassing skills and passion, preparing Year 6 for high school and beyond, along with his innovative sports and staff initiatives.
Mr Stephen Dicks (Indonesian Teacher and Senior Learning Support) continues to open up the boys minds to the history, language and culture on Indonesia and fosters in the boys an appreciation for cultures other than our own, along with the learning support work in Maths and English for Primary boys who needs extra assistance.
Miss Nicole Thrasy (Full time Infants’ Learning Support) has capably and effectively facilitated the infants learning support program predominantly in the area of Literacy with a major focus on our Pre, Mini, Multi and MaQ Lit Programs. She has had a significant impact on student Literacy learning and skill development throughout this year. She has been ably assisted in this area by Mrs Reney Psihoyos
Mrs Stephanie Stelter has not only been working in Learning Support and Library, she has had a day a week with Kindergarten focusing on the formal structures of Literacy. Her major role in the Library has seen many fascinating and informative literary initiatives, including research and book studies.
Mr Ryan Gowland (Head of Pastoral Care and Student/Staff Welfare) has been moved off class to focus on his new role. I congratulate him for the leadership he has displayed in promoting pastoral care and welfare throughout the school and initiating programs such as peer support and circle time school-wide. He is an excellent role model for our students and a strong leader within the school.
Once again, I acknowledge Ms Kerry Gershon, with the utmost respect and admiration for what she does and brings to the Coogee Prep family on a daily basis. Her exceptional leadership as Deputy Head embraces the support and pastoral care of both staff and students alike, this along with her meticulous attention to administrative detail ensures life at Coogee Prep runs as smoothly as possible. I thank her for her continued loyalty, commitment and support, not only to the School but to me.

Mrs Tessa Morris, in the School Office is the administrative heart-beat of our building, monitoring the comings and goings, keeping the data base and roll books up to date and those endless lines of communication open. As registrar of the School, she coordinates school tours and admissions, ensuring the smooth transition of new families into our School. She ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the School at every level, in particular, by keeping me on track and making sure I attend to the important tasks of the day.
Mrs Annette Black began this year carrying out various administrative roles to assist Mrs Morris in the office. As the Semester progressed in a Teachers Aid capacity, she worked alongside Miss Thrasy in the areas of Mini and Multi Lit for Infants and coordinated the Infants’ magic words. After returning from maternity leave she consolidated the infant’s magic words.
I would like to congratulate our Performing Arts team of Ms Kerry Gershon, Mrs Annette Black and Mr Jay Jacobs. Ms Gershon coordinates the infants’ component and individual performers for our school concert, whilst Mrs Black and Mr Jacobs facilitate the primary performances and the annual school music video. This year at our School concert we were able to once again showcase both individual and collective performances of singing, movement and instrumental work, which demonstrated the depth of enthusiasm and talent across the School. Next year we look forward to sending our primary boys off to the Sydney Town Hall to perform in the IPSHA Music Festival.
Mr Andrew Travers and Mr Campbell Foss have continued to efficiently coordinate the CPS sports program at Inter and Intra School levels. They ensure that IPSHA draws for the Saturday Sport program and School carnivals run smoothly and competitively. With many of the changes taking place within our sports program, both men have been instrumental in making a seamless transition into new sports at new venues. Mr Andrew Travers coordinated our new co-curricular program for years 4 – 6 in terms one and four. This new initiative saw the introduction of Sailing, Tennis, Golf, Coding/Robotics, Music/Art which were electives for the Primary boys.
Mr Bob McDonald has once again fulfilled his multiplicity of tasks and duties around the School with great efficiency and commitment. He runs the uniform shop, controlling the traffic, coordinating a clean school environment, doing the banking and many other behind the scenes jobs makes him most valuable member of our team.
I commend the “After School Care” team of Miss Sarah Ciftci, Mr Bob McDonald, Mr Stephen Dicks and Miss Nicole Thrasy for providing a caring and enjoyable service for all boys who attend. They ensure that the boys complete homework, and enjoy their down-time after a busy school day. Thank you all!
Ultimately, I have achieved my goal in having the best team of professionals and administrators collaboratively

Parents and Friends Association
It’s hard to believe we are approaching the end of 2017 and another school year. We are extremely fortunate at Coogee Prep to have such an active school community that give so generously in so many ways. We also have an amazing group of class parents who have worked tirelessly over the year together with the teachers and school staff who have been so supportive of our events. The Coogee Prep P&F calendar certainly is a busy one, and this year was no different. Thank you to everyone for supporting all our events, from raffles to breakfasts and morning teas, to pizza nights and Fun Food Fridays, together with the tea towel fundraiser, the silver cent fundraiser and most recently the Gelato stall. Your support, your attendance and your generosity are the reasons why these events have been so incredibly successful throughout the year and we are incredibly grateful and appreciative. I’d like to make a special mention of the annual fundraiser – A night of comedy with “The Parents”. It was such a brilliant night with our very own Chris Radburn and his team having the whole crowd in fits of laugher for the entire show which set the scene for a fantastic night. Thank you to everyone who so generously donated prizes and their time to make it such a huge success. We are thrilled to report that over the 12 months approximately $64,000 (gross) has been raised which is an incredible achievement for such a small school community. Some of the funds raised this year will go to fund the upgrade of technology in both Infants (iPads) and Primary (new Chrome Books) together with some robots that are used for coding that were purchased in Term 1. It has been a great privilege to be part of the Coogee Prep P&F this year together with Nicky Crewe, Anita Comyn and Natasha Fielding who have all worked so tirelessly to ensure all our events are such a success. Whilst I will be stepping down from the P&F in 2018, Nicky, Anita and Natasha will continue and I wish them all the very best. Thank you to all the Coogee Prep community, parents, boys, teachers and school staff for all your support and generosity that have made the last twelve months such a pleasure. The success of our events is due to each one of you. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas & fantastic New Year.
