What does warming-up mean?

It’s a set of exercises or physical activities we do before a physical

activity of high intensity, to prepare our body physically, mentally, in order

to get a better performance and to prevent injures.

Do you know what can we do for warming-up?

First: Move slowly, around the Gym or the Playground, walking or jogging for 4 to 5 minutes. You can move in various ways.

Second: Move your joints from ankles to neck, each from 7 to 10

times. And then, stretching your main muscles, holding each position for

about 15 to 20 seconds, do this 3 times for each muscle.

Third: On a distance of 20 mts, more or less, do some dynamicsexercises such as:

) j i ith h ls t l t ls

Ben efits of warming-up

There are lots of benefits when you do a good warming-up.

Principally, they are:

a) Increase your heart rate: your heart beats a lot faster.b) Increase your breathing rate: you breathe more times per minute.

c) Your muscles improve their activity: they stretches and contracts

better

d) Increase your motivation for the next activity.

e) Reduce the risk of injury.

So, these are the reason because warming-up is

MY BODYMY FITNESS

How many parts can I divide my body?

Are my legs fit?

Our body is divided in a lot of parts and each part can move thanksto joints there are in it. The joints let the body move in certain directions, and this is the reason why you can catch a ball, you can run, you can jump, you can sit down, you can dance, you can drink a glass…. So you can do allthe movements you want because the parts of your body are joined by the joints.

First you have to know which these parts are, and where they are.Look at this picture:

MY BODY PARTS AND JOINTS

Are my legs fit?

There are some tests that let you measure your fitness or physicalconditions.

What is your endurance?

What is your muscular endurance? What is your strength? What is your power? What is your agility? What is your flexibility?.......

At this first part of the school year, you are going to know how yourfitness is by doing some fitness tests. Eventually you will check the resultwith other testing marks of children who have similar age to you, and ofcourse, you will check them with the results of your classmates.

Now, here are the fitness tests you will realise to check your fitness

This is an aerobic endurance test.

Purpose: To measure the body’s ability to use oxygen while running.

Description: Run around for 12 minutes. The amount of laps you haverun is recorded, you have to know the lap’s distance.

Walking is allowed, although the participants must run all of time ifthey can.

THE MOVEMENTS

UNIT 3

I can run, jump, hoop, turn....

Everybody can move around the space movingtheir joints.

These movements are calling GENERAL SKILLS.

If you only use your body running, leaping, hoping, galloping, skipping, sliding…, you are realizing fundamental

locomotor skills to move in our environment.

Here are all the instructions you need to practice this activity where youcan train some fundamental locomotors skills to improve your GENERAL

DINAMIC COORDINATION.

Look at the picture, in the follow page, while you are reading them.

INSTRUCTIONS ARE:

1. Begin at the starting line. Put one foot in

each hoop.

2. Jump over the bench.

3. Do a roll (any way you like) on the mat.

4. Go up the ramp onto the ladder.

I CHECK MY EFFORTFeel and listen to your hearth !!!

A lot of things happened to our bodies when we exercise.

Have your ever been out of breath after you have run around? This

happens because your muscles use up lots oxygen when you exercise.

Your body needs oxygen quickly, so you breathe faster and more deeply.

Normally, you can measure the effect of exercise by taking your

heart rate (pulse rate):

Look at, when you are resting your pulse beats at a normal rate(60p/m), when you exercise, it beats faster ( 160-165-170…….p/m ), and

once you stop, it returns gradually to the normal rate.

To check you effort, is a good way to take your heart rate or

cardiac frecuency.

HOW CAN YOU DO THIS ?

Curso 07/08Second, using a watch, a stopwatch, or a clock with a second hand,

count how many beats you feel in a minute

When you are exercising , is

better to count the beats only in

6 second and then multiply by 10 (6x10=60 sec= 1 minute)

Also you can count about

15 second and then multiply by 4.

Thrid, remember:

¡¡¡ NEVER USE TO COUNT THE BEATS YOUR THUMB

TRAINING OURS MUSCLESAre you strong?

Which is the bigger muscle of your body?

Every move you make (it isn’t a letter of a song ), you use many

muscles. Many muscles help you to run, jump, hold, lift…things.

Some muscles move your eyes, your face and other body parts. Look, to

smile you use more than 15 muscles, to take one step you use more than 200

muscles.

¡¡ There are more than 650 muscles in your body !!

Which is the biggest muscle of the body?

¡¡ It is the one that you sit on your bottom !!, it is the gluteal.

Where is the strongest muscle in your body? It is in your jaw

How you can develop your muscles?

When you are growing, your muscles become stronger, but you also need

develop them. At your age you can develop your muscles:

•Using your own weight for resistance, and also,

• Using your partner’s weight for resistance.

Finally, when you are adult you can improve (develop) your muscles:

• Lifting objects or weights.

Look at these examples:

A) This is an activity, called circuit training, to develop your muscles using

 your own weight for resistance:

• You can train each exercise during 20 seconds, or 15 times. Do

And B) Here are some exercises, to develop your muscles, using yourpartner’s weight for resistance:

PUT your hands ON your partner’s shoulders and

PUSH AGAINST. Do this for five seconds, five

times.

SIT DOWN, like you would in a chair, LEANING ON

your partner’s back, PUSH AGAINST each other. Do

this for 5 seconds, five times.

HOLD your partner’s wrist each other, one on each

side of a line, PULL him/her OVER the line. Try this

for five times.

ATHLETICS

Our Olympics Class Games

ATHLETICS, also known as TRACK AND FIELD or track and field athletics, is acollection of sports events that involve running, throwing and jumping.

ATHLETE is a person who runs, jumps or throws competing in any track and fieldevent.

For example: Paquillo Fernández, is the best athlete in the Race walking event in

the world .

Modern athletic events, during the outdoor season, are usually organized aroundon a 400 m running track on which most of the running events take place. We know thisplace as a stadium.  ( Look the picture )

These modern events are called Olympics Games.

This year, 2008, the Olympics Games will be organized in Beijing, China. The Olympics Games in 1992, were organized in Barcelona, Spain, you were

probably one year old.

Nowadays, the Olympics Games involve many diferents sports, which not only takeplace in a stadium. During the Olympics Games we can watch Basketball, Handball, Karate,

a. Symmetrical/Asymmetrical shape

b. Forward roll

c. Symmetrical/Asymmetrical shape

d. Headstand, and

e. Symmetrical/Asymmetrical shape

You have to make these moves in a continuous way.

If you do only a,b,c, your routine is worth up to 5 points.
