1.2. Peneda-Gerês National Park
The Peneda-Gerês National Park (PGNP) is the only national park in Portugal (although
many natural parks, protected landscapes, and reserves exist across the nation). It is
located in the Norte region, in the northwest of Portugal; specifically in the districts of
Viana do Castelo, Braga, and Vila Real.
The park was created on 8 May 1971 due to its national and international scientific
interest, with the aim to protect the soil, water, flora, fauna, and landscape, while
preserving its value to the existent human and natural resources. Education and
tourism are also goals of the park.
The PGNP is one of the most beautiful and inhospitable places of this country: it
encloses waterfalls, a rich fauna and flora, castles, gastronomy, handcraft, friendly and
wonderful people, community villages, ancient culture…
The PGNP is also a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, declared on 27 May 2009, by
UNESCO.
6
The park is a vast amphitheatre-shaped space sculpted during the Variscan orogeny by
geological forces, wind and water, and extends from the Castro Laboreiro to the
Mourela plateaus, encompassing the Serra da Peneda, Serra do Soajo, Serra Amarela
and the Serra do Gerês. These form a barrier between the ocean plains to its west and
the plateaus in the east. The highest peaks are Peneda (1340 m), Soajo (1430 m),
Amarelo (1350 m), Gerês (1545 m) and Altar dos Cabrões (1538 m) located on the
border with Spain, continuing into this territory as part of the Serra do Xurés.

21
The bibs will be given to the team leader during Accreditation Procedure.
LOC will forbid participation for any athlete using a different bib from his own.
A chip to use in the shoes will be distributed to the athletes
7.10. Cut-off times
The maximum time allowed for the entire race will be 16 hours.
LOC has considered 3 points and has calculated the split time needed to be
respected in order to enable participants to reach the finish in the maximum
time imposed.
To be authorised to continue the event, competitors must leave each of these
checkpoints before the time limit set (whatever is the time of arrival at the
checkpoint).
Athletes who exceed the maximum time of 16h will be disqualified.
Athletes will be stopped if they don’t leave the following points by the specific time:
Any competitor disqualified has to return his bib. If he wants to continue on route it
will be on his own responsibility and in complete autonomy (careful the signs might
have been removed).
7.11. Mandatory, advisable and authorised gear
Mandatory gear:

your country. However, the bib must be visible – it is recommended to use a
bib holder.

clothing + long pants + head band / beanie + gloves.
7.12. Controls and checks
Starting area: Only accessible by athletes who are on the start list. A control will be carried out on mandatory gear. A Bibs control will also be made to assure that the bib number corresponds to the name and that it is correctly positioned. Entry in this area is prohibited to all those who do not meet the above requirements.
Checkpoints during the course: Different checkpoints will be positioned
throughout the course to ensure a perfect regularity of the race (with the
electronic computer control and manual control bib). All these controls will
then be re-checked on arrival.
23
The LOC will set up a team of referees who will be spread over the entire route.
This team will take note of violations and notify the Race Jury who is composed
of 3 members (1 IAU + 1 ITRA + 1 LOC) and has the authority to penalize or
disqualify these athletes.
In case of withdrawal, athletes are kindly requested to send their bib number
via SMS to the LOC number on your bib to avoid unnecessary researches.
During the race a mandatory gear control could occur. In this case, athletes are
obliged to follow the referee’s guidelines. Controls will be applied equally to all
athletes.
There will also be an aleatory gear control at the end of the race.
Assistance to the runners by the team staff: Assistance to the runners can only
be made at the 3 main Aid Stations (Gerês Lindoso and Mezio) and at arrival.
Only 2 members of the staff with the proper accreditation will be allowed in
each of these areas and they will be placed at their Country´s assistance table,

9. MEDICAL SERVICES & DOPING CONTROL
9.1 General
The health policy is managed jointly by the International Trail Running Association
(ITRA), and the local organization committee (LOC). This health policy has neither the
aim nor competence to replace the current national and international regulations in
the anti-doping fight but aims to strengthen the medical supervision. The health policy
will be implemented by a medical commission, consisting of doctors, which can take
25
advice from experts as it considers appropriate and which will be able to express a
consultative opinion to the race jury on the medical condition of athletes.
Each runner agrees:
To inform the LOC’s medical director in the case of the use of a prescription
subject to a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). In this regard, one can find a
procedure to follow in the health space, available free of charge to all runners,
on the International Trail Running Association’s (ITRA) website: www.itra.run.
This information is to be declared upon the day of registration in the case of a
TUE already requested or previously obtained. If not, it must be made by the
8th day following the request for a TUE and imperatively before the start of the
race. In the event of an emergency treatment during the race, the runner is
required to ask the doctor for a TUE. The latter will then add it to the runner’s
ITRA health space.
To give any urinary and/or blood, and/or capillary samples and associated tests
requested by the LOC´s medical director, with the understanding that expenses
incurred for the collection of these samples and the associated analyses are the
direct responsibility of the Organization.
To answer to any summons which the medical director issues on the basis of
the information which has been collected from them by the medical director,
so as to decide upon their capacity, or not, to participate in the race for which
they are registered. At the conclusion of the interview, the medical director can
propose to the race Jury, that the runner is excluded from the race.
9.2 Medical
Aid stations (doctors, ambulances, rescue workers) are located in various parts
of the course. These posts are radio or telephone linked with the PC of the
race.
Aid stations are intended to provide assistance to anyone in danger with the
means of the organisation (according to severity, the request for intervention
of public services is not excluded).
26
It’s up to the runner in difficulty or seriously injured to call the rescue:
- In person at an aid station
- Calling PC racing
- By asking another runner to call for help
If unable to contact the PC running or controller, call the emergency
organisation directly and only in case of emergency life (#112).
Each runner has to provide assistance to any person in danger and inform
emergency services.
It is reminded that the hazards of all kinds related to the environment and the
race can make you wait for help for longer than expected (between 5 and 25
minutes in normal times - which can go up to 40 minutes in some cases).
Your safety will depend on the quality of the equipment you put in your bag.
A runner using a doctor or a rescuer submits to their authority and undertakes
to accept their decisions.
Doctors are empowered to disqualify (by invalidating the race number) any
competitor "deemed" unfit to continue the event and to evacuate by any
means runners they consider to be in danger.
If necessary, the mountain rescue official will lead and implement all
appropriate means, including helicopter. Costs resulting from the use of these
exceptional means will be borne by the rescued person. It is the sole
responsibility of the runner to form and present a dossier to his personal
insurance within the deadline.
9.3 Doping control
Doping control shall be conducted in accordance with IAAF Rules and
Regulations and carried out by the FPA (Portuguese Athletics Federation)
Doping Control Delegate. Both urine and blood samples may be collected
immediately before and during the competition.
Athletes selected for doping control shall be informed by anti-doping officers.
Athletes will be required to sign a confirmation of notification. Athletes who
27
are going to be tested may invite a team official to accompany them to the
Doping Control Centre (DCC).
A selected athlete will be allowed a maximum of one hour to report to the DCC
but should report as soon as possible from the time of official notification. All
selected athletes will be accompanied by a trained chaperone or Doping
Control Officer from the time of notification until arrival at the DCC. Athletes
who are required to use prescribed medication for the treatment of a medical
condition should clearly indicate them on the official form at the Doping
Center.
Athletes are reminded that refusal to provide a sample can render them liable
to disqualification and may lead to further disciplinary action.
The selection of athletes for control will be made on a final position and/or
random basis by the Doping Control Delegate
